MC polls
Patiala, June 11 The defeat of the Patiala BJP president Arun Gupta, who was in the election fray from municipal ward number 19, has given a big jolt to the party. Gupta lost to Suraj Bhaan of Congress. Notably, marred by the factionalism within the party, the base of BJP has been constantly shrinking in Patiala. Sources within the party have stated that by ignoring the grass root level workers and crucial organisational issues are the main reasons behind the party’s poor performance in the civic polls. It is also pertinent to mention that in the past two years, two BJP councillors - Navneet Kaur (ward number 25) and Sarita Gera (ward number 7) had resigned, accusing rampant corruption in Patiala MC and the humiliating treatment being meted out to them by the BJP leaders, including the Senior Deputy Mayor Anil Bajaj, as the reasons behind the decision. The gravity of the problem could well be gauged from the fact that Sonia Devi of BJP, who was Deputy Mayor, had resigned from the primary membership of the party. It is on record that when Sonia resigned, she had submitted in writing that Anil Bajaj was not only acting in a "dictatorial" manner but was deliberately creating hurdles in the developmental works to be undertaken in ward number 34 represented by her. “The defeat of the party’s present district president Arun Gupta is shameful and the number of the seats going down by two is certainly a matter of concern,” said many BJP activists. While it was already clear during the Assembly elections that there is dissidence within the party, no concrete steps were taken to set the house in order. “It is time for the party leadership to do some introspection to ascertain the reasons behind the party’s dismal performance as compared to the 2007 civic polls,” said a senior BJP leader. |
Mahindra & Mahindra told to pay Rs 60,000 as compensation
Mohali, June 11 The forum held that the company sold a vehicle to the complainant with a faulty engine, which not only led to mental and physical harassment of the complainant but also loss of income. The complainant Harbans Singh alleged that he had purchased a commercial vehicle, Mahindra GIO LC, from the company’s authorised dealer Goel Motors located at Phase VI, Mohali, after paying Rs 5,22,000. He had taken a loan of Rs 4,44,000 to buy the vehicle. ”The vehicle had some snag in its engine and was consuming excess engine oil,” alleged Harbans Singh adding that despite getting service from the service station of Goel Motors, the vehicle failed to work properly. Finally the dealer informed Harbans that the engine required to be replaced. Harbans left the vehicle with Goel Motors in January this year as the dealer had failed to deliver the vehicle to Harbans despite his repeated visits. Harbans had served a legal notice in Fabruary 2012 following which he was told to pick his repaired vehicle within two days. The complainant also furnished an affidavit that he had suffered a loss of Rs 45,000 (Rs 1,500 daily) due to undue delay in repairing of the vehicle by the company. After hearing both the parties, the forum held that Mahindra and Mahindra company was guilty of deficiency in service. The forum ordered it to pay Rs 45,000 for causing loss to the complainant, Rs 10,000 as compensation for harassment and Rs 5,000 as litigation costs. |

Hockey stadiums in city lack infrastructure
Chandigarh, June 11 In the era of high-tech stadiums, when hockey is being played on new astroturf of a uniform colour (light blue with pink border) as per the recommendations issued by the International Hockey Federation, the local hockey players are still struggling on grass ground at the hockey stadium of Sector 18. Notably, as per records only 11 players have enrolled themselves for undergoing practice session at the stadium. The stadium was constructed in 1960 and many tournaments, including All India Gurmeet Memorial Hockey tourney, National Women Hockey (1989), All India Invitation Hockey Tournament, matches of Canadian and England clubs, have been held here. But the stadium is yet to receive any of the modern facilities, including new Astroturf and proper sitting arrangement. "Every sportsperson wants to be in the cream of the nation for which he or she needs to have all modern facilities to hone their skills. No one likes to play on the grass grounds these days. However, many junior level tournaments are organised here but only a few students opt to undergo practice at that hockey stadium," said an official. A player added, "The ball fumbles a lot on grass. Moreover, standard tournaments are organised on turf only. Being the oldest stadium of the city, it should have all the facilities," said a player. On other hand, even the hockey stadium of Sector 42 does not have the new type of astroturf. The project to lay down the new turf at the hockey stadium of Sports Complex is on papers from March 2011. The officials have been working on the specifications from past one year and are yet finalise the review of e-tendering and the demand notice inviting tender (DNIT). According to sources, the hockey stadium of Sector 18, will get a synthetic layer of six-a-side size only when the Sector 42 stadium gets the new turf. "For a junior player, the grass ground is a learning platform. There is a need to upgrade the stadium and the department is working in that direction," said JPS Sidhu, joint director sports. "Due to an unwanted delay, the project of new turf at the main stadium is pending. We have gone through a long process and hopefully will buy the turf in two months. Hopefully, the local residents will witness the World Series Hockey (WSH) matches on the new astroturf field," said Sidhu. |
