SDO held for taking bribe

Ambala, June 21
The State Vigilance Bureau, Ambala, has nabbed an SDO of the electricity department on the charge of taking bribe from a farmer.

Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Niharsi village, had filed a complaint with the Vigilance Bureau that the SDO, Geetu Ram, had been demanding Rs 8,000 from him for supplying power to his tubewell.

When Gurmeet was handing over the amount to the SDO, the vigilance team nabbed him red-handed.

A case under Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against the SDO.

Snatchings, vehicle thefts reported in city

Chandigarh, June 21
Two incidents of snatchings and vehicle thefts were registered today.
Nitu Negi, a resident, alleged that the occupant of a motorcycle sped away after snatching her purse containing Rs 4,000, an ATM card, PAN card and a cheque book, while she was coming from Sector 15.

Amarjit Kaur, a resident of Sector-32, Chandigarh, alleged that two occupants of a motorcycle sped away after snatching her mobile phone near the GMCH-32.

Ram Sewak, a resident of Sector 27-D, reported that his Maruti car number CH-01V-9141 was stolen while it was parked in front of his house.

Harpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 44, reported that his Toyota Innova number PB-09G-0909 was stolen from in front of his house.

One arrested for violence in PU

Chandigarh, June 21
A clash took place between supporters of PUSU and SOPU near the law auditorium at Panjab University in evening today. The police arrested a student Rishabh, a PUSU supporter, under the case of causing hurt and criminal intimidation while three of his accomplices are absconding. A case has been registered in Sector 11 police station.

The accused had come to the university for entrance test when he and his accomplices attacked Ranjodh, a SOPU supporter, arond 5 pm. Ranjodh got minor bruises in the incident and the police was called. His medical examination was conducted at the Government Multi Specialty Hospitality in Sector 16.

Police could arrest only one accused while the rest managed to flee.

Swimming meet from June 26

The UT sports department will organise a swimming meet at All- Weather Swimming Pool (yoga centre), Sector 23, from June 26 to 28, here. The competition will be held in sub-junior and junior categories. Position holders will be given cash prizes.

Fee will be charged from participants.

Interested swimmers can submit their entries along with age proof certificate to Jasjit Kaur, swimming coach at All-Weather Swimming Pool, Sector 23, on or before June 25(5 pm).

Millennium academy record win

Chandigarh, June 21
Millennium Cricket Academy, Mohali, defeated Bharti Cricket Academy during the Junior Cricket Cup for Boys (U-14) held at DAV College, Sector 10, here today.
The winning side scored 122 runs. Bowler Abhishek guided the team to victory after taking 4 for 9, including a hat-trick. Batting first, the MCA scored 153 runs after losing six wickets.

Shorya (32) and Jundid (22) helped the team achieve the total. In reply, the losing side were bundled out on a meagre total of 31 runs. — TNS

Cricket meet: City team bask in Jaskaranvir’s glory

After scoring a double ton in the Punjab State Inter-District One-Day Limited Over Matches, batsman and skipper of Chandigarh team, Jaskaranvir Singh, continues to spread his charisma after scoring 201 runs in the ongoing Dhruv Pandove Cricket Trophy (U-19) being played at the LIC Cricket Academy, Sector 26, here today.

Jaskaranvir hammered his second double ton against Mohali today. He helped the team score a total of 420 for 6 in 79.1 overs before declaring their innings against Mohali. He was equally supported by his batting partner Shivam Bhambri, who scored 60 runs and Simranpreet Singh (82 runs).

Earlier, the duo notched up 173 runs for the opening stand in 30.5 overs. Shivam (60 off 106 studded with 13 boundaries) was the first to go after being caught by Maninder off Sidhu. Then Simranpreet Singh added 82 runs, including 14 boundaries, and he along with Jaskaranvir took the team’s total to 299 runs. In the meanwhile, Jaskaranvir Singh completed his double ton off 138 balls (strike rate of 145.65). He hit 16 boundaries and 12 sixes.

Arpit Singh Pannu was the other principal scorer after contributing 47 off 81 with 6 boundaries and a six. For the bowling side, Amish Sidhu and Maninder Singh claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Mohali scored 39 for 1 in 13 overs till the end of day’s play, with skipper Maninder Singh scoring unbeaten 29 runs.

In the second match played at Dhruv Pandove Stadium, Patiala, Ludhiana failed to get a good start while chasing down Patiala’s score of 304 runs. Batting first, the home team scored 304 for 8 in 77 overs.

Their innings was studded by an unbeaten century by Sagar Kumar 111off 211. He was equally supported by Vicky Sharma (64) and Anmolpreet (37). For Ludhiana, Navendu Sharma was the pick of the bowlers after taking 4 for 98.

In reply, Ludhiana lost their first three wickets on a mere total of 39 runs in 20 overs at the close of days’ play. Bowler, Sukhminder claimed 2 for 4.

In the third match between Jalandhar and Amritsar at Burlton Park, Jalandhar, Amritsar amassed 377 runs in 95 overs.
