In its own League
With IPL season five taking-off, here’s a quick check on what the preparations are like in the city
Jasmine Singh

Just when we thought Shah Rukh Khan should be looking for an astrologer after his over-hyped bouncer 'Ra One' turned out to be a googly, just like his team. And just when we thought we haven't seen some happening action on the cricket pitch, back in Chennai, Amitabh Bachchan danced and Priyanka Chopra quizzed the shy players at the opening of IPL 5!

It's back to the 'entertaining-sports-Bollywood-dance-song-fashion mix' IPL season five, with all its spicy and 'cheering' elements. This definitely calls for celebration and it goes without saying that the cricket frenzy country is gearing up in its own way to catch all the action. Here in Chandigarh and Punjab, where people don't need reasons to hit the pubs, paint the city red (they can do this at any given point of time) and preparations are in full swing. We get a quick check on what, where, when and how…

Eat, drink & play

While corporate employees would be searching Google for the five best excuses to take leave, youngsters in colleges and universities would grab the front seats at pubs and watch the action live on big screens. City hotels, restaurants and pubs will be putting up big screens, whipping up menu to match your cricket palate! Café Amor, Page 3, Panchkula, will be showing the live action on a big screen along with interesting packages - beer package for Rs 599, premium for Rs 999 and IMFL for Rs 599. Hops N Grains, Panchkula has introduced Bock beer, more malty and sweet, for the IPL. They have put up four big screens where you can catch up all the action. Other than this, nine pizza and four vodka shots plus two large beer pitchers would be available for Rs 1, 299. Oven Fresh, Chandigarh has come up with special IPL cakes and fitted TV sets that would show cricket wherever it is happening. The Oven Fresh-26 will give one plus one beer advantage as well.

Online action

Not everyone can get away with an excuse! The next best thing is to share the scoreboard, run rate et al on social networking sites. As many as 260 Facebook accounts from Chandigarh have been created just for the IPL. Jatin Tripathi, 28, a banker, has created a page called Chandigarh Aala Rey, and the site has already received 90 hits on the first day. "I have created a special format where cricket fans can post their gossip on the IPL teams. I will also post the interesting 'match moment' of the day on it," he says. Other than this, Connect, market leader in wire-line and broadband in Punjab, has announced its official page on Facebook. Prem Ojha, business head, Connect, says the employees would be notified about match schedules and live scores. So, now you can go to Facebook and search 'connectpunjab' to get connected. And this is not all; as many as fifteen new blogs from Chandigarh and Punjab, especially for Kings XI Punjab, have been created. Cricket KRazzzy 5, Krazey Kiya Rey, Clean Bold are some of the interesting blogs created by Panjab University students.

Farmville

Holi or New Year is not the only time when people organise farmhouse parties; this IPL you will see a huge rush at the green lawns. Harkaran Dhillon and his friends from Muktsar are throwing an IPL bash at their farmhouse near Patiala. They have invited a few television stars for the event. Says Harkaran, "This time, other than of course screening matches for my friends, I will also organise a pool party." Sehaj Singh Bhullar from Patiala will throw a farmhouse bash for his friends in Ludhiana, where he will show all Kings XI matches.

Hard-hitting stuff!
The IPL is back and so is Kings XI Punjab’s captain Adam Gilchrist. We get up, close and personal
Jasmine Singh

Back in Chandigarh, fans smile and wave when they see Adam Gilchrist. He smiles back confidently, for he knows he shoulders the responsibility of being the captain of Kings XI Punjab. Of the field we share some light moments with him.

Comfort in style

I like to wear anything that I would be comfortable in. I would randomly pick things when I am moving around. I wouldn't get stuck on brands, for I feel one should wear whatever is comfortable without blindly following styles.

On Bollywood numbers

Who doesn't like music; I like to hear all kinds of music, it a great stress-buster. I listen to Bollywood music (smiles) when I am in Mohali. Music has no boundary, like cricket it connects people.

Cooking, once in a while

I like to eat chicken tikka when I am here; though I do try my hands in the kitchen once in a while, but not always. Thankfully, my wife is a great cook, so whatever she cooks is the best.

Chandigarh is fun

I travel a lot and this is a well done-up city. Often we get a chance to move around and it is nice. The way fans treat us is even better. They are warm and always smiling.

Stress-buster

Exercise works well on the mind, body and soul. This is the best way to keep any kind of stress at bay. Light music while exercising does wonders.

