That sporty streak
SUVs are no longer the dream machine for men alone; more and more women are taking to the wheels of this mean machine
Jasmine Singh

"It is kind of scary, I am extra-cautious when I see them drive. I try to stay at a hand's length, if possible miles away from cars that have women behind the wheel." This is an observation of a scared and concerned male driver Diljot Janjua from Mohali, who had to shell out Rs 10,000 from his pocket because a woman driver decided to switch lanes without giving an indicator!

We bet we will have a hundred incidents rolling in on women drivers, but then you cannot deny their presence on the road. In fact, statistics clearly indicate an increase in the number of women car buyers. And they are definitely not following the 'mera wala' pink syndrome. Mileage, space, comfort everything is being scanned and guess what is being zeroed-in on — SUVs (sports utility vehicles). These big, bulky machines, the very man's car, SUVs are finding a favour with women, who not only like driving it but swear an allegiance to them.

Big deal

It is not unusual to find a woman zoom past in a SUV! Says Seema Jham, Chandigarh-based consultant, who drives an XUV 500, her first SUV, "We bought the SUV a month back and the way I have taken a liking to it is amazing. It is the most comfortable machine I have come across; it is safe and spacious as well," says Seema, who wouldn't trade her sports utility vehicle for any Sedan. "I can now understand why after driving XUV 500 men don't like any other machine. It gives a sense of owning something big." She has more to say, "A woman driving an SUV still invites lot of glances."

Adventurous trail

An adjustable console, good storage capacity, women definitely crave for many more things in their car. Take it from a senior medical officer in Mohali, Param Preet Ghuman, who has been driving a Safari for almost eight years now. She has her preferences clearly laid out. "There is enough demarcation in society for men and women, why do we add cars to that category now? When I went with my husband to buy a car, I was clear that I wanted a machine that would be comfortable and the same time cater to the adventurous streak in me," she says. "As a physician I have to travel a lot, at the same time I like to hit the hills once in a while and Safari is the best machine for that?" she concludes.

Safe & stable

Safety is the word women cannot ignore, nor take chances with. Ritu Sehgal, a homemaker from Panchkula has got the hang of her Nissan and feels most comfortable and safe driving it. "Once I started driving it, I realised how comfortable it is. I did test drive for other models as well; and finally zeroed on this."

Rugged look

Out of many reasons that women cite for buying SUVs, Ajay Thakur, head sales, Jaguar Freelander feels that women has always been powerful and adventurous, it is now that they are expressing themselves. Big SUVs are like a medium of expression. In fact, women realise their rugged side and are choosing machines that are equally rough and rugged leading an increase in the number of women purchasing sports utility vehicles."

Go green
The trend of boutique gardens is fast catching up with Ludhiana folks...
Poonam Bindra

Picturesque gardens with landscaping along with modern-day architectural inputs are the latest rage among Ludhiana folks these days. Something that was restricted to the crème-da-la-crème of the city earlier seems to have become a passion with many now. Not being bound by the area, big or small, the desire to have a manicured garden, maybe on the terrace, is fast becoming a trend. Such is also the pursuit of the man with the green thumb Pushpinder Singh, who is into developing 'boutique gardens'.

An MSc in horticulture, Pushpinder lays a lot of stress on regular irrigation to get the desired results and is trying to lay the automatic system of sprinklers in most of the projects he undertakes. Emphasising a lot on the protection and maintenance of plants, he also advocates the use of ornamental veggie plants to beautify the garden, which serve a dual purpose. His dream project of a park in block I of Sarabha Nagar, with its neatly divided areas for children, senior citizens and the general public, is very popular.

"It is a misconception that the water element in the form of fountains is very costly and requires a lot of maintenance; they just have to be made once and then the upkeep is automatic and the result is very soothing" he says. Indoor plants are also his forte and he believes that no costly decorations can replace the indoor greenery that is provided by plants. Small, structured sitting areas dot his gardens, which are now taking the place of 'good old verandahs'. Having designed the green areas for DMC Hospital, farmhouses, marriage palaces and many residential areas, this scientist now envisions a master 'green' plan for this industrial town.

