Contours of fashion
A fantasy, a whim, a need to look better, fashion is all about how you perceive it…
Manpriya Singh

Fashion, to some, is frivolity. For others, it’s a fantasy. When Marc Jacobs says something on fashion, it becomes a part of the quotable quotes. Period. He struck many a chords with the recent statement, “Anything to me that is part of the joy, the ritual, of getting dressed — things that women enjoy like bags, shoes, fragrance, clothes, make-up - that’s what fashion’s about for me.” Coco Chanel wouldn’t be what she is if she didn’t view fashion as “something that doesn’t exist in dresses only.” Donatella Versace stating, “Fashion is all about happiness. It’s fun. But it’s not medicine,” is as true as indubitable.

How our homegrown designers view the concept is not very different. “Fashion, to begin with, can’t be defined. It’s a vast subject, sans boundaries. But yes, it’s about how you live, dress up; what car you drive to what perfume you wear. Your entire lifestyle amalgamates into constituting fashion,” Jai of designer duo Parvesh & Jai tries to get the parameters right.

Before anyone gets the wrong hints, pictures an endless vanity, he draws the breaks. “Even a tribal lady wearing armlets can be very fashionable.” It’s time to define and redefine the idea; push the boundaries a little or may be lift them altogether! Says Delhi-based designer Nida Mahmood, “It’s everything you do. Right from how you live your life to what you wear to even how you perceive things; that is what fashionable is to me.” She adds, “It doesn’t fall in a box with a particular size, fashion is all-pervading term. Even a plain loose sweater can be fashionable if that is how you perceive it. If you like it, it becomes you.”

Perhaps Jacobs had an eye on the pulse of the women. “I love the opportunity, wherever there is one, to adorn, to decorate, to scent, to dress. That’s what fashion’s all about. It’s not necessary, it’s something you want — it’s a fancy and a whim.” That fancy and whim could be street-wear off the shacks or the limited edition collection from an upscale label.

Opines Reynu Tandon, Delhi-based designer, “Every single woman has the desire to look pretty; it’s a passion for dressing up nicely, to look beautiful. When a woman looks at herself in the mirror, it’s your heart, your lifestyle.” As one of the designers summed it up anonymously: “Take a look at yourself right now; your hairstyle to the footwear, everything else in between defines your sense of fashion and who you are.” That rests everything, for now!

On sale—success
In his latest book — You Can Sell —motivational speaker Shiv Khera talks about the art of selling successfully
Ashima Batish

There is a lot of addition to what all sells in India. In contrast to what Neha Dhupia claimed once upon a time, “only sex and Shah Rukh Khan sell in India”, job-seekers in interviews, lawyers, politicians, salesmen…just about everybody is in the selling business, selling just-about-everything! It’s this aspect of our society that is the subject of motivational speaker Shiv Khera’s latest book — You Can Sell. “Success today is determined by one’s ability or inability to sell,” says the author.

In the book, he has explained the need and effective ways to sell oneself; but ethics remain integral to his tips. “Every sales person now calls himself a marketing professional because there’s a stigma attached to being one. It happened because sales professionals initially used a lot of tricks to sell their products. Fast buck minus ethics doesn’t guarantee story.” Taking a cue from his famous book, You Can Win, he says the title of this one is very direct, “Anybody can sell if the method and principles are right. Winning is the end, selling is the means.”

Shiv Khera has his main office in Singapore and is touring India once again to conduct lectures; the most recent being with the Supreme Court judges. “The most basic topic I pick is —what matters is the ability to deal with people, knowledge comes second.” He explains the reason: “Any technology changes after five years. An enterpreneur can’t keep a tab on everything, what he then does is hire technicians. It all thus boils down to people; even the wealthiest person in the world has to build relationships with people.” He adds that people who are doing really well in life have 90 per cent interpersonal communication skills working for them; the rest 10 per cent being knowledge.

Khera quotes the greatest leaders of the world — Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, who he says became famous only because they were able to deal with people well. At the same time, he doesn’t feel that leaders of today work on the same fundamentals, but for that he also holds the society responsible. “No society is like 24-carat pure gold. The world moves around 10 per cent honest and corrupt people each. The rest of the 80 per cent just follow whichever side makes more sense to them. Unfortunately, it’s bad side that people bend towards more.” For the same reason, the corrupt 10 per cent are able to sell better!

