Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt, in Chandigarh on Friday along with the cast of Jism 2, are as candid about the controversies surrounding the movie as we expect them to be…
Ashima Batish

There are a few press conferences where it's easy to foresee what will happen. This one's exactly like that. We anticipated the presence of an army of press bang on time (10:30 am is quite early by the set standards), film stars to walk in a few minutes late, some daring questions and their equally straight, undiplomatic, unapologetic answers!

When it's the promotional campaign of Sunny Leone and the rest, Pooja Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt's unconventional film, Jism 2…forecasting the event doesn't take much. The cast and crew of the film were in Chandigarh on Friday to talk about the movie and the controversies generated by it.

Makers of bold cinema are ready with their bold answers. The father-daughter duo didn't shy away even once from mentioning the ironies of cinema and life in India, the paradoxes they have observed in all these years of making experimental and different cinema.

"If good people fall in love and bad ones have sex, then why is India so populated? Are all Indians bad?" says Pooja and sets the mood for the interaction. And the paradoxes follow one after the other. So, when one asks if their film is detrimental to the culture of India, the director of the film is on her guard, stating facts that are stranger than fiction. "We have made films like Dushman, Tamanna and Zakham, which won me national awards but didn't add to my bank balance. Then in-between we made Murder and Jism, which got me flak by did wonders with the box-office collections."

If this isn't enough, then the song Abhi Abhi featuring Sunny and Randeep in Jism 2 has got a record 1.5 lakh hits on YouTube in a few days time! "Nothing has changed in the last forty years. People don't want to accept that they like to consume adult entertainment; integrity is lacking because hypocrisy is favoured here."

Irony sets in again when Pooja says that the lingerie and costumes that Sunny wore in the film were well-received when they were auctioned at a charity event. "Never before dressing down has made so much money in India," quips Pooja.

Just like Jism, she believes Jism 2 will find its audience too. Much against what was assumed Jism was appreciated by the women more than the men. "Women are unapologetic about watching adult cinema. Men watch, but cringe." As for the porn industry and employing a pornstar, the Bhatts refer to the hundred billion dollar industry. Mahesh adds, "The moral police opines that we are polluting the ethos of India, while our politicians enjoy the same in positions of power." Pooja takes on from there, "And if the culture of India is so vulnerable that a film can effect it, then it better be changed."

The politicians have again started playing their cards well and campaigns to take off the film posters in Maharashtra have begun. "Another leader of the same party invited Sunny to be a part of a traditional Indian function just a couple of days back." While the Bhatts do all the talking, it is Sunny Leone that the cameras focus on the most. You need not go far in search of contradictions!

Sunny speak

Living up to her reputation, Sunny Leone looked every bit her gorgeous self. Donning a black shimmer dress with a plunging neckline was enough to make men gape at her, but the only regret is that she didn't speak much. Once in a while when she opened her mouth, Pooja Bhatt jumped to her defense. The only golden words from her are: "Jism 2 is the perfect platform to enter Bollywood. I didn't feel uncomfortable shooting the intimate scenes." And that's about it!

Men talk

The men of the movie barely got a chance to say anything. Arunoday Singh is happy to do the film; didn't mind if initially Sunny grabbed all the limelight. "I will get my due for the film. If I have done justice to my role, people will appreciate my effort, irrespective of who my co-stars are. As for the other man, Randeep Hooda, he carried the same 'I-don't-give-a-damn-attitude' but never mind, it suits him perfectly! The actor seems to have taken off after cameos in 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, Jannat 2 and Cocktail. "Jism 2 has given me a new beginning. Good work is important to get more such work. I am just ensuring that whatever I do gets noticed," says the actor.

All that jazz: Bridal Asia offers exotic bridal wear and accessories.

Come August and amidst the festivities and splendour there are all the right reasons for you to run around and look for the best bargain. Keeping all of these in mind, Wedding Asia opens its doors for the city.

Despite many exhibitions, which throng the city on a regular basis, this one surely has something different to offer.

