Script of the century
How do you sum up hundred years of the Indian cinema? Good…because it rakes up 100 crores out of a no-storyline-film! Bad…because it copies films from Hollywood and still terms it as pure inspiration! Good…because parallel cinema has been able to blend with the mainstream! Bad… because it hasn’t experimented enough! Is it important to undertake a retrospective journey? Present is always more important than the past. Future is even more valuable; film-makers share their aspirations about how they want Bollywood to be in the times to come.
The concerns range from the regressive content of cinema to what the technicians, earn. “The change has to be holistic. Bollywood has set high benchmarks and from there, it has to ensure a better performance,” says Onir, director of national award-winning film I AM. He hopes that Bollywood has the courage to take risks and make more responsible films without bothering about the box-office collections. “Emphasis should be laid on making meaningful, sensible cinema rather than on marketing and promotions. What we make has its effect on people, it’s important to send the right message to audience.” Ironically, the worst of movies give huge returns; big stars guarantee a big ticket success, script doesn’t matter. If at times it matters, an item number becomes bigger than the film! “In between all this, technicians still don’t get paid decent enough,” says Luv Ranjan, director of Pyaar Ka Punchnama. In that case, make-up artists take home more salary. Luv adds, “A director of photography can make a heroine with a bad make-up look glamourous on-screen. And if it is the other way round, make-up artist’s efforts won’t make a difference.” He also feels that film-makers should stop following trends, “Because when that happens, we stop thinking and creativity goes for a toss.” Finances are not that big an issue in Bollywood. Support flows in from production houses and corporate sector. “In terms of finances and experimental content, we are almost at par with Hollywood. Only certain methods need to be changed,” says Shoojit Sircar, who recently delivered the hit Vicky Donor. By this, he means that like in Hollywood, a script should precede the budget of the film and not vice-a-versa. There are examples of Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani and of course his big film Vicky Donor, wherein the script was more in focus than the budget. “The infrastructure for films should become better as well; technicians should be professionally trained.” Only then will we have films that aren’t solely dependent on marketing strategies; films that actually have a storyline! ashima@tribunemail.com
Celeb Take Old melody
I am not asking for the music and lyrics of 60’s as well as 70’s, but I miss those evergreen numbers. There isn’t any concept of evergreen music or lyrics now. What is a hit today will be forgotten tomorrow. I wish we could have music that’s actually music to the ear. Also, I think we should have awards not just for the film-making core team, but also for the people who assist. Why not appreciate efforts of the technicians?
Act right The whole industry is tired of dealing with piracy. We definitely need stringent laws to handle the problem. As for actors, I think those who act
well should be given more importance than who just look well. That’s the premise of casting actors in Hollywood and I wish it can be replicated in Bollywood as well. Wish fair skin wasn’t the parameter of being a
great actor!
Lyrical thought Songs are an integral part of Hindi cinema, so why not pay more attention to the music part of the films; why not have lyrics that are real, something that people can relate to? In times when people appreciate experimental, real cinema, they also want lyrics that make sense in the present context.
Though Bollywood has been able to understand the same to a larger extent, there is still a lot of scope for improvement.
Celebration time
Hundred years of Bollywood was a special occasion for members of the Aspiration Ladies Club. They dressed up as their favourite actors, respectively. Says Neepa Sharma, co-founder of the club, “Bollywood is a part of our lives. Why not be a part of its 100 years of celebration?” |