Calculated leap
What makes generation leap such a popular concept on the Indian TV? We find out
Ashima Batish

It’s pretty simple. Add a few grey streaks to the hair; don a pair of glasses, replace the heavily embellished saris with pastel plain ones. As for men, the grey side burns will do. Get in the younger actors, who are as old as the original lot in the soap, and all is set for the big, gigantic, generation leap: the perfect remedy for dropping TRPs. Courtesy Ekta Kapoor, the idea of generation leap now has a history one can allude to in case one wants to know how it came into being.

Balaji telefilms initiated the concept with Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (KSBKBT), stretched it further to Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kasauti Zindagi Kay till other production houses adopted the idea to introduce viewers to great grandparents, grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren…phew, all generations boxed in one timeline. The recent one to go for the leap (by the way it for the second time) is Uttaran on Colors.

What makes generation leap such a popular concept on the Indian TV and how does a twenty-year-old feel about playing mother to an actor of the same age? Harish Verma, who plays the character of Avtaar in Naa Aana Is Des Lado (NAIDL), suddenly grew up by twenty years one day. “My co-stars were calling me uncle and I wasn’t able to convince myself with the character I was playing.” Even today, after a year of the development, he finds it difficult to play the character as effectively as he was doing before. “I was even ready to quit the show. The soap began with female foeticide as its central idea, but soon deviated from the track.”

For some actors in the industry, the challenge helps them move out of their comfort zone. It’s a chance to foray into the unseen area, which changes their lifestyle, “Not only clothes, your act also has to change, has to become more mature,” comes from Anup Soni, who plays the character of Bharron Singh in Balika Vadhu, the serial that took a leap of eight years. He found it a cakewalk when years were added to his age, “Dialogues come to your rescue. They are changed accordingly and as an actor, your job is to deliver them with apt emotions. I guess it’s not that tough a job.” But for an actor who gets introduced in the soap as a grown-up character after the soap has taken a leap, it’s certainly not easy. Jannat Zubair was replaced by Sargun Mehta in Phulwa, which recently went off air. Jannat played the character of 11-year-old Phulwa to perfection for eight months. She was immensely popular among audiences and ensuring that the popularity of the character doesn’t drop, wasn’t easy for Sargun. “I had to adopt the same personality traits of the young Phulwa. I had to convincingly play the naïve young girl grown up into a dacoit and it did create a lot of pressure.”

Generation leap has been the ultimate solution for dropping TRPs. It introduces new characters, new sub-plots and makes it easier for script-writers to develop the stories. Usually, it’s the last resort for serials as was in the case of KSBKBT and NAIDL. What else can be expected in a soap that has exhausted all the possibilities of the twists and turns in the story? The male protagonist marries the wrong girl, the female protagonist marries the wrong boy, then the wrong girl kills the wrong boy, then the male protagonist marries the right girl, then the babies get lost, swapped….the battle continues…till TRPs drop, till generation leap happens!

The blind spot

It was his idea to turn his philosophical character blind in Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein and Anupam Kher says he did so to challenge himself as an actor. The 57-year-old actor, who stars alongside Sachin Khedekar in the film about a man who is stagnated in his life and is shown the way to live by a visually impaired man, says he suggested the change in his role a minute before filming began.

“I suggested to the director that my role be turned into that of a blind man just one minute before we started shooting. I wanted to challenge myself as an actor. I felt that the man has a lot to say but I did not want it to look preachy. It’s a blind man talking about vision,” Anupam said.

The actor said that the change in his character made the film more exciting to him and also made the film’s message more profound. “We are not showing him as a fakir, he is a modern man, so beyond a certain point it would have been very boring with this man continuously talking about life and how it should be.

“The thought of him being blind turned the film upside down but it made the film’s message deeper. I thought something which doesn’t excite me will not excite the audience. Playing him as a blind man was very exciting for me,” said Anupam.

This is the second time in his career that Anupam is playing a blind man onscreen, the first being in a comedy film with Kader Khan. “Earlier I did a comedy called Hum Hai Kamal Ke with Kader saab, but that was a fun film. I had my eyes open there, in this film I am wearing glasses. It was tough because I did not get any chance to practice, even though I was brave enough to tell my director to make me a blind man. I had a very competent actor with me and the team was patient,” he said.

