Cut to words
Creativity is a rare gift. It flows, seeps into everything that a creative person does. Here are a few designer-turned-authors who are a living example
Ashima Batish

BOOK WORTH: Wendell Rodricks Alexander Mc Queen: Savage Beauty lies in a quiet corner of The Browser, Sector 8; a corner not frequented by most who visit the place because it houses books on fashion. Those who do reach the corner get intrigued by the huge hologram on the cover of the book; routine or usual doesn’t go with anything that has to do with the couturier. Not even a book!

A few more occupying space on the shelf are Teenage Fashion: Gate to Millenium 2000, India Fashion by Hindol Sengupta, The Fashion Book (Phaidon Press), Encyclopedia of Fashion Accessories by Phyllis Tortora — each archiving fashion or life of fashion designers.

Our very own Wendell Rodricks wrote a book recently, Moda Goa: History and Style. The title explains what the book is all about. “I chose history of the Goan costume as the subject because it has not been researched ever or approached as a topic for a book. It took me eleven years to document this book,” says the designer. It also took him many hours in libraries and research centres, over five hundred books, internship at museums in New York and Lisbon, and a sabbatical of six months from work.

Writing a book on fashion is a serious business for sure; one wrong fact can fetch criticism or misguide aspiring fashion designers. For designer Renyu Tandon, a book explains the ideology of a designer better, “because designers have to use craftsmen to give tangible shape to their thoughts. Books make for a direct medium.”

Photo: Manoj MahajanDesigner label Christian Dior has come up with five books in the last two years. They are planning to add three more this year. Assouline is the publisher and Patrick Demarchelier is the photographer for Dior. “The quality standards of the designer house are maintained even when it comes to producing literature,” says Kalyani Chawla, vice-president, Christian Dior, India. And it’s true when she says that books from Dior are becoming a collectors’ item.

“These are all table top books, very pictorial and have information about the latest designs from the house”. And one book that’s creating a lot of curiosity is Stars En Dior that features Hollywood stars from yesteryears like Marlene Dietrich, Sophia Loren to the present ones such as Natalie Portman and Charlize Theron in Dior creations at different points of time. The book is published by Rizzoli.

JJ Valaya, before beginning his twentieth year in the industry, compiled a few of his experiences in his photography book, Decoded Paradox. And visual medium once again proves better than theory. Two books helped Pallavi Jaipur come up with a fall winter collection and make a debut at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in February. The name of the collection is Kitch-di, which is inspired by traditional crafts and colours of Rajasthan. “Haute Couture Embroidery: The Art Of Lesage by Palmer White and Costume Textiles and Jewellery of India—Traditions of Rajasthan, gave me a good insight into the embroidery patterns of Rajasthan. The first book taught me how to use patterns well.”

Pallavi maintains that while picking up a particular theme for a collection, in-depth research is imperative. “There is always a risk of missing out on minute details if a designer hasn’t studied the subject well. The literature on fashion helps you grasp these details.”

Only at times does knowledge come at a high price! Ritu Beri’s much-talked about book costing Rs 1 lakh, Firefly—A Fairytale, highlights the similarities between various cultures and other creative aspects like architecture, history, photography and refined art. Fashion leads to literature, once again. And literature in turn leads to fashion, the reason why Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty is often picked up by youngsters studying fashion!

A beginner’s diary
Imran Zahid from Bokaro is all-eager to play a narcotic sleuth in Bhatt camp’s upcoming venture Jism 2
Ashima Batish

ACT ONE: imran Zahid Almost a month ago, Pooja Bhatt tweeted, “A small town boy from Bokaro has arrived.” Tweeple started googling the ‘boy’ in question. The results popped up a name — Imran Zahid from Bokaro. His other credentials, besides his background, are that he played the role of Muntadher al-Zaidi — the man who initiated the shoe-flinging incident around the world with George Bush — in Mahesh Bhatt’s very popular play The Last Salute.

But Pooja’s tweet was for something more eventful, something that would bring Imran on the map of Bollywood and something that meant his true arrival. Imran will be seen playing the role of a narcotic sleuth in Bhatt camp’s much-talked about venture Jism 2.

