2 Nigerians held for fraud
Kharar, June 23 "The complainant was told that one of his children, who had participated in an online contest on the Internet, had won a prize. One of the miscreants reached Himmat's place with bundles of Indian currency notes. The family was told that the notes had security check stamps that could be removed only with a chemical. They then asked Himmat for Rs 4.10 lakh to get the chemical. This way the miscreants managed to take about Rs 97 lakh from the family in three instalments," said Yogi Raj. On Himmat's complaint, the police apprehended the due. The police has registered a case under Sections 420 and 406, IPC. The two were produced in a local court today which sent them to a two-day police remand. |

Fatehgarh Sahib, June 23 He said a campaign had been launched by the district police against anti-social elements, criminals, drug sellers and eve-teasers and it has started yielding results as police had succeeded in nabbing hundreds of criminals and gangs. It had also seized intoxicants and liquor. The SSP said with the setting up of the complex, the police personnel would get better facilities and it would improve their working. He said the complex had all modern facilities. He thanked the village panchyat for giving 25 acres. He said all SHOs had been directed to work in a transparent manner and to change the image of the police. The police personnel pledged to curb the crime. |

20-year-old girl commits suicide
Pinjore, June 23 The incident came to light when her mother, who had gone to the PGI in Chandigarh, returned home. She found her daughter hanging from a ceiling fan at a room on the first floor of the house. The police said no suicide note was found. Pinjore: A body of a man was found in the forest area near Marrawala village here this morning. On seeing the body, passersby informed the police about it. Residents of the area said the man was mentally challenged. The police has sent the body to the Civil Hospital for an autopsy. |

Gold jewellery worth about Rs 6 lakh stolen
Chandigarh, June 23 Pragati and her child and in-laws left for Uttarakhand on June 11 to meet her husband Umedh Mathur, who was with the department of technical education. The theft was noticed by her neighbours yesterday when found the locks broken. The police saidthieves might have had information of the house being locked for the last few days, following which they targeted the house. Forensic experts and fingerprint experts, along with a dog squad, visited the house and collected information. A case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC was registered at the Mani Majra police station. |

Car damaged by miscreants
Chandigarh, June 23 The car belonged to JS Syju and was parked outside his residence at Sector 46 here. The miscreants reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and had their faces covered. The miscreants, armed with rods, broke the
windscreen, backlight and windowpanes before fleeing the spot. A professional grudge was stated to be the
reason behind the attack. Syju was heading the vigilance division for the last three years and was instrumental in booking culprits within the FCI for irregularities. An eyewitness told the police that shortly after the incident, they saw another car being driven towards Syju’s residence, but they retreated on
seeing the crowd and a police vehicle. A complaint was lodged and an inquiry initiated. |

One held for bomb hoax
Chandigarh, June 23 The accused spread panic at the ISBT by claiming that he had a bomb in his bag. He was identified as Manoj Sharma of Sundernagar in Himachal Pradesh. According to the police, he was an advocate by profession and was working with a private firm at Mohali. The police said people made a phone call to the police, following which the anti-bomb squad was rushed to the ISBT and the accused arrested. A case under Sections 506 and 507 of the IPC was
registered against the accused. The case was under investigation. |

Panchkula sans playgrounds
Panchkula, June 23 Every sector in the town has nine to 10 parks and the area of each park varies from 0.15 acres to 0.38 acres. These parks are maintained by the residents welfare associations. Fearing damage to ornamental plants, the association members do not allow children to play in these parks. "Parks are developed so that everyone benefits from these, but as these are small and have cemented pathways, children are not able to play outdoor games there," said Soniya Sharma, a Sector 9 resident and mother of two. As children play on streets, minor accidents have become a routine occurrence. "The elderly discourage children from playing in parks. Even the school authorities do not let them play in playgrounds after school hours," said BB Singal, senior BJP leader, and former vice-president of the erstwhile municipal council. Singal suggested that children should be allowed to play in community centres as these centre were booked for social functions for just 30 days in a year. He added that children should be allowed to play in school playgrounds in the evening. He said recently children had also met Deputy Commissioner Ashima Brar and apprised her of the problem being faced by them. They told her in Sector 10, they could not play games like football and cricket. He said the DC had assured them of doing the needful. |
GMADA to float tenders soon

Mohali, June 23 "We will select a project management consultant (PMC) following which the process of constructing 3,000 flats will start immediately," said a senior official of GMADA here. Under the scheme, GMADA has selected 4,500 applicants through a draw of lots. Sources said about 2,000 successful candidates had already opted to withdraw from the scheme. "We receive five to 10 applications everyday," said an official of the department. When there are only 2,500 successful candidates left, why the authorities are planning to construct about 500 extra flats in the first phase, said the official. On the other hand, GMADA officials said only speculators were opting for withdrawal, as the condition of five-year lock in any transaction was not going down well with them. The apex court's ruling regarding putting a ban on the sale of property on GPA had also caused some dent. "Otherwise the scheme is not only consumer-friendly, but also very unique," said an official of GMADA. Notably, under the scheme, one BHK apartment (900 in number) will cost Rs 37 lakh whereas for BHK apartments and three BHK flats will cost Rs 55 lakh and Rs 69 lakh, respectively. |
