2-day Seminar on human biology begins
Patiala, April 1 It was being conducted under the special assistance programme of the University Grants Commission in collaboration with the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university, presided over the opening ceremony. He said the seminar provided an opportunity to scientists to discuss current issues on human biology. He added that besides conducting research and touching various problems, they should create an atmosphere where ‘man’ could be transformed into ‘insaan’. He released a souvenir-cum-book. Inaugurating the seminar, the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, Prof Jai Rup Singh, said the most important thing for research was the observation power of the researcher and not technology. He stressed on the need to understand the value of traditional medicine, which was more important in the treatment of various diseases. In the keynote address, Prof. VR Rao of the Delhi University said nothing was sensible in biology without understanding evolution and nothing was sensible in human evolution without understanding the culture of man. Prof Indera Paul Singh of Delhi was honoured with the lifetime achievement award for contribution to anthropology and human genetics. Prof Promila Mehta, head of the human biology department, welcomed the delegates. Prof SMS Chahal was the coordinator and Dr Rupinder Kaur Bhansal the organising secretary. |

SAD- youth wing tussle out in open
Fatehgarh Sahib, April 1 Youth Welfare Board chairman Raju Khanna, SGPC’s Sant Samaj member Gurpreet Singh and Youth Akali Dal district president Ajay Libra held a meeting of young workers yesterday. SAD leaders Jagdeep Singh Cheema and Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra did not attend it. Alleging that the youth leaders had worked against party candidates during the Assembly elections, they demanded the expulsion of the ‘rebels’. Khanna and Libra called upon the youth to take people-friendly schemes of the state government to the grassroots. They said Youth Akali Dal and SOI committees would be formed at the ward and panchyat levels. SAD leaders and workers alleged that party candidates from Amloh and Fatehgarh Sahib had lost due to the tussle between the warring factions. |

3 thieves Remanded
Dera Bassi, April 1 The police said the three persons had been arrested for stealing a reverse-osmosis water filter system and shuttering for construction. The accused were identified as Sanjeev Kumar of Kapurthala and Vajul and Sakun from West Bengal. They were booked under Sections 380, 379 and 411 of the IPC. — OC

Link roads a shambles, authorities unconcerned
Dera Bassi, April 1 Most link roads of the area have not been repaired since 2005. Residents have been complaining to the authorities concerned, but no action has been taken so far. Heavy rain and the plying of overloaded heavy vehicles have damaged the roads. Deep potholes have also caused a number of accidents. Mandi board officials say following a government directive, a list of link roads which are in a poor condition has been sent to it. The link roads from Dera Bassi to Jolly, from Lalru to Bhagwasi and Mianpur, from Jolly to Bhukri and Bhagsi, from Dappar to Aganpur, from Malkpur to Jolly, from Dera Bassi to Behra, from Dera Bassi to Amlala, from Dera Bassi to Samgouli, from Lehli to Jalalpur and from Dappar to Gholu Majra are in this category. Block Congress president Harbhajan Singh and block CPI secretary Avtar Singh Dappar claim that the government has been making tall claims on development in rural areas, which have turned out to be false. |

Chandigarh, April 1 Chandigarh State Handball Championship that concluded at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, on Saturday. Ravinder Talwar, secretary general, Chandigarh Olympic Association was the chief guest of the closing ceremony and distributed the prizes and medals to the winners and also honoured the international handball players of Chandigarh who brought laurels for Chandigarh in the toughest and fastest game of Handball. CCA Haryana beat AG counterparts
Chandigarh, April 1 Proving their excellence Sunil Behl scored 54 runs in 41 balls while Sharanjeet and Ajay Manchanda made 28 and 40 runs in 17 and 25 balls, respectively. DS Mehra took 2 wickets by giving 26 runs whereas Rajiv Anand took 2 wickets by giving 31 runs. On the other hand, AG Haryana Cricket Club got all out by making 106 runs in 18.3 overs. AP Malik made 25 runs in 28 balls and Rajiv Anand made 12 runs in 8 balls. Ajay Manchanda took 3 wickets by giving 26 runs while Kapila took 2 wickets by giving 10 runs. Modern Agencies tie with RealCon XI
Panchkula, April 1 RealCon XI did batting first. Openers aurav Tandon and Navdeep ashed the ball to all corners of the stadium. The duo put together a partnership of 71 runs to give their team a solid platform to build upon. Gaurav was removed by Rajan while Navdeep continued his brilliant display of strokes at the other end and kept scoring at a brisk pace. He completed his half-century in 44 deliveries and was bowled out on the very next ball. Rohit Singh also chipped in with 36 runs towards the end of the inning and remained unbeaten. RealCon managed to put up 156 runs in their 20 overs. In reply, Modern Agencies also picked up the run rate from the first over itself, with the first wicket falling at a score of 48 runs. Two-month golf coaching camp
Panchkula, April 1 This is the fifth coaching camp and the coaching would be given twice a week, every Saturday and Sunday, for a duration of two months for children, women and men of all ages. The Camp will be conducted between 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm and the members as well as the non-members of the club can also enroll for it. Those who enroll for the camp would be taught dress code, safety, etiquette, rules of golf, grip, aim, alignment, stance, posture, hitting, chipping, putting, long irons and short irons. A nominal fee will be charged from all participants. The spokesman of the Panchkula Golf Club said that prizes worth Rs 2,000 would be given to the participants in a fun competition, which will be conducted on the last day. Two-day chess championship from April 5
Chandigarh, April 1 From each category, top players including two boys and two girls, will be selected to represent the city in the forthcoming national games to be held at Pondicherry (U-7) from July 15 to 24 July and in UP (U-17) from July 16 to 25. No bidders for sports equipment
Chandigarh, April 1 According to information, various bidders have failed to submit their quotations even after repeated efforts, due to the tedious process of E-tendering. The department has also far failed to purchase gym equipments, athletic equipments and other sports gear for various coaching centers of city. An official on the condition of anonymity said, “The process of E-tendering is very complicated and moreover many bidders failed to understand the process, hence many a time they commit mistake while filing their quotations, that lead to their rejection of the application,” said the official. He added, “Many bidders have approached us and asked to change the process but we cannot as we are also bound