Bridal wear

If you are game for something exotic in your wardrobe this season, take your pick from the huge collection Sanam Tamanna have brought to Chandigarh. This, rather good-looking, brother-sister duo has inter-woven the magic of Pakistani fabrics with an Indian twist to add the touch of grace in the collection. Tamanna, dressed in a pure white zamzama with intricate silver detailing, says, “I have brought the special peshwas to Chandigarh.” Complete with a back trail and plazzos, the suits are defiantly worth a look. Her third time in Chandigarh, the lady brought all branded suits from Pakistan.

At another stall, Sakshi Kathuria, in a fuchsia shirt and white shorts, talks about her kaftan dresses, sari and anarkalis. A pass-out from the NIFT, her embroideries are delicate and fine. A contemporary yet feminine, her garments are colourful and soft. “A lady who can drape a chiffon sari is perfect in draping,” smiles Amit Kashyap, showing off his brightly coloured orange and fuchsia saris. Busy reviving traditions in fabrics and garments, he has sought inspiration from his mother’s diamond chiffon. “The sari goes through a ring,” he shares. His stall is brimming with gota patti work and delicate embellishments. His satrangi piece, a seven coloured lehenga is worth the wait. “It is coming to Chandigarh tomorrow,” he says, showing Hyderabadi pearls on the border.

Accessories and jewels

Shoes today are probably more decorated than clothes. Standing true to the Cinderella slipper by Christian Louboutin, Adaa and Fidda from Mumbai bring the jewellery for your feet. From flats with huge stones to a few lacy numbers, they offer you a wide range of options.

An antique bridal neckpiece and wonderfully well-coordinated earrings, PD Kundanwala brings the best in jewels for your D- Day. For the not-so-expensive stones for your best friend’s wedding, pick out from Sunflowers stall. Made in silver and plated with gold, these are surely not a bad deal.

Groom Wear

It’s not only the brides, but also the groom who are ready to experiment today. Moving away from the classic cream suits, grooms now-a-days are going for purples, reds and greens. Brining the best to Chandigarh, Delhi-based Dhruv Vaish has brought a whole lot of shirts and sherwanis. “I have a salwar for men, made with 15 meters of fabric,” he says. A brown cowl’s pant dresses up a plain shirt and the jodhpuri’s go perfectly well with the embellished jacket. So, if the bridezilla is just beginning, this is a good peak into what’s new and latest.

Gift corner
Gifts are always special, but add a bit more and they become the best
Sabia Talwar

A gift to someone should always be special but if it belongs to the luxury line, it surely becomes much more worthwhile! Ruchira Bose, who runs LX Emporio, has been based in Singapore for nearly six years now and makes everything work from a set-up in Gurgaon. Ruchira is here to showcase her collection at the Wedding Asia exhibition, which is on at Hotel Taj, Chandigarh.

“My company deals with luxury items, both online as well as offline, at the ease of my clients,” says Ruchira. Ruchira explains that she deals with the most appropriate gifts for the purpose of weddings or corporate gifting. “I have items that have high recall value and are special in their own way.”

Ruchira is in close connect with her work because she was a correspondent and then the managing editor for a luxury publication in Singapore. People who can drop at her end should be strictly the ones who are passionate about luxury, which does not necessarily mean high-end brands. “I have got clients who have time constraints and want something customised. We are partners with brands like Riedel for glassware, BVLGARI for watches, Dolce & Gabbana for accessories, Wedgewood for crockery and many more.”

To gift something to someone is the most tedious task whether you know the choices well or not. “I love to know my customer in-depth before suggesting anything to him or her.”

An interesting fact is that anything which is easily available at a store is not what this luxury service provider offers. So the gifts can be crystal bar set with swarvoski on it, a honeymoon on a private island with a celebrity chef and private butlers. “I’m always excited about crazy requests because that’s what we are here for.”

