Stuff dreams are made of…
Ayushmann Khurrana, riding high on the success of Vicky Donor, says he couldn't have got a better start to his career in B-town
Ashima Batish

That's how the dream trajectory of a career looks like - beginning from winning a reality show, taking up a job of a VJ, hosting reality shows, getting to make a debut in Bollywood and with that delivering a sleeper hit that made everybody who matters wake up and take note of the new talent! Ayushmann Khurrana has made it quite big with and as Vicky Donor in the film; big enough to make his fans line-up for a picture, to make women of all age groups vie for a handshake, to inaugurate new ventures! He is back home in Chandigarh for the third cause — at the opening of Rollstar In Panchkula, an eating joint that will serve assorted rolls.

Ayushmann is overwhelmed with the attention he is getting, "That's the best compliment we artistes get. That's the measure of my popularity and how much the audiences have appreciated my work in Vicky Donor." Compliments flowed in from the big names of the industry as well, Aditya Chopra, Farah Khan, Sajid Khan and Akshay Kumar being a few. In between the conversation, the cameras continued clicking, fans didn't stop introducing themselves and the star-in-the-making obliged gladly. "It feels nice to be on the other side of the microphone, answering questions, but I have a long way to go. In fact, stardom is one thing an actor can never take for granted. Had that been the case, no big actor would have had a single flop in his career."

Next in line is Hamara Bajaj, a film under the banner of John Abraham productions again. Also, he might go behind the cameras for Jaffna, which stars John as well. "Important is to be a part of the film-making process. It can be as an actor or assistant director." Glamour has the flip side too — link-ups, rumours, camp fights…Ayushmann pledges to stay unfazed. "I am only answerable to my wife. Rest I will never bother to even clarify."

As of now, he is busy celebrating the success of Vicky Donor. Now, as a subject, sperm donation might sound too bold in the first place but he feels it's just in keeping with the time. "The movie isn't ahead of its time. The rate of infertility is high; sperm donation makes a lot of sense in the present times." Whatever apprehensions he initially had about the story-line were put to rest once he got to know the movie will be directed by Shoojit Sircar of Yahan and Shoebite fame. "I couldn't have got a better start in the industry." He certainly couldn't have, looking at his fan-following just after one film, especially the one in pink who brought a huge bouquet, his claim stands true!

A legend, forever
The doyen of Punjabi music industry Gurdas Maan believes in accepting changes and moving ahead with the younger generation
Manpriya Singh

Trust a legend like Gurdas Maan to overshadow what he's come to put the spotlight on. Which is why, singer Rupinder Handa's new album takes a backseat and everybody else is vying to reach the front of the crowd, taking pictures on cell-phones, asking questions and getting autographs! Whether you are young and not resting, or are very young and still rapping, everyone has listened to and loved Challa, never mind the remixed version.

A legend like him has his own logics and which is why, he still continues to connect. "I'm not against anybody, neither against today's youngsters or musicians or their kind of music. They have been born and brought up in such a westernized culture that you can't blame them for composing and listening to what they are." At DLF City Centre Mall, to release the album Loving Waves, he clears the air over a recently held press conference against a certain singer.

"We can try moulding them in their way but to a certain extent we have to accept the changes and move ahead with the youth," he adds. "They haven't read Mirza, nor Heer Ranjha and Waris Shah, so we can't blame them for not tuning into them."

There is perhaps, no territory in singing that remains unexplored by him; song-writing, singing, choreography and acting. With all the other honours and trivia intact on his wall of fame; it's a journey of two-and-a-half decades and still counting. "My journey till now has been satisfying and complete, but one is never satisfied. There is a new generation with immense talent and when they look up to you, pay you compliments one is all the more eager to do better."

Lined up is a movie Punjab-A-Zubaan; buat the role he's not ready to reveal and an album whose name he hasn't yet decided. "The songs for my next album are ready, though I haven't yet zeroed down on a name for the album." Once again the crowd takes over and comes to the forefront.

