Amita Pathak, the lead actress of Bitto Boss is excited about her role and looks forward to her debut Punjabi movie
Jasmine Singh

By now we know, star kids have a fairly easy walk in the world of movie making. Whether it is Bollywood or any other genre they don't have to worry about the thunderous launch. But if it was so easy Amita Pathak, the leading lady of Bitto Boss from Anandpur Sahib, Punjab would have done at least seven-eight films in a year. Being producer Kumar Mangat's daughter working in Bollywood would have been no big deal. "People think that owning a production house makes everything easy for me. I don't deny that my father has been a great support, at the same time I still have to work hard to be accepted in the industry," says Amita who plays a modern day girl in the movie Bitto Boss. She plays a Punjabi girl in the movie. "I am from Punjab so playing my character wasn't difficult."

Making sure that you run a full mile in the industry is but a difficult thing! Amita who made her debut with Haal-E-Dil and has also produced Aithi Tum Kab Jaogey feels there is nothing like a joy ride in the industry. "I always wanted to act. I would often accompany my father to the sets. As I grew I became interested in the creative process of movie making. So, when I was given the opportunity to produce Atithi…I decided to give my best shot," offers Amita.

Women directors, the industry is accepting and acknowledging them, but producers….this sounds like lot of business. "I don't say I am perfect as a producer, I am definitely learning to be one. Atithi..was a good experience for me, my father was supportive and so was Ajay Devgnn. He is a fine actor who would help us with the movie," says Amita who makes her debut with Punjabi movie Taur Mittran Di. "This is a new thing for me, and I quiet like doing Punjabi movie which is something new to me."

Language, how does one get to do that? She smiles, “It wasn’t a big affair. I am from Punjab so we speak Punjabi at home. Thanks to my grandmother I did not have any problem in picking up chaste Punjabi.”

Amita is happy to be a part of Punjabi cienma.”Each genre works in its own different style. The best part is that both Bollywood and Punjabi cinema have given me a warm welcome.” Busy with the promotion of Bitto Boss, Amita hopes this movie can establish as an actor. “As I said, being a star kid has its own positive and megative points. I am living with both.”

Threads of tradition
The world of exotic embroideries and delicate threads comes to life as Shon Randhawa brings her finest to Chandigarh
Vasudha Gupta

A model in a Parsi Ghara jacket
creative cut: A model in a Parsi Ghara jacket

In the world where everyone is ready to walk the west way, there are still a few contemporary designers who are readily reviving ancient heritage crafts of hand embroidery and giving them a modern twist for the modern women of today. Such is the tale of Patine, creation of Shon Randhawa, her mother Chand Balbir Kaur and Geeti Mehra. Bringing the collection to Taj Chandigarh on April 3, Shon speaks about the body of work behind the brand and her affinity to everything threads and stitches is all about.

"We are just constantly creating new permutations and combinations with the threads and the stitches and trying them out on different cuts," she shares with us. Founded in January 2007, the collection boasts of a distinct look for the style-conscious discerning women. Specialising in parsi ghara, chikankari and mochi embroidery, the brand aims at mixing different textures in modern silhouettes with new colour palettes providing a contemporary feel while retaining the classical elements. "The embroideries we work on are timeless. Plus, it is the richness of the craft which tends to add to the glamour element in the outfits we create," Shon says. Adding the 'Patine' touch is what it is all about. "Since the embroidery is traditional, whenever we work on a garment, we try to add something of our own, a distinct style, flavor and taste, which is a reflection of our mindset," she adds.

After her two showrooms in Delhi and Mumbai, Shon is all set to launch her wedding collection as well. "We did a wedding in London and that is where the idea hit us," she informs. Selling more to the European client base, Shon is aware why Indians shy away from picking her label. "Indians are aware and find the similar embroideries in lower quality and don't mind picking it up. We are for the very discerning and only those who like the finer things in life," she smiles.

The work is as painstaking as anything that calls quality. "We have over 300 karigars working in over three units we have," she shares. It's only the chikan under the brand which travels all the way to the land of the nawabs for finalisation. "Yes, chikan work only gets done in Lucknow.

No doubt, the exquisite embroideries have been woven in ancient heritage, Shon shares the story of the embroideries with us. "Although Parsi embroidery traces its origin back to the Bronze age, the ghara is not more than 150 years old," she says. The concepts of the embroidery lay in the Zoroastrian physce coupled with an innate sense of aesthetics, were translated into embroidery on the sari and apparel by Chinese master embroideries. "The brisk trade between Parsi men travelling to China lead to the interaction that lead to the crossover vocabulary of motifs and symbols," she adds.

