The crime file
The format of the half-an-hour show is pre-defined — five minutes for facts of the crime and the rest for analysis. What forced one into committing a criminal act, the turn of events that led to the crime, wasn't one scared of taking the extreme step…every possible cause is dug out and every possible question answered. Crime-based shows have evolved. They aren't just about the histrionics of the show anchors or the dramatised version of how the crime took place. Now, it's the psychology of the criminal that has gained precedence over how crime has been committed.
Gumrah-the end of innocence, has now entered its second season. Crime Patrol hosted by Anup Soni is successfully running its fourth season. Sushant Singh is making a comeback on TV through a crime-based show. "The success rate of crime shows doesn't depend on their entertainment value. What matters more is how effectively they are able to portray reality and create awareness among people," says Karan Kundra, the host of Gumrah. The show has been appreciated for its content, which is all true stories, and how they are presented on television. "The focus is on youth crimes. It's important to realise that due to technology, the generation gap between adolescents and grown-ups has widened further. We need to understand the emotional needs of youngsters to ensure that they don't tread the wrong path," advises Karan. The history of crime-based shows goes back to the mid-90s when India's Most Wanted created some buzz on television. Even with a blink-and-miss foray on TV sets, it brought to the fore some shocking, some moving, some heart-rending realities about crime and criminals in India. In-between whatever came was more of sensationalised stuff, with the sole aim to garner TRPs. But, Anup Soni and the team of Crime Patrol changed it all. They are trendsetters. "I wanted to communicate with the audience, make them aware and not scare them —the reason why the show is less about graphic representation and more about my stating the facts," says Anup. The show has now entered its fourth season and has been renamed as Dastak-Crime Patrol. The show's week-after-week high TRPs suggest that it enjoys a wide audience. From a small survey that the production house conducted, it concluded that from housewives to youngsters studying in college to those working in offices; all of them watch the show. On the other hand, it also suggests that people can get paranoid watching such shows. But Anuja Sharma, a homemaker, who is very regular with the show, says that it has made her realise that she is as vulnerable to the dangers around as are the victims of a certain case. "I have employed domestic helps, my children go to school, I have my old parents staying all by themselves… the same situations are shown on television. The show taught me that life shouldn't be taken for granted." Even if the shows cause a certain amount of paranoia among audiences, it helps them come to terms with bitter realities of the world around them. Ignorance is not always bliss!

Expert talk Dr Parmod Kumar, consultant psychiatrist, Silver Oaks Hospital, Mohali, affirms that crime-based shows affect our thought-process and make us cautious of impending dangers. "But at the same time, the information can be used differently by different people. For example, if a show is about how a youngster committed suicide, it will have some effect on people with suicidal tendencies."

