New senior advocates have many firsts to their credit
Chandigarh, May 9 Released by the High Court on Tuesday, the list is unique as it has at least two lawyers, Anand Chhibbar and Vinod Ghai, who form the second generation of senior advocates. Their fathers too are practicing senior advocates. So far in the Punjab and Haryana High Court's history, there have been only five instances of both father and son being designated senior advocate and practicing at the same time. They include Manmohan Lal Sarin and HL Sibbal. Besides this, Puneet Bali is one of the youngest lawyers to be designated senior by the Full Court. Narender Hooda too has the exceptional distinction of being the youngest lawyer to be selected as senior advocate from Haryana's Jat community. Anand Chhibbar's father Rajinder Kumar Chhibbar has the rare honour of being a senior advocate for the past 30 years. In fact, Rajinder Chhibbar has been a part of the Punjab and Haryana High Court since 1962 and was only recently credited for safeguarding senior advocate Seth Bhagirath Dass's legacy. He was initially representing an applicant. But during the course of proceedings, the applicant died; and Chhibbar was left without instructions. He continued to appear "as a member of the general public". His endless efforts saw the resurrection of Seth Bhagirath Dass's inheritance and in putting his property to use for charitable and educational purposes as spelled out in his Will. But, Anand Chhibbar is known not just as Rajinder Chhibbar's son. After graduating as a lawyer from Panjab University in 1990, he has over the years made a mark for himself as a company and a corporate lawyer. Vinod Ghai's elevation as a senior advocate has made his family one of the firsts in the recent times to have three lawyers with senior as a prefix. His father RS Ghai and his brother Bipin Ghai are already senior advocates. Vinod has essentially been practicing on the criminal side and specialises in life-sentence cases and murder references, where death sentence has been awarded to the convicts. A 1989-batch graduate from Panjab University, it is believed Vinod has to his credit the distinction of dealing with the maximum number of criminal cases. When SK Garg Narwana shifted to the High Court at Chandigarh in 1995 after handling civil suits and criminal trials before the subordinate courts, there was no way anyone could have guessed that the 1982-batch law graduate from Kurukshetra University would go on to become Haryana's Additional Advocate-General, senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department and eventually senior advocate. Narwana specialises in election petitions and constitutional matters and is handling the sensitive matter of disqualification of Haryana's seven Independent MLAs. A third-generation advocate, Puneet Bali only recently hit the headlines by representing Chief of the Army Staff Gen VK Singh before the Supreme Court in his age dispute matter. He also successfully challenged Haryana entry tax, while arguing the matter on behalf of Indian Oil Corporation. A graduate from St Stephens College, Delhi, he did his LLB from Panjab University's Department of Laws in 1995. Also a keen cricketer, he has represented the State of Haryana in Ranji Trophy. Amit Rawal is the only black coat among whites. Belonging to the family of doctors, he did his law from Panjab University in 1986 and has been dealing with civil, rent and corporate matters. The son of the soil, Narender Hooda, is Haryana senior additional advocate-general and has been dealing with the constitutional and service matters. For Ashish Aggarwal, law books and working late hours is nothing new. His maternal grandfather was a senior advocate and his father too has been practicing for past half-a-century. |
