Wine Sparkle
Wine is not only about pleasing the palate; the salubrious effects can be seen on each part of the body…just try a spa
Jasmine Singh

It has a fragrance, a taste that you have known before. But now, everything about it is different. A spa is more refreshing, more de-stressing and more indulging today. Thanks to the increasing workload of daily life, the wellness industry is getting enough time to come up with innovative ways to straighten the tough nerves in your body! Any wine spa is the latest craze; so, if you are done with enjoying a glass of red wine, let some be poured into the spa or pedicure urli you are savouring!

As light as feather

If you thought wine was just a 'chic' drink to be enjoyed at page 3 parties, Harveen Kathuria, clinic manager with Cleopatra, Sector-8, Chandigarh, opens a world of exciting treatments where wine is used. "Basically, all alcohol, including wine, is supposed to generate heat in the body, but once you get a wine spa done with various ingredients, you would feel as light as feather," says Harveen. Wine spa promises a cooling effect and makes the skin look smooth and soft. It is also good for oily skin, problematic skin and combination skin. She adds, "For wine spa we use various products like wine scrubs, gel, cleansers and balms. Especially for monsoon when we feel sticky, wine spa gives an immediate fresh feel. It is also the best way to beat the tan." This isn't it; the effect gets better when wine is combined with whirlpool water therapy and stone therapy for better results. Wine salts used in whirlpool water therapy are magical on the body. As Harveen puts it, "In summer this is the best way to relax, for winter we combine wine with hot stone therapy." Good for men and women both, this amazing treatment costs Rs 1,800 for a complete head-to-toe wine treatment and Rs 1,200 for just the body spa.

Say it with beer

Well, did you know that beer was a good conditioner for hair? Who would have thought the drinks that give you wings can fly! At Prive, Sector-9, Chandigarh, Munish Bajaj, executive director, has brought out various combinations of wine and the results are visible when customers flood in. "We use Jacobs Greek Red wine, a premium wine which has a polishing effect. All the combinations are prepared in-house where we have sugar, coffee and wine mixed in right proportions, which work as a good scrub." Wine is now seen as a good cleanser for the body and we are talking about external cleanser here!

Says Munish, who combines Kerastase and KeraSkin treatments with wine for customers who want to combine luxury with stress-relieving therapies, "Wine has a relaxing effect when it is combined with certain products like mustard honey, fresh roses and coffee liquor," adds Munish.

Something special

Anil Kataria, proprietor, Headmasters, looks at wine spa as a new trend that has immense benefits. "Wine has exfoliating properties. In fact it is a preferred treatment with brides-to-be as it opens the pores of the skin and affords a glow," says Anil.

Sure it helps

Those who have had an experience with wine spa have good things to say about it. Kartik and Kaunika Dhir, a newly married couple from Moga, booked one at a city spa and went back raving about it. "We had experienced this before in Delhi at Four Seasons Spa and we knew it is the best de-stressing therapy."

Suit yourself

"Wines are helpful in certain skin conditions that are caused by effects of UV rays, especially grape wines are very helpful. However, people who have skin problem like Rosacea should avoid wine as it can get aggravated."

Dr Vikas Sharma, chief consultant dermatologist, National Skin Hospital, Mansa Devi Complex

Dr Neelam Kohli, skin specialist from Mohali suggests that it is important to understand what a wine spa includes and how it works. "Instead of body spa you should first try using the treatment on your hand or feet. Even if you feel slight redness or irritation, don't go for the therapy." Some people are allergic to certain salts and components, but this does not mean if you don't like wine you wouldn't be able to enjoy the spa!

Therapy time

Vinotherapy products usually contain one or more of the following — wine grape skins, seeds, grape seed oil and wine. These are further blended with other ingredients to create Vinotherapy oils, scrubs and masks, which are used in spa therapies.

Wine extracts make the skin firm, improve its elasticity, nourish and stimulate cell multiplication.