And what does she think about the money that has to be spent for all this? “I want that people should know that luxury items we offer are not run-of-the-mill stuff. I regularly educate my customers about the USP of the product so that they understand why they are paying a huge price for it.” So are you ready to shell out the moolah for the best?.c

Flower power
Men’s fashion this Spring/Summer is invaded by floral prints and you bet they look pretty masculine ...
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Men please take a note —your plain shirts and deep denims are a thing of the past. Today, it is all about print. From floral fantasy to Hawaiian dreams (we are not counting Hawaiian prints on holiday shirts); patterns are what you will witness the coming spring in menswear section.

Whether you are ready or not, the Spring/Summer 2013 collection in Milan and Paris have already thrown up a bouquet of sorts; everyone from Frida Giannini at Gucci to Sacha Walckhoff at Christian Lacroix to Bill Gaytten at John Galliano has incorporated floral prints in some form or the other.

And at Kenzo they have introduced camouflage-meets-floral version for the men's wardrobe. That's not all, Prada is even selling floral trousers. So, what about the Indian men? Are they ready for flower power? Here's a quick check.

"Guys are getting into colour now," says designer Abhi of Abhi Rahul fame. "Print is the next logical step and patterns are the next big thing." Talking about prints and the Indian male, "They are more than ready. We are global citizens and it's time that we digest the fact that Indian men are equally fashionable."

"Well, Hawaiian and vintage-looking prints have been taken well by men and I guess we should be in for a surprise to see men embrace prints," says designer Amit Kashyap. Going back in time he says, "When the block colour look started to come in, I wondered if men would wear it. But from a designer level right through to the high street, everybody started to do well with bold colour jeans and chinos." While men are getting bolder with designs, fashion designers claim that the printed look is a hit with the age group of 18 -30, as these guys are more confident.

"The current look of men is peppy and prints sure would attract men," says Karan Sood an employee working with an MNC in Mohali. He adds, "I think the look will be a slow burn and probably take a season or two to filter down."

Nodding, Vaibhav, an employee with a travel portal says, "Smaller prints and the camouflaged designs would be taken well, but men will take time before they start wearing complete florals." While there are many ways to wear a print the beauty of print is you can hit it as hard as you like.

Prada is selling floral trousers.

  • Burberry is backing tribal print trousers.
  • Zara is selling Aztec-inspired backpacks. To say that print is enjoying a comeback is an understatement.
  • Kenzo has introduced camouflage-meets-floral version for the men's wardrobe.

Some nautanki!

Short service: Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan along with Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunal Roy Kapoor shot for the title track of Rohan Sippy’s Nautanki Saala recently.

In the song, AB will be seen addressing Ayushmann as Nautanki Saala. Co-incidentally, long back in Ramesh Sippy’s cult classic Sholay, Amitabh Bachchan was seen mouthing the same lines to his buddy Veeru aka Dharmendra.

Says an eyewitness, "Abhishek called Ayushman Nautanki Saala in the song. This brought back memories of his father, Amitabh mouthing the same lines in Rohan's father Ramesh Sippy's Sholay.

The film will release later this year or in 2013 as they have just started shooting. Abhishek has a special appearance in the movie because Rohan considers him lucky. This is his first film not starring Bachchan.

Show me some money, honey!

Well done: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is returning in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur II as the main protagonist, says he wants to become the highest paid actor in the industry.

Siddiqui, who struggled for more than a decade to make a mark in the industry despite being critically appreciated for his work, does not understand why talent is not the criteria of good pay package in Bollywood.

"I want to be the highest paid actor in the industry. I don't understand why good actors don't get paid well. Actors should get paid according to their talent but they would hardly earn the money which would easily come to some people because of their background," said Siddiqui.

It has been a long road to recognition for Siddiqui since his debut in Aamir Khan starrer Sarfarosh in 1999.

The actor, who played memorable roles in films like Black Friday, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, Dev D, Peepli Live and Kahaani, says there were days when he wanted to quit everything.

