12 vendors challaned for selling tobacco to minor

Patiala, June 29
A team of district health and family welfare department with the help of a minor boy nabbed 12 vendors violating the Tobacco Control Act-2003 and issued challans here yesterday. The minor boy posed as a dummy customer and went on to purchase tobacco from 12 shops. Interestingly, none of the vendors refused him.

The team comprising nodal officer of Tobacco Control Cell, Patiala, Dr BK Dhawan, Krishan Kumar, deputy mass media and information officer Bhag Singh and district BCC facilitator Sarabjeet Singh conducted surprise checks on tobacco products selling shops.

Almost all the shops were found violating Section-6 of the Tobacco Control Act-2003, which defines that no tobacco product can be sold to any one below 18 years of age. A total fine of Rs 2,200 was collected from the 12 vendors. All the vendors were further warned to remove their vends falling within 100 yards of the Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, otherwise a strict action would be taken under law.

Civil Surgeon Patiala Dr Virinder Singh Mohi stressed that the campaign will continue in near future also for strict implementation n of this Act.

Hit by car, Home Guard succumbs to injuries

Dera Bassi, June 29
The home guard who was injured after he was hit by a speeding car in Dera Bassi today succumbed to his injuries on Thursday evening at GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The deceased was identified as Nar Singh, a resident of nearby Bijjanpur village.

Notably, Nar was injured in an accident at Dera Bassi. The car driver fled from the spot along with car.

The police has registered a case against unidentified car driver under Section 304.

Five incidents of theft reported

Thefts continue to create a ruckus in the city. Thieves have stolen cash, jewellery, mobile phones, computers, copper wires and hard disks, worth lakhs.
Pardeep Nagar of Sector 51 reported that thieves stole four bundles of copper wire, computer hard disks and Rs 52,000 from his plot at Phase I in the Industrial Area.

Vaibhav Kumar Dixit of Mani Majra reported that thieves stole four mobile phones and Rs 1,000 from his house. Ranjeet Singh of Sector 52 reported that thieves stole two mobile phones, gold ornaments and Rs 20,000 from his house.

Thieves also stole gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 35,000 and Rs 20,200 from the house of Sanjeev Jain at Sector 45. The police registered four cases of theft.

The superintendent of Banyan Tree, a school at Sector 48, KL Sharma, reported that unidentified persons stole six CCTV cameras from the school premises between May 26 and June 26.

The police said the school was shut since May 26 due to the summer vacation. A case was registered at the police station in Sector 31.

Two cases of rape registered

Two cases of rape were reported from different villages in Mohali district here today.
According to the police, a woman of Sekhan Majra village complained that on June 23 she was coming back around 3.30 am after answering the call of nature when two men on a motorcycle approached her and forced her to smell some substance which made her unconscious.

They allegedly took her on the motorcycle to some place and repeatedly raped her. After gaining consciousness she raised the alarm, the two men again made her unconscious by forcing her to smell some substance.

She said when she regained consciousness again she found herself on the Kharar bus stand. She said she could recognise the alleged rapists if they were brought before her.

The police has registered a case under Sections 363, 366, 328 and 376 of the IPC against Bhupinder Singh, alias, Bhola, and Aman, residents of Behbalpur village.

In the second case, reported from Saini Majra village a woman complained that she was allegedly raped by Beant Singh, a resident of the same village.

She told the police that she was learning computers in Mullanpur Garibdas. About three months ago, she had gone there for some personal work and was waiting for a bus when Beant Singh, who was on a motorcycle, offered to give her a lift. As he belonged to the same village, she accepted the offer. She said that he took her to his old house where he gave her a glass of water after which she felt intoxicated. He then allegedly raped her and made her video in nude form. She said that she was afraid to tell anybody about the crime.

However, when she got know that he was distributing the video through mobile she complained to the police. police has registered a case under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC against Beant Singh.

Burglary

Mohali: Jatinder Pal Singh, a resident of Phase VII, complained to the police that he had gone to Chak Mithe Khera village on June 22 along with members of his family. When he came back he saw that the lock of the house was broken and items were lying scattered in the house. The thieves had taken away refrigerator, air conditioner and some other items.

City team outplay Ambala

In the ongoing three-match cricket series, the Chandigarh team defeated Ambala by seven wickets at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, today.
Batting first, the visiting side posted a total of 154 runs before getting all-out in 37th over. Jai contributed a brilliant 75-run off 85 balls, while Aasim added 19 runs in the team's total. For bowling side, Sourav was the highest wicket taker He grabbed 4 for 16 runs, while Ujwal took 3 for 31 and Parvesh took 2 for 36.

In reply, Chandigarh team achieved the target in 25th over with Utkarsh (74 off 65) and Parvesh Sharma (54 off52) scoring the lion's share. Bowler Shivam claimed 2 wickets for 38 while Ram took 1 for 32.

Nine-hole golf camp from July 6

A nine-hole golf camp will be organised by Harmeet Kahlon, a professional golfer and director golf at Chandigarh Golf Club, once a week for next six months.
The camp will start from July 6. The camp will be organised for junior and sub junior golfers.

The basics of the sport will be taught in the camp said sources. Harmmet, a 1997 Arjuna awardee and former Asian Tour winner, is in the city to promote golf among youngsters.

"I have been working on this format from a long time as this is the best format to promote and teach the youth. Somehow on-course training is missing in the city as the players are taught on ranges," said Harmeet.

Adding further he said, "My stress will be on improving overall game, including first hand, technique, methodology and strategy. I hope all this will help the the youngsters of the region to uplift their game.”