Flower power
Men’s fashion this Spring/Summer is invaded by floral prints and you bet they look pretty masculine in them
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Men please take a note--your plain shirts and deep denims are a thing of the past. Today it is all about print. From floral fantasy to Hawaiian dreams (we are not counting Hawaiian prints on holiday shirts); patterns are what you will witness the coming spring in menswear section.

Whether you are ready or not, the Spring/ Summer 2013 collection in Milan and Paris have already thrown up a bouquet of sorts; everyone from Frida Giannini at Gucci to Sacha Walckhoff at Christian Lacroix to Bill Gaytten at John Galliano has incorporated floral prints in some form or the other.

And at Kenzo they have introduced camouflage-meets-floral version for the men's wardrobe. That's not all Prada is even selling floral trousers. So, what about the Indian men? Are they ready for flower power? Here's a quick check.

"Guys are getting into colour now," says designer Abhi of Abhi Rahul fame. "Print is the next logical step and patterns are the next big thing." Talking about prints and the Indian male, "They are more than ready. We are global citizens and it's time that we digest the fact that Indian men are equally fashionable."

"Well, Hawaiian and vintage-looking prints have been taken well by men and I guess we should be in for a surprise to see men embrace prints," says designer Amit Kashyap. Going back in time he says, "When the block colour look started to come in, I wondered if men would wear it. But from a designer level right through to the high street, everybody started to do well with bold colour jeans and chinos." While men are getting bolder with designs, fashion designers claim that the printed look is a hit with the age group of 18 -30, as these guys are confident.

"The current look of men is peppy and prints sure would attract men," says Karan Sood an employee working with an MNC in Mohali. He adds, "I think the look will be a slow burn and probably take a season or two to filter down."

Nodding, Vaibhav, an employee with a travel portal says, "Smaller prints and the camouflaged designs would be taken well, but men will take time before they start wearing complete florals." While there are many ways to wear a print the beauty of print is you can hit it as hard as you like.

  • Prada is selling floral trousers.
  • Burberry is backing tribal print trousers.
  • Zara is selling Aztec-inspired backpacks. To say that print is enjoying a comeback is an understatement.
  • Kenzo has introduced camouflage-meets-floral version for the men's wardrobe.

Zooming on Delhi
Mona

One thing that certainly goes in favour of the young generation today is their confidence. The ongoing exhibition Love at Second Sight on at Alliance Française-36 brings together three things that Saksham Malik loves to explore - photography, writing and travel. A collection of 17 of his pictures dot up the café.

He loves to write, photography caught his attention only a year back. And, here he is with an exhibition to share his work with the world. Capturing the life of the downtrodden be it the Hauz Khas or Kashmiri Gate, Saksham loves to dwell on details. So, in the grey background, it's the yellow bench that stands out. When it comes to clicking, Saksham is at his happiest best at the national capital. "Delhi never disappoints me," he says."The exhibition is named Love at Second Sight for a reason. At first glance one might not find a person or sight appealing. But the pictures give a chance to re-examine your first reaction," says Saksham.

Bark Basics: Avoid using roadside trees for medicinal purposes
Bark Basics:
Avoid using roadside trees for medicinal purposes

Mahatama Gandhi had once said that mother earth has enough for man's need but not for his greed. When it comes to plants, I would like to add one more thing; if you want to kill a plant then tell about its medicinal value to the masses. They will do the job and very fast.

Most of the trees around us have one or the other medicinal value. They are being used since ages as home remedy for various ailments. However, they have tremendous ornamental value too. Some of these are known to bear beautiful flowers, they have sturdy stems or are valued for their longevity. These are being used in urban areas for avenue planting. To name a few, the amaltas, lahura, arjun, mango, jamun, neem are considered pride of any urban planting. But here, both the planting agency and the city residents have to be considerate about these plants.