"I have seen it all in the industry. There were days when I wanted to quit but did not know anything other than acting so I stayed. The struggle was long but there were good people around me like Aamir and Anurag, who believed in me and told me to stick around," says Siddiqui, who hails from Muzaffarnagar.

Now that recognition has come his way, the NSD graduate wants to focus on his craft.

"Camera is the only place where I am honest. I may lie in real life but not when I am facing a camera. The characters become me and sometimes it is hard to get out of that mode. I don't enjoy being the centre of attention. This is why I am a bit baffled by it. I hope it does not affect my acting," said Siddiqui. —PTI

Money vs longevity

At a time when the benchmark of a Bollywood box office success has scaled up to Rs 100 crore, film-maker Karan Johar refuses to be influenced by it saying he rather believes in longevity of films. "I don't know why are we tagging films with Rs 100 crore mark. There is too much of pressure of Rs 100 crore. At the end of the day the film is here for longevity and it is not necessary that every Rs 100 crore film will breathe forever," the film-maker said.

"Rs 100 crore mark is like a big glorious century and it is great to achieve it. But if you achieve Rs 10 crore less or more, it does not make your film smaller or bigger," he said. Earlier, a good story with musical scores appealing the audience was the touchstone of Bollywood triumph. "I think longevity is everything in movie business. Looking back 50 years later, when we think of gems of cinema we would not analyse them in terms of box office. We would remember them as cinema and what contributed to cinema. And we hope to achieve that with Student of the Year," he said. Johar returns to direction after a gap of two years with Student of the Year, which has three new faces—Alia Bhatt, Soni Razdan, Varun Dhawan, David Dhawan, and newbie Siddharth Malhotra. — PTI

Fresh talent and new ideas - that's what the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 kicked off in Mumbai on Friday. As many as seven new designers wowed fashionistas at the opening of the five-day gala with distinct collections. The 'Gen Next' show included new designers like Aniket Satam, Sneha Arora, Asa Kazingmei, Kavita Sharma, Richa Aggarwal and a group of three called Threesome.

All collections were mainly based on an array of colours and textures, with designs which were quirky and the garments, innovative. The show started with Ashta and Sidharth's collection, which was dominated by colours like bright yellow and navy blue. It was followed by a line by the Threesome - Mehak Pruthi, Kanika Seth and Ankit Sharma. Their collection was based on Avatars.

"We based it on self-avatars, displaying the true emotion of clandestine. We all have something hidden in us which we never let out," they said of their line, after the show. The group also emphasised that they didn't want to do away with the true flavour of India, and so tried to "promote what we are". Another newcomer Richa Aggarwal's collection could be best described as "earthy".

"I tried to represent the streets of India through my collection. It was very colourful with textures. The clothes were simple yet wearable," she said.

Kavita Sharma showcased a collection 'It's a beautiful life'.

"It was based on the idea of rebirth depicted in the Bhagwad Gita. It's about a small child who is amused by his surroundings, and all my garments had a different story behind them," she said. Sneha Arora's line had a completely different look with her models sporting intellectual looks. "My theme was once upon a time in paradigm. The monotony of black and grey were broken by colour and digital prints," she said. Asa Kazingmei's theme was 'immortal'. The collection had simple silhouettes along with well constructed structures. There were motifs depicting the bravery of the
soldiers. The last collection of the show was by Aniket Satam, who was inspired by the prediction that the world will come to an end in 2012.

The ongoing extravaganza is in its 13th edition, and is being held at the Grand Hyatt. —IANS

Shahid paints a happy picture

Busy man: Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor shares his take on his upcoming movies and heroines….

Getting busy

A lot has been written about my state of mind and the movies I am doing and so many other things. I am doing three movies - one is Maneesh Sharma's film which begins in September and is completed by November. Then there is a movie with Prabhudeva which begins in 2013 and Bejoy Nambiar's movie which also begins in 2013 as they both are busy with other films right now. I will continue to do the films I can connect with and it doesn't matter whether they do well or not. I am getting busier because people have said and even I believe that I work quite little. I have met Rajkumar Santoshi but have not signed any film yet.

