BJP flays govt for power crisis
Ambala, July 4 He said while the state was reeling under acute power crises, ministers were on foreign trips. Vij alleged that due to poor financial position, the state had not been able to buy power from the central pool and it was sad that the people all over the state were agitating for power and water even after 65 years of Independence. A fire broke out in a godown of a junk dealer at Ghas Mandi in Ambala City this morning. More than 15 fire tenders struggled for over nine hours to control the flames. Godown owner Satinder Pal Singh Bunty claimed that goods worth Rs 15 lakh were destroyed in the fire. He said that around 12.30 a.m. he had received a phone call from the residents that his shop was in inflames. No loss of life was reported. A short circuit is stated to be the reason behind the fire. |

BSNL subscribers a harried lot
Kalka, July 4 The subscribers have to go to the BSNL office to deposit their bills
every time. On the other hand, the BSNL broadband subscribers of the area also alleged that due to the indifferent attitude of the dept of BSNL, Ambala , they had been inflated telephone bills. For getting their telephone connection restored, they had to approach the local BSNL office and had to get the receipt number of their bills entered in the computer, they added. Sources in the BSNL said accounts officer (AO), Telecom Revenue Authority, was the bill issuing authority, which sent the bill through the postal department. The AO could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. |

PU celebrates God particle's sighting
Chandigarh, June 4 Professors Vipin Bhatnagar, Suman Bala, JB Singh, JN Kohli and Manjit Kaur have contributed to the project at the biggest particle physics laboratory, CERN. The God particle is believed to be a crucial building block which lead to the creation of universe. Though theoretically it has always been the basis of particle study, it's existence has been established for the first time. "The entire university is proud because we have got our due space in international research. While I was at CERN, what made me proud was that I represented PU and contributed to this great event," said Dr Suman Bala. |

Insurance company penalised
Chandigarh, July 4 The forum comprising president PD Goel and member Rajinder Singh Gill directed the opposite party to pay the medical expenses incurred on the treatment of the complainant's husband to the tune of Rs 2,95,591. The forum also directed the respondents to pay Rs 15,000 as litigation costs. The complainants, Davinder Kaur (complainant number 1) and her husband Manmohan Singh (complainant number 2), submitted that complainant number 1 had obtained a medi claim policy "Happy Family Floater Policy" for a year from the opposite parties valid from September 15, 2009 covering all her family members for any hospitalisation expenses. It was averred that complainant number 2, on account of sudden chest pain, visited Shivalik Hospital, Sector 69, Mohali. He was recommended definitive invasive and interventional coronary angioplasty. Thereafter, he was admitted as an indoor patient to Shivalik Hospital on September 11, 2010. CART was done on the same day, which revealed that he was having single vessel disease. He underwent PTCA, LAD and was discharged from the hospital on September 14 and a bill of Rs 2,95,591 was paid by complainants, on the assurance that the same would be reimbursed. Thereafter, the complainants sent the claim form to the opposite parties along with all relevant documents through courier, but the latter did not settle the claim forcing the complainant to file a complaint with the district forum. The counsel for the opposite parties stated that the policy taken by the complainants from the opposite party was in the first year of its inception and the patient had been diabetic for the last two-three years. It was stated that the patient was also suffering from hypertensive (HTN) and CLL as per statement of patient and hospital records, but he did not disclose these facts in the proposal form. It was stated that the claim was not payable, so it was repudiated under Clause No.4.1, 4.3 and condition No.5.9 of the policy. Complainant number 2 was having a history of diabetes, which he himself had admitted in the statement. Prime Heart Hospital had sent the request through Raksha TPA (opposite party number 2) for cashless facility, which was denied. The opposite party number 2 did not turn up despite notice, hence was proceeded against ex parte. The forum opined that complainant number 2 was not suffering from any pre-existing disease and the opposite parties had failed to produce any evidence to prove the pre-existing disease. Thus, the repudiation of the claim was illegal and unjustified, the forum stated. |

HC issues notice to rights ADGP
Chandigarh, July 4 The notice came on a petition filed by Jagjit Kaur of Shiar Laddi Patti village of Ludhiana district. The petition has been filed against the state of Punjab, the Director-General of Punjab Police and another respondent. Though the allegations are against an SSP, his name has not been mentioned in the petition. A reference to it can only be found in an annexure to the petition. She claims to be in possession of some recordings of the officer molesting her in a Chandigarh hotel. The petitioner, involved with an NGO, claimed she approached the office of the then SSP, Sangrur, on June 16, 2010 to lodge a complaint of fraud against Sukhwinder Singh. But “under the instructions of the SSP”, police personnel thrashed her with batons after tying her legs. After beating her up, the in charge of the police station Sadar Ahmedgarh and Sangrur police station detained her till midnight and forcefully obtained her signatures on papers that she sustained injuries after slipping from a bus, she alleged. Later, she claimed she got herself medically examined, which revealed she suffered internal injures and had fractured her arm. The petitioner further claimed that the Punjab State Human Rights Commission, acting on her complaint on June 27 last year, directed a high-level inquiry into the incident. But, the inquiry was yet to be initiated by the state. Taking up her petition, a Division Bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh issued a notice to the ADGP (human rights). After coming out of the courtroom, Jagjit Kaur claimed before the media that she had been molested by a senior IPS officer of the 1997 batch of the Punjab police cadre. She claimed that the officer was posted in Chandigarh and the then Punjab DGP was apprised of the matter on March 23, 2011. |

