12 vendors challaned for selling tobacco to minor
Patiala, June 29 The team comprising nodal officer of Tobacco Control Cell, Patiala, Dr BK Dhawan, Krishan Kumar, deputy mass media and information officer Bhag Singh and district BCC facilitator Sarabjeet Singh conducted surprise checks on tobacco products selling shops. Almost all the shops were found violating Section-6 of the Tobacco Control Act-2003, which defines that no tobacco product can be sold to any one below 18 years of age. A total fine of Rs 2,200 was collected from the 12 vendors. All the vendors were further warned to remove their vends falling within 100 yards of the Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, otherwise a strict action would be taken under law. Civil Surgeon Patiala Dr Virinder Singh Mohi stressed that the campaign will continue in near future also for strict implementation n of this Act. |

Five incidents of theft reported
Chandigarh, June 29 Vaibhav Kumar Dixit of Mani Majra reported that thieves stole four mobile phones and Rs 1,000 from his house. Ranjeet Singh of Sector 52 reported that thieves stole two mobile phones, gold ornaments and Rs 20,000 from his house. Thieves also stole gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 35,000 and Rs 20,200 from the house of Sanjeev Jain at Sector 45. The police registered four cases of theft. The superintendent of Banyan Tree, a school at Sector 48, KL Sharma, reported that unidentified persons stole six CCTV cameras from the school premises between May 26 and June 26. The police said the school was shut since May 26 due to the summer vacation. A case was registered at the police station in Sector 31. |

Two cases of rape registered
Mohali, June 29 They allegedly took her on the motorcycle to some place and repeatedly raped her. After gaining consciousness she raised the alarm, the two men again made her unconscious by forcing her to smell some substance. She said when she regained consciousness again she found herself on the Kharar bus stand. She said she could recognise the alleged rapists if they were brought before her. The police has registered a case under Sections 363, 366, 328 and 376 of the IPC against Bhupinder Singh, alias, Bhola, and Aman, residents of Behbalpur village. In the second case, reported from Saini Majra village a woman complained that she was allegedly raped by Beant Singh, a resident of the same village. She told the police that she was learning computers in Mullanpur Garibdas. About three months ago, she had gone there for some personal work and was waiting for a bus when Beant Singh, who was on a motorcycle, offered to give her a lift. As he belonged to the same village, she accepted the offer. She said that he took her to his old house where he gave her a glass of water after which she felt intoxicated. He then allegedly raped her and made her video in nude form. She said that she was afraid to tell anybody about the crime. However, when she got know that he was distributing the video through mobile she complained to the police. police has registered a case under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC against Beant Singh. |

Burglary
Mohali: Jatinder Pal Singh, a resident of Phase VII, complained to the police that he had gone to Chak Mithe Khera village on June 22 along with members of his family. When he came back he saw that the lock of the house was broken and items were lying scattered in the house. The thieves had taken away refrigerator, air conditioner and some other items.

Nine-hole golf camp from July 6
Chandigarh, June 29 The basics of the sport will be taught in the camp said sources. Harmmet, a 1997 Arjuna awardee and former Asian Tour winner, is in the city to promote golf among youngsters. "I have been working on this format from a long time as this is the best format to promote and teach the youth. Somehow on-course training is missing in the city as the players are taught on ranges," said Harmeet. Adding further he said, "My stress will be on improving overall game, including first hand, technique, methodology and strategy. I hope all this will help the the youngsters of the region to uplift their game.” |