Voice over

Despite hits like Fulkarian and a reality show like Awaz Punjab Di, Rupinder Handa still needs a backgrounder. The M.Phil in music talks about her third album Loving Waves. "It's an album with sad and romantic numbers because that's what people expect from me. But it's a complete album with dance tracks, slow songs, and peppy music; English style and desi tadka." She adds, "I have consciously made an effort and kept in mind that all the songs a family should be able to hear and listen together." When it comes to female singers in the Punjabi music industry, Miss Pooja probably sets the benchmark. "She's very talented. And though in the world of singing, she's made an unparalleled name, as far as shows are concerned, everybody else is doing shows at their own level; even I have done shows in Canada." She adds, "Any industry is male-dominated, but you have to go the extra mile and make your presence felt." It all sounds like any other album lined up with tracks till she croons a slow track and wins appreciation of the gathered crowd!

Flirting with danger!
Vikram Bhatt gets candid on her upcoming venture Dangerous Ishq and much more
Sabia Talwar

Dangerous Ishq is a much-talked about movie off late. The reason is not difficult to fathom — Karisma Kapoor is making a comeback to the big screen after six years. Even the subject is quite unique; Karisma plays five different characters covering historical and spiritual events, spanning from ancient times to the Partition of India to the assassination of Indira Gandhi and through to present-day politics! We talk to the director, producer and writer, Vikram Bhatt, who has put his vision together for this movie.

Is it a horror movie?

First and foremost, I want to clear the air about Dangerous Ishq being a horror movie. People are highly misinformed as the movie is a thriller revolving around the process of past life regression.

Personal touch

I thought of making Dangerous Ishq only after I experienced the whole process of past life regression. I'm also inclined towards meditation now for the very same reason. It surely proved that people who love you and people who hate you follow through in all your possible births.

Casting corner

It is a regular question put to me as to why I took Karisma Kapoor in Dangerous Ishq. And I always answer the same thing — Karisma is a great actor and she is a timeless beauty who fit exactly into the storyline of the movie. And why only Rajneesh Duggal? My immediate reaction is why not. They are all goods actors and somewhere I believe that my cast will prove their worth.

The scary effect

Vikram has made horror movies like 1920, Shaapit and then Haunted-3D; we wonder why he likes this genre! "I like to know about the unknown; I like the supernatural powers. The 'what if' factor about them really inspires me to make horror movies! Somewhere I believe that such kind of powers do exist and I have had first-hand experience with them.

Future tense

Right now my first attempt is to successfully release Dangerous Ishq on May 11. Talking about Raaz 3, the project is Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt's baby. The next in the pipeline is Love Games starring Paoli Dam, whom I launched through the movie Hate Story. The story of Love Games revolves around the bold subject of wife-swapping.

Clashing dates

Along with Dangerous Ishq there is another movie releasing on May 11 and that is Yash Raj Films movie Ishaqzaade. "If both the movies are good both will do well in their own terms and areas, respectively."

Lucky charm

Vikram's 18-year-old daughter is his lucky charm. Krishna is with me all the time and does a lot of work with me as well. Krishna, who played the role of a pianist in the movie Haunted, is also a part of Dangerous Ishq.

Pest-ering issue
satish narula

There are many methods of controlling insects, pests and diseases. The most required thing is, however, visiting the plants regularly. And believe me, they talk to you. Only thing required is to understand their language. You can do so with experience and by keeping an eye on your plants. This way you can solve many a problem, be it a nutrient deficiency, appearance of a disease or an insect. When the problem is nipped in the bud, it saves irreparable loss to the plants.

See the accompanying picture. The insects, the hairy caterpillar larvae first appear on one plant as the eggs are laid at one site in the garden. The emerging larvae when grow to move, leave that plant and spread in the whole of the garden. It is easy to control them when they are congregating on one plant rather than after they spread in the garden. While moving in the garden, keep an eye on the damaged plant or leaves. You may find them there in a large number. Physically remove them by collecting at that stage and destroy. By this single move you will be able to save your garden without affecting any spray. This method thus is environment friendly too.

Similarly, there are other insects that can be mechanically controlled. Take for example the lemon butterfly larva. As it appears, it looks like a bird drop on the leaves. Being a voracious feeder that can devour a full grown leaf in five minutes, it grows in size to become a green caterpillar. Approach it and it throws red antenna to scare you. Another defense mechanism with this insect is offensive odour and once you become familiar with that you can predict its presence even without actually seeing it on the plant. Another symptom of its presence, besides the eaten leaves is the dropped excreta near the base of the tree. One can physically remove the insect and kill it by crushing or throwing insecticide dissolved in bucket, rather than spraying the whole plant.

