Administration takes steps to prevent spread of cholera
Fatehgarh Sahib. April 11 He has directed the Civil Surgeon to establish medical inspection posts to check and prevent the spread of cholera in the district. Medical Officers deputed at these inspection posts have been asked to check all patients suspected of suffering from cholera. Officials have also been ordered to seize all food items unfit for human consumption and to prosecute the defaulters within their respective areas.The orders will remain in force till December 31. |

5 kg opium seized near Ambala rly station
Ambala, April 11 Naresh Kumar, the incharge of detective staff, told that the police had received a tip off that a large quantity of opium would reach Ambala Cantonment by train. Acting on the tip off, the police set up a check post near the railway station. When Vijay Kumar was approaching the main road, he was stopped and searched by the police and 5 kg of opium was recovered from his bag. During interrogation, Vijay Kumar said that that the opium was to be supplied in Punjab, the police informed. Vijay Kumar was produced in a local court today and remanded to police custody till April 18. It is noteworthy that the Ambala cantonment is increasingly becoming the transit station for drug and country-made arms smugglers. They break their journey at Ambala and supply these items to various parts of Punjab. During last two years, a large quantity of opium, charas and country-made pistols have been recovered from the railway passengers coming from Bihar, UP and
Uttarakhand. |

Eye donation camp
Dera Bassi, April 11 Dr Saruchi, senior resident from PGI, was the resource person. Amarjeet and Amarpal, technical assistants from the advanced eye center, PGI were also present on the occasion. The guests were welcomed by Dr Puneet Kooner and Monika Arora. The function was started by the college prayer. Dr Saruchi discussed various aspects associated with eye donation. She informed that the while number of eyes donated each year in India is 20000, Chandigarh’s share in it was only 300. She also cleared the doubts related to eye donation and motivated everyone present to donate eyes. Several students present on the occasion pledged to donate their eyes.

Hospital employee murder case cracked
Banur, April 11 Police have arrested Amrik Singh, resident of Jhoormajra village, and Gurpiarpal Singh, resident of Jangpura village, who were employed in the Gian Sagar Hospital with the victim. Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Charbar Nangal village and an employee of Giansagar Hospital, was found murdered near Dharmgarh village on April 9. SP Manmohan Sharma and SHO Gurjeet Singh told here that the mobile phone found from the site of crime and the CCTV camera footage installed at the gate of the hospital proved helpful in nabbing the accused. Illicit relations between the accused are reported to be the reason behind the murder.

Labourer dies in hit-and-run case
Zirakpur, April 11 Two commit suicide
Two persons, including a girl, allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances at two separate residential colonies of Zirakpur, here this morning. In the first incident, Satish Kumar (32), living at Ravindra Enclave, Baltana, was found hanging with a dupatta from the hook of a ceiling fan, the police said. The family members told the police that he was suffering from depression for the last few days. The body of the deceased was handed over to family after postmortem. In another incident, Jasvir Kaur alias Nandni (26), a resident of AKS Colony, Zirakpur, was allegedly found hanging under mysterious circumstances, here today. The police said that the body was found hanging with a duppata. The police said that Nandni was mentally upset and was a diabetic patient. The body has been kept at Dera Bassi hospital and started further investigations in this case, the police official added. |

Man stabbed in Dhanas
Chandigarh, April 11 The police has arrested the accused. Sansuddin was sitting near the bank of the lake in Dhanas and fishing when Sandeep approached him. A heated scuffle ensued and Sandeep then stabbed him in the stomach. The victim was admitted to the PGI in a critical state. A case of attempt to murder was registered at the Sector 11 police station. Five held for illegal mining DERA BASSI: The police has booked five persons in connection with illegal mining. The police had conducted a raid near Bohari village in Ghaggar river and arrested the accused, identified as Rasem, Balwinder, Amrit, Gurpreet Singh and Jasbir Singh. A case under Section 379 IPC has been registered against the accused. |

Chandigarh, April 11 The Kings XI team will face the Pune Warriors in their first home ground match to be held tomorrow at PCA (Punjab Cricket Stadium), Mohali. The team has lost two matches so far and the fans of the team expect to make a come back tomorrow. Both the teams went for net practising today. The Punjab team opted for an optional training with players like Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar skipping the session. The Pune team went through a proper practice session. Wrestling tournament on April 13
Chandigarh, April 11 The match on third day will be played in Amritsar followed by the fourth day in Jalandhar. Kartar said, "The competition between Indian and Pakistani wrestlers in 120kg weight category would be the centre of attraction." The competition will be held under men's category and there would be five weight categories of 66 kg, 74 kg, 84 kg, 96 kg and 120 kg. In women's category, there will be 59kg and 72kg weight categories. The title winners will get a cash award of Rs 1,01,000. The runners up will pocket a cash prize of Rs 51,000.