Dropping ANCHOR
She is the super-hot anchor from Punjab; as far as the word anchor goes, we are comfortable with it. We have lived the diet of never-ending sher-o-shayari flowing endlessly from pretty Satinder Satti's mouth. But the word superhot makes us sit up and turn our heads — Baljeet Kaur Johal, a supermodel from Amritsar, Punjab, is taking anchoring to the next level, which we believe is the super-hot level!
A national-level cricket player, who attended the under-19 cricket camp, Baljeet Kaur Johal, is the only model from Punjab who was selected to anchor Commonwealth Games parties in New Delhi. But it is the constant comparison with Satinder Satti that she is getting used to. "I am a supermodel and an anchor with a style of my own. Audiences call me a superhot anchor because I bring in a different kind of entertainment, which people have not seen and heard before," says Baljeet, winner of Big Punjabi Rising Star Female Anchor. As we adjust to the word superhot in the Punjab scenario, Bajleet comes with a new and 'different' thing that she has created. "I have created a fan page, which actors or singers in Punjab don't do. With Punjabi entertainment industry graduating, we should also change the way we present ourselves in front of our fans." Indeed, she has ideas that come at the drop of hat! Baljeet makes her debut in Punjabi movie Dil Tainu Karda Hai Pyaar. However, films are something she is choosy about. "After the adulation and success I have got, I want to be careful with what I do. I get many offers for Punjabi films, but I want to do something which no one has done before," she says. All we can do is wait and watch as she figures out what difference she wants to create. Coming back to the tag of supermodel, when do we see her walking the ramp for top-notch designers in Delhi and Mumbai? "I have been approached by designers to give auditions, but I don't think I would like to work there. I am happy doing whatever I am," adds Baljeet, whose show Pinda Vichon Pind hit the 100- episode mark. Anchoring is becoming smart and crisp, and Baljeet is definitely up to it. "I don't look at anchoring as only talking or interacting with the audiences, it means to keep them engaged in the interesting
conversation." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Daughter to revisit dad’s film
Actress-turned-director Pooja Bhatt says she is keen to revisit her father's 1974 "radical" and "shocking" film Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain and Mahesh Bhatt has welcomed the daughter's decision.
"I would love to look at my father's Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain. It was banned by the censor board that time and he broke a table in frustration. I was very small that time. We didn't have money and he walked back home from there (censor board office) to Shivaji Park. It was the dead end in his life," Pooja told reporters. "Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain was a bit too ahead of its times. It is the kind of a film I would like to re-look and may revisit," added the filmmaker, who is gearing up for the release of her adult film Jism 2. Forty years ago Mahesh Bhatt made Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain with Kabir Bedi, Gulshan Arora and Prema Narayan in the cast. After facing several censorship hiccups, the film finally hit the screens, but neither the critics nor the public appreciated it. In last four decades, the Indian cinema has changed and both audiences and scribes are accepting bold films like The Dirty Picture, and adult comedies such as Delhi Belly. But way back in the 70s, makers of such films were labelled as "beast", says Mahesh Bhatt. "The film got released much later with too many cuts. It was a box office flop, too radical and shocking for the audience. I was young that time... I was 21 or 22," said the filmmaker, who is known for films like Arth, Saaransh and Naam. "Indian cinema feels only bad people have sex and good people fall in love. Since I made a film like that, people thought I was some kind of a beast," said the 63-year-old. The filmmaker has welcomed his daughter's decision of revisiting Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain. "If Pooja wants to re-look at the project, then why not? She can," he said. — IANS

Stingy celeb
Victoria Beckham tried to get away from paying for a new Apple iPad after her son Brooklyn broke it. With their millions, it’s hard to imagine the Beckhams quibbling over the cost of anything.
But when Brooklyn, 13, smashed his iPad, his fashion designer mum was not keen to fork out 600 pounds for a replacement. The 38-year-old wife of footie star David, took Brooklyn to Covent Garden’s Apple Store last week and allegedly made it clear that she would not be fishing out her credit card. “Victoria explained her son had smashed his iPad and wanted another one,” reported a publication. “But there seemed to be no question of her paying for it. “In fact, it was made quite clear she expected a freebie,” the source added.

On wings of change
South import Asin, who has carved a place for herself in Bollywood, still craves for better roles that are written well.
After making a successful debut opposite Aamir Khan in 2008 blockbuster Ghajini, she followed it up with films like Ready, Housefull 2 and Bol Bachchan. But she feels more is yet to come.
"I am happy I have come this far here (Bollywood) on my own without godfathers, grandfathers or millionaire boyfriends. It is rare for an artist to get acceptance by the north as well as the south audiences, and I have thankfully managed that," Asin said in an interview. "But one measures one’s success based on what one has achieved so far in comparison to what one is capable of. And I feel I am capable of much more and for that I need better written roles. I just hope that comes my way," she said. With the huge success of Bol Bachchan, it seems comedy is a lucky genre for Asin but the actress denies it saying it is all about making the right choices. "I don't attribute any "luck" to Bol Bachchan's success. It was an entertaining, commercial film which was bound to do well and I guess I have the knack of picking up such universally appealing, fun, masala movies which turn to be successful," Asin said. "A lot of this so called 'luck' is a combination of making the right choices and hard work," she said. Having tasted success with light hearted films like Ready, Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan, Asin says it is just a coincidence that she has all bubbly movies in her kitty. So does she see herself doing only comedies? "It was just a coincidence that these three movies came to me back-to-back and they were big projects and people would call me foolish if I would have turned them down. Though I love doing comedy, I would also like to explore other genres. I hope such an opportunity comes my way," she said. Despite so many comedy films churning out every year, one hasn't seen a heroine at the centre of a comedy film. Asin feels most of these films are restricted to heroes. "I think not just in comedy films heroes are at the centre, a lot of the stories of our films have meaty parts restricted only to the heroes. I hope that changes," she said. — PTI