Truth, layer by layer
A teaser for a title, a story that is as much his as of millions of families in India….. Jerry Pinto's debut novel Em and the Big Hoom is striking the right chord and garnering rave reviews.
That the courage to pen a novel, largely autobiographical, about a lead protagonist suffering from mental illness, doesn't come easily to most of us, however, is a different matter. And Pinto in Chandigarh at the invitation of Cafia Utsav Literature & Art Trust shares that he got the inspiration to tell this story from none other than his mother who had the gall to share her predicament and to admit openly to others that she had a nervous breakdown. Ever since the book came out in the first week of May, not a single day has passed when he didn't receive an e-mail or a telephone call from readers not merely empathising with his characters but also identifying with them. Smiles Pinto, "All of us may delude ourselves that we have a perfect family but the truth is often otherwise." Yes, the book is about a dysfunctional Indian family, yes it is a love story of not just two but four people but to say that it's an out and out autobiography admits Pinto would be wrong. He elucidates, "Come to think of it, all of what we write is in a way autobiographical. The words that we choose, the subjects that we write reveal a lot about ourselves." So his books on sexy siren Helen and beautiful actor Leela Naidu were no accidents but an offshoot of his fascination for Hindi cinema as well as for them as individuals. For someone who grew watching a Hindi film every week, his take on Helen whom he calls the 'cinematic phenomenon' is as interesting as insightful. He quips, "In a world where even heroines have a limited shelf-life here was a dancer whose career spawned three decades and she romanced three generation of Kapoors on screen. Yet the world did not notice it." Writing books on people whom he admires so much… can objectivity be maintained? And he answers, "See my book on Leela Naidu whom I met when I was all of 21 is not a biography. I was so fascinated by her graciousness and her beauty that when she asked me to collaborate with her I couldn't have said no. But at the end of the day, it's Naidu telling her story in first person." Overt sentimentality is something that Pinto anyway stays away from and hasn't let it creep into his otherwise highly moving novel either. As he puts it, "In a novel you must leave space for the reader to come in and experience it from his or her perspective." Besides, while he is all for emotions, he thinks sentimentality is no more than a "perverted and manipulated emotion." And just in case you are wondering what this writer of Surviving Women with no wife and children thinks of family, he says, "Family is a beautiful and warm institution so important to human survival, yet can be constrictive and restrictive as well." So rest assured, whenever Pinto will unpeel its many layers, he will not shy away from telling you a few home truths. But then his biggest concern as a writer is to be able to ensure that we all stand free to voice our opinions. And tell our stories as truthfully as possible.
Undivided attention
Jerry Pinto is a name that appears as an author on the title of 15 books. So what took him 20 long years to pen his first novel? And well-known writer, columnist and journalist Jerry Pinto whose debut novel Em and the Big Hoom is making waves in literary circles says, "Unlike other forms of writing a novel can only come when there are no other voices in your head. This means I had to quit my job as a journalist and just pay heed to the voices of my characters." As for the man who describes himself as a poet first he quips, "In a perfect world people would give you a lot of money for writing poetry but since this is an imperfect world, I have to write in various genres."

Fashion quotient
There was a time when Ludhiana was considered a second-tier city, but in terms of fashion and top brands it has always given the metros a run for their money. Designers and other people in the business of fashion have been coming to the city for exhibitions in a bid to gauge the potential of the market. Off late, the likes of Pernia Qureshi and Sana Rezwan visited the city, bypassing some of the metros!
Alka Nishar, owner of Aza, multi-designer brand store in Mumbai and Delhi, on such a visit recently found the city a right platform. "Ludhiana is emerging as a strong market for high-end luxury goods. I got a very good response during my visit; people here are very aware of the products and prices," she said. Designer Neeta Lulla also feels that Ludhianvis have always been fashion-conscious. "Ludhianvis are very receptive to fashion trends. They travel to Delhi as well as Mumbai for the latest collections and fashion trends," she says. Designer Rocky S, also associated with the store, said that the reason designers are associating with multi-designer stores is that these provide the right kind of variety to the customers. Moreover, entering a new market is more viable through a multi-designer store rather than going solo. Fashion awareness has grown by leaps and bounds in the recent past. Says designer Rocky S, "I have done a couple of shows in Ludhiana and found a lot of potential." At the launch of the store on Friday, Neeta Lulla will introduce a kalamkari line, while Rocky S a new collection of light sarees.