A LINE that matters

Change the game — Pepsi’s new punch-line underlines the innovation required to captivate the mind of the audiences. The same goes for Bollywood movies as well, which is reflected in their poster-perfect taglines. Ishaqzaade hain jitne fasano mein, milte hain kahan ab jahanon mein — the tagline lays down the youthful attitude of Arjun Kapoor and Parineeta Chopra in the movie Ishaqzaade!

The ‘yet-to-be-released’ movie Department comes with a tagline — Justice is their crime; the successful Vicky Donor has Lakhon mein ek and then there is Rowdy Rathore that has come up with different taglines such as Naya saal, naya maal, Faulad ki aulad, Kheloge pyar se, bachoge maar se. Even the ravishing Karisma Kapoor is making a comeback with her 2D/3D movie Dangerous Ishq, which earlier had a tagline — Searching for her love…through many lives. And this one gives a hint that the movie is based on past life regression therapy.

We wonder why these taglines are required? Says Vikram Bhatt, a well-known director, “Taglines sometimes give a direction to the movie and to the audiences. For instance, the tagline of my movie Dangerous Ishq removes any confusion that it is just a love story.” The taglines are not only placed on the aesthetically designed doors (posters) of the movies, but used during promotional trailers as well. So what’s the marketing angle? “In the process of marketing, there are two things what the film-makers have to look at - one is awareness and the other is intrigue. Taglines help in building the curiosity level of the audiences,” says Vikram.

The phenomena is not just restricted to Bollywood, Hollywood is not far behind. The Twilight series have taglines that give a sequential feel, When you can live forever, what do you live for?, The next chapter begins, It all begins with a choice and Forever is the only beginning. Is there a need to use these one-liners for every movie? “No, taglines are not necessary for each and every movie. They just help in framing a correct picture in the mind of audiences,” says Shoojit Sircar, director of Vicky Donor. Its tagline Lakhon Mein Ek talks about Vicky Arora, the main character in the movie. “Tag-lines give an insight into the story,” adds Shoojit.

Whereas the taglines can be compared to punch-lines for advertisements, what kind of effort really goes into creating them? Says Lalit Sharma, CEO of Mantrin Advertisement Agency, Chandigarh, “Nowadays everything is market-oriented and it is all about communicating the right message. Tag-lines help in sharing the gist of story in a few words. A lot of effort and thought goes into creating them and one needs an insight into the psyche of the audience.” Whatever the case, taglines sure work wonders!

Dream come true

Charlize Theron, who recently adopted a baby boy named Jackson, has revealed that she had always wanted to give a home to a child since she was just eight. The Oscar-winning actress made the revelations in an interview saying that she always knew it would happen.

“My mother found a letter that I wrote when I was eight years old that said, ‘Would you please take me to an orphanage so that I can go and adopt a baby?’ I always knew I would adopt – always,” a publication quoted her as saying.

Theron, 36, who stars in upcoming movies Snow White And The Huntsman and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, relies on her mother Gerda to help her look after her son.

“My mum is pretty amazing. I left today, I’m getting on a plane back tonight, and she and Jackson were at Macy’s shopping so I’m hoping my credit card is OK,” she added. —ANI

A close call

Mena Suvari has revealed that she almost walked away from Hollywood forever when she became disillusioned with the movie industry after the huge success of American Beauty. The blonde star shot to fame in Sam Mendes’ multi-Oscar winning 1999 drama, and was nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award for best supporting actress for her role as vain Angela Hayes.

She was hailed as one of the Hollywood’s hottest properties following her turn in the film, but Suvari has revealed she nearly walked away from making movies because she felt like a “pawn”.

“I did have to grow up faster because I suddenly had to learn a lot about the business and was feeling the pressure I hadn’t felt before,” a website quoted her as telling a magazine.

“I remember feeling very rebellious around 2000, after the film came out. Before then I had a very organic approach to acting and that it was a creative process, but I realised very quickly that this was a business.