Enacting her natural self
Actress Mila Kunis loves playing the nasty roles, although she thinks it would be refreshing to portray a girl-next-door type of person.
The Black Swan actress, believed to be dating Ashton Kutcher, finds it easy to play a nasty character because she is naturally "loud".
"I'm naturally a very loud person, so normally the character I play come in and f**k everything up," she said. "It might be nice to play the girl next door or something. But I don't get those parts for some reason, people don't really believe that I'm that innocent, but I am! I also want to play a superhero. Once I do a really awesome superhero movie, I'm done. Not a cheesy one, but a solid cool superhero, like Superman, but a woman, and cooler," she added. — IANS

Ties of tradition
With Raksha Bandhan around the corner, it's just the beginning of festivities. As the market perks up for the coming festivities (rakhi being the first), there is no denying the fact that Raksha Bandhan is one festival that sees a perfect amalgamation of tradition and modernism.
While on one hand we have the simple fragile thread or dora on display, on the other we have a set of fashionable, more elegant and trendy rakhis decked up with zari, zardosi and pearls. If this was not enough, we even have the light rakhis and cards that have rakhi, chawal, tikki and mishri attached to it. Fascinating as it may read, we scour the markets and list the best. Old is gold Though we have moved on in every aspect, rakhi is one festival that bonds us to tradition. The market is flooded with rakhis that come in holders, bamboo tokris, velvet boxes and strings glued on plain sheets that have Sanskrit shloka's written on it. Rakhis are even available in pan patha, which includes everything right from tikka to chawal, roli and sweet. That's not all - rakhis are also available in traditional boxes lined with velvet that has rakhi, dry fruits and tikka in it. Designer
tadka For those who want to add a designer look, head to Dewsons, as they have designer rakhis to bedeck your brother's wrist. Made by local designers, they have the devotion and hasthkala rakhis in the designer wear. You can also pick Rajasthani, chandan and rakhis from West Bengal here. Beyond tradition Though the traditional rakhi style is still associated with the dhaga or dori, since all things have gone fashionable rakhi too has transformed itself into a trendy gear; using more flashy and decorative materials like gotta, pearls, zari and silk cloth. If you are looking for a simple thread then you have the options in silk threads, threads with beads, rudraksh-like material and even pearls.
Toon mania This festival is special for the younger ones. From Ben 10, Chota Bheem, Doraemon to Spiderman, Batman, Snowman, Superman, Walkie-Talkie and Angry Birds rakhis for the little ones. We bet you too would like some of these for yourself! Work of art Moving beyond suits, we find zari and zardosi work in rakhis as well. Displaying an ethnic appeal, these rakhis have sequins, beads, pearls and kundan to enhance their look. Many zari rakhis also have a satin strand to lend it a graceful appearance. Bhaiya-bhabhi rakhi A festival that celebrates the bond of love and respect, we even have the bhaiya-bhabhi rakhi in market. Espousing the values of virtue in the extended family, there are no special designs for these rakhis but the only thing different is that they are available in pairs. Silver lining Lending a traditional touch, silver rakhis are a craze with people. Not very expensive, silver rakhis are available in customary designs and come in plain bands or are available in intricate patterns studded with semi-precious stones. Well, if you want a silver look-alike, then there are silver-plated rakhis in the market too. Child’s play
Sukhmani When deciding on curtains for children's bedrooms, take into account both the purpose they will serve and the décor of the room. Give your kids' windows a personality of their own with fun kids curtains. If you are in the process of redecorating your child's room, these pointers will help guide you in making the right choice. * Keep in mind the choice and interest of your child. Curtains with patterns of butterflies, cars, cartoon characters work well and add a bit of excitement. * If the room is decorated on a theme, then its best to stick to the theme. In theme decoration however, remember if there are too many patterns involved by means of the wallpaper, rug or the bed coverings, then it is best to go for neutral or solid colour curtains. * You should also consider thick or heavy curtains for a kids' room, as this will block out more light for young children. * Make sure the curtains you choose do not have cords that hang down. These cords can be rather dangerous for young kids; you should similarly avoid curtains accessories with any small pieces that could be pulled off and swallowed. * Choose a fabric that is easy to wash. Cotton, linen, polyester and certain fabric blends can be chosen for the kids room. They wash well and are easy to maintain. * Add interesting and innovative curtain poles for the room to add a bit of drama. Fancy and funky curtain poles enhance the look of your kids' room decor. * Curtain hooks and rings for kids' room come in different styles. To make kids' room appealing, you can choose from a wide range of stylish hooks and rings. * Curtain tiebacks are used to tie curtains with windows so that the light can come in. You can make tiebacks of same fabric for curtains. For a dramatic look, make tiebacks of contrasting or opposite materials. For a girl's room you may even use bright coloured ribbons. * Tassels offer style to your kids' curtains. They are easy to attach and are available in different colors. Attractive colors of tassels make your kids' curtains eye-catching. * Valances for the kids room are a great choice as well. They make the window treatments stand out. Putting on slow greens
Jesse Grewal At this time of year the greens tend to slow down as the growth of the grass gets faster and the course staff are unable to cut the greens when they are too wet. Morning golfers tend to be exposed to these conditions the most. As we putt, the ball tends to get caught by the grass and does not roll truly. The greens get bumpy and slow and while putting into the grain or upslope the greens get very slow. These are a few ways which could help you putt better - Get a lofted putter - Most putters come with a standard loft of 3-4 degrees. The loft of putters thirty years ago used to be 5 degrees as the greens were slower then. As the greens have got faster the loft has been reduced and some putters like the Gel and Yes putters have lofts of less than 2 degrees. Even some mallet putters have very low loft. When the grass is thick the ball tends to hit the grass immediately ahead of the ball and bounce off it and get deflected and also lose speed. If the putter has more loft the ball actually flies the first few inches and then begins rolling. This helps the ball not to lose speed in slow conditions. The contrary is true when the greens are fast. A ball which flies gets backspin and comes up short. With low lofted putters the ball gets rolling immediately and comes off with top spin which helps it roll further. Set your hands a little behind the ball - If you are unable to find a putter with more loft you can create loft by setting your hands a little behind the ball. On fast greens we should have a forward press or set the hands ahead of the ball to decrease the loft of the putter to create top spin. Use a heavier putter - As the greens slow down one has to increase the length of the backswing to be able to hit the ball further. For some this is more difficult than it seems. With a heavier putter one does not have to increase the length of the backswing very much as the momentum is produced by the increase in weight. One can get lead weight strips from a pro shop and tape them to the putter head. |