Till now, Jism 2 has only been about the super-erotic poster of Sunny Leone covered in a sheer white sheet. Nothing else is being talked about. Not even the lead actors — Arunoday Singh or Randeep Hooda. But that doesn’t dampen the spirits of the upcoming actor — Imran, “The film has been able to create the right buzz. Even if it is for Sunny Leone, I am sure that once the audience will see the film, they will have much more to appreciate.” For that matter, he is confident about his role.

His journey in the glamour world has taken another step, as he has bagged the lead role in director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar’s next flick Marksheet, inspired by Ranjit Don. Playing another real life character after Muntadher al-Zaidi, he says for an actor nothing can get more challenging: “An actor has a lot of freedom when he has to play a fictional character but when it is otherwise, he has to adapt to mannerisms and body language of the personality in question.”

Bhatt’s reference of his arrival was also in context to Chandu, in which he will play the title role, again based on the life of a JNU student leader. “Getting substantial roles in the very beginning of the career will help me prove my acting capabilities. Looking good on screen is one thing but far more important are performances.”

Face off
Pictures on social networking sites are a great way to connect visually, but are we getting overboard with what we are sharing? We dig in…
Manpriya Singh

A picture is worth a thousand words. A picture is a fact. What you see is what you get-even in an era of Photoshop and Facebook! Was it an accidental bump into a not-so — printable photograph of an acquaintance, or was it one of the most obvious recent studies on social networking sites saying that friends judge each other by the kind of pictures they see of each other posted in their accounts, which brings us to this topic? That’s bang on the point, err…besides the point!

“I have seen people post pictures that do not make any sense, are irrelevant and totally out of context,” Sheena Makkar, B.A student, GCG, fumes over her friends accounts. “I recently came across this causal friend of mine who had posted on Facebook the picture of how his bedroom was decorated before his wedding night. Are you a celebrity? Is anybody even interested?”

We’ve all heard of weird status messages announcing tiny little things, minute details — how’s the day progressing, what did you have for meal, how you are feeling, the Monday blues, the Saturday thrills and the in-between chills and pills.

Subjecting one and all to visual delights is what gets to most of the people. Laughs Anmol Dhingra, CA student, “I had this junior in school, who pictured his room and put a picture of himself with his new LED television set. I think it was hilarious for everyone who saw and immature on the part of him. Then there’s another friend of mine who put it out in the open her boyfriend giving her cuddles.” He adds, “Then follow the comments professing undying love for each other. I mean if you love each other, tell each other. Why the entire world? It’s more of a race for getting more comments and likes.” We bet many would share his sentiment!

It was all fine till the anniversaries, the never-ending birthdays or the uncontrollable joy over baby boys; occasionally some had the itch to announce having ultimately found a life partner, but the fact that you post your first fight, has many a soul baffled. Says Kanika Sukhija, BSC student, Landran, “One of my friend’s sister actually posted pictures of how she and her boyfriend made up after their first fight. That’s ridiculous.”

There have always been the likes of those bragging about the rare breeds domesticated, ostentatious house bashes; trips taken across the globe, access to some rare parties, a chance meeting with a celebrity, but that’s about it. Recalls Raahat Suri, MBA student, ICAII, “I know this guy who photo-edited his picture and pasted it on the cover of a lifestyle magazine.”

Then there’s a whole community of people who consider self-clicked pictures in the room in fancy dresses a social networking faux pas; figure in between a plethora of unprintable responses. Sums up Sheena, “The real test before pasting any picture is that is it something you genuinely want to share with your friends? And is it something that people would be interested in?” Whatever the way, stay connected.

Revisiting the nineties

Anushka Sharma sports a Rina Dhaka creation

A model flaunts one of Rina’s designs
A model flaunts one of Rina’s designs

Rina Dhaka needs no introduction. Fifteen years in the fashion industry, innumerable shows across the world and the designer still is ruling the fashion scene from the top slot. Here is a forecast from the designer herself. And these are some tips no fashionista can afford to miss!

What’s in

The season will see the return of the fashion of nineties. A lot of experimentation will be done with skirts. Structures will be simple yet elegant. Denims will be partially replaced by coloured trousers. A lot of emphasis will be laid on the waist. We will see detailing in terms of belts, sequins or other embellishments around the slim area to highlight it further. Only go in for cotton when it comes to fabrics.