Doing a lot of versions of the embroideries, the brand pushes to the extreme. "We have artisans, who draw and it is then put on several types of cuts to get the right look," she says. Not only this, the garment is then imagined on a woman. "We think of the various things she can dress it up or dress it down with," Shon shares.

How about getting a piece of heritage art in your wardrobe this summer?

Nachiket Barve
cut to cut: Nachiket Barve

His spring summer collection 2012, Lightness of Being, has been well received by fashion critics. Nachiket Barve’s use of colours is what makes the collection special. The cuts are simple yet extremely stylish. He makes it a kind of compulsion for fashionistas to own a few from his label, Nachiket Barve. Fashion forecast from him should be paid all the attention.

What’s in: The most important factor when it comes to summer dressing is comfort. You ignore it and all the styling part starts looking like a faux pas. Wear easy, breathable, light fabrics. Make cotton and sheer Chanderi silk your favourite this season. Knee-length dresses will be in and so will be maxi dresses. Add lots of pleats and creases to the silhouette to make an outfit look more stylish. For an interesting change, go in for jumpsuits.

What’s out: Bling overdose might just suffocate your fashion sensibilities. Do not opt for garish colours like neon pinks, orange and green. Keep heavy fabrics like velvets and lycra for the latter part of the year. You don’t want to look like babe in the woods. Rather be the ‘it’ girl and wear what ups your fashion quotient.

Colour count: Nothing can get better than sorbet colours in summer. Let the list begin with lime, aqua, pistachio and water melon shades…how about lots of whites in your wardrobe, adding colour with tie and dye? For experiment’s sake, mix and match aqua with lovely pistachio. Another great combination would be mango and white.

Party couture: Again colours will play a vital role. My pick is fuchsia pink or turquoise. Go in for cuts that suit your body type. The fabric should not be body hugging. Knee-length dress would be the best bet.

Leading in style: The best designers are the craftsmen, who give tangible shape to our creations. The collections by our craftsmen at the Craft Museum in Delhi are proofs of the rich talent that our country has. I look upon them for inspiration.

Future collection: I am coming up with a beautiful capsule collection, which has a bit of everything. There is an element of surprise in the collection. Indian wear comprises anarkali suits, cocktail saris and light weight chiffon jackets. Accessories include clutches, bags and jewellery done in fabric.

On the Indian fashion fraternity: Our fashion industry is witnessing an unparallel growth. Fashion weeks enjoy huge business, out of college designers get a chance to showcase at the fashion weeks. There is no dearth of buyers, we have them from India and world over. The industry is becoming organised. What more can we ask for?

Of travels and fables
Neena Sahai’s debut book Journeys Diplomatic and Artistic brings in the experience of living in various countries around the world and more
Manpriya Singh

Four years of endeavour and in between countless doubts would crop up, “Who’s going to read my autobiography, who’s going to be interested in my life history? After all, I’m not a celebrity.” However, that wasn’t reason enough not to go ahead share life’s little memories and turn them into a memoir. So much for the story behind Neena Sahai’s debut book Journeys Diplomatic and Artistic.

She elaborates, “Four years back my daughters wanted to gift me something for my sixtieth birthday. It set me thinking as to what I really wanted. As the wife of an Indian Foreign Servant, I had been to many countries, there were so many stories I wanted to share.” She adds, “Initially the idea was to show my art works but gradually it translated and extended onto my life’s journeys.” The journeys that she undertook, to a dozen countries, as the wife of a diplomat.

Each of them finds a place in the table of contents by name Singapore, African Safari, South Yemen, Moscow, Sweden, Malaysia, America…she laughs, “I not just travelled a lot but actually stayed at each of these places for two to three years. So that gives you an altogether different perspective of a place and its people. So many times, I couldn’t even share all the details and stories.”

Apart from the travels, there are life’s personal details. Perhaps, a chapter devoted to each, “My Husband, My Life, First Journey, My Five Jeeves…all the while, sharing little anecdotes and rare pictures wasn’t a problem. “I’m a very outgoing person by nature, my personality is such that I’m not shy. Many of my friends who read the book remarked, “Oh Neena it’s just you.”

