Banur, May 2 More than 15 reputed companies visited the campus and more than 800 final semester students belonging to different polytechnics from Punjab and outside participated in the drive. Some of the companies conducted online tests, while others took written test for selecting students for the interview. Some companies even held group discussions before the interview.

Residents irked over shortage of water
Kalka, May 2 Subsequently, the residents of the colony are forced to buy water tankers to meet their daily needs, thereby causing financial loss to them. The residents further resented that despite numerous reminders to the administration, the authorities have failed to initiative any action for providing adequate water supply. A public health department official on the condition of anonymity said installation of new tube-wells would be a viable solution to this problem. They alleged that at present, water was being supplied in the colony from the Bitna Seuri tube-well. |

Student hangs himself to death
Ambala, May 2 The deceased was identified as Jasbir Singh, a resident of Balo village, Kaithal district. Balwinder Singh, cousin of the deceased, who is also a student of the hotel management in MM University, asked one of his roommates, Nitin, to check Jasbir in the hostel when he did not get any respond from Jasbir on the calls made to him. Nitin informed the warden in this regard and when the room of Jasbir was opened, he was found hanging with the
ceiling fan. The cause of suicide could not be ascertained so far. The body of Jasbir was sent to MMU Medical College for a post-mortem. |

15-acre wheat stubble gutted
Dera Bassi, May 2 As per information, fire broke out this noon and damaged wheat stubble in nearly 15 acres. Fire official Avtar Singh said six fire tenders, including two from
Ambala, two from ammunition depot Dappar, one from Nahar fabrics and one from Dera
Bassi, reached the spot and doused the fire. The reason of the fire could not be ascertained till yet. |

Man acquitted in case of attempt to rape
Chandigarh, May 2 Suresh, a resident of Ram Darbar, forcefully opened the door of their house and tried to rape the daughter-in-law. Seeing this, the mother-in-law raised an alarm and neighbours caught the alleged accused, Suresh, who was later handed over to the police. The court today acquitted the accused after the prosecution failed to prove the charges. |

Robbery case cracked, 1 held
Panchkula, May 2 The accused, identified as Mohammad Dilshan, a resident of Mauli Jagran and presently lodged in the Burail jail, was brought on the production warrant today. He was produced in the court today, which remanded him to three-day police custody. Confirming the same, CIA inspector Surjeet Singh said they had received information that Dilshan was involved in the robbery and was presently lodged in the Burail jail in some theft case, along with two other accomplices. He said investigations in the case were on and would be able to arrest the remaining accused soon. According to police sources, during investigation Dishan told the police that a total of five persons were involved in the robbery. Three of them entered the house, while other two remain outside the house during the robbery. |

Lakshay, Vineet hit centuries
Chandigarh, May 2 Lakshay Rakhara scored an unbeaten 134 off 243 studded with 20 boundaries while his teammate and crease partner Vineet Dhaka contributed 131off 178 including 24 boundaries. The duo rescued the team after scoring a brilliant 230-run partnership for the fourth wicket in 54.1 overs. Vineet was caught by Rohit off medium pacer Manikaran. Earlier, with luck favouring the Chandigarh team, the home team after winning the toss, elected to bat first. The opening pair started off on a poor note and managed to add only 15 runs in first 10 over before Jasnoor Singh (2-run) was caught by wicket keeper Rajput off Manikaran. Skipper Bhagminder Singh was next to go when Karan Kahlon on the individual score of 28 runs cleaned him up. Raman Bishnoi became the third victim of the visiting side after Jalandhar wicketkeeper Rohit stumped him on his individual score of 4-run. Bowler Manikaran struck again after he claimed Pardeep Yadav (16 runs). The home team scored a total of 338 runs after loosing five wickets in 98 overs till the end of day’s play. No. 2 at 9, Vasundhara proves her mettle
Chandigarh, May 2 Vasundhara is being trained under a renowned coach. She has also bagged the honour to become city’s first girl to bring such laurels in Golf Child Prodigy is Nationally Ranked No 2 in the Indian Golf Union Order of Merit for 2011 in her category. The young prodigy has teed off in many championships including the Indian Golf Union Junior Girls Tour, Albatross Junior Golf Championship, CGA Juniors Tour and the US Kids Golf Tour. Last year, she participated in the IGU tournaments for getting all the exposure of the different golf courses. She is currently holding the No 2 rank for the past two years. Adding another feather to her cap, she is the youngest player of her category to bag the 1st position in all the CGA Junior Tournaments. She has also won all the five US Kids Tournaments played with the best score of 2 under par. “I am looking forward to represent the nation in the forthcoming US Kids World Cup to be played in the end of July or early August in Pinehurst (Carolina, USA). I will try to give my best in the competition and moreover, I will try to carry on my present form there,” said Vasundhara. She added, “I am working on few aspects on game especially the chip-in part of the sport. I am also undergoing practice sessions under the guidance of my coach everyday. Hopefully, I will make my city and family proud in future,” said Vasundhara. Her coach, Jesse Grewal, said: “Some people are born talented and some work hard to become so. She is among those who sweat out hard to master the game. She is a keen learner and I have full faith in her.” |
Western Air Command emerge victorious
Chandigarh, May 2 Both the teams failed to score any goal in the stipulated time of 90 minutes including extra time but in the tiebreaker, the winning side clinched the match by 5- 4. For Western Air Command Sgt Sandhu, LAC R Ali, LAC RRK Singh, Cpl Arun Raj and Cpl Sashidharan scored goals while for the South Western Air Command, Sgt WP Singh, Cpl M Jayraj, LAC Sanjeev Kumar and LAC Satpal Singh reduced the margin. Earlier, an exhibition match between Air Force veterans (above 40) was also played. Sanath Kar scored a goal for Air Force Green while Ahluwalia levelled the score for the Air Force Red team. PCA to organise inter-academy matches
Chandigarh, May 2 The six non-residential academies for boys (Under-13 to Under-15) will participate in the competition. The organisers will also select players, who later will compete to book their berth in various district teams, in their respective age gro up. The Punjab Cricket Association is presently running academies in Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Amritsar and Jalan- dhar under professional coaches. |