Par Excellence
Chipping from deep grass
Jesse Grewal

As the monsoon has set in, the conditions on the golf course have changed rapidly. The grass is growing fast and the rough along the fairway and fringes around the green have become thicker and deeper. This tests our accuracy off the tee and approach shots landing on the green have a distinct advantage over the ones which land in the fringe just off the green. Till a week back one could putt or hit a bump and run chip from off the green.

The basic problem of chipping from the thick grass is that the blades of grass come between the ball and the club face. If there happens to be too much grass the club loses speed and twists in the hands and tends to shut. This causes the ball to go low and left (for right handed players). If there is a little grass which comes between the ball and the club face, the ball comes off with little spin. The ball when hit from the rough also tends to fly longer because of the lack of spin and is commonly called a ‘flier’.

There are two types of shots we can play from the fringe. On being a chip and the other a flop shot. A chip technically is a shot hit with a steep angle of attack and a de-lofted club face. Set upper body more on your forward foot so that the centre of your body is ahead of the ball. This helps the club approach on a steeper angle which creates a descending blow on the ball and avoids most of the grass behind the ball.

During the backswing, the right elbow should fold and stay close to the body and the wrists hinge to lift the club steep. The follow through would be low and short. Do not try to hack the ball out of the grass or scoop it with a high follow through. So basically it is a hinge on the back swing and a hold on the follow through.

A good way to practice this shot is to hit the ball off a down slope. During the backswing the right elbow would fold and the wrists hinge to avoid the ground behind (picture 1). The right elbow should remain close to the body on the downswing otherwise you would hit the ground behind the ball (picture 2). The follow through should be low following the slope of the ground (picture 3). Once you build the feel for this shot use the same technique from thick grass.

Doc Talk
Monsoon and moms-to-be
Dr Vineeta Munjal

Pregnancy is a time when a woman needs to be extra careful. While monsoon is a beautiful season to enjoy, a pregnant woman must take precautions to ensure that it is a completely comfortable time for both her and the baby.

Don’t catch the chill

Getting wet in the rain is fun, but catching a chill can be risky. The foetus is highly sensitive to the temperature fluctuations in the body of the mother. As mothers-to-be are advised not to take medicines during this period, it is advisable not to stay in the rain for too long so that there is no risk of fever later. She must also dry oneself completely after a short stroll in the rain, and keep sufficiently warm thereafter.

A stroll in the rain and enjoying walking through the little pools on the road can be great too. But later, a pregnant woman should wash her feet in normal running water. This is because rain water usually mixes with the sewage water and dirt. It might cause skin infections if not washed properly.

Go for cotton

Leading kid stores now have fashion clothing specially designed for pregnant women. But during monsoon, a pregnant woman should prefer loose cotton clothing. Polyester and other kind of synthetic clothing may lead to rashes, which will be a bother for her.

Wash hands well to ward off infections

Monsoon is a time when infections abound. Cases of conjunctivitis, flu or viral fever increases during this season. In order to keep these at bay, pregnant women should thoroughly wash their hands after coming home from outside.

Wear secure footwear

For moms-to-be, a must-do during this period is wearing secure, comfortable footwear. Walk in the rain if you want to, but never do so barefoot. Avoid shoes with rubber soles, as these may make a person more prone to slips in water.

Street-food is a no-no

Enjoying street food like gol-gappas and bhel puri on a cool monsoon evening sounds great, but must be avoided by pregnant women. The chopped potatoes, onions and black gram (chana) may have been readied by the vendor several hours ago. Food that is not refrigerated tends to spoil fast in this season. Such food is usually stored in half-open conditions, and may have been exposed to the rain too. Contaminated or stale food can cause nausea, headache or diarrhoea, which can be worrisome during pregnancy. Waterborne infections like gastroenteritis, jaundice, typhoid, cholera and hepatitis are also reported in large numbers during the monsoon. It is important for pregnant women to be highly cautious of what they eat outside the home, to keep all such problems at bay. At home too, freshly cooked food should be preferred.