Whereas both, amaltas and lahura bear beautiful flowers during summer months, jamun and mango trees are planted along the roads for shade. However, planting such fruit plants along roads is not desirable. It is invariably seen that children throw stones on such trees and prove hazardous for the passerby and the flowing traffic. Jamun fruit when ripe falls on the ground and dirties the place. So does the neem during monsoon months. They emit bad smell too when crushed by pedestrians or traffic.

Moreover, the jamun wood is very brittle and breaks with the slightest increase in the wind. The planners and planting agencies should avoid planting such trees along the roads.

You must have heard about the use of arjun or jamun bark for medicinal purpose, but did anyone inform you that the medicinal plants should be collected from virgin lands.

Dostana director clears the air

Daring stance: Tarun Mansukhani Dostana director Tarun Mansukhani is miffed with the reports of him being ousted from Dharma Productions. “I am being asked by a lot of people suddenly about the article about me being ousted from Dharma. Didn't care to clarify till now because I genuinely thought no one would take such rubbish seriously.

But seems a lot of people are, and some are even happy that I am silent and not clearing the air. Apparently silence doesn’t make you dignified, it makes you a door mat. So finally I feel the need to say it out loud and clear out the rumours about me,’ the director said.

He also clarified that Karan Johar hasn’t asked him to leave. “Rumour # 1 – ‘Karan has asked me to leave Dharma’ - I have not been ousted from Dharma. I am very much a part of the company. Always was and always will be. There are no misunderstandings or creative differences between Karan and me,” he continued.

He added that Karan pays him more than he is worth: “Rumour # 2 - "I have asked for a share in profits" - I have never ever asked for a share in profits. Karan pays me more than I am worth. He has given me an apartment to stay in. And even tolerated and pampered me despite not having made a film since 2008.” “It would be extremely ungrateful of me, someone who is eternally indebted to him, to ever ask for a share in profits. Karan has and always will be my family my friend and my boss. Those who have a problem with it... Try all you want to break them. You should just hope that I don't lose my patience with you. Cause I don't play games,” he signed off.

Second time lucky?

Tough call: George Clooney Hollywood star George Clooney is being pressured by his mother Nina Warren to tie the knot for a second time. The 51-year-old actor married actress Talia Balsam in 1989. They divorced in 1993. Clooney, who is currently dating wrestler Stacy Keibler, has vowed never to marry again, reported a publication.

"It was a big breakthrough for Stacy to spend quality time with George's parents. George has seldom done that since he took his first wife Talia Balsam to meet them before they got hitched.

"Nina knows how George feels about marriage, but she thinks Stacy's the right girl for her son and she's determined to help him see sense," a source said.

"Now it's in George's hands. He has to decide if he's ready to take the plunge and make Stacy the next Mrs George Clooney," the source added. — PTI

A memory called punishment

Actress Mila Kunis once "freaked out" when she was forced to take the bus to the set of That '70S Show after her father confiscated her car keys. The Black Swan star found fame as a teenager on the hit US sitcom, and lived with her parents for the duration of her TV stint, reported a publication.

Kunis was still subject to discipline at home despite her Hollywood success - and after one heated argument her dad refused to let her use her car. "I was living with my parents when I was working on That '70s Show and one time I got into a fight with my dad and he threatened to take my car keys away. "I woke up the next morning to go to the set and my keys were gone and there was bus fare and a note saying: 'Good luck'. I freaked out as I had never taken the bus before and I had no idea how to do it," she said. — PTI

Mallika’s pain, Gihana’s gain

Mallika Sherawat seems to be going through rough times! Earlier this year, film-maker Priyadarshan insisted that her item number be dropped from Tezz, and now the actress has been removed from the Sachiin Joshi starrer Mumbai Mirror, directed by Ankush Bhatt.