A graduate from GCG Chandigarh, most of the times, she’s been frank and forthright. Underway is, if at all, not exactly a fiction and not exactly a real life story. “I haven’t given any form to my future book or writings as yet but it will be based on my experiences only, the stories that are still left untold.”

stress buster
It’s about the money, honey!
Renee Singh

With the prices of everything scaling up everyday, finance has become an issue in our daily lives. Money problems can be a major source of stress and conflict.

A common misconception is that making more money will bring more happiness and less stress. But research has proved otherwise. More money may bring a momentary thrill as it encourages a change in lifestyle, but people normally adjust to this monetary change in ways that don’t increase their overall happiness or decrease their level of stress.

Since freedom is a very important part of the human psyche, financial freedom plays a very important role in keeping us stress free.

According to a nonscientific poll, roughly 7 out of 10 people are very stressed about money and only 1 out of 10 report that they are not stressed about their finances. The proportion of people stressed about money is going up everyday.

Unhealthy coping behaviour

Financial stress can lead to smoking, drinking, overeating and many other such unhealthy behaviour.

Less expense on self care

People cut corners on healthcare essentials like good dental care etc in order to pay for basic food necessities.

Loose sleep

Stress is a great contributor to overall bad sleeping patterns. This leads to an impaired immune system thereby affecting health negatively.

Mood swings

One’s irritability increases due to financial stress

How to deal with financial stress

Be smart with spending

Many of us have a habit of compulsive spending. Before you buy something, think about whether it would enhance the quality of your life in any way or is it just going to clutter your home and cause more stress.

Cut down on your credit card debt

If credit card debt gets you down, stop impulsive buying. Instead of collecting unnecessary clothes, bags and shoes save that money towards paying your credit card bills.

Use your money to do what you really want

Prioritise your desires and make life easier by investing in a good hired help so that your moments of tiredness and stress are decreased.

Trade off old stuff for new experiences

Do a garage sale and get rid of all the items you never use, at a comfortable price and use that money for better reasons.

Positive activity

Do anything that gives you positive memories. A walk in the park with your dog or maybe some cooking classes you’ve been dreaming of.

Learn to save money and cut costs

Keeping a budget is very important, extravagant expenditure leads to unnecessary stress. You can reduce financial stress by practicing some of these stress reducing techniques and make enough changes to induce a low stress lifestyle. By following this advice one can look forward to a financially comfortable existence.

Weight watch
Muscle mania
Sachin Kalra

If you want to gain some muscles, add the following food items in your diet chart. These foods are high in protein and some contain certain elements that will help you pack on lean muscles.

Eggs: These quick and easy treats are staples to any fitness regime. Some experts believe eggs to be one of the most perfect bodybuilding food available. The protein in eggs has the highest biological value. Each egg contains all eight amino acids essential for the building and maintenance of muscles. Besides that, an egg also contains many vitamins, acids, and other nutrients extremely important for the healing and re-growth of muscle tissue. A serving of six egg whites and two yolks will yield 27 grams of protein and 153 calories.

Peanut butter

Peanut butter is an affordable, natural source of calories and protein for bodybuilders. If you are seeking to add size and tone to your muscles, make peanut butter a regular part of your diet. In addition to providing calories and protein, peanut butter also provides you with protein, folate, vitamin E, magnesium and essential fatty acids. It is known to help the repair of muscles after injury.

Chicken

Chicken is one of the most popular proteins for many body builders. The protein in chicken, notably the chicken breast, is of high quality and should be included in your body building meals. Just a piece of chicken breast of about 150-200 gm can give you a high protein value of 45-60 gm. Its fat content is low and it contains all the essential amino acids.

Almonds:

Almonds are truly one of nature’s miracle foods. They contain many vital nutrients, including protein and healthy unsaturated fats. Since protein is the main component for increasing your lean body mass, almonds are an appropriate fit if you are looking to build the best body you can.

Almonds are also, one of the best sources of vitamin E and in the form that is best absorbed by your body. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that can help prevent free-radical damage after heavy workouts. Moreover, the fewer hits taken from free radicals, the faster your muscles will recover from a workout and start growing. Vitamin E is also helpful in preventing muscle loss. Just one ounce, which is about a handful of almonds, offers about six grams of protein.