Coconut water or fresh lemonade made at home are good drinks for the monsoon season. Curd is recommended too as an accompaniment to lunch or at other times during the day.

Don't let water accumulate

With the onset of the monsoon, it is important to ensure that stagnant water does not remain accumulated in coolers or in any containers inside or outside the house. Mosquitoes tend to collect on stagnant water and can cause malaria or dengue.

If a pregnant woman has to travel during the monsoon, carrying an umbrella is a good idea, and also some cash which may be useful in case of an emergency. She must be extra cautious about any naked, exposed wires, or while handling electrical appliances. It is also essential to inform the family while stepping out.

Colour code
No more blues. Coloured denims are rocking the fashion scene
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

The one fashion fixture in everyone’s wardrobe has undergone a glam makeover - the basic blue jeans. Having found colour in rainbow hues, it’s the coloured denims that are back in fashion and that too after almost a decade-and-a-half!

While it’s the celebrities like Fergie and Victoria Beckham, and Deepika Padukone back home, who have been the forerunners in endorsing this trend, we suggest tuck those black and faded blue denims in a dark corner of your wardrobe, and show your bright colours with some eye-popping shades from neon blue and psychedelic pink to raspy orange and moss green!

“Coloured denims are definitely ‘in’ this season,” says an employee of Benetton. “Right from carrot to olive green and even red, the trend is of perky and experimental colours.”

Talking colours in denims, as long as it’s bright, it’s in, but with regard to cuts and styles, it’s strictly skinny! “Baggy pants are not an option when it comes to colour, irrespective of the gender. Cropped pants too can be considered when going for brighter hues but remember the thumb rule - they have to be fitted. Choosing the perfect colour is one of the most daunting tasks,” says Ritu Kochar, corporate director, INIFD. She advices, “Always choose a colour that complements your skin tone; other than that body size is also an important determinant. If you are on the heavier side and skinny jeans don’t look good on you, there is very little chance that bright hued pants would suit you.”

Though coloured denim is ‘the’ fashion statement, one has to be careful in co-ordinating the look. “Plain shirts and tees are the best bet with candy coloured denims,” says Rajnish Jain from Meena Bazaar. He adds, “Since the bottom is bright, contrasting, neutral or subtle shade of tops is advised. One can go for anything from a three-fourth sleeved white shirt to sleeveless lycra top.”

Accesorise yourself

Accessories complete the look. And belts are the best to start with; slim is in, so go for thin belts in metallic colours. They are quite a rage.

In footwear, wedges are a hit and are casual as well as chic. Ballet flats peep-toe pumps, flip-flops and thong sandals all are worthy options.

In bags; sling bags, satchels and totes are the safest bet.

Indulge
All that glitter

This monsoon season, Radhika and Nirmal Maheshchand bring forth a show of designer silver jewellery titled Creations 2012 and handpicked heritage antique furniture and replicas from the Raj gharanas.

It combines the luminescent quality of silver with magical stones of ruby, emeralds, amethysts, rose quartz, golden topaz, turquoise, peridots, pearls et all, to add a sensual appeal. It caters to a wide canvas of both traditional and western tastes of the modern woman.

There is an offering for every occasion, at an affordable price and is a perfect alternative to gold jewellery. The price range starts from Rs. 350 onwards.

The heritage antique and replicas furniture collection has a comprehensive range of jhoolas, Goanese tables, mirrors, hat stands, consoles, coffee tables, beds, sofas etc.

I want to revive my grandfather's banner: Aditya

Aditya Samanta and Nazia Hussain Debutant actor Aditya Samanta, who is making his foray into films with home production Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai, says he joined Bollywood to revive his late grandfather's banner Shakti Films.

Film-maker Shakti Samanta had churned out classics like Aradhana, Amar Prem, An Evening in Paris and Aditya said he hopes his modern day love story also leaves the same impression on the audience's mind.