“I didn’t like feeling like a pawn, a profit, and I remember a moment or two when I thought, ‘I’m walking away from all this.’ I wanted to be in control of my life again and I could really understand how a lot of people in Hollywood lose it,” she said.

Tried and tested

Noted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who is eagerly eyeing the release of his latest production Jannat 2, says it is an apt title as the sequels are a safe bet when it comes to box office results.

Bang on: Mahesh BhattJannat 2, a sequel to 2008 hit film Jannat, has illegal arms trade as its backdrop, whereas the earlier movie was based on the issue of match-fixing. Earlier, Jannat 2 was titled Informer, but it was later changed primarily to lure the audience. “When we called the film Informer, we got a very cold response, so we renamed it as Jannat 2. The title was not generating excitement in the market. For a blockbuster mentality, the opening weekend is always important. It gives you a feeling of safety. What Jannat 2 can do, Informer would not do,” Mahesh Bhatt said.

“With sequels, audience feels the second or third part is close to what they have experienced in previous film. A new face, a newcomer, or a new title is not picked up by people immediately, but if it is familiar then it works in most cases. So the safety is to take the franchise forward. A franchise does give you an illusion of safety,” he said.

Jannat 2 is a tumultuous rollercoaster journey of a hard-bitten cop and his hustling informer set against the murky backdrop of the arms trade in north India. Releasing this Friday, the film directed by Kunal Deshmukh stars Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta and Randeep Hooda.

The last release from Bhatt camp was Kunal Khemu starrer Blood Money, which was earlier titled Kalyug 2. But the title was changed later and the movie did not have a decent run at the box office.

“In case of Blood Money, people did come to watch but I had to work 20 times harder. We realised that it is difficult to sensitise people if you have something new and a new star,” Bhatt said.

Hunt is on...

Jennifer Aniston is looking for pads in Richmond, a suburb outside of London, where ex husband Brad Pitt and his fiancee Angelina Jolie rented last year and plan to spend much of the next two years. While Aniston is in London filming a low-budget comedy drama Miss You Already, her representatives have been viewing homes for her.

“She hasn’t had anything to do with Brad since their 2005 divorce. But if they are both living in the same neighbourhood it could lead to awkward encounters,” a publication quoted a source as saying.

Many Hollywood A-listers like George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Sandra Bullock have enjoyed the stay at southwest London borough while filming different projects.

“Film stars like it because it is a part of London and yet has a country feel,” a source said.

Meanwhile, Pitt and Jolie, who last month announced their engagement, are to return to Richmond this week after their break in the Galapagos Islands.—ANI

Replacement

Top Gun actor Tom Cruise will replace Hugh Jackman of X-Men fame as the title character in the new Van Helsing movie. Jackman, 43, starred in the fictional role of vigilante monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing in the 2004 film but Cruise will be taking over in a “re-imagining” of the franchise, reported a publication.

The new script will be written by Transformers screenwriting duo, Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci who have signed a two-year contract with the Universal Studios bosses and Cruise is already attached to star and produce the film. The original film featured Underworld actress Kate Beckinsale, 38, but it is not known if she will star in the new movie. —PTI

I am an actress, not an eye candy: Tannishtha

Actress Tannishtha Chatterjee says she is happy not being a typical Bollywood actress masked by dollops of make-up and she would rather have her work do the talking. The actress, who has starred in a number of international projects besides regional and Hindi films, says she is an actress, not an eye candy. “Directors come to me when they want someone beyond a pretty face. Make-up, lighting and glamour can make anyone look good but I feel acting is beyond looking good. Eye candy beauty can last for two minutes but not for the whole two hours of the film. What matters to me as an actress is performance and nothing else,” Tannishtha said.

Having starred in off-beat films like Swaraj, Road, Movie, Brick Lane, Shadows of Time, the NSD graduate says she is happy to see the shift in Bollywood filmmaking.

“The success of films like Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani and Vicky Donor shows that the urban audience today is very intelligent. They want to see good stories being told on screen. Even they don’t want to see mindless films. Filmmakers are finally realising this,” she says.

