Road widening begins

Fatehgarh Sahib, June 26
To ensure a smooth flow of traffic in the district, various link roads are being widened and strengthened in at the cost of Rs 24 crore, said Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, general secretary, SAD(B), and incharge for Fatehgarh Sahib constituency, while talking to media persons. He was inaugurating the project of widening the link road at Sirhind today.

The one km stretch of the road, which connects the Chandigarh- Patiala bypass Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at Sirhind with Madhopur bypass railway crossing, will be widened at the cost of Rs 68 lakh. It had been a long-pending demand of the residents of the area. It would benefit the Patiala Chandigarh commuters, who had to wait for long at the Madhopur Railway crossing.

He said that similarly the Ludhiana Chandigarh traffic was increasing and the work to strengthen the Fatehgarh Sahib-Gobindgarh road via Jandali has started. The road would be widened and strengthened at the cost of Rs 5 Crore. He said that the 18.05 km stretch of old Sher Shah Suri Marg, passing from Sarai Banjara via Chandumajra, linking various rural areas, is being widened and strengthened at the cost of Rs 13 Crore. The work would start soon.

Answering a query, he said that the historically important Aam Khas Bagh at Sirhind would be developed as tourist place. Highlighting the various achievements of the state government, he said that the major achievement is implementation of Right to Service Act by which various types of government office-related works would be done in stipulated time. This would also help in curbing corruption. He said that the previous government did not fulfil even a single vacancy and the Chief Minister now has decided to fill all the vacant posts to improve the functioning of government departments.

Man thrashed, robbed of purse

Chandigarh, June 26
A man was robbed of his purse at the Sector 10/16 dividing road last night. Jeet Singh, a resident of Sector 8-A, Chandigarh, alleged that two persons on a Pulsar sped away after beating him up and robbing his purse containing cash Rs 380, a voter card and one mobile phone.

Jeet works in the PGI canteen and was returning home when the incident occurred.

A case of robbery has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

U-22 cricket tourney
Amritsar-city tie evenly poised

Chasing the first-innings total of 200 runs posted by Chandigarh team during the ongoing inter-district cricket championship for boys (U-22), the Amritsar team found themselves struggling at 163 for 8 off 68 overs at the close of day's play at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here today.

Rohan Marwaha (57) topped Amritsar's score chart with his half century. For the city team, Gurinder Singh was the most successful bowler with three for 53. Aman Bharti and Abhilash Sharma claimed two scalps each.

Earlier, Chandigarh after resuming from 155 for 4 was bundled out for 200 runs by the Amritsar bowlers. Veer Karan Goyal (84) top-scored while Gurinder Singh added 58 runs to the team's total. Sunny and Abhinav Sharma grabbed three wickets each for Amritsar.

In the second match, a brilliant ton by Patiala's Himanshu Chawla enabled the team to take an 11-run lead over Mohali. Himanshu hammered 155 off 216, studded with 22 boundaries, and remained unbeaten.

His 107-run partnership with Vicky Sharma for the fifth wicket was pivotal in taking the team total to 295 runs after Mohali had scored 284 runs in their first innings. Sharma later added 77 runs with Bhavish Goel (44). For Mohali, Harpreet Chatha claimed four for 84, and Arshdeep Brar took three for 69.

The Mohali team lost an early wicket in their second innings. Later, Harpreet Mander (41) and Arshdeep Brar (45) steadied the innings and remained unbeaten to take the team total to 87 for 1 at the end of day's play.

In the third match of the tournament, at Burlton Park, Jalandhar, the home team closed the day's play with a total of 336 for 8 in 107 overs, chasing Jalandhar's first-innings score of 389 runs.

An unbeaten 105-run partnership between Ravinder (61) and Sandeep Singh (41) helped the team to close in on the visiting side's total. For Jalandhar, Yogesh Sharma completed a 5-wicket haul, giving away 95 runs.

Dilpreet shines in BECC win

Riding high on a fine all-round performance by Dilpreet Singh (five for 17 and 24 not out), Black Elephant Cricket Club defeated Achievers Club by four wickets in a close finish in a league match of the first Patiala Hot Weather T-20 Open Cricket Tournament.