"Our banner is known for producing some of the best films in the Indian film industry. People still remember my grandfather for delivering back to back hits and I hope I continue his trend. I am nervous and excited. We all have put in so much effort in the film to meet audience's expectation," said Aditya.

The 26-year-old actor will be seen playing the lead role in the love story set in the backdrop of Rajasthan. He has been cast opposite Sanjay Dutt's niece Nazia Hussain.

Aditya said that he wanted to be a director but it was his grandfather's wish to see him as an actor and Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai was his idea.

"It was last in my wish list to launch myself as an actor. I was always interested in film production and direction. My grandfather attended a play, where I was acting as a lead. He liked my performance so much that he told my father (Ashim) that he wanted me to cast him as the lead in his next project. But, unfortunately he passed away," he said.

The film will hit theatres on July 20 and also stars Rati Agnihotri, Farida Jalal, Mukesh Tiwari and Mohnish Behl.

Aditya started his career a little late as compared to other star kids, but he has no qualms about it.

"I may be couple of years late as compared to others but I feel I am confident now to be an actor at this age. I feel prepared to play any character now," he said.

As a newcomer, he does not want to restrict himself to any particular genre and would like to be part of a mixed-bag of films. "Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai is a do or die project for me. I think it will decide my fate as an actor. If I perform well then only I can get other offers. It's not mandatory that I will work for my home production, I am ready to work with other production houses too," he said. —PTI

Playing smart on wheels

Kim Kardashian Kim Kardashian was pulled over by cops at the grand opening of her own store after they found out that the $ 300,000 custom black Rolls Royce she was driving did not have a license plate.

The California Highway Patrol saw Kardashian driving down the 101 Freeway and stopped her because the plate was missing, reported a publication.

The 30-year-old apparently kept the plates in her glove compartment and got away without being ticketed. She has had the luxurious car for a couple of weeks now.

The Keeping Up With The Karadashians star rolled up the new Dash store on Melrose in Hollywood recently in her new Rolls-Royce with boyfriend Kanye West by her side. They went in the store after being mobbed by fans and paparazzi. — PTI

A dash of realism

Producer David Selvan is making a film on famed South African Indian golfer Papwa Sewgolum, which will star a Bollywood actor in the lead role.

Sewgolum won a national tournament during the apartheid era but had to receive his award in the rain outside because he was not allowed onto the premises of the Durban Country Club due to racial segregation laws at the time.

"People who watch the film will be moved by the story of Papwa's rise against all odds in an uplifting tale," locally-based producer Selvan said on the periphery of the Durban Film Festival that started in Sewgolum's hometown recently. A Bollywood A-lister with some knowledge of golf would be sought to play the lead role, while an established international actor will be signed up play the role of Graham Wulff, the white chemist who befriended and guided the career of Sewgolum. Despite his very unconventional swinging techniques, Sewgolum achieved international fame and a book about his life was sold out on release a few years ago.

Selvan said they would like to have the premieres of the still untitled movie with a budget of 50 million in 2013 in Durban and Los Angeles. — PTI

Freida’s combo of splendour and tragedy

Freida Pinto Freida Pinto, who became an overnight celebrity after the multiple-Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire, views her new film Trishna as a "very beautiful and yet tragic" tale of a village girl torn between her traditional upbringing and the dreams of a girl from modern India.

Based on Thomas Hardy's classic Tess of the d'Urbervilles, British film-maker Michael Winterbottom's newest film is set in rural Rajasthan. It has Pinto playing the title role of Trishna, an auto-rickshaw driver's daughter who falls for a rich boy.

"I guess the journey is very beautiful and at the same time very tragic," she says, "because it goes from being really innocent to being in a situation of almost desperation and finally to redemption."

"It's quite an intense journey for one girl to go through," said Pinto. She felt Trishna was a tough role to play "because it's so different from what I am in real life," said Pinto, who has a very outspoken personality and "just can't kind of lay back and just get bombarded with things that I don't believe in."