Aphids are natural pests in any home garden. The young nymphs usually congregate at the terminal of the plants. There are many a chemical available, both the contact type and the systemic type that go into the system of the plant. Such chemicals are very effective in controlling the pest. But there is another way of doing it. Spray the plant with sharp water jet and wash the insects to the ground. The population comes down considerably.

Biryani blast!
Initially an exotic dish, biryani is now an integral part of the menu of any foodie
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

As soon as we hear the word biryani, our taste buds are sweetly tickled. Although we learnt the art of making biryani from Persian travellers, over a period of time we have innovated and come up with different varieties to suit our tastes.

“Biryani is one dish that has been vastly experimented with and has turned into an authentic and conventional cuisine of the country,” says Rajeev Kakkar, group general manager, Hotel Western Court. He adds, “It is indeed one dish that has gone to the world and people have altered it to suit their tastes. As for us, we have one fusion briyani which is a mix of chilly cheese, manchurian and rice. However, the dum biryani, Hyderabadi murg nizam biryani and gatte ki biryani are the most ordered.”

Among the varieties available, the most preferred are the Hyderabadi, Kashmiri and Lucknawi biryanis. “Hyderabadi biryani remains a favourite with most people; it is more of a Mughlai preparation with a lot of spices, soft mutton pieces, curd, rice and saffron,” says an employee of Awadh (The Royal Kitchen) in Panchkula. He adds, “Lucknawi biryanis too are a speciality; they are cooked differently with meat and rice at a slow flame that gives it a tender and aromatic flavour.”

As far as the Kashmiri biryani is concerned, it has a touch of sweetness because the dish has raisins and dry fruits as accompaniment. “Kashmiri biryani is a popular item; it is a mixture of marinated mutton, chicken or vegetables,” says Vivek, owner and the chef at Forno in Chandigarh and Panchkula.

For the foodies

  • Biryani, biriani, or beriani is a set of rice-based foods made with spices, rice, meat, fish, eggs and vegetables.
  • The name is derived from the Persian word bery, which means ‘fried’ or ‘roasted’.
  • The cooking method of biryani originated in Iran (Persia) and it was brought to India by Iranian travellers and merchants.
  • Local variants of this dish are popular not only in South Asia but also in Southeast Asia, Arabia and various South-Asian communities in Western countries.

Shanghai calling

Emraan Hashmi is a popular hero, literally! At the music launch, a crowd waited for over two hours just to catch a glimpse of him. He clicks with teenagers, school-going children, and adults, girls and boys! His success story has become even more amazing in the last couple of years with hits such as Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai, Murder 2, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji, Jannat 2 and The Dirty Picture. Shanghai looks very promising and he has a completely different look in the film. He talks about the movie and his character.

Thrilling experience

Shanghai is a relevant film. Dibakar has made an interesting story into a film. All of us have makeovers in the film. I am sure that this film is going to be a landmark film for us and for Bollywood. I would want Shanghai to have the collections of a mainstream film. It has all the trappings of a commercial film. It is a political thriller but the music has been used very well and Vishal-Shekhar have done a brilliant job with the music. I hope my success streak continues with this movie.

Endearing pimp

Jogi Parmar is a raw, real, and rooted character. He is very desi. That is why we did the rickshaw entry at the music launch. He has a raw sexuality about him. He is a multi-talented guy—he is a pimp, a small-town journalist, model co-coordinator, and wedding video shooter. He is very different from the characters I have played before, I can assure you of that. Jogi Parmar is weird looking but he has a heart of gold and is quite endearing.

The look

Dibakar conceived this character and his look. We did many look tests for the character. I attended many workshops. The result has paid off. I love the makeover Dibakar has given me. I had to gain weight and look a few shades darker. I even had to wear bad teeth. I was very excited about looking this grotesque in the movie and told Dibakar to pull out all the stops. He was nervous whether I would agree or not. I wanted to be someone I have never played before. It took me an hour everyday to get ready. I had two months to gain weight and was put on a junk food diet with pizzas, doughnuts, burgers, pastas, and all that. I gained 9-10 kgs. Even when we were shooting in Baramati, junk food like pizza and pasta was sent to my room.