Tannishtha will be seen in a number of Bollywood films like BMW (Bombay’s Most Wanted), Monsoon Shootout, Gour Hari Dastan, Dekh Indian Circus and I Love NY this year.

“These are very different from the mainstream films. They are short, quirky and have a very strong story line. Every film has its own space. I have made an effort to stay away from roles that are repetitive,” says the actress.

“In BMW I play a bar singer, in Monsoon Shootout I play a gangster’s wife, in I Love NY, I play a cool, chic Chicago girl. In Dekh Indian Circus I play a village woman. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be these different characters.” —PTI

Best for the last

His underworld drama Shootout at Wadala travels from 1978 to 1981 and director Sanjay Gupta says that creating the right background was a big challenge as everything has changed a lot in the last three decades.

“It is the most challenging film which I have shot till date. It covers 1978-81. Everything has changed, including Mumbai and getting that right was a difficult task,” Gupta, who made Kaante, Zinda, Dus Kahaniyaan, said.

The director has wielded the megaphone to narrate the story of Mumbai police’s first registered shootout in which they gunned down gangster Manya Surve in 1982. He has also scripted and produced the film.

The star cast of Shootout at Wadala seems to be quite a feast for the eyes - it stars Bollywood’s hunk John Abraham along with Anil Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor and Sonu Sood. They all look in perfect shape.

Wedding vows

Mr and Mrs Smith actor Brad Pitt has taken control of planning his wedding to co-star Angelina Jolie this summer because he wants the ceremony to be perfect. Pitt, 48, who raises six children with Jolie, 36, is being involved in every aspect of the big day as he wants the nuptials to be perfect, reported a publication.

“Brad’s been doing extensive renovation on the house and is using a specialist in chateau restoration. Brad’s spent over $ 10 million already. Now he’s offering hefty bonuses to workers to complete it by summer.”

He’s even trying to organise an aeroplane landing site in the grounds for guests to come in by private jet - but that’s proving rather tricky, what with permits and no-fly zones,” a source said.

Pitt, who was previously married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston, wants all the food and drink for the reception to be locally produced and has been very involved with the menu.

“Brad’s been asking all the locals if they’ll be able to source produce from the local area for the reception. It’s certainly going to be a moment in local history,” the source added. —PTI

Will she, won’t she?

Former Hannah Montanna actress Miley Cyrus might be one of the judges on Simon Cowell’s US version of The X Factor. The 19-year-old Party in the USA hit maker has been approached by Cowell’s team and is in negotiations to take a place on the judging panel after the departure of Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul.

“There have been talks with Miley,” a source said. If Cyrus takes up the role she will join judges Cowell, LA Reid and Britney Spears, on the show.

Cowell, 52, previously commenting about Spears, said, “I would love to have her on the show... I think she would be a fascinating. ” The delay in the contract between Cowell and Spears has been cited as the number of series she would have to commit to. —PTI

Banking on determination
Vasudha Gupta

For those who really want to make a mark in their lives, nothing can stop them. Niharika Jindal (24) is one of those, who has kept her focus steady throughout her young life and is now ready to enter the Deutsche Bank after training in New York. We talk to her and find out what keeps her going…

Motivational factor

Keeping your focus intact is the one thing that has played a major role in shaping my life today. I had decided long back that I wanted to study in Delhi and made it to SRCC. Only determination pays off.

Feathers in the cap

Cracking IIM Bangalore in 2010 has been one learning experience, which I will always consider a benchmark of my life. The rest of my life will shape up because of this. I was in the middle of the meltdown when Nomura acquired Lehman Brothers. I consider it one of my major achievements after being a gold medalist in B Com Honours from SRCC. Now, I am equally excited about moving to Deutsche Bank and looking forward to a great experience there.

Strengths and weaknesses

No one is perfect really. Since I have a commerce background, my maths was not so strong. I made three attempts before I cleared CAT but still made it. As far as my strengths are concerned, knowing what I wanted from the very beginning of my life. Yes, a strong will power and the policy of prioritisation take life ahead. You need to be certain as to what you want to do, which makes listing priorities important.

