Man on a mission to popularise taekwondo
Patiala, June 17 Satwinder Singh has also worked for a state government project that aimed to provide basic martial arts training to girl students to enable them to defend themselves at the time of need. Born in Patiala in 1981, Satwinder came in touch with taekwondo at a young age of eight when he started training under Pawan Sharma. His passion for the sport soon took him to taekwondo coach SP Shukla in Bathinda. Considering Satwinder’s interest, his parents allowed him to travel to Bathinda for his training. He went on to receive the TFI Black Belt I Dan in taekwondo (World Taekwondo Federation, Kukkiwon). After the completion of his formal training, Satwinder took upon himself to popularise the sport. He started training school students and performing the martial art at various places. His students brought him laurels by excelling in various competitions. Satwinder’s biggest achievement remains the training of many differently-abled children who have overcome their impairment to win against students with no such challenge. Satwinder says that he stumbled upon the idea of training these children on seeing a few hearing and speech impaired kids selling self-made candles. “I was delighted to see their talent and suddenly a thought crossed my mind that I should channelise their talent for their betterment,”he says. Satwinder got in touch with the Patiala School of Deaf and Dumb in 2003 and since then has been training these students. “Initially I faced a lot of difficulty in communicating with these kids but with time the differences faded,”says Satwinder. These children not only display their skills during Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations, but many of them have also won medals during various district and state-level tournaments. |