What’s out

Cowl neck was really in last season, but this time it’s not. Any complicated silhouettes result in uneasiness. Simple cuts will make everything else take a backseat. Colour count: A mix of whites and bright colours will be once again a hit this season. Ensure that you have at least three different outfits in various hues of orange. Navy blue, though not a very summery colour, is in this time. Use a lot of colours together to make the most of the summer season. Pastels make for the safe choice.

News makers

Sarah Burton of the Alexander Mc Queen tops it for what she made for Kate Middleton. Nicolas Ghesquière, the creative director for the house of Balenciaga owned by the Gucci Group, is an inspiration for all. And Sophia Kokosalaki is another fantastic designer I look upon.

Party couture

Nothing will work better than a short orange dress this season. Orange is big this season, just make sure you don’t overdo it using a lot of bling.

Indian fashion fraternity

We are doing pretty well for a twenty-year old industry. The need of the hour is to keep up with the pace of the international market. As for the industry, there is still someway to go before we feel that we have arrived. The important thing is that we come up with original ideas, try to match up to the pricing of creations by international designers and not lose focus.

Par Excellence
The Pull-Slice
Jesse Grewal

The Pull-slice is a shot which starts to the left (in right handed players) and then curves to the right. The first part which is the ball starting left is caused by the path of the club being from outside the target line to inside through impact. This results in divots being deep and pointing left. When the club comes from out to in it comes down on a steep path leading to a lot of back spin and loss of distance.

When the path is from out-to-in, the club face will be open to the path even if it is square to the target line. This leads to the ball getting a left to right side spin which is a slice. The path of the club is controlled by the work of the arms and the body. The following faults could lead to ‘pulled’ shots.

If the backswing is inside or below the plane (picture 1) which is a line drawn through the shaft of the club it will tend to come from the outside or above the plane on the down swing. This re-route of the arms swing causes ‘pulled’ shots. During a correct backswing the club should be in line with the hands when parallel to the ground (picture 2) or could be outside the hands but never inside. This will promote the club coming from inside on the down swing.

The back swing starts with the arms which takes the club inside and brings it from outside. A correct take away with the shoulders promotes a correct plane of the back swing.

The take away is very quick, also causing the club to either move inside or too vertical. This can only happen if the right side of the body or the hands are over active. A good back swing begins with the left shoulder and the right side of the body resists this turning action creating a powerful coil of the body.

The first move of the down swing is with the arms and shoulders throwing the club outside the plane causing ‘pulled’ shots. The hips should turn first at the top of the back swing and the arms should drop with gravity. These two moves bring the club in to a correct inside to square to inside path.

Improve your path and the work of the club face to eliminate the slice.

Watermelon wonders!
Kandla Nijhowne

Readers, get ready! The watermelon invasion that is now round the corner. Cooling, colourful and juicy, watermelons make summer worth waiting for! Unlike mangoes, there’s no tag attached to them of excess calories. Trouble begins when you slice open a large fellow and find him lacking sweetness!

For every problem, there has to be a solution. Let me share how I salvage a great treat out of that huge mound of watermelon. I turn it into a granita which can be sweetened to a desirable level. I serve it out of halved, scooped mausambi skins, garnished with tiny black currants. It is like handing around miniature versions of half melons!

Method

  • Using an electric-blender, puree the fruit cubes, lemon juice and a cup of sugar.
  • Taste the puree and add more sugar if needed.
  • Pour into a saucepan and cook over high heat.
  • Remove after 4-5 minutes and strain through a coarse sieve. This helps retain some texture in the resulting liquid.
  • Cool, then pour the mixture into ice-trays and freeze.
  • Every 30 minutes, rake through with a fork to break up the large ice crystals.
  • Continue the process 3-4 times till all the mixture has frozen into a slush like mass. This could take 2-3 hours.
  • Halve the mausambis, cleanly remove the fruit segments and keep the hollowed cups in the fridge.
  • Use an ice cream scoop to scrape away the gran-ita into the waiting mausambi cups or any other bowls.
  • Garnish with mint and currants and serve.

