Missing the cup of coffee!
If you are true-blue Chandigarhian, there is no way that the shifting of the Indian Coffee House from Sector 17 to Shimla will not affect you. The dedicated followers of the Indian Coffee House have spent several romantic evenings here lost in the eyes of their partners. Of course the intoxicating aroma of the coffee laced with traces of ghee which engulfs the sense leaves a whole lot of space for the very intelligent conversations.
“The warmth and the ease of the whole place was the best part,” shares Diwan Manna, chairperson of the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi. From his first ever introduction to South Indian food and having those insightful conversations with friends, despite the dirty looks from the owners never diminished his affinity with the place. “The modern eating joints ensure that you don’t spend time there. The chairs are not comfortable and the interiors are not conducive,” he explains. For this exponent of art, it is the friendly ambience, familiar staff, inexpensive drool-worthy South Indian cuisine, which will be missed. “It was the thinking adda for the grey matters,” he laughs. “Yes, it’s as good as losing a close friend,” he adds. Not only for art-lovers, the place lead to simmering of several ideas as well. It was the urge of finding and grabbing some authentic South Indian food, which drove S Sundaram to the Indian Coffee House back in 1977. “I had just moved from Chennai and it was the only place which served real South Indian food,” he recalls. Today, running a flourishing business of Sundarams, a speciality South Indian Chain, he does not deny that the Coffee House motivated him. “Everytime I used to go there, I wanted to open a restaurant,” he smiles. The best part, according to him is, “Just how they have retained the old-world charm and of course Raagini’s poster,” he recollects, looking at the shift as more of a personal loss. Going back into her poetry, Nirupama Dutt shares her version of the story of the Coffee House. The absence of Baristas and Cafe Coffee Days definitely made it a joint for the post morning meeting interactions. The Coffee House, apart from being of great interest to youngsters was also the focal point of economic and serious discussions. “I remember John, one of the waiters ended up being a dear friend,” she adds. From the very typical menu, the special cup of coffee, vegetable burger will be missed. “The Indian Coffee House has been a regular feature in several books, poems and compilations,” she says. “I remember when we ever would perform in front of the Neelam theatre, The Indian Coffee House used to be the treat place,” shares GS Chani, theatre personality. The place for gupshup and all the fond memories will surely live long in the hearts, minds and souls of people. But, seriously, nothing will equal the pleasure of having that steaming cuppa coffee at the Indian Coffee House. vasudha@tribunemail.com
Cause & effect
The shift of the Indian Coffee House from the bustling energy of sector 17 to Shimla has come as an after-effect of the legal suit between the owners of the SCO and the management of Indian Coffee House over rentals. In 2007, the landlords sought the vacation of the premises and in January 2012, a compromise was struck to shift the premises to Shimla. On April 23, after 48 long years, Indian Coffee House will close its shutters.
The modern eating joints ensure that you don’t spend time there. The chairs are not comfortable and the interiors are not conducive. I will miss the friendly ambience, familiar staff, inexpensive drool-worthy South Indian cuisine. — Diwan Manna
The best part is how they have retained the old-world charm and of course Raagini’s poster. The shift is more of a personal loss for me as it was here that I dreamt of opening my chain. — S Sundaram

Driving force
A popular joke is making rounds in the male friend circle - Girl to a boy: What kind of laptop do you have. Boy: 14 inches, 2 intel core processor, optional 1080 power full HD display. Boy: Which laptop do you have? Girl: Pink wala!