Flipside of being an achiever

Fortunately, I haven’t experienced any flipsides as such. But yes, once you are certain about what you want to do, family tends to take a backseat. I have had to remain out for the most of my education so missing family was probably one thing that I can list as a flipside. Also, one has to put up with a lot of stress and pressures of performance when you make it to one of the top notch institutes.

Words of wisdom

Focus, focus, focus. That all I can say. When you decide what you want out of life, nothing can hold you back from achieving it. Determination and commitment go hand-in-hand to give you what you want in your life.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Get your priorities right
Simmi Waraich

I am 30 and have been living with my parents for the last year as my wife and I are separated. We lived together for three years and had known each other before marriage. However, I was not able to sustain my career as I should have. I am basically a person who does not push much. My wife felt I did not try hard enough. I was fairly good as a student but my family felt I did not achieve my potential. Now I am working in a call centre. I want to make things work out with my wife but when she is critical of me I end up feeling very low. — Ajay, Ambala

Have you both considered marital therapy? Plus it may help to undergo individual therapy as well. Try and see what your wife’s concerns are. Is it having a steady income and job 10 years from now? If so, is the current job you are doing suitable and will it help you to reach that goal? If not, what steps are you taking to work towards another job? Just as people learn human resources and leadership skills in handling teams similarly one can learn to increase one’s motivation levels and also identify what is coming in your way? Is it poor planning or poor goal setting or time management? Setting priorities in life is an important part of growing up.

I have been married for six months. My husband and I have not been able to have a successful physical relationship. What is worse is that he and my mother-in-law do not discuss this with me. They went to a local doctor who gave them some medicine. My-mother-in law is a very suspicious person otherwise too and keeps everything to herself. I have not shared all the details with my family and am very upset. — Puneeta, Patiala

First do talk to your husband and discuss that there are many specialist doctors and one should avoid going to quacks. Many people advertise themselves as specialists but some of them are not even doctors! First it is important to rule out any physical problems which an urologist can do. If he had normal erectile function prior to marriage then it is unlikely to be due to a physical problem. It could be psychosexual. After investigations rule out physical illness, the next step is to get psychosexual counselling. Also do tell your family—as that will reduce stress. At times the stress builds up and I have seen women ending up attempting suicide even.

IT’S ROCKING
Rahat once again...

The recently-released film Tezz had a quick connect with the audience through its Sufi track Tere Bina, if not with its storyline. At one point of time you feel you have heard the best of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, but then again you are served with something fresh and mesmerising which makes for an addictive hearing.

Tere Bina is one such track that leaves an impact with its beautiful composition. Sajid-Wajid have often been successful in producing beautiful love ballads. This track also has a female version sung by Shreya Ghoshal. There is another sad version of the song, again sung in the soulful voice of Rahat.

Magical voice
The soulful voice of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan breaks boundaries on the emotional front and evokes romantic feelings in you. It is a sweet romantic song which will always remain close to my heart. — Jatin Sharma, gym trainer

Complete package
It is a very romantic song which is soothing to ears. The lyrics of the song are simple and meaningful. I enjoy listening to all the three versions of the track. — Soumya Sethi, student, MCM College

One for love
It is a melodious and completely hummable track. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan complements the Sufi feel of the track. One needs time to listen to the track carefully and to move away into a world filled with love.— Naomi Sandhu, housewife

Hit and fit

Sakshi Tanwar Television actress Sakshi Tanwar shares her eating habits and fitness mantra with us…

I watch what I eat

I am health conscious and watch what I eat. I have healthy but tasty meals. I ensure that I have a nourishing and filling breakfast. A bowl of corn flakes allows me to customise it according to my mood and add various fresh fruits and dry fruits. As the saying goes, ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.’ I eat a huge breakfast, a small lunch and a light dinner.

My workout regime

I put aside an hour for a brisk walk or yoga at least five days a week.

Being fit gives confidence

Being fit gives me confidence from within. Fitness is a two pronged approach and it is obvious that one must consciously eat healthy in order to be fit, but it is also important to club this with a regular exercise regime. When you are fit, you feel good about yourself and everything around you. — HRM
