Lightning kills man at Roopa village
: A 24-year-old youth of Roopa village was killed when he got struck by lightning today. Taranjit Singh, the son of Village Sarpanch Avtar Singh, was reportedly working on his fields at noon when it started raining. Suddenly, a heavy lightning was witnessed, and Taranjit was reportedly struck by it. He died on the spot.

Punjabi prof presents research paper
: Punjabi music is serving the interests of globalisation, and is making people numb to cultural sensibilities, said Dr Nahar Singh, professor of Punjabi literature at Panjab University, Chandigarh, during a research paper presentation at Punjabi Bhawan here yesterday. These days "garbage" was being passed off as Punjabi music, and it only served the lower instincts of sexuality and crime, said Dr Nahar.

Support drive against foeticide
: Harsimrat: Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has urged the people to support Nanni Chaan's movement against female foeticide and protection of the environment. Harsimrat, who addressed a series of public meetings in the district on Monday, underlined the importance of protecting the girl child and said there was a need to rectify the declining gender ratio. She also distributed sewing machines among the girls who had successfully completed their training at various centers under the Nanhi Chaan project.

Two booked for duping farmer
: The Malout police has booked owners of a Chandigarh-based company for allegedly selling plants of poor quality to a farmer of Ghumiara village in the district. The police said complainant Joginder Singh had alleged that Deepak Sharma and Rita Sharma having their office in Sector-17, Chandigarh, sold him some plants of poor quality for Rs 1.30 lakh. A case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered at the City Malout police station.

Fruit seller dead
: A fruit seller, who had sustained serious head injuries after his bike skidded off road near Rupewal village here, today died at his residence. The deceased has been identified as Madan Lal (60), resident of Shahkot. He was running a fruit shop at Malsian village. A week ago, he sustained serious head injuries. Since then, he had been struggling for life at hospital. Two days ago, he was discharged from hospital, but last night his condition got deteriorated and he died.

Girl child found in train
:
One-and-a-half-year-old girl was spotted by the railway police in a goods train near Bhanikhurd station last night. She was found in a cement bag kept in a coach. While efforts are on to trace her parents, the women railway police is taking care of the child.

HPSSSB members take oath
: Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Board (HPSSSB) JK Chauhan today administered the oath of office and secrecy to two new members of the board, Naresh Mahajan and BR Jamwal at a function here. Mahajan had recently retired as principal of a government college and BR Jamwal as an HAS officer.

Man arrested, 10 kg charas seized
: In a joint-CID and police operation, Rajinder Kumar was arrested under the NDPS Act after the police caught him carrying 10 kg charas in his private car (HR 29 W 9433) while he was on his way from Sainj in Kullu to his home state. He is in police remand till August 1.

: The following were elected office-bearers of the District Bar Association, Mandi: president - Surinder Pal Parmar; vice-president - Anupam Bhandar; general secretary - Lokender; joint secretary - Parshan Sharma; and members - Ashish Sharma and Diken Rana. Election commissioner Ravi Singh Rana said 279 voters cast their vote for three seats.

Smallest batch of Amarnath pilgrims
: Three days before the conclusion of the annual Amarnath yatra, the smallest batch till now comprising 36 pilgrims left for the cave shrine today. With a mobile security escort of CRPF, the pilgrims comprising 26 men, six women and four children left in two vehicles from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu around 4.40 am, a police official said.