There is no harm in selecting a pink laptop given the fact that a good number of women make most of their selections on the basis of colour! So when we mention cars and criteria for selection, we are provided with the most interesting details. “It should be feminine-looking; bright coloured, maybe bloody red or sinful black; have comfortable seating, effective air-conditioning and one that can be parked easily.” Did we remotely hear them say torque, engine capacity or even model type! Never mind, we come straight to the point. What do women look for while buying cars - is it just the colour or something more and do car companies actually keep women in mind while designing cars? Do they? We wonder! Sukrit Kapoor, 34, who runs her own designer boutique in Mohali, picked up a Maruti Swift six months back. She says, “This is a very girlie car. I can’t define, but it has something very girlish about it. It is not too big like an SUV and not like a simple model; it is decent, offers nice space and looks good.” Do we get someone to say something beyond looks! Dr Paradeep Rakhra, medical practitioner from Mohali, drives a Safari and she is absolutely comfortable with the machine. “I always had a liking for SUV’s; Safari falls aptly in the slot I created in ‘my kind of cars’. I selected this model because it has a powerful engine and good ground clearance. Besides I like to take my family out for long trips, so this machine is just ideal for it.” Thankfully, someone talks of machines more than colour! All said and done, styling is one thing that women gravitate towards. In fact, according to an online website on automobiles (road and travel.com) some women are attracted to so-called ‘masculine’ designs, but most gravitate toward vehicles with softer curves. Cars from Asian automakers tend to have styling that’s much gentler and less aggressive. Eight out of the 10 models driven primarily by women are from Asian manufacturers. When it comes to gentler models that have all elements of an SUV, the ‘oh-so-sweet’ brigade has zeroed in on Maruti Ertiga. It is coming across as an attractive option for women who like things other than colours. Kiranjot Bakshi, executive director with Spin Wool, picked up an Ertiga recently. “Do you really think women are still stuck with pink colour,” she laughs, “they have much more on their mind like fuel efficiency, mileage and safety features.” A machine that scores well on all dimensions gets a thumbs up here!
Add on
Salil Mehan, director Autopace Network Pvt Ltd, is also of the opinion that women look for specific features in cars. “Ertiga is a hi-end 5+2 seater from Maruti scores in comfort, and comes with power windows, electronic power steering; steering mounted audio controls, electronically adjustable ORVMs, heating with blowers for the second row of seats as well.” |
Agent Vinod was never a dream project: Saif Ali Khan
Actor Saif Ali Khan, whose debut home production Agent Vinod failed to create magic at the Box Office, says he never considered the film as his dream project.
The 41-year-old star was riding high on his solo project before its release, which also starred real-life girlfriend Kareena Kapoor. “To be honest I didn’t really look at Agent Vinod as a dream or anything. It was a film which came with a lot of intellectual ideas. I wanted to bring a new facet of the actor in me which has played quite a few comic and romantic characters in the past. “The idea was to play a hero of a different kind and produce a quality product. That’s the kind of offering I wanted to come with,” said Saif. The actor, who has signed three films - Race 2, Cocktail and Judwaa 2, feels this is an exciting period in his career as he has many interesting projects in his hands. “These are exciting times and there are quite a few interesting films that I would be kick-starting soon. Race 2 is turning out well and with Abbas-Mustan at the helm of affairs, it is going to be a stylish and fun affair. “Then there is Judwaa 2 which is going to be quite a challenge as it gets me into an altogether different zone when compared to some of the films that I have done in the recent past. However, after letting my hair down in Pungi, I am confident that the audience will accept a different side of me,” Saif said. Judwaa 2 is a sequel to the Salman Khan-starrer 1997 film.

Direction my final destination: John Abraham
Actor John Abraham, whose first production Vicky Donor is receiving a positive feedback from all quarters, is now planning to try his hand at direction.
“If god wishes, I’ll turn director three years down the line. That is my final destination and I will definitely do it,” the 39-year-old said. John, who cast Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam in Vicky Donor, already has his plans as a producer in place. “I am doing a dark comedy under my production with Kunal Roy Kapoor. It will be directed by Aditya Bhattacharya, who had made Raakh (1989) with Aamir Khan. Kunal plays the lead in the film and I would be there as a supporting actor,” said John. “Then there is Jaafna with Shoojit Sircar, and then we will make another film with Ayushmann called Hamara Bajaj. It’s a beautiful film,” he added. On the acting front, the handsome hunk is busy shooting for “I, Me aur Main”, which also features Chitrangada Singh and Prachi Desai. But John’s most awaited project this year is Shootout at Wadala, where he plays gangster Manya Surve. — IANS

Mirror motivation
Gone are the days when Shah Rukh Khan would sport the same look, irrespective of whether he was playing the romantic Raj in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge or the depressed Devdas.