Olive oil

You may not think that olive oil can help you bulk up, but it plays a vital role in preventing the muscles from breaking down. Extra virgin olive oil contains a healthy amount of monounsaturated fats, which are good, heart-healthy fat. Olive oil is also high in vitamin E, which fights off free radicals.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain a great deal of Vitamin C, potassium, iron, B complex and anti-oxidants. All of these micro nutrients are crucial in the muscle building and recovery processes. Additionally, since bodybuilders are often at a higher risk of heart disease and prostate issues, they can benefit greatly from the lycopene, which tomatoes contain. Lycopene reduces likelihood of heart disease and prostate cancer.

Legumes

Legumes are an excellent source of soluble fibre, which is important for keeping an athlete’s blood sugar and energy levels stable. Most legumes are relatively high in protein and are a good source of slow releasing complex carbohydrates. This is great for providing a more stable and longer lasting supply of energy for working out.

Low fat dairy

Low fat cottage cheese, yogurt and milk are excellent high protein food. Yogurt offers the additional benefit of live bacterial cultures, which are very good for your digestive system. As long as you do not have any allergies to dairy products, they should be included in your diet.

Broccoli

Broccoli might not seem like the best muscle building food on the list but it is definitely a good one. Broccoli has more vitamin C than an orange and contains high amounts of antioxidants that will help repair your muscles and bulk up your immune system. Broccoli contains lots of nutrients that aid in the production and maintenance of new cells.

Whey protein

There is one extremely important supplement that needs to be included in this list— whey protein. Nearly everyone who weight trains knows the importance of protein supplementation. Whey protein is regarded as a supplement staple, used by athletes, bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts to help with muscle recovery, lean muscle growth, and general health.

When it comes to packing on pounds of muscle, it is generally recommended that your protein intake should be approximately 1.0 to 1.2 gm per pound of body weight. That is a lot of protein to be consumed from whole food sources only. That is why a whey protein supplement is an excellent way to increase your protein intake through the day.

Wedding bells finally?

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan
New dates: Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan

Saif and Kareena were supposed to become man and wife in 2012 and now the wedding date has been set for January 2013.

Saif was busy with Agent Vinod, Race 2, and Cocktail this year. Kareena has been busy with Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Agent Vinod, Heroine, and a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. So the wedding had to be postponed.

A source says, “A big announcement is on its way soon. Saif and Bebo are Bollywood’s biggest and most happening couple. They both have avoided answering questions about their wedding date till now. Of course, they are committed but now they have a date to declare. It will be in January or February. Everything is being worked out from the venue to functions to trousseau and of course, the guest list and invites. Kareena will be free from shooting Bhansali’s film with Ranveer Singh by the end of this year and even Race 2’s release will happen in November. So both of them will be free to pay attention to their grand, fairy-tale wedding. It will be the biggest event of 2013 because Kareena and Saif make national news here!”

Russell Brand
Balancing personality: Russell Brand

Russell Brand has taken a philosophical look at the recent happenings in his life, insisting that he is “doing well” and has no reason to be otherwise. The comedian’s marriage to pop star Katy Perry ended in December, after 14 months. “You don’t need to brush it off if you don’t get it on you in the first place,” a publication quoted him as saying.

“I don’t have to let anything go. I don’t hold on to anything negative. It’s the same as zero-ness,” he added. Asked if that’s part of his yoga philosophy, Brand replied, “I like Kundalini yoga”, which heavily relies on physical and spiritual intuition.

“It’s not about letting it go… You can’t let go of something you don’t hold, you know. It’s meaningless, and much of our world is predicated on meaninglessness. And I don’t do that anymore,” he said. Two weeks ago, Brand also made news when he was arrested in New Orleans for allegedly grabbing a photographer’s iPhone and tossing it.

That, too, he says, is “meaningless to me. It’s like it never happened. It’s meaningless.” He was questioned about reports that he’s had a “Katy Perry” tattoo removed. “Nope… Never had a tattoo removed. Never happened,” he said.

Housefull expected
Sajid believes in making audience centric movies

Sajid Khan
Confident chap: Sajid Khan

Director Sajid Khan, whose third directorial venture Housefull 2 is ready to hit the screens, says he is confident the film will be a blockbuster as he makes films by placing himself in the audience’s seat. “Only a good film will work. If my film is not good then it will not work beyond Monday. But I can say it with a lot of confidence that this film (Housefull 2) is a blockbuster. I am not saying this because this is my film but because I have made this film according to the audience. Every film I make, I make it as an audience,” the 40-year-old said here at a promotional event for Housefull 2.

Sajid says it’s the family audiences that make a film a hit. “The day my film does not work, then no matter how many tie ups I do, it will not work at all. It will work when you people go and watch it with your family,” he said.