  • 1-1½ cup sugar
  • Mint sprigs for garnish
  • 3-4 ‘mausambis’ for serving (optional)
  • Dark raisins or currants for garnish (optional)

it’s rocking
Soulful melody

The upcoming crime thriller movie Jannat 2, starring Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta, which is a sequel to Jannat has an average music album but the Sufi track Tu Hi Mera shines out. It is sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali and is peppered by beats that you might have heard before. Pritam has played safe enough and produced a regular Sufi number but has managed to get a good position on the music charts.

Sufi sound

It is quite a romantic track with breezy lyrics. As it is inspired by the Sufi genre it is a melodious and hummable one. The vocal by Shafqat Amanat Ali are just so perfect.

Ramneek Sandhu, law student, PU

Visual appeal

The song is very soothing and soulful but is quite similar to Ishq Sufiana from the movie The Dirty Picture. The video is very beautifully made with love flowing all over.

Mehak Sahni, student, GGDSD College

Sweet tune

Although a slow track, it is definitely soothing to the ears especially when you’re missing someone very close to your heart. The lyrics by Sayeed are meaningful and Shafqat’s voice makes it even more powerful.

Singer Courtney Love has apologised to daughter Frances Bean Cobain after she angered her by claiming that Kurt Cobain’s former bandmate Dave Grohl hit Bean. “Bean, sorry I believed the gossip. Mommy loves you,” she tweeted Saturday.

“While I’m generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn. I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I’m in a monogamous relationship and very happy,” Frances said, answering her mother’s earlier accusations.

“The claims were offensive and absolutely untrue,” said Grohl.

Taking it easy

Actress Jennifer Garner is in no rush to lose baby weight after giving birth to son Samuel in February. “Jennifer has had a yoga instructor at the house a couple of times, but she’s not throwing herself into a hardcore gym routine yet,” a source told a publication.

“She does feel she’s gained more weight this time around, because she was so busy with the girls that she found herself not eating healthily. But she hasn’t had time to really think about it.

“Still being in her maternity wear is her motivation, but it’s only been a few weeks — it’s just not a priority right now,” the source added.

Garner already has daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3, with husband Ben Affleck. — IANS

Only the Khans and Kapoors that are paid well in this industry: Raghubir Yadav

Role vs money: Raghubir Yadav Bollywood stars have always made news with their hefty remuneration but veteran actor Raghubir Yadav says not all are paid that great. Raghubir, who has been in the industry for more than two decades and has worked in hits like Peepli Live and Lagaan, said it is only the Khans and Kapoors that are paid well in this industry.

“We are paid really less. The money we get is only enough to manage our day to day expenses. What will we get when everything is paid to the stars? And neither can we demand because what we want is a good role, so either we take the role or demand money... Asking for both doesn’t apply to us,” Raghubir said in an interview.

The actor became a household name with comedy TV show Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne and established himself as a character actor in films like Bandit Queen, Dil Se and Water.

Raghubir will soon be seen in debutante Gitanjali Sinha’s Yeh Khula Aasmaan, where he is portraying the role of a grandfather.

He says that it was easy for him to play an old man as he has spent a lot of time with elderly people during his theatre days.

“I have spent a lot of time with elderly people during my theatre days and I enjoy spending time with them... They have a lot of experience in life and the things they talk about and the advices they give reflect that. — PTI

Urvashi in sheer bliss

Happy girl: Urvashi Sharma Actress Urvashi Sharma, who tied the knot with Aazaan actor Sachiin Joshi in February, says marriage is the best thing to have happened to her. The 31-year-old actress, who made her Bollywood debut with Naqaab in 2009, says marrying the entrepreneur-turned-actor has made her life much easy and secure.

“I am feeling very secure in life and I don’t have to go to sleep thinking how would tomorrow look like. I guess I can transfer all my worries to Sachiin and just enjoy this phase.

For a married woman, it is sheer bliss to look forward to all the goodies that life has to offer to you. Marriage is indeed the best thing to have happened to me,” Urvashi said. Though the duo actually got married early February, it is only now that they have made it public.

“It was Sachiin’s idea to make all announcements when the time was right. Even when our marriage was kept as a personal affair, he took care of my immediate family and friends who were here for event,” she said.

The actress decided to settle down at a time when many of her contemporaries are still waiting in the wings and repeatedly trying to make it big as an actress and Urvashi says she has no regrets about it.