Police recovers gold worth Rs 75 lakh from fraud accused
Zirakpur, July 4 As many as 74 different cases of cheating have been registered at the Phase I police station in Mohali against Dolly Arora, alias Jyoti Gupta, and her husband Deepak Arora, alias Ravi Gupta. The couple had defrauded several persons while running their immigration offices, Jet International Consultant Service at Phase V and Jet International Placement Service at Phase VI. "The two have been declared proclaimed offenders in several cases," said GS Bhullar, SSP, Mohali. Giving details, Bhullar said during investigation, Tarlochan Singh, Zirakpur SHO, had found that the couple had also opened a jewellery showroom, Jet Jewellers at Phase VI, where they used to take gold jewellery from those customers, who did not have sufficient amount in their bank accounts. "They took jewellery from such customers and then they got loans after mortgaging that gold in different finance companies, including Manpuran Gold Finance Company, Phase XI, Mohali, and Muthoot Fincop at Sector 22, Chandigarh. The recovered gold belonged to their customers," said Bhullar while adding that the police was hopeful of more recovery of gold. Deepak Arora, who is still at large, was not on good terms with Dolly. The police added that it was also looking for Madhu, an employee, and accomplice of Aroras in the case. |

Two arrested for cyber crime
Mohali, July 4 The police has arrested two persons, identified as Veer Davinder Singh, alias Lucky, a resident of Shahpur Kandi, who was posted as a junior engineer in Jugial, Pathankot district, and Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Amritsar. Pradeep Kumar, AIG/EOW (Crime)-cum-SSP, state cyber crime investigation, said the modus operandi of the gang was to make online purchases of gold coins through fraudulent debit transactions by using the information of ATM card of victims. The police has recovered gold coins worth Rs 3 lakh, one computer, two mobile phones and two SIM cards from their possession. Veer Davinder Singh was the mastermind, who used to steal the information of ATM-cum-debit card numbers, said Pradeep Kumar while adding that most of the victims were from Pathankot. "The accused used to do online purchases of gold. The gang had purchased gold coins amounting to more than Rs 7 lakh," said Pradeep Kumar. The SSP said a team comprising Inspector Bahadur Singh and Ved Parkash, in charge, Cyber Crime Lab, had unearthed the crime. The accused will be produced in the court
tomorrow. |

NBA director hunts for city talent
Chandigarh, July 4 Troy, who is in the city, to head a junior talent hunt initiative as a part of the 2012 Junior NBA/Junior WNBA basketball development program in India, was seen enjoying his maiden visit, here. The talent hunt will be organised on July 6, at New Public School sector 18, here. During his first day, he has taken a special on-court clinics and classroom sessions aimed for the coaches and inspiring coaches. “For the past two and half years, we have been organising the talent hunt programmes for the players of junior level. We have been to Delhi, Banglore, Pune and the response was tremendous. In the city, we are organising the event for the first time and hopefully, we will get an overwhelmed response from region’s players.” said Troy. Highlighting on the talent hunt programme, he said, “A total of 10 players (5 boys and 5 girls) will be selected form each city. And the selected pair will qualify for the national-level selection, to be held on July 14, at Tyag Raj Stadium, New Delhi. Then further, one boy and one girl will be selected for the exposure trip to the USA, where they will be meeting NBA players, coaches and also get a chance to undergo a proper training session, for few hours,” said Troy. Adding further, “The trails will include skill, speed and accuracy tests. The trails will be organise through out the day and the best scorers or best timing holder will be selected for the further stage,” said Troy. When asked about the present infrastructure, in nation, he said, “The infrastructure is an essential part and as per my personal experience, the concrete courts are as essential as wooden courts. It all depends upon, how we use it. During this particular class, I was telling the presence about the usage of infrastructure,” said Troy adding further, “Except infrastructure, the coaches also play an important role in nurturing a player. I suggested them to have a broad and learning vision. After all, it is all about the knowledge one has,” said Troy. City biker wins Mughal motorbike racing rally
Chandigarh, July 4 The rally was organised by Himalayan Motor Sports at the national-level and this is for the first time the motorbikes and two-wheelers were included in the rally. Mohit stood first in the rally and won a cash prize of Rs 50,000. “My father is a real inspiration behind my achievement. He is a veteran biker and participated in many rallies. I have been participating in different rallies since 2009. I bagged the 2010 SJOBA rally and also secured third position in Rolon Dirt Track
Championship 2010. In the same year, I won the Raid De Himalayas Alpine held 2010,” said Mohit. He also won the 2011 SJOBA and also won laurels in OYA Dirt Track, dirt track, expert class and local class categories. |
