Administration takes steps to prevent spread of cholera

Fatehgarh Sahib. April 11
Deputy Commissioner Yashveer Mahajan has issued orders under Section 2 of the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897, for taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of cholera disease within the limits of Fatehgarh Sahib district. He has directed all the Municipal Councils in the district to only supply chlorinated water. The sale of all kinds of food and drinking items, like cakes, biscuits, lassi, sharbat, cut fruits, sugar cane juice etc has been banned unless these are properly protected with wire gauze/glass against contamination from dust and flies. The sale and manufacture of ice, ice candy, mineral water and aerated water has been prohibited unless certified by the bacteriologist of Punjab government. The Deputy Ciommissioner has also ordered the closure of all factories not functioning as per the norms laid by the government.

He has directed the Civil Surgeon to establish medical inspection posts to check and prevent the spread of cholera in the district. Medical Officers deputed at these inspection posts have been asked to check all patients suspected of suffering from cholera. Officials have also been ordered to seize all food items unfit for human consumption and to prosecute the defaulters within their respective areas.The orders will remain in force till December 31.

5 kg opium seized near Ambala rly station

Ambala, April 11
The police recovered 5 kg of opium from a resident of Jharkhard near the Ambala Cantonment railway station this morning. The accused Vijay Kumar was carrying it in his bag.

Naresh Kumar, the incharge of detective staff, told that the police had received a tip off that a large quantity of opium would reach Ambala Cantonment by train. Acting on the tip off, the police set up a check post near the railway station.

When Vijay Kumar was approaching the main road, he was stopped and searched by the police and 5 kg of opium was recovered from his bag. During interrogation, Vijay Kumar said that that the opium was to be supplied in Punjab, the police informed.

Vijay Kumar was produced in a local court today and remanded to police custody till April 18.

It is noteworthy that the Ambala cantonment is increasingly becoming the transit station for drug and country-made arms smugglers. They break their journey at Ambala and supply these items to various parts of Punjab. During last two years, a large quantity of opium, charas and country-made pistols have been recovered from the railway passengers coming from Bihar, UP and Uttarakhand.

Eye donation camp

Dera Bassi, April 11
DS Gurukul College of Education for Women, Gholumajra, Derabassi, organised an eye donation camp on April 10 in the college campus.

Dr Saruchi, senior resident from PGI, was the resource person. Amarjeet

and Amarpal, technical assistants from the advanced eye center, PGI were also present on the occasion. The guests were welcomed by Dr Puneet Kooner and Monika Arora. The function was started by the college prayer. Dr Saruchi discussed various aspects associated with eye donation. She informed that the while number of eyes donated each year in India is 20000, Chandigarh’s share in it was only 300. She also cleared the doubts related to eye donation and motivated everyone present to donate eyes.

Several students present on the occasion pledged to donate their eyes. — OC

Hospital employee murder case cracked

Banur, April 11
Banur police has succeded in finding the suspects involved in the murder of Gurpreet Singh, an employee of Gian Sagar Hospital Banur. The accused were reported to be friends of the victim and were employed at the same hospital.

Police have arrested Amrik Singh, resident of Jhoormajra village, and Gurpiarpal Singh, resident of Jangpura village, who were employed in the Gian Sagar Hospital with the victim. Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Charbar Nangal village and an employee of Giansagar Hospital, was found murdered near Dharmgarh village on April 9. SP Manmohan Sharma and SHO Gurjeet Singh told here that the mobile phone found from the site of crime and the CCTV camera footage installed at the gate of the hospital proved helpful in nabbing the accused. Illicit relations between the accused are reported to be the reason behind the murder. — OC

12 teams to slug it out in cricket tourney

The 11th edition of the Dhruve Pandove Memorial T-20 Cricket Tournament was inaugurated at Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. Jagpreet Singh, principal, Punjab Public School, Nabha, presided over the opening ceremony.

Twelve teams are participating in the tournament. Those vying for the top honours includee Aitchison College, Lahore, Lawrence School Sanawar, Modern school, New Delhi, MNSS, Rai, Pinegrove School, Subathu, Scindia School, Gwalior, Vasant Valley, New Delhi, Assam Valley, Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, PPS Nabha, Mayo College Ajmer, Yadavindra Public School, Patiala.

Labourer dies in hit-and-run case

Zirakpur, April 11
An unidentified migrant labourer died after being hit by an unknown vehicle near Singhpura village on Tuesday night. He was in his forties. The police said they got the information about the incident around 2.30 am. The body of the deceased has been kept for identification at the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for 72 hours.

Two commit suicide

Two persons, including a girl, allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances at two separate residential colonies of Zirakpur, here this morning.

In the first incident, Satish Kumar (32), living at Ravindra Enclave, Baltana, was found hanging with a dupatta from the hook of a ceiling fan, the police said.

