PNB told to pay Rs 10,000 as relief to Baltana resident
Mohali, April 24 The forum had directed not only directed the bank to return the amount in question to complainant Chandan Kumar along with fine but also ordered to pay interest at the rate of 10 per cent per annum and Rs 3,000 as cost of litigation. The order has been pronounced by the Bench comprising BS Mehandiratta, president, Dr SS Dhaliwal and H K Ghuman as members of the forum in the case in which Chandan Kumar, a resident of Shyam Nagar, Baltana, had alleged that the PNB was not returning his Rs 10,000 which he had intended to withdraw by using his ATM card on November 10, 2009 at an ATM counter of IDBI Bank, located at Kalgidhar Enclave, Baltana. After having withdrawn Rs 10,000 from the ATM machine, his second attempt of getting Rs 10,000 more had failed due to electricity failure. However, the slip that came out of the ATM machine showed that the second amount of Rs 10,000 had also been debited to his account. He took up the matter with both IDBI Bank and PNB following which the IDBI bank credited the amount in question to the account of PNB. Interestingly, the PNB has not given its credit in the account of the complainant, which amounted to deficiency in service. After its hearings, the forum directed PNB to credit to the account of the complainant, the disputed amount of Rs. 10,000 with interest thereon at the rate of 10 per cent per annum with effect from January 2010 till the date of actual credit. The forum also maintained that in case, the complainant had closed his account with the PNB, the bank should pay the amount in question to the complainant with interest as above through a banker’s cheque within one month from the date of receipt of a certified copy of this order “As the bank has harassed the complainant continuously for two years and caused him mental agony for which it is directed to pay to the complainant compensation to the tune of Rs 10,000 along with the costs of litigation to the tune of Rs 3,000’ stated the order. |

Woman, paramour get life term for husband’s murder
Chandigarh, April 24 The court sentenced Mohini and her lover Kuldeep to life imprisonment for the murder of her (Mohini’s) husband Dharam Singh in July 2010. The two have also been imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each. While pronouncing the order, the court stated, “Both accused were having relations with each other and entered into a conspiracy to kill Dharam Singh when he was asleep. Medical evidence and call details support the fact. The two have taken the life of a young man due to their illicit relationship,” stated the court. The case dates back to the intervening night of July 28 and 29 in 2010 when Mohini and Kuldeep strangulated 26-year-old Dharam Singh. Dharam Singh, who worked as an electrician, was found dead on his cot in the balcony in the morning. Public prosecutor Manish Dua argued before the court that examination of call details of Mohini and Kuldeep revealed that they were in constant touch with each other on the night the murder took place. “When Kuldeep was arrested the next day, strings and an identity card and a purse belonging to Dharam Singh was recovered from his possession. Statements of neighbour Sonia, who was taking a morning walk on her terrace, also provided crucial evidence as she told the court that there was no cot on the terrace in the morning. It then came to light that the victim’s body was later shifted to the terrace on the cot after he was killed,” he said. Dharam lived on a second-floor rented accommodation near Samadhi Gate at Shanti Nagar, Mani Majra. The couple had been married for five years and had shifted to this place only five days before the murder. Mohini, however, had an extra-marital affair with her previous landlord Kuldeep at Dhappar village in Mohali, where they stayed for six months. The couple had gone to the village a fortnight ago, where Dharam got to know of their affair and changed his residence to Mani Majra. As per the prosecution case, Mohini called Kuldeep from her husband’s phone around 3 am and the two tied a sleeping Dharam to the cot and then gagged him with a pillowand strangulated him with a string. Mohini, however, initially cried that it was robbery and told the police that her husband had gone to sleep in the balcony at 2 am, while she slept inside the room. In the morning she discovered that he was dead. After sustained questioning and examination of call details of the accused’s phone, the police arrested Mohini and Kuldeep for the murder. |
