Copybook saga
There has always been a war between originals and its copies; whoever wins it we don’t really know! The latest to join this league is the brand from UK Fitflop, which manufactures platform slippers with various embellishments — sequins, stones, floral sandals and swarovskis. And we know that the hullabaloo regarding this particular brand has increased since Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was spotted wearing Fitflops during her pregnancy days, which were original but of course! On the other hand, there is an exact copy of the brand and that too at a lesser price, which is flooding the markets these days.
So, do people really think in terms of particular brands or can they do with fakes? Says Sanjana Ahuja, BA final-year student at MCM College, “I will always sport originals and not anything fake; people get to know whether you are wearing fakes or originals by the way you carry it.” We wonder about the budget of college-going youngsters! “I won’t buy a brand that is beyond my budget,” explains Sanjana. In the market, one can find fakes right from Louis Vuitton handbags, Ray Ban sunglasses, Gucci shoes to Juicy Couture platform slippers at affordable prices. Does anyone mind spending less! “It all depends on one’s personal choices; if a fake is available at a reasonable price I would not mind buying it as I’m not at all a brand freak. I love to be street-smart,” says Rose Sardana, who has just completed her graduation from Chandigarh. We wonder how much of a deal it is to wear or carry the replicas. “I would say it is not a big deal at all because in college there are so many students who are into buying such stuff, which is in trend,” chips in Rose. Is carrying an original a matter of prestige? “It is definitely for other people to notice what one is wearing. While one is taking up education, it is the age where one needs quantity and does not care about quality,” says Mannat Mundi, a student of School of Communication Studies, PU. What about her personal take on showing-off fakes? “I would never go in for fakes because once I tried and got to know the difference between an original and a fake,” adds Mannat. And is knowledge about brands important? “It is essential to know about things like logos, the way a brand name is spelt and embedded on the product,” says Priyanka Thakur, an MBA student from Chandigarh. Whatever the verdict, originals and fakes have their own loyal clientele and that is what makes the fashion world so competitive! |
Age no bar
The confidence to win does not come with age, but with enthusiasm and ability to work hard. Gargi Duggal, a home-maker from Panchkula, who recently won the title of Gladrags Mrs India 2012 (North Zone), has certainly proved that one can walk the ramp at any age. How did she end up participating in the competition? "I did not exactly plan to go for it, but my husband literally pushed me. This gave me the confidence to go ahead," says
Gargi.
What was the feeling of winning like? "I gave my best shot and to be honest, I was rather enjoying the victory of my kids when my name was announced; at that moment I was shocked," adds Gargi. Maureen Wadia who is the force behind the Gladrags Beauty Pageant was one of the judges along with two Kings XI Punjab players. The competition was held in Chandigarh some time back. Is the pageant only about being beautiful? "No it is actually a complete personality contest; particularly for this title they needed a woman of substance, one who could multi-task," says Gargi. She has two sons, Angad and Aryan Duggal, who also won titles of Gladrags Little Masters first runner- up, senior category, (North Zone), and Gladrags Little Masters first runners up, junior category, (North Zone), respectively. "I feel as if I am on top the world; my parents and friends are very proud of me. So what if I ended as runners-up; I will work hard for the grand finale which is in October in Mumbai," says Angad. And Aryan, who is all of seven, wants to become a model when he grows up. "I will never lose heart and always have the competitive spirit because I have experienced it earlier when I reached the judges round of the DID Little Masters and not selected further," chips in Aryan. If on one hand there is a family winning, on the other there is Madhav Banati from Chandigarh who is just eleven years and has won the title of Gladrags Little Masters, senior category (North Zone). "I am very thrilled," says Madhav. Madhav has also won medals at the National Dance Sport in the Latin American Dance Category. Says Madhav, "I have been dancing since the age of seven; I would love to become an actor in the future." Madhav had also reached the judges round of DID Little Masters and acted in a movie Bhagwan Tera Bhala Ho in the lead role. You don't leave opportunities when they come your way, whatever the age! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