Experimenting with looks is the in-thing and Bollywood actors have begun going to great lengths to get the skin of their characters. Salman Khan toned his body further and added a moustache for Dabangg. Akshay Kumar will follow suit playing a policeman in Rowdy Rathore. Aamir Khan actually grew a moustache to fit into the cop’s role in Talaash. And as if these are not enough, Bollywood has a new chameleon now. Sachiin Joshi, whose debut film Aazaan stunned the industry with its amazing action and production values last year and even bagged a Stardust Award for it, is pulling all stops to play a quirky cop in his next film Mumbai Mirror. To begin with, just like Aamir, the actor is growing a stylish moustache for it, instead of going for a
fake one. “Having the perfect look goes a long way in making the character look authentic. Its amazing,
the way Aamir manages to change his look to suit his character in almost every movie he does,” remarks Sachiin. But the newbie is not just stopping at a facial change! Just as Aamir did for his other film Ghajini, Sachiin is undergoing rigorous physical training, with his trainer having put him on a strict diet regimen too. Having lost a lot of kilos and toned up his body, the Aazaan star aspires to look every bit of the tough but whimsical cop he portrays in Mumbai Mirror. Directed by Ankush Bhatt, of Bhindi Bazaar Inc. fame, the movie mirrors the Mumbai underbelly and revolves around the nexus between powerful corrupt dance bar lords and the Mumbai Police.

Know the fact file
These few are a frequently asked questions that yoga practitioners come up with most often. Here’s providing answers to them. Anil Juneja Q. What is the difference between power yoga and regular yoga? A. Power yoga is the vigorous fitness based version of regular style yoga which uses more creative sequences and series of poses in a rhythmic pace while synchronizing breathing techniques to each movement. Power yoga is likely to appeal to people who are already quite fit, enjoy exercising and want a minimal amount of chanting and meditation in their yoga class. Regular yoga is a slow way of working out on body and mind which eases the tension. One doesn’t experience fatigue in muscles and joints. It also calms the mind and promotes harmony between your body and mind. It can be practiced for people of all ages. Q. Can people who aren’t very flexible practice yoga? A. Yes, then it becomes necessary to practice yoga if you are not flexible because yoga is the easiest and safest way to gain flexibility. Start practicing yoga and in a very short period of time, yoga practice will loosen up your tight muscles and will also give you plenty of other health benefits. Q. Should women do yoga during mensuration? A. It is very important that women should listen to their bodies during this time because every woman has different experiences during the menstruation period. You can practice yoga if you think you will enjoy it but it is suggested that inverted poses, extended holding of any pose and difficult backbends, twists, arm balances that put a lot of stress on the abdominal and pelvic region should be avoided. But if your cycle is not regular, Then you should avoid practicing yoga because it’s the body’s way of sending a message that you need to relax. Q. How many times in a week should one practice power yoga to get results? A. If you try power yoga session once a week even then you can feel the health benefits of it. But For optimal results in gaining flexibility and losing weight, consistency is the key to success. So 4 to 5 sessions per week can help you to achieve your targets. Q. Why Power Yoga shouldn’t be practiced more than 5 times a week? A. More is not necessarily better. Power yoga is a high-intensity workout and our body needs rest after 4 to 5 days of high-intensity workout. Over practice can cause chronic fatigue, muscle soreness or damage and pain in the body. So take rest at least 2 to 3 days a week and give your body a chance to recover. Q. How long should one hold a yoga pose? A. Yoga pose should be held as long as it is comfortable and does not cause any pain or discomfort. Each time you practice a pose, try to slightly increase the duration. While practicing yoga poses, it is very important to avoid forcing your body. Duration of the hold can also vary from pose to pose as well as depending on the fitness level of the practitioner. Q. Can yoga cure diseases? A. Yes, Yoga can cure diseases. It is an ancient