Miss Lovely goes to Cannes

Miss Lovely which is to be screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the upcoming Cannes Festival, an official section, ties up with Fortissimo Film a multi-national film production, sales and distribution company. The company has been behind such East Asian films as Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love, the Thai films Tears of the Black Tiger and Last Life in the Universe, as well as such independent films as Pleasure Factory, Super Size Me, Mysterious Skin and Shortbus.

Fortisssimo’s Chairman, Michael J Werner, said, “Ashim is a true original on the Indian cinema scene; he’s an auteur and an intellectual combining a vibrant imagination with commercial sensibilities. With Miss Lovely, he compels us to enter this  exotic and  erotic and  visceral universe of  the  Bollywood underbelly that is so atmospheric, so jarring  and so unique  that we can’t  turn away. We are so thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him and his team on this amazing film.”

Director Ashim Ahluwalia said, “Fortissimo has been a company that I’ve always been sort of obsessed with. I mean, I know their early catalogue better than most people should. They’ve backed Hou Hsiao Hsien, Wong Kar Wai and much of the contemporary cinema that I love. I am very happy to see Miss Lovely with them and amongst those incredible films. I am looking forward to working together with Michael and the Fortissimo team.”

Miss Lovely is to be screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, an official section that gives pride of place to movies that have (in the words of the Festival organizers) “an original aim and aesthetic”. When you watch Miss Lovely, there is no doubt that it has both of these in spades, as you might expect from the director of the path-breaking film John and Jane. That film, with its mix of documentary and non-documentary techniques, garnered its director Ashim Ahluwalia a National Award for best documentary as well as a number of International film awards.

The Sufi touch

When there’s a film starring Emraan Hashmi there’s bound to be a Sufi song. Now, music label T-Series has insisted on one more romantic number be added to the soundtrack of the film.

But since the film Shanghai is a political thriller and not a love story, Dibakar was worried about adding a song that has no connect with the film and he didn’t want it to stand out like a sore thumb in the film.

Hence Dibakar Banerjee discussed the song with Emraan and they both decided that Dibakar would shoot the song himself so that the film retains its continuity.

And in the true Dibakar style, he has used a disadvantage into an interesting angle. Now the song will shot as a sequel to the film and will show Jogi Parmar’s (Emraan’s name in the film) life after the film.

The song has been completed and will soon be included in the film too.

The chord connection
Angad Hasija expresses his love for his mother. Read up to find what he says....
Mama’s boy: Angad Hasija
Mama’s boy: Angad Hasija

When destiny changes its course and trials fall upon us, a mother is the truest friend we have. My mother is the most beautiful woman in my life. I owe my career to her if it was not for her belief in me I would have not been in this industry.

Her constant support and positive outlook has made me successful in my field. Whenever I am low just a one liner from her “Maine bolana, this will do wonders for you” peps me up and whatever she says is always the case. Classic example is my character Alekh. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her. Everything I wish for will be due to my angel mother. Wishing every mother out there a very happy mothers day! It’s just one day a year dedicated to showing our mothers how much we love them, but really, we should be thankful for our mothers everyday!

Unusual name, unusual dreams
Gulki Joshi
Donning a new role: Gulki Joshi

Smart as whip and sweet as a bird, with an unusal name Gulki Joshi has embarked on TV with a show Phir Subah Hogi as the lead. Here she talks about her role, costars and her career.

Is this your debut show?

No, I have done Crime Patrol earlier but this is my first big show as lead. I am very excited to be part of this show.

How similar are you to Suguni?

Very. We are both chirpy talkative people but I am not as naïve as her. I too have ambitions and dreams like her. It is easy for me to play this role as I can connect with her very well.

How is your rapport with Narayani Shastri in the show?

She plays my mai- mother in the show and is a senior actor. It was tough for me in the first few days to be around her as I was intimidated by her. I had to do some hugging scenes which is when she sensed I was bit uncomfortable and talked to me. She is sweet and very accommodating. Now we chat freely during breaks.

And what about Varun Badola?

He too is senior but since both of us from a theatre background, so breaking the ice with him was perhaps easier. I got along well with him and he guides me in the scenes when needed.

What do you think of trend to cash in on rural shows?

I feel every subject is apt in its own way and it depends on the treatment of the same or else all shows would look the same.

Have you met any Badeni women?

I have not met them but seen videos of women who dance for a living and follow the customs shown in the show. I believe there are women who are like the ones shown in the show.