Fashion Funda
The whole fashion industry sits and takes notice when Sunil Sethi, director of FDCI, makes a forecast about a fashion designer. He recently praised Aneeth Arora and called her the most promising fashion designer of the year. The designer also didn’t disappoint, her autumn- winter collection at the WLIFW was applauded not just for the immaculate styling, but also for the way she handled her fabrics. Textile revival remains her strength. She shares some insights on fashion.
What’s in: Anything that’s anti-fit. Cotton and khaki will remain the most favourable fabrics. You can add one layer to your clothing this summer. Team up feminine shirts with a light masculine jacket. Nothing can get trendier than floral prints. Pair them
up with checks for that ultra-chic look. What’s out: If anti-fits are in, body hugging has to be out. People generally consider black as the safest bet for any occasion but please spare it in the summer. If you want to wear all the bright shades, make sure you don’t go overboard. Team up a bright top with soothing coloured trousers. Over dosage of colour is the biggest faux pas. Colour count: Whites teamed up with bright colours make for a great colour scheme. Neon colours are big this season. A canary yellow and an orange are a must-have in the wardrobe. Designer model: I look up to the veterans of the industry, Abraham and Thakore. Also, designs of Daniela Gregis, an Italian fashion designer, inspire me. Party couture: A short tunic in beige or any other pastel colour, paired well with a bright scarf, is enough to get noticed in a party. Next in line: The collection will comprise a lot of see-through outfits. I am working on the revival of a traditional embroidery technique. Checks will also dominate the collection. fashion industry: The market base is increasing as the designers are working very hard.

Doc talk
Sagging skin is an inevitable part of ageing and this is how the significance of face lifts arises. Sagging is caused due to the effect of gravity on the aged skin that is deprived of its stock of elastin and collagen that hold it tight. Also, the skin loses the moisture retaining capacity, thereby depriving the skin of its important natural protective mechanism.
Though ageing is a natural phenomenon and trying to stop it will have its own benefits and repercussions. In the coming years we are going to witness explosive developments in the anti-aging treatments. The modern generation and their desire to turn back the clock while maintaining an active life style has favoured the popularity of newer anti-ageing techniques. Surgery no more!
Face lifts were mainly performed surgically but the problems of invasiveness and large downtime have made the dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons to look for non-surgical face lifts requiring minimal downtime. Though not as effective as surgical ones, but for those with minimal and initial sagging or ageing skin, face lifts with mesotherapy is an interesting option. This technique is a unique combination of art and science, a medical specialty using painless microinjections of fillers, vitamins, herbs and skin enhancing pharmaceuticals in specific formulations. Mesotherapy can be applied to a multitude of different conditions, both medical and cosmetic. The main advantage is that there is no surgery and no “down-time”. You may return to your daily routine immediately. How to do
It involves a series of micro-injections with a unique pharmaceutic formulations injected into the mesoderm of the skin. Mesotherapy allows the true restructuring of the skin tissue since the formulation has been fully designed to favour the different biological reactions necessary for the maintenance of the skin. Mesotherapy is usually performed in an initial series of 2-4 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart. The effects of the treatment are cumulative. Your body will slowly develop collagen and elastin over time. The treatment is a bio revitalizing treatment. By injecting hyaluronic acid and other nutrients, one will notice improvement. Permutation and combination
It was recently reported that the shoot of Lootera starring Sonakshi and Ranveer had been delayed to next year mid February due to Ranveer Singh’s accident while shooting. As a result, it would take some time to procure the combination dates of its principal actors.
Vikramaditya Motwane, who was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s assistant director on Hum Dil Chuke Sanam and Devdas, and directed the highly acclaimed Udaan, has shown his mentor that it is payback time. His Lootera was being planned for a mid-Feb release, but now has been pushed to 29 March 2013, as there was an overlap of dates for leading man Ranveer Singh. Ranveer who will be shooting with Kareena for Bhansali’s Ram Leela will be unavailable to promote Lootera in Jan and Feb. With Lootera turning into an Easter release, it has become one of the most awaited films. Trade pundits say that like this year’s Easter release Housefull 2, Lootera too has the capability of making it huge. Only time will tell.