The cast of the film, releasing April 6, is known as ‘dirty dozen’ and it comprises Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Riteish Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Shazahn Padamsee, Jacqueline Fernandez, Asin Thottumkal, Zarine Khan, Boman Irani, Mithun Chakraborty, Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor. Sajid says he doesn’t measure his film’s success on the basis of box office collection or reviews, rather by the audiences’ reaction.

“Quite honestly, success doesn’t mean five star rating nor does it mean box-office collection. I think all the people on the stage have faced failure and success at some point of time in their career.

“I think the most important thing in life is getting the love and acceptance of the audience. It does not always come with success. It comes with the connection of the big screen and the audience. For me, that connection is important even if I am behind the camera. So that is success for me and not reviews, awards and collections,” he added. — IANS

Britney Spears Britney Spears has sold her sprawling Beverly Hills mansion for 4,253,000 dollars, which is 1 million dollars more than the asking price. The 30-year-old singer had listed the house at a modest price of 2,995,000 dollars, expecting multiple bids and possibly even a bidding frenzy, a website reported.

Since Spears is under a conservatorship in probate court, there will be a hearing on the sale next month, and anyone can come to court and overbid the accepted offer.

The house is in the Summit, an exclusive gated community and is where the singer famously had a meltdown in 2008, when she was strapped to a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

I am almost 40 and still struggling: Ranvir Shorey

Actor Ranvir Shorey, known for his power packed performances in Khosla Ka Ghosla and Mithya, says he is still struggling to get good work in the industry at 40. Shorey made his debut in Bollywood with Ek Chhotisi Love Story in 2002 and starred in acclaimed films like Traffic Signal and Bheja Fry. But the actor says he is yet to get a chance to prove himself.

“Even at 40, I am still a struggling actor. In our industry star kids are given opportunities. There is no dearth of films for them. I have done films like Ugly Aur Pagli and Mithya for which I was appreciated. But here am I finding it difficult even to get my films released. I am not getting a chance to prove myself,” said Shorey.

The actor also resents the fact that four to five of his films have not yet been released and he does not even know the reason behind it.

“Four to five of my films are yet to be released. It is not that I have not delivered. I have, but my films are not seeing the light of the day. I don’t even know why. It is very difficult for me. Even I have to pay my bills,” the actor said.

Shorey has also done small roles in a number of high profile films such as Jism, Lakshya, Singh Is Kinng, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Yashraj’s Aaja Nachle but they failed to bring good assignments his way. “The only reason I took up small roles in big banner films was in the hope to get the attention of other directors. I didn’t mind taking on small parts. I do not have any regret about it but I fail to understand that why am I not getting good roles,” he said.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is April 2...

Family life will be good for most part of the year. Minor domestic problems and tensions may occur. Several problems you have been facing will be sorted out on their own. You are dominated by Moon and number two. Chances are you might enter into a partnership, but at the same time also oscillate between two choices. However, take care as this can be quite disastrous for you. Your complacency may see in you losing out on opportunities. Relax, as there will also be completion of tasks, contracts or projects taken up by you. In the coming year, you will be able to complete all projects you undertake. You are likely to break free from the monotony and seek relaxation. Your laziness may interfere with your work progress despite your high-energy levels. Your hard work and dedication will help you. Your focus is on development and progress. This positive attitude is going to give you benefits soon.

You will be able to create opportunities for yourself. These will help you fulfill and earn recognition and fame. But in trying to do so, you may become a little dictatorial at times. Cooperation is sparse and your workload may be hefty. Spending may go on the rise but there does appear to be money there to ‘do it’ with electronics, appliances, food, clothing and travel/vehicles dominating the flow. Nature and natural surroundings will draw your attention.

Friends may not be all that helpful, especially if they fan the flames of doubt in any way, even if they claim or believe they are looking out for your best welfare. You need to control your dominating nature, to keep those around you happy. You are a born leader, and expect your colleagues and friends to follow whatever you order them to. Excessive work can take its toll on you and cause mental strain. Your romantic affairs may have to weather conflicts and confusions. You may get attracted to your partner or colleague.

Mood: Distracted and prone to poor judgment. Compatible signs: Capricorn and Cancer. Lucky colours: Purple and Violet. Lucky days: Tuesday and Thursday. Lucky numbers: 5, 11, 19, 23, 35. Lucky gem: Opel. Lucky flower: White tulip. Suggestion on birthday: Donate milk in a religious place.