Anupam also added that having Khedekar as his co-star helped a lot as all his scenes are with the Astitva actor. “This film can work for Khedekar alone, but for me all my interactions are with him. It couldn’t have worked without him being the way he is as an actor. We complimented each other and also our being a friend helped in creating chemistry between us two actors.” Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein, directed by Pramod Joshi, is set to release on April 12. Anupam is busy with a number of other projects like the remake of Chashme Buddoor, Kya Super Cool Hain Hum and Special Chabbis directed by Neeraj Pandey. He is eagerly awaiting for the release of his Hollywood film Silver Lining Playbook with Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper.

“The film is slated for a November 21 release. It was a fabulous experience shooting for it. The director is Oscar nominated David Russell. It is something I am proud of.” Anupam is also a part of the ensemble star cast of Deepa Mehta’s big screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Booker-prize winning book Midnight’s Children.

“The film is almost ready, we have had a few trials, I think some post-production work is going on and by August it should be ready for release,” he said. —PTI

Of bytes and bites

Aakashdeep Saigal aka Sky is one of the most famous celebrities known for his aggressive and violent behaviour. He says his portrayal in Big Boss was false and calls Mahek Chahal and Pooja Misrra “men” due to their violent behaviour on the show. He also recommends Pooja Misrra should get psychiatric help.

Dismissing Pooja Misrra’s “love bite” allegations, Sky admits his love for Pooja Bedi and is finally ready to share his secret about their first intimate kiss. Although he finds Sunny Leone “cute”, he swears that he hasn’t seen a single clipping of her “work” on the Internet.

Go with the flow

Asin seems to be enjoying her Bollywood stint. The actor, who is enthusiastically awaiting the release of her next film, Housefull 2, where she is paired opposite Akshay Kumar says that she had great fun being part of the multi-starrer.

“I play Rishi Kapoor’s daughter in the film, who lives in London. It was fun working with Akshay, who was a superb co-star,” said the actor. When quizzed if she is following the path of the other successful actors like Sridevi, Rekha and the likes, she quipped, “I don’t have anything planned like that in mind. Sridevi is a magnificent actress and she is my neighbour as well. I don’t want to copy her as she has engraved a niche for herself. I would like to have a diverse image.”

The 5 commandments
Anushka Sharma
Being choosy: Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma has everything going for her: looks, talent and attitude. Yet, she is not your usual Bollywood star who is over-exposed. She is choosy about her films and has already won acclaim as an actress. She shares some tips on maintaining herself and her standing in Bollywood.

  1. I have good hair genetically and I take care of them by keeping them clean and oiling them and only using products that suit my hair.
  2. I don't wear make-up when I am not shooting. I only use the best products and I sleep well which reflects on my skin.
  3. I love myself and I am very comfortable in my skin so that gives me confidence. I believe I am a very real person and I am okay without the attention a star gets. That is what keeps me grounded. I am a secure person.
  4. I wear what suits me, in films and outside films. I like Indian and Western clothes and I like colours. I will wear something if I feel comfortable and confident in it.
  5. I can only work with people I respect and so far I have been lucky. I am used to taking my own decisions and I like my life. I am close to my family and my old friends. All this keeps me level-headed.

Priyanka on target

Priyanka Chopra has had professional success lately but she has been entangled in controversies. There are stories of her link-up with SRK and the isolation that followed. Apparently, several actors and producers don’t want to work with her. Her father has been unwell too and she has her music album to complete. Her friends speak in her defence while she maintains a dignified silence.

Work speaks louder

Priyanka is a very hard-working actress whom directors approach for meaty and unconventional roles. She has consciously chosen versatile and challenging roles in her career be it Fashion, Kaminey, Saat Khoon Maaf, and now Barfee. Right now, she just wants to focus on her work instead of the controversies and let her work speak for her.

Politics and movies

Priyanka’s friends feel that she is being attacked by a group of star wives. While she will be remembered for being an actor and a brand, those wives will only be remembered as wives! If they are insecure about their marriages, they should sort out issues domestically instead of blaming and ostracising her! Recently, a big filmmaker was very nice to her on the face but was later backbiting.

Silence is golden

Priyanka doesn’t announce movies on her own. She always lets the producers announce it. She is busy with films till October so it will be only in August when new films are announced. She is a very grounded girl who has maintained professional relationships in the industry and stuck with her old friends. She will get through this with grace.

A la Whitney Houston

R&B star Rihanna says she would love to play late diva Whitney Houston on screen. The 24-year-old Barbadian singer has shot down rumours she is in the running to play the late legend in a forthcoming biopic, but said that she would be honoured to take the role, reported a publication online. “I didn’t get that call yet. That would be something that I would have to give my entire life to do because I would want to really pull it off,” she said.