celeb point First of all a big thank you for the response to last weeks write up! I am glad it stirred you. I hope we all can do our bit as self aware citizens wherever we are. This year is a year for big films for me, I realised now is not the time to do a great yet small film with no marketing because nobody will be aware that a good film came and went. A case in point my film Monica in no way is less than No One Killed Jessica of that genre. However, it lacked good marketing and publicity. Aapki film Monica kab ayegi, they ask and I say woh to kab ki aa gayi. The response is, acha, pata hi ni chala! They are right to make people aware is so important these days. To blow your own trumpet was embarrassing to some earlier but now it is the norm of the day. Come see me, my production we harp it and how! I used to think only hardcore commercial films have budgets to promote themselves big time. But it is heartening to see times changing. Even if you make a small yet good film, big budgets are kept for marketing. I wonder when they are good why they need to keep doing in your face publicity but the fact is roye bina to maa bhi dhoodh ni deti! A Vicky Donor was a miracle. Even realistic makers like Dibakar Banerji and Anurag Kashyap are resorting to big time marketing. And why not, no star cast film but yet Anurag made everyone talk about it and be aware of it at the Cannes film festival. And what we noticed there, we obviously became curious ki kya hai film main. Of course a film will last because of its own steam but to arouse the audiences curiosity enough to get them to theatres initially is the mantra. I learnt my Monica lesson! What's the point working so hard, missing on all the awards and opportunities because of terrible marketing? So this year is big films, big presentation and big publicity. Naam bade aur darshan bhi bade! In this one, I follow the herd. (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

GET PHYSICAL Composed of bone, cartilage, ligaments, muscle and tendons, your knee is one of your body's most complex joints. The knee joint allows you to run, walk and play sport. Bad knees are bad news when it comes to staying active. Some simple exercises can keep your knees healthy. Here are some exercises you can do to both stretch and strengthen the knee area: 1 Hamstring Curl: Hold onto the back of a chair or counter top. Flex one knee up as far as is comfortable, bringing your heel towards your buttock. Hold for 5 - 10 seconds, and then lower slowly. If possible, do not touch the floor between repetitions. (Ankle weights will increase the intensity.) Do 1-3 sets with 12-15 repetitions each. Remember to rest in between sets. 2Wall slide: Leaning with your back against a wall, bend your knees 30°, sliding down the wall, then straighten up again. Move slowly and smoothly, using your hands on the wall for balance. Keep feet and legs parallel, and do not allow knees to go out over the toes. Repeat 5 -10 times. 3Bent-Leg Raises: Sitting in a chair, straighten one leg in the air (without locking the knee). Hold for about one minute. Bend your knee to lower the leg about halfway to the floor. Hold for 30 seconds. Return to starting position. Work up to 4 reps on each leg. 4Straight-Leg Raises: Sitting in a chair, rest your foot on another chair. Lift the foot a few inches off the chair while keeping your leg straight. Hold for 5 -10 seconds. Return to resting position. Repeat 5 -10 times. (Also work on increasing the time, up to 2-3 minutes if possible.) 5Knee flex ion: Sitting in a chair, loop a long towel under your foot (resting on the floor). Gently pull on the towel with both hands to bend the knee, raising your foot 4 - 5 inches off the floor. Hold for 5 - 10 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times on each leg. 6 Lying Double Leg Curl: Lie on your stomach with both hands under your head for comfort. Contracting the hamstrings muscles, curl both legs toward your buttocks stopping when your knees are at a 90-degree angle. Inhale and slowly return to the starting position. Ankle weights may be worn to increase intensity. Do 1-3 sets with 12-15 repetitions each. Remember to rest in between sets. To keep your knees healthy, follow these tips Dos for Healthy Knees: Always see a doctor if you experience knee pain that is not relieved by several days of rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Back off from activities such as walking hills or knee-bending exercises that cause you pain. Strengthen the muscles around your knee. Strengthening the muscles around the joint protects you from injury by decreasing stress on the knee. Warm up before workout as cold muscles are prone to injuries. Also cooling down with stretching is as important as warming up. Like cold muscles, tight muscles are also likely to be injury prone. However, it is important not to over-stretch. When doing squats, lunges, or leg presses, avoid locking knees completely. Use low weight and high repetitions. Maintain a healthy weight. Get regular exercise. Exercise is good for your knees. Regular exercise is necessary for maintaining knee health Wear shoes appropriate for an activity. Seek proper arch support if your feet roll in. Don'ts for healthy knees: Don't ignore or exercise through pain. Be good to your knees and cut back on extreme sports as you age Never overdo unfamiliar activities. While walking, don't exaggerate your stride, overarch the back, or lock knees as you extend. Don't overextend knees, especially while pregnant, when hormonal changes allow for greater fluidity of movement. Don't give up on exercise completely because of pain without checking with your doctor about alternatives. Don't forget that overall stability, torso strength, and proper posture are key to knee health. (Kalra is a Chandigarh based fitness expert) |

The fresh face is making waves in Bollywood and the red carpet. She shares some summer care and fitness tips. 1. Will Salman get lucky this Eid?
Salman Khan’s much-anticipated film Ek Tha Tiger will be releasing on August 15, 2012.
Director Kabir Khan confirmed the date and said, “Ek Tha Tiger will be releasing on Wednesday, the 15th of August. We will have a 5 day weekend.” Interestingly, the film is releasing the same week in which Eid falls. Salman’s previous films like Wanted, Dabangg and Bodyguard which released on Eid proved to be a blockbuster. Also, the film boasts of just the right package with Katrina Kaif as Salman’s co-star, Kabir as director and Yash Raj Films as its producer. And with trade analysts tagging the film as the biggest release of the year and Eid being a lucky charm for Salman, we wonder if the film will break his previous box-office records.