Colour coding

We will talk about heroines in sarees specifically (to avoid confusion). Priyanka looks great in black, orange suits Kareena, Sonam looks nice in white and red is for Vidya. I will pick green for Katrina and blue for Deepika.

All for the Son of Sardar

good wife: Kajol

Kajol is playing the perfect wife by spreading the good word about her husband Ajay Devgn's next film Son Of Sardar. She says the trailer is just a glimpse of the movie.

"I haven't seen the (complete) film, but I have seen bits of it. It is looking fabulous. The trailer is good, but the film is even better," the 37-year-old said.

Ajay has had a spate of successful films recently - be it the Golmaal series, Singham or Bol Bachchan, and with Son Of Sardar, he is only expected to take it to the next level.

Son of Sardar, releasing Nov 13, also stars Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha.

Meanwhile, Kajol, who recently sizzled on the red carpet of a beauty awards, says it is important to have the right attitude and confidence to carry off any look at such events.

"My red carpet style says that I have to have a good sense of humour to be able to take the criticism. My red carpet style says that I have to have a big smile and it also says that I have to believe I am beautiful for you to believe I am beautiful," said Kajol.

Kajol herself has been keeping away from films and was last seen in Toonpur Ka Superhero in 2010, the same year when her film My Name is Khan had hit theatres.

Actor Tom Hiddleston has been named the world's hottest actor. He has pipped artists like Ryan Gosling and Chris Hemsworth for the title. The 31-year-old got the title through a poll conducted by a magazine. He is "astonished".

"I am absolutely astonished. To anyone and everyone who voted for me: thank you. To be nominated in such exalted company was honour enough, but this really is the icing on the cake," Hiddleston said. "Actors can't call themselves actors without an audience to watch them, and the idea that you're all out there and believing in the work I do is a source of enormous pride," he added. — IANS

Comeback time

holy role: Shikha Swaroop

Ex Miss India, Shikha Swaroop made a distinct mark as the lead of Chandrakanta but then disappeared for the longest time. The promising actress with oodles of grace and beauty now makes a comeback in Zee TV’s much talked-about mythological series Ramayana.

Why did you choose to do this role?

I was told that if there was no Kaikeyi there would be no Ramayana. She was one of the beautiful and sought after queen of King Dashrath. She was a good mother but had a change of heart due to corruption. Manthara poisoined her mind or else she was doting mother to all her kids including step kids. I like the shades in the character. I never knew that this epic wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for her. The role is dashing as she also saved her husband during a war which is how she got a boon from him to ask anything she wants. Nothing would have happened if it weren’t for her. Sita is the dutiful wife and daughter in law and isn’t a very exciting role. So I am happy to play the most exciting role.

Was glamour also a factor?

Of course. It is a wonderful factor to look glamourous on screen. I’ve been signed on to play Kaikeyi in Zee TV’s Ramayana. With this show, I’m told Zee is planning to bring back the whole Sunday morning TV viewing experience for the whole family and I think that’s a great idea. I am excited about my role of Kaikeyee as essaying a warrior queen with shades of grey calls for an air of regality, poise that comes only with power, strength of character and a stern, steely body language. As a former beauty pageant winner and a model, I have imbibed the art of composing my body language and carrying myself in a manner that projects the right image required for any role I play. I will enjoy playing such an iconic mythological character and hope to add my own charm and individuality to it.”

Once again Ramayana will air but the first one is still at the top of the minds of people. How will that recall value affect your show?

I don’t have any apprehensions. It all depends on the audiences and their moods. Suddenly if they get excited about something ordinary then it becomes a hit and if something extra ordinary bores them, then one can’t do anything about it.

There was yet another Ramayana which was a hit recently on Imagine.

Yes, the makers Sagar are returning with this new Ramayana but more importantly the show will be simulcast on did and Zee. We will get the masses and hope for the best. We are here to do a good job.