Rihanna also said that she was highly influenced by the tragic singer. “I love her. She is one of my big music icons, and I have always looked up to her. My first song that I remember falling in love with was a Whitney Houston song. All of her music actually was always played in my house, with Mariah Carey and Celine Dion,” she added. —PTI

If you can’t join them, beat them
Emraan Hashmi says that the team of Jannat 2 has nothing to fear... Rather it is the IPL that should fear the release of the movie

Actor Emraan Hashmi, who is back with the sequel of Jannat releasing during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season, says they are not scared to release the film during the cricket tournament.

Directed by Kunal Deshmukh, the film is a sequel to the 2008-hit film Jannat. The second installment is up for release on May 4. Even Jannat was released during the IPL season in 2008. “Last time, even Jannat was released during IPL and there was so much buzz about the tournament at that time. There was a match of Kolkata Knight Riders and we had gone to Kolkata to promote our film,” Emraan said recently at the music launch of the movie.

“That time, all the theatres were almost full... we had almost got 100 per cent opening for Jannat. We are hoping it continues for Jannat 2 as well. We are not scared of IPL...but IPL should be scared of us,” he said. Echoing similar sentiments, producer Mukesh Bhatt said, “When IPL came for the first time, we were not afraid to release our film, then why should we be afraid this time? We are sure that our film will captivate audience. Like Emraan said, IPL must be scared of us and not us.

We will storm the theatres whatever the match. Jannat 2 will be a match-wining team.” Jannat was based on betting in cricket, the sequel is about the illegal trading in arms and ammunition. Emraan plays the role of an arms dealer called Sonu Dili KKC.

“This is the most entertaining character I have played till date. In 2008, I played Arjun Dixit in Jannat and that was by far my favourite character. The character is funnier, more entertaining and has got grey shades, but he is extremely endearing,” Emraan said. Model Esha Gupta makes her debut in Bollywood with this film opposite Emraan. —PTI

Hair up-side-down!
Sweeping hair onto one side into a ponytail is the latest craze among young girls…
Sabia Talwar

Recently, Audrina Patridge, Hollywood actress and reality TV star, looked sensational in her purple sequined dress at a night club in Las Vegas, and her volumnised side ponytail just lifted up her entire persona.

Come summer and the dreadful heat, your hair need to be tied-up either in high ponytail or low ones for sure and they are pretty much the regular hair-dos. But you definitely have another choice, which looks chic and neat at the same time. Tie your hair in a side-swept ponytail! This might be an old style dating back to the 80's and many of you would have tried this in your childhood with colourful ribbons on them, but it is here to stay. The old is back with a bang where you can experiment with texturing your hair strands in a different manner. We give you a list some reasons why you should go in for these ponytails.

Side ponytails can be flaunted in daily routine as wells as at parties. Says Richa Agarwal, managing director, Cleopatra, Sector-8, Chandigarh, "These ponytails have got some newness; one can try with side-high, side-low and semi-ponytails on one side, which give a different look." The play up can be done with the loose strands of the pony, which can be straightened, curled, crimped or gelled with an uneven mess of hair that looks classy. "Not only side ponytails, even side buns and braids are equally in. Hair accessories have a perfect setting on these side hair-dos," adds Richa.

And when it comes to young girls they are having fun with this flirty summer hairstyle. Says Megha Bajaj, a Chandigarh-based model, "These days I'm into a very sleek and in-place hairdo; slipping my hair into a side ponytail is just so perfect." So girls having long hair can have smart back-combed poofs to go along these types of ponytails. "Recently, I have walked the ramp and done photo-shoots sporting side ponytails," adds Megha.

Some celebrities are just so regular with the elegant and suave hairstyle. Says Nauheed Cyrusi, Bollywood actress, "I feel that side ponytails are a very convenient hair-do and I personally carry them for a casual, party look just by curling the ends. So a lower pony would be for a formal look and a higher one for a casual one." Go ahead and get onto the side!

Glam quotient

  • Start with dry hair. Part your hair and make sure you place your side pony on the opposite side of your parted hair.
  • Curl your hair into soft loose curls using a curling rod or straighten them using a hair iron.
  • Pull your hair into a low side ponytail and tighten it with a hair band.
  • Carefully pull out small flicks of hair around the frame of your face.
  • Take a half-inch section of hair from the bottom of the ponytail, wrap it around the base of the ponytail and secure with bobby pins.
  • For an added dose of glam, add a thin headband or flower a few inches above the ponytail.