healing technique which has therapeutic values. This art of healing is an excellent choice for those who need something gentle yet effective for creating the body’s actress. Even if someone is not able to sit on the floor he/she can practice it while sitting on the chair also. Q. Can power yoga build muscles? A. Yes, Power yoga can build lean muscles but it does not build huge muscles like weight training. Power yoga workout tones and stretches the muscles at the same time it builds strength, stamina and lean muscles. Q. How is it possible to build muscles with power yoga without using weights? A. It is possible because while practicing power yoga, we put our body in different positions and these positions can only be held with the control and support of our muscles. So we will be using our own body weight to build lean muscles. (Juneja is a Chandigarh based Yoga expert) |

Chatter box
The beautiful Daljit Kaur Bhanot had taken a break from TV after marriage to Shaleen Bhanot. She returned as the differently-abled but lively Anjali in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. Daljit gets candid about her hit show and her role.
What are the reactions
you have been receiving for the role? I have been getting an amazing response from friends, family and fans. Many people have said that no one else could have played Anjali as well as I do. Another compliment is that Anjali gives people a reason to smile. How is it working with the team of the show? Our team is full of young people, so we have a lot of fun on the sets. I want to thank our directors for giving us so much creative freedom. They allow us to offer suggestions about how scenes should be enacted. I am so engrossed in my role that I am living my character Anjali. Share some memorable off-screen moments… The star of the show is our goat Laxmi. She is the one who gets pampered the most. In fact, we complain that we don’t get enough half the attention (laughs). Laxmi has her own customised clothes, shoes and accessories. You have to see her to believe how adorable she is. She sleeps in our lap like pet dogs and cats. Every moment spent with her is memorable. Why did you choose Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? I have worked in Santaan, Choona Hai Aasman and Nach Baliye on Star Plus and now Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. I loved the role of Anjali who is an ideal bahu, religious and bubbly. Khushi (Sanaya Irani) represents the young generation and the issues they face. I enjoyed a good luxurious holiday after marriage and had been looking for a good role since the past few months. I did not like the kind of offers I was getting but the role of Anjali in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon is different. Anjali
is physically challenged but she is full of life. She does not seek sympathy and is in fact the biggest strength of her family. How did you spend your break? This has been the best break of my life. I had dreamt of marrying Shaleen and when it came true, I just wanted to spend time with him and get to know my new family well. We had to wait for seven months before we could go on a honeymoon because Shaleen was busy with Do Hanson Ka Joda, but the wait was worth it. When can we expect to see Shaleen and you together onscreen? In fact, we recently got
a call from someone who wants to see us together on-screen but I can’t reveal anything else. Let’s see how it turns out as
I am open to anything interesting and would love to work with my husband again.

The heat is on
The competition now seems to be heating up between the champions and challengers on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar 2. This weekend the show witnessed the immense rivalry between Champion Akanksha and Challenger Sonia. While Sonia has a strong grip on Sufi songs, Akanksha has proved her versatility in romantic Bollywood songs. In fierce competition to grab the champions’ position, Sonia asked Akansha to sing a Sufi Song which does not belong to her genre. Instantly Akansha also asked Sonia to sing Lataji’s any light music song which is not her genre. It seems that they have sincerely followed Mika’s lessons of bhaigiri from last episode. But what happens when the two throw an open challenge to sing the songs that do not belong to their genre? Who will win this challenge—Sonia or Akansha? Watch Akansha and Sonia on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar Season 2 this Saturday on April 21 at 9 pm on Star Plus.
