Panchkula sans playgrounds
Sanjay Bumbroo
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, June 23
Streets here have turned into playgrounds. In the absence of playgrounds in the town, children are forced to play on streets. There are some parks, but these have cemented pathways.

Every sector in the town has nine to 10 parks and the area of each park varies from 0.15 acres to 0.38 acres.

These parks are maintained by the residents welfare associations. Fearing damage to ornamental plants, the association members do not allow children to play in these parks.

"Parks are developed so that everyone benefits from these, but as these are small and have cemented pathways, children are not able to play outdoor games there," said Soniya Sharma, a Sector 9 resident and mother of two.

As children play on streets, minor accidents have become a routine occurrence. "The elderly discourage children from playing in parks. Even the school authorities do not let them play in playgrounds after school hours," said BB Singal, senior BJP leader, and former vice-president of the erstwhile municipal council.

Singal suggested that children should be allowed to play in community centres as these centre were booked for social functions for just 30 days in a year.

He added that children should be allowed to play in school playgrounds in the evening.

He said recently children had also met Deputy Commissioner Ashima Brar and apprised her of the problem being faced by them. They told her in Sector 10, they could not play games like football and cricket. He said the DC had assured them of doing the needful.

Construction of 3,000 flats
GMADA to float tenders soon
Tribune News Service

Mohali, June 23
While the successful candidates under GMADA's Purab Apartment Scheme in Sector 88 continue to withdraw their claim, the authority is all set to float tenders for the construction of 3,000 flats in the first phase.

"We will select a project management consultant (PMC) following which the process of constructing 3,000 flats will start immediately," said a senior official of GMADA here.

Under the scheme, GMADA has selected 4,500 applicants through a draw of lots. Sources said about 2,000 successful candidates had already opted to withdraw from the scheme. "We receive five to 10 applications everyday," said an official of the department.

When there are only 2,500 successful candidates left, why the authorities are planning to construct about 500 extra flats in the first phase, said the official.

On the other hand, GMADA officials said only speculators were opting for withdrawal, as the condition of five-year lock in any transaction was not going down well with them. The apex court's ruling regarding putting a ban on the sale of property on GPA had also caused some dent. "Otherwise the scheme is not only consumer-friendly, but also very unique," said an official of GMADA.

Notably, under the scheme, one BHK apartment (900 in number) will cost Rs 37 lakh whereas for BHK apartments and three BHK flats will cost Rs 55 lakh and Rs 69 lakh, respectively.