Shirshasana

Shirshasana is considered as the king of asanas due to its effect on the entire body. The Sanskrit word shirsha means head. Hence this posture is better known as the headstand posture. Its physical and mental benefits derive both from the emphasis on balance and the body’s inverted position. The headstand increases blood flow to the brain, which causes improved brain function and increased vitality and confidence. The other body parts that are benefited through this asana are the endocrine glands, the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and pineal glands. It also helps in any sort of non-alignment of the spine. Shirshasana restores the position of vital organs by reversing gravity. As the blood circulation to the scalp is increased, it promotes hair growth and improves the quality of sleep. Regular practice of this posture enhances awareness and improves the memory.

To start with, fold both the legs at the knees and be seated on the heels of the feet. The body, neck, spine and head should be kept erect. Palms can be placed on the knees. Breathe normally. Interlock the fingers of hands and place them on the soft padding by leaning forward. Keeping elbow-shoulder widths apart, gently place the back of the head on the inner side of the interlocked fingers. Now slowly lift knees from the floor and take one or two steps towards the head. Inhale and simultaneously lift the legs gently so that they are in a vertical position. Keeping the back straight, relax and breathe deeply from the abdomen.

Hold the sirshasana for 15-30 seconds. The time duration can be increased gradually up to three minutes with practice. While returning to the initial normal position, first bend the knees and place one leg on the floor first and then bring the other down. There are several variations to the sirshasana that you can try when you are comfortable with the normal position of it. First try spreading your legs wide apart, carefully separating them very slowly, while maintaining your balance, until they are as far apart as is comfortable. Bring your legs together before returning from the posture. Next you can try placing the soles of your feet together in a Butterfly position while steadily holding the pose.

Without the correct way of lifting the legs up, it is practically impossible to stand in this pose in the right way. The neck is sensitive when you are aligned incorrectly in the shirshasana, you can easily get injured. You should not attempt this posture if you are suffering from high or low blood pressure or any neck problem.

Look cool in bright hues
Colour therapy: Look cool in bright hues

Moving away from the typical 'embroidered look' for the summer, a different genre of fabrics in sarees, suits and dupattas are on exhibit at the Emerald Hall in Sutlej Club. The exhibition has been brought to Ludhiana by Vanita Sahini and Pratima Khanna under the flagship name of Motifs and Weaves. The duo from Chandigarh is very enthusiastic about the traditional hand-woven fare; the blend of fabrics and weaves.

Brought from karigars in and around Benaras, the array of fabrics include typical jamdhanis suits in Net and khadi, cotton suits with tusser weave for the formal look in single and contrasting bright colours, especially the one with the exquisite Dakhai weave . "I feel so rich and traditional while wearing these hand-woven fabrics," says a local, Pooja Girhotra.

Says Vanita Sahini, "Summer need not be drab, as by blending the fabrics one can get that rich, silky look. We have also used short silk for the flowing dupattas and many fabrics are an exciting blend of cotton, silk and tusser."

What men don’t like
The girls vs guys debate is never ending. And of course, the guys won’t stay far behind in telling their side of the story. We talk to a few TV celebs and find out what are the deal breakers in their relationships

Pravesh Rana Farting, using abusive words and talking just for the heck of it without any substance, these are a few things I would never want in my girl.

No attitude please: Aditya Redij I think the worst combination one could possibly imagine is an unnecessary attitude with body odour. (Laughs) I find it difficult to hang out with girls that aren’t easy going and a bad odour just makes it worse for me.

Being yourself: Ravi Dubey Pretentiousness puts me off. Often girls try to pretend to be what they are not or speak or dress in a particular way. That’s a trait that puts off many people. Being yourself is the most beautiful thing you can actually do.

Keep it simple: Raquesh Vashisth The biggest put off for me is when girls try to look like something they are not. Like the coloured hair, too much makeup or the clothes they can’t carry off. Comeback time: Kunal Kapoor

Director Kunal Kohli, who is presently busy shooting for Teri Meri Kahaani with Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, will return to the small screen once again sometime this year.

When we caught up with the filmmaker, who has judged two reality shows before - Nach Baliye 2 and the children’s reality show Ek Se Badhkar Ek, Kunal said he liked judging such shows, and that he might just be seen sitting in the judge’s seat sometime this year, too.

Kunal thought that judging shows was a ‘fun job’ and could easily be done in between films.

However, the truth that it brings into the bank some extra, big moolah is another story all in all.