I want to adopt: Jennifer Lopez
Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, who already has four-year-old twins Max and Emme with estranged husband Marc Anthony, says she wants to adopt a child. The 42-year-old, who recently finished a new movie What to Expect When You're Expecting, was moved after working with a pair of twins who had been adopted from Ethiopia after their mother died on the film, reported a publication online.
"It's funny because before the movie, I never really thought about adoption, I just always wanted to have my own baby and I was so focused on that and it took me a while to have my own. But after the film and during the making of the film when I held those two little Ethiopian twins I fell in love instantly and I can see how somebody can do this, how it is so easy to embrace a child who has nothing. It's a beautiful, selfless act of love and it's something that you go, 'OK, I understand these feelings, I get this. I almost took those babies home. I fell in love with those babies," she said. However, Lopez, who is dating backing dancer Casper Smart, said she is kept busy raising Max and Emme. "Adoption would be a blessing but I'm focused on doing it right with those two and I've really got my hands
full." — PTI

Down to earth...
Arjun Rampal and Abhay Deol are currently shooting for Prakash Jha’s film Chakravyuh which is based on the naxalite situation in the country. And in keeping with the mood of the film, Prakash Jha has zeroed-in on to some deep interiors of Madhya Pradesh for the shoot.
For the actors, it is a huge change as both Arjun Rampal and Abhay Deol are known to be big city guys. And in this film they not only have to project a rustic persona but also need to shoot in areas that have no modern facilities. As Arjun Rampal plays a cop in the film and Abhay Deol a naxalite, both spent time acclimatising themselves to very different environment and went through workshops with Prakash Jha. Though they had to rehearse for almost a week before beginning work on the film, both have steadily gained comfort with the role and environment and actually started enjoying the process.

THE YEAR AHEAD
If your birthday is May 17...
Jupiter is entering your sign Tauras, which indicates a lot of development this year in you overall life. But keeping other planetary positions in view, do not allow the feeling of frustration overtake you. Money gains will not be to your expectations. People you live with will not be very happy with you, regardless of what you do to please them. However, you will feel the fragrance of your friend in his absence. If you are considering a new business partnership, it would be essential to get all the facts in hand before you make any commitment. You will make commitment to the people who look up to you for help. Other parties may portray a dirty picture, so delay committing to anything questionable. Meanwhile, conducting your own work (and life) with values-based strategies means never having to say ‘you’re sorry’. A co-worker, a partner or even a competitor deserves particular attention. You’ll want to change something at work but won’t know what it is exactly. Maybe you could improve your organizational skills and speed up your procedures. The stars advise those of the second decade to pay particular attention to money movements if they do not wish to risk going into
the red. Students will do remarkably well and their hardwork will get them distinctive grades in exams. Most of you will opt for higher education and will take to some specialized field of work. Those studying in junior classes will do very well and feel enthused to get into the merit lists. Emotions appear to be deep but very ‘shortlived’ should they dominate, especially if you are dealing with a member close to you and on any subject related to money. Avoid allowing ‘outsiders’ into your inner circle. You will expand your work and achieve manifold increase in profits. Joint ventures and partnerships will get revamped to your advantage. Some business tie-ups are likely to get dissolved and that will be for the better. Employed persons will get an increase in salary. An old friend may communicate and ask you to assist another ‘in your area.’ Do so, as it indicates that for some of you it will be a profitable and ‘interesting’ favour. Your health will be fine throughout, though some of you may put on extra weight. This will be more applicable to those in the age group 12–19 and 25–39. Mood: Distracted and terribly busy. Compatible signs: Scorpio, Pisces. Lucky colours: Pearl white, Stone grey Lucky days: Friday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 2, 3, 19, 20, 23. Lucky gem: Topaz - The Spiritual Rejuvenation Gemstone. Lucky flower: Bluebell
