New bus terminus for Fatehgarh Sahib
Tribune News Service

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 2
The woes of the hundreds of passengers who have to use the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) here might be over finally as the district administration has decided to set up the bus terminal at a new site on the GT Road near Sirhind.

Presently, the ISBT daily receives about 200 buses which depart for various destinations in the district as well as to other towns of the neighboring states in the country. It has been a picture of neglect for the past over 10 years, thanks to the apathy shown towards it by different state governments.

The situation becomes unbearable for passengers during rains as there are no sheds for the passengers to take shelter. It becomes difficult for commuters to cross the road as its dotted with pot holes. Not only this, the location of the present terminus is also a threat to the lives of people as it is located in a busy market on the Fatehgarh Sahib-Sirhind Road, and a narrow road is passing through the area.

As the district administration has come out with the claim that a new bus terminus would be constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore, there is hope for passengers. Giving the details, Deputy Commissioner Yashvir Mahajan said that the bus stand would be set up on a four acre land of the municipal corporation near the GT road.

A meeting to this effect was held at the district administrative complex here today in which besides DC Mahajan, Member Parliament Sukhdev Singh Libra, local MLA Kuljeet Singh Nagra, MC president Gurvinder Singh Bhatti were present. It was unanimously decided that the lease of new terminus should be awarded to Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation for 33 years and the corporation would pay Rs 20,000 to the municipal corporation every year. Punjab government had given the final nod for the setting up of the new terminus and with this the long-pending demand of the people would be fulfilled, he added.

Dr Gurnek Singh, former Acting VC of Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, while addressing media persons here today strongly refuted the allegations levelled by suspended VC Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia that the recruitments made in the university during his tenure were against the rules and regulations, and were arbitrary. Justifying the need of recruitments, he said that as the session of the university was to start from July 25, 2011, there was a dire need of the faculty and non teaching staff to conduct the affairs of the university smoothly. He said that Ahluwalia was levelling allegations just to divert attention from his own irregularities as he was not eligible to continue as VC as per the UGC rules. Levelling allegation against Dr Ahluwalia, he said that he deliberately did not plead the case of university for approval by the UGC because the main hurdle in the approval was him being over age as VC.