Winning the toss, Achievers Club decided to bat first. The team managed 133 for 8 in the allotted overs. Skipper Aman Kumar (33) and Kanwar (55) were the main scorers for the club. Dilpreet's five-wicket haul for Black Elephant club did not allow the lower-order batsmen to pile runs in the closing overs.

In reply, Black Elephant Cricket Club started their innings with caution and added 27 runs for the first wicket in six overs. In the final over, the batting side needed 14 runs to win the match against the bowling of former Punjab player Gautam Mandora. Dilpreet once again came good for his side and hit two boundaries off the first two deliveries and a huge six off third ball to achieve the target with three balls to spare.

Bharti Vij Cricket Academy, Sector 28, overcame the host team, Satluj Cricket Academy, in a match under boys (U-13) category in the ongoing First Satluj Summer Cup League Cricket Tournament here today.

Batting first, the host team scored 161 runs in the allotted 25 overs. Abhishek Bahmani scored 64 runs, and Aman Kumar contributed with 38 runs. Gaurav and Ankur took two wickets each for the visiting side.

In reply, the Bharti Vij Cricket Academy reached the target in the penultimate over, recording a three-wicket victory. Sahil, with 40 runs, and Shivan, with 38, topped the scoring chart. Abhishek Bahmani was the most successful bowler for the host team with the figures of four for 26.

AG Punjab make clean sweep in table tennis final

The team of AG Punjab posted a 3-0 win over the team of AG Uttar Pradesh (Allahabad) to win the team title of the North Zone Table Tennis Tournament at the Table Tennis hall, Sector 23, today.

In the first match, Rahul Malhotra of AG Punjab defeated Amit Shrivastava of AG UP 3-0. In another one-sided match, Sunil Ahuja of AG Punjab defeated Gaurav Khanna of AG UP 3-0. Vikash Sharma of AG Punjab put the final nail in the coffin for AG UP by defeating SP Singh 3-2 in a closely-contested match. The wining team was awarded the running trophy and mementoes.

Ishan races to win in U-8 freestyle

Swimmers Ishan Sharma, Rayaan Grewal, and Anhat Singh bagged the top-three positions in the 25-mts freestyle event for boys (U-8) during the swimming championship at All-Weather Swimming Pool, Sector 23, today.

Ishan completed the patch in 0.24.53 seconds to finish first while Rayaan Grewal took 0.24.86 seconds to attain the second place. Anhat Singh took 0.27.06 seconds to finish third in the event held as a part of the Sub-junior and Junior (Boys and Girls) Swimming Championship.

Saupin's outdo Sec-32 Coaching Centre in U-14 cricket

The cricket team of Saupin's School, Sector 32, recorded a 45-run win over Coaching Centre, Sector 32, in the ongoing 1st junior cricket championship for boys (U-14) here today.

Batting first, the Saupin's School team posted a total of 138 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Prabhjeet scored a quick knock of 46 runs off 32 balls. Manav (30 off 47) and Satyam (16 off 8) also contributed with the bat. For the bowling side, Shivang and Shivansh took a wicket each. In reply, Shivang came good with the bat too, scoring 29 runs in a losing cause. The Coaching Centre team got out for a total of 93 runs. For Saupin's, Manan was the pick of the bowlers for his spell of 3 for 28. Sonu and Varun supported him with two wickets each.

Talent hunt for young footballers

Bharti Airtel will kick off 'Airtel Rising Stars', India's biggest under-16 soccer talent hunt programme, in collaboration with the Manchester United Football Academy in 16 cities, including Chandigarh, across the nation.

During the talent hunt campaign, a total of 12 footballers will get the chance to attend a week-long training camp at the Manchester United academy in Old Trafford, England. The 3-month long talent hunt will be conducted in 16 cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Calicut, Chandigarh and Jaipur.

The organisers said that the players will be tested on various parameters, including physical attributes, individual skills and performance, before travelling to England.