Jack of all trades, master of one
Ali Zafar is the prince of Pakistani pop. His songs such as Rangeen, Chano, Masty, and Chal Dil Merey have enjoyed popularity in India as well. He rose to prominence with his acting debut in the runaway hit, Tere Bin Laden and has had hits like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and London Paris New York. Here he talks about music, movies, and painting.
The Indian pop music scene I wish there was more space for Indi-pop because the Indian music scene is dominated by Bollywood and film music. I wish that new artistes get a bigger platform. Pop music is an industry. If you look at other countries, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Britney Spears share the same platform and enjoy the same amount of, if not greater, success and fame as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. There should be a balance between pop stars and movie stars. Music and movies I cannot leave music because it is a part of me. My fans do not want me to, either. I am a musician and singer first. I write, create, compose, arrange, record, and even mix my music so I am very attached to music and it is part of my identity. Movies will come and go because movies are written by other people and I am only enacting a character. It is not me. Music is a wahid source that I can connect with. Art and craft Painting is another medium I like to express myself through. I graduated as a painter from the National College of Arts in Lahore. It relaxes me.

Don’t worry, be happy!
Actress Penelope Cruz has started to worry less since becoming a mother to her and Javier Bardem's 17-month-old son Leonardo. The To Rome With Love star, who always loves to worry about everything in her life, said since giving birth to her only child she is not concerned about meaningless aspects of her life that used to bother her before parenthood, reported a website.
"For me, having my son means I worry less. I've always loved to worry - ever since I was a little girl people would tell me I worry too much. But these days I really have to pick my subjects to worry about because there are only so many hours in the day. You have less ego because you are not number one any more. The things you used to believe were important - such as what people think of you, whether they like you - you realise they are not so important, not really," she said. The 38-year-old brunette beauty said she constantly feels tired due to the demands that come with having a baby. "Now, if you ask me if I am rested, I will say no, because I am not - I am tired all the time. But happy? Absolutely. I feel very calm, very focused, very much in a good place." —PTI

The year ahead
If your birthday is June 27...
Makeovers can be attention grabbing; a change of image could help you present yourself in a dignified manner. Something that catches your eye in the shops or on the Internet could have you longing to change your style in some way. Whether you want to toughen your image or are just dreaming about doing something, start taking those first steps towards achieving the look you're after. Your birth on the 27th June adds a tone of selflessness and humanitarianism. This birthday helps you to be broadminded, tolerant, generous and very cooperative. You use persuasion rather than force to achieve your ends. Ruled by Mars, nine is the teacher, is tolerant, somewhat impractical when triggered, emotions can be volcanic, and a seemingly meek personality can resort to bullying tactics when unhappy. Once again you're in an idealistic mood, and you want to have as little to do with reality as possible. You may not see it like that because it's likely that you believe everything you think. A dreamy mood will come up with some wonderfully imaginative, even inspirational ideas. Adventurous colours are silver and sage green. There can be some twists and turns in your personal life today. Expenses may increase and this may impact your financial progress. You need to be optimistic for the day and make adjustments as required. Health will show moderate status. Some challenging situations at work might be possible. Saturn will put you to the test, be shrewd and precise, don't rush into things and stay calm at all times. You can expect good results at work. There are chances for a trip abroad. You may spend money; however, income is also possible with proper planning. Physically and physiologically, you will be subject to ups and downs. Try to regenerate yourself and believe in yourself as this is the only way to be successful. Someone close to you will give you good advice about your relationship; try to follow this advice and the days will go more smoothly. Mood: Emotional and given to 'short fuse' from time to time. Compatible signs: Virgo, Libra. Lucky colours: Grey, White. Lucky days: Monday and Thursday. Lucky numbers: 2, 4, 16, 45, 90. Lucky gem: Aquamarine - Gemstone of love. Lucky flower: Satin-Flower.
Tanay Hemant Chheda (June 27, 1996, Mumbai) worked in Slumdog Millionaire (2008), for which he won the Screen Actors Guild Award. He was first seen in the movie Don. In Taare Zameen Par, he played Rajan Damodaran, a child with special needs who is an extremely helpful and supportive friend to the protagonist Ishaan (played by Darsheel Safary). He portrayed young Rizwan Khan in the Shahrukh Khan film, My Name Is Khan. Tanay’s career might not do well in coming years. His path will remain full of struggle because of Rahu’s dasha in his charts.