The second innings
Gurdip Kohli post-motherhood has returned to work. Famous for her role in Sanjeevani, she is currently doing a Disney show, Best of Luck Nikki. Why did you choose to return with Best of Luck Nikki? The role is fun. It gives me a lot of spare time after work. The show is engaging and entertaining. I got this good opportunity post a break. How was the experience of doing Rowdy Rathore? Playing a cop in the film was fun. Sure the role wasn't too lengthy but I enjoyed myself. Being part of the cinema with a popular producer, director and a big star like Akshay Kumar is a worthwhile opportunity. You were offered films during Sanjeevani days. Do you feel you missed it? Well yes, I did get a few good offers back then. But I guess my destiny had television in store for me. I have no regrets because whatever I am today it is because of TV. I only bagged RR because they wanted a known face from TV who people could relate too. Do you feel TV actors are very insecure about work? Yes, out of mind is out of sight but also good actors never really fade away. I am grateful to people as they still remember me from Sanjeevani and my other shows. Did you miss work while you were on a sabbatical? Not at all. My pregnancy and motherhood has kept me very busy. It took up all my time. Being a mom is the best thing in the whole world. You husband Arjun Punjj too was looking at films. Any development on that front? He did quit TV to join films. Currently he is managing his lounge bar and working towards expanding the business too. He is interested in acting be it TV or films. |