What kind of perception actors have while doing mythological soaps?

I was always excited about a glamorous costume as I did in Chandrakanta. I enjoy looking out of the ordinary. It was more fantasy and I loved it. One can’t do costume dramas in real life which is what makes it so exciting.  You can’t play king or queen in real life which is more exciting, challenging and fun for actors.

Was talking in chaste Hindi a problem for you?

Hindi is easy as I have been doing Chandrakanta from the beginning as I have been comfortable for the same. I have been doing the show for 15-16 years. I have been at ease with costume dramas. It is home for me not challenge.

What about getting offers for other shows?

As of now some reason or rhyme they didn’t materialise god knows why. If it comes my way I would do it. Chandrakanta was remade and they came to me. I am open to regular shows and films. — HRM

Playing the new role

getting noticed: Nandish Sandhu

Nandish Sandhu who recently joined Zee’s show Phir Subah Hogi is enjoying the show. He says, “I am getting a lot of emails - people who used to watch Uttaran.  They are happy that I have taken up this character, people have realised that this is an issue in the North which has gone unnoticed.”

He is scared while delivering dialogues as the show is based on a real-life story. “Saying a word here or there would make a lot of difference - it might hurt somebody,” he adds.  So Nandish does not have the freedom to modify dialogues like other actors.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is August 4...

Simply ignore those who approach you for credit. Your children will present you with a situation which has been blown out of proportion. Verify the facts before taking any action. You will be sensitive to remarks made by your lover. You need to control your emotions and avoid doing anything that could worsen the situation. You will have problems in convincing your partners to stick to your plans. Number four is the worker. They are practical and love details. You are trustworthy, hard-working and helpful. Ruled by Uranus, you will be steady, logical, self-disciplined and solve problems. If expressed negatively you are stubborn and narrow.

A leadership role will suit you. You have got a knack for fitting together an efficient and a fun team. Offer to take charge; chances are they'll gratefully let you. But you're liable to lose some momentum. Take care of the basics and yourself now. Be patient for just a little while longer. Soon the pieces will start falling into place. Many questions will be answered. Do not give up on the puzzle that has been frustrating you since long. Now is not the time to walk away. Cause for a celebration is likely, especially over good health news, promotions, births and new relationships. Feeling humanity is likely this week as many of you stumble into positive energy.

Your excess energy will find proper channel in business and work. You will be interested in and will be able to execute new ventures. Significant monetary gains are indicated. Business partnerships are likely to yield results and quite contrarily.

You'll be at the risk of developing some long-evolving diseases or have accidents. You should be cautious in order to avoid them, but especially to be more confident - particularly at the end 2012.

You are up for something or someone new and different. Settling down or sticking with the usual activities is not going to cut it. Exploring different kinds of experiences may not always work, but it's going to improve your chances of getting the satisfaction you seek.

Mood: Excited at times. Compatible signs: Taurus, Libra. Lucky colours: Green Yellow, Beige. Lucky days: Thursday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 5, 8, 17, 19, 57

first-day-first show
Thrills and frills

Movie: Jism 2

Starring: Sunny Leone, Arunoday Singh and Randeep Hooda

A porn star is hired by a dashing intelligence officer to become a honey trap for a dreaded assassin. In doing so she not only has to control her bitter-sweet past, but is forced to make an impossible choice—one that will put her own life into double jeopardy.

Snail’s pace

The movie lacks pace and thrills but Randeep Hooda’s performance is amazing. Sunny Leone has good sex appeal but does not know how to act. The music is also quite pleasing to the ears.

Mohit Laal, student, PU

Bad story

It has a very imbalanced storyline and plot. Arunoday’s expressions don’t even match to the situations. Sunny Leone has a body to show but can barely act. So, Randeep Hooda is the only saving grace.

Param Singh, bank employee

Not worth it

The movie hardly makes sense but has good music which makes you sit throughout. It’s not at all worth watching even once.

Simran Kaur, housewife