The family members told the police that he was suffering from depression for the last few days. The body of the deceased was handed over to family after postmortem.

In another incident, Jasvir Kaur alias Nandni (26), a resident of AKS Colony, Zirakpur, was allegedly found hanging under mysterious circumstances, here today.

The police said that the body was found hanging with a duppata. The police said that Nandni was mentally upset and was a diabetic patient.

The body has been kept at Dera Bassi hospital and started further investigations in this case, the police official added.

Man stabbed in Dhanas

A resident of Dhanas was stabbed by a person known to him here today.

The police has arrested the accused. Sansuddin was sitting near the bank of the lake in Dhanas and fishing when Sandeep approached him. A heated scuffle ensued and Sandeep then stabbed him in the stomach. The victim was admitted to the PGI in a critical state. A case of attempt to murder was registered at the Sector 11 police station.

Five held for illegal mining

DERA BASSI: The police has booked five persons in connection with illegal mining. The police had conducted a raid near Bohari village in Ghaggar river and arrested the accused, identified as Rasem, Balwinder, Amrit, Gurpreet Singh and Jasbir Singh. A case under Section 379 IPC has been registered against the accused.

One held with 2-kg charas

The AATS squad, along with the PCR, today arrested one person with two-kg charas. The accused was arrested during a naka laid on the road separating Sectors 55 and 56. He was on foot when he tried to evade a police party.

The accused had kept the in a plastic bag. The accused, Kalshi Shah, a resident of Jujhar Naga, Mohali, was handed over to the police.

A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Azar not to play today
Cricketer unable to be part of Kings XI Punjab due to visa issues

Captain of Kings XI Punjab today said former Pakistan cricket player Azar Mahmood is not joining the squad due to non-approval of visa. Earlier, the management of the Punjab team maintained that the player will join the squad later in the tourney as his wife is expecting a baby. During an interaction with the media, Adam Gilchrist, captain of the Punjab’s outfit said, “His arrival is now depending on the government’s action as he is not getting clearance from the authorities.” The local team is already facing a huge problem as a few foreign players are injured.

The Kings XI team will face the Pune Warriors in their first home ground match to be held tomorrow at PCA (Punjab Cricket Stadium), Mohali. The team has lost two matches so far and the fans of the team expect to make a come back tomorrow.

Both the teams went for net practising today. The Punjab team opted for an optional training with players like Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar skipping the session.

The Pune team went through a proper practice session. Former international cricketer Saurav Ganguly was also seen attending a long training session with Jalandhar lad Rahul Sharma.

Ample number of dada’s (Saurav Ganguly) fans pouring in to have a glimpse of him. “It’s good to see people like you. Your prayers are always welcomed,” said Saurav.

Wrestling tournament on April 13

The Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Wrestling Tournament will be organised on April 13 at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib in Ropar district. According to chief organizer, environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal will mark his presence on April 14.

The match on third day will be played in Amritsar followed by the fourth day in Jalandhar. Kartar said, "The competition between Indian and Pakistani wrestlers in 120kg weight category would be the centre of attraction."

The competition will be held under men's category and there would be five weight categories of 66 kg, 74 kg, 84 kg, 96 kg and 120 kg. In women's category, there will be 59kg and 72kg weight categories. The title winners will get a cash award of Rs 1,01,000.

The runners up will pocket a cash prize of Rs 51,000. The third-place wrestlers will take home Rs 25,000.

Junior golf
Viraj, Tutul get top honours

Chandigarh, April 11
Kolkata's Viraj Madappa with his decent play shot one-over for a total of three-over 147 for the third position while his counterpart Tutul Ali shared fourth place with Chandigarh's Feroz Singh Garewal at eight-over 152, behind Chandigarh's Harsh Gangwar with the score of nine-over 153 as sixth during the USHA IGU Delhi Juniors' golf in Delhi.

In the category B competition, Kolkata's Mohan Sardar score of level par 144 while Jaipur's Prakhar Asawa carded one-over for the total of one-over 145 to finish second in the field of 96.

Sardar started the day with a birdie on 1st, 12 and 14th while he shot five bogeys on 6th, 8th, 9th, 16th and 18th for 2-over. In category A Delhi's Manu Gandas scored level-par round for the total of 2-over 146 to finish on top. – TNS

100 children take part in golf camp

A one-day golf clinic and coaching camp was organised at the Panchkula Golf Club, here today. A total of 100 children from different schools of Haryana participated in the camp. The Haryana School Shiksha Pariyojna Parishad, which lies under the Rashtriya Madhyamic Shiksha Abhyan, organised the event for the class XI and X students. Three coaches were appointed to conduct the event successfully.

The children were taught nuances of the game, rules of the game, technicalities of the game, chipping, bunker shots, a brief description of the course and were given demonstrations by all the coaches so as to get a complete perspective about the game.