Apparently, the production team of Mumbai Mirror was so cheesed with Mallika’s unprofessional ways that they thought it best to do away with her altogether from the film. It is said that after agreeing to do the movie at a certain amount, just when the shooting was about to begin, Mallika unexpectedly decided to hike her price. She is said to have suddenly started dilly-dallying from allotting dates to the movie’s first schedule after everything was planned by the unit. This irked the makers who decided they did not want to tolerate her tantrums.

“Mallika thought she could extract more money by holding up the shoot last minute by not allotting dates. But this is blackmail. If she could do such a thing even before the movie rolled, she could have done it again,” says a unit source.  “If she demanded more money mid-way, it would have been very difficult for us to replace her then. So the best way to tackle such unprofessional behaviour seemed to be to do away with her,” the source added. On hindsight, it seems this will again be Mallika’s loss all the way. Because reports have it that a new dusky damsel called Gihana Khan has already signed on the dotted line.

Out for good

Exit phase: Jason Segel Funnyman Jason Segel is set to quit How I Met Your Mother after its eighth season airs later this year. The actor, who plays Marshall Eriksen in the show, will bow out as his Hollywood career has taken off in recent years with diverse roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, The Muppets, reported a publication.

"It's great to do some 'Rated R' stuff again, because I've been playing the nice guy for quite a long time now.

That's why I'm gonna quit How I met your Mother after the eighth season," Segel said.

The actor, who is dating actress Michelle Williams, said that he feels like the show is coming to a natural end. "I've hit my thirties, the TV show that I've been doing for eight years is coming to its natural end, I'm feeling much more like, 'OK, now it's time for phase three.' It's time I think," he added. Segel's departure could leave the show's future hanging in the balance as he plays one of the show's central characters, alongside Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders. Mane matter

Actress Charlize Theron, who shaved off her famed blonde locks for her role in new movie Mad Max: Fury Road, is reportedly desperate for her hair to grow back. Theron, 36, was happy to do it for the film but now she is not comfortable with her new look, reported a website.

The actress is said to have stocked up on hair products in a bid to make her locks grow faster. "She is not going out in public as much because of her hair. She's growing it out as soon as possible," a source said. — PTI

THE YEAR AHEAD
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is August 3...

The number three is a sociable, friendly, and outgoing number. You are kind, positive, and optimistic. Number three people enjoy life and have a good sense of humour. Ruled by Jupiter, you will be jovial, friendly, positive, adventurous and expressive. If expressed negatively you will be extravagant and superficial.

An intense desire to change jobs could prompt you to do something hasty. It may be necessary to cancel personal plans to cover extra shifts. While this turn of events is annoying, it really can't be helped. Try to tackle your duties with energy and enthusiasm. This will make time go faster.

Besides, dwelling on disappointment, will just compound your frustration. Close family members will make you feel jealous and irritated. Secret affairs can ruin your reputation. Stick to your job and don't count on others to pitch in and help you. Watch out for individuals who might try to mislead you or give you information that might cause you some harm. You may find it difficult to control your emotions. Your unusual behaviour will confuse people around you and leave you frustrated. Simply ignore those who approach you for temporary loans. Being revengeful towards your lover will not bring any result-rather you should keep a cool head and explain your true feelings to your lover.

This is no time to hold back. You must give it everything that you have got. Hope for the best and expect the worst. The road ahead is going to be rocky and rutted. A big project may claim all your 'time and money' trying to 'do it exactly right.' Maybe being practical is better than being ideal. There may be some financial problems in the beginning. You are advised to invest money after sounding out all checks. Those engaged in services could face trouble at work.

Angela Beesley StarlingThere could be some changes in partnerships also. You appear to provide plenty of 'steady' and helpful energy to needy pals in both career and personal issues. You will be in an excellent physical shape and you'll have a lot of energy. Take care and guard against accidents. Drive slowly.

Mood: Confident. Compatible signs: Aries, Virgo. Lucky colours: Light Blue, Coral. Lucky Days: Monday and Thursday. Lucky numbers: 2, 5, 15, 25, 59