"So I guess that was really hard for me, especially because we didn't really have a solid script," she said. "So every time, I would try to say something or speak out against something, Michael would just say, 'No, you don't say anything in this situation. Just observe'."

"Now as an actor who is very outspoken, it was very tough and again such a welcome challenge," said Pinto, who "would love to be something like that again."

To prepare for her role, she spent some time in Rajasthan's Osian village in a family setting and interviewed a number of girls who worked at hotels and one who worked as ground staff in an airline.

"It was very interesting that all the stories were different from the other, but the bottom line came down to 'whatever dad thinks is probably right and we'll just follow that or whatever our future husband thinks is right is going to be our life from then on,'" she said.

"And that for me was the startling reality that I had to just come to terms with to understand my character better," Pinto said. Pinto, who came to limelight with her very first film, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, considers both Boyle and Winterbottom as "absolutely amazing film-makers," with definitely different working styles.

For one thing they are "very completely different films", Pinto said. " 'Slumdog' is a love story that has a beautiful message of hope at the end of it. And the other one is a tragic love story which can be very sad."

Secondly, while she had a detailed script for Slumdog Millionaire, "as far as Trishna went, all the experience I had gathered was going to be put to the test with Michael because we did not have a solid script and I had to really let go if I had any kind of inhibitions."

Pinto thinks her co-star Anurag Kashyap, who has made a mark for himself in Indian cinema as a brilliant director, is a "really good" actor too. "I think, yeah, if he gives acting a shot, he will be pretty good."

She hopes some day she'll get a chance to work with Kashyap "because he is such an eclectic film-maker, who is not afraid to take challenges upon himself and is so brave".

Asked if she feared being typed as an 'exotic Indian beauty' by Hollywood, Pinto said, "I am not afraid of that any more because I have made sure people don't look at me like that." And does Bollywood have anything to offer her? "Well, when people use the term 'Bollywood', I hope they are including Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and all these wonderful film-makers as well because definitely I would love to work with them," said Pinto, adding, "Why not?"

Although she lives in Los Angeles these days for convenience's sake, Mumbai will always be number one for Pinto because "it has made me the person I am today, very outspoken". "Oh, my god, there is no comparison. Mumbai is Mumbai." —IANS

Clearing it all!

Shruti Haasan Producer Kumar Taurani has rubbished reports of signing Shruti Hassan for a film to be directed by Prabhu Deva.

There was a buzz in B-town that Shruti will be seen opposite Taurani's son Girish, who is making his debut in Bollywood. The untitled film will be directed by Prabhu Deva.

"We have not yet finalised her. Wait for sometime. Next week we will finalise," said Taurani.

Asked if he has approached Shruti, Taurani said, "I can't comment on that." He also refused to divulge details if the movie will be a remake or an original but said that the film will go on floors in August.

Meanwhile, the producer is excited about his next home production Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story, featuring Vivek Oberoi and Neha Sharma.

"As Vivek has already played the role of a gangster, it is a big plus point for us. There is this sudden excitement when people come to know that Vivek is playing a gangster. I think gangster roles are a monopoly for Vivek," Taurani said.

"When my director narrated the story to me, I felt Vivek was the perfect choice, as he knows nuances of a gangster," he added.

A romantic comedy, Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story, revolves around Vivek, a gangster and Neha, an educated, subtle girl, and how they fall in love.

"Even though it is a romantic comedy, there is an element of seriousness and a bit of violence. But this (romantic comedy) part is a new thing. I liked this more as it was a mixture of both. It is a complete entertainer," said Taurani. —PTI

The ring matters

Antonio Banderas Actor Antonio Banderas has put rumours to rest that he and his wife of seventeen years Melanie Griffith are parting ways after he showed off his wedding band at an event in Spain.

I know this is just a show and people who really go through this suffering will know what the pain is, but for me this unit is like my family.”

Krystle also does not have any problem with the fact that as of now Niaa is stealing the show. “I have no problem with taking a back seat. All said and done, the show will always be about the intense love between the two sisters.”