“I wanted to get married at the right time, have babies and raise a family. I am ambitious but not at the cost of not living my own personal life. I am not a confused individual who will spend all her time thinking what’s best for me and in the process lose out on precious years,” she added.

Asked if she will bid adieu to films, she said, “That’s a call which would be taken by Sachiin. I have no qualms in admitting that I would rather have his consent before stepping into films. — PTI

Candid confessions

As actors spend most of their time shooting, they naturally become friends with their co-stars. But despite the fact that they enjoy each other’s company, there are still some things that they don’t like about their co-stars. We quiz these actors on what they don’t like about their co-stars…

Aishwarya Sakuja on Ravi Dubey

I like that he is so devoted and passionate about his work. Even if it’s a three line dialogue, he will make sure that I will practice with him so that we deliver the best shot. I hate it when that every time, we are doing an intimate scene, he ends up spitting on my face while talking. (Laughs)

Ragini Khanna on Jai Soni

He always keeps doing masti on the sets. We keep the mood very light all the time. His pranks always lighten up the entire unit. But I hate that sometimes he goes overboard. You are not always in a mood to joking. I remember once, I was not keeping well and he slapped me on my shoulder.

Pratyusha Banerjee on Shashank

He is a very hard-working, friendly and mature person. He helps everyone on the sets and he is a very close friend of mine. I don’t like it when he gets angry because he takes it out all on me. Even if it’s because of someone else. And then, you have tell him, “Calm down, Shashank. Calm down!”

Shaheer Sheikh on Soumya Seth

I like it that she is very natural when it comes to acting. She doesn’t have to overdo acting, she is a born actor. I guess the only quality I don’t like about her is sometimes, she makes me work even harder. But I know that’s for my better.

Barun Sobti on Sanaya Irani

She is sweet and honest about her work. Moreover, I really like that she enjoys her work. So automatically, it becomes easier for you to work with such people. We have been working together for quite some time now. But there hasn’t been even a single incident that made me dislike Sanaya for any reason. We bond well on the sets. She encourages me to act well and give my best at work. She is a great co-worker.

Today is an excellent day for you. It’s a perfect day to enjoy the company of friends. You’re extremely flirtatious today. Seek out somebody who has the gift of gab. They’ll love exchanging playful remarks with you. It’s important to take your creative impulses seriously. There’s nothing silly about wanting to work with paint, paper or clay.

Devoting a few minutes each day to art can be very therapeutic. Emotional problems will be the biggest barrier in relationships. Encourage young people to talk about their worries and problems now. Introduce romance in your life and spend quality time with a special someone. A little imagination will go a long way and produce the desired results when it comes to a creative project.

You are fantastically creative right now. Try writing down all your feelings in your journal. It can be inspirational. Don’t be discouraged if your efforts to be a good role model aren’t paying off. Someone close needs your guidance and understanding, so just be your self even if it feels like wasted efforts.

Others may show their loving sides easily and without strings attached. You too can be this frank about what you feel and others may intuitively know how to respond to you. If you’ve been coping with certain physical difficulties, you may want to research alternative healing techniques on the Internet. You really admire somebody who is hardworking and efficient. This person makes your life so much easier. This is not a good time to approach influential people with your creative ideas and strategies. Your insights are very good. Save money on necessity items by researching before spending. Vehicle, repairs and travel expenses are likely.

A slow rise in expenses and overheads is possible. You need to be careful or it could damage your interest in the long term. Income will be good but still below expectations. Investment should be strictly avoided. You need to take adequate rest. Remember, a sound health requires a good physical and mental condition.

BinduA vamp, a character actress, a stern mother-in-law, a bold dancer, a singer, Bindu (April 17, 1951) celebrates her birthday with you. She appeared with Anpadh in 1962 . But the real meaty and negative role came her way with Do Raaste the movie that type-cast her as a vamp in Kati Patang. She has acted in over 160 movies in a career that spanned from 1962 to the 2004 hit Main Hoon Na. Bindu leads a low-profile life and makes fewer on-screen appearances, like the one in Shola Aur Shabnam which brought to the forefront her comic trait. She followed this with her light and funny performances in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Main Hoon Na, and Om Shanti Om. Bindu should take care of her weight gain in 2012-13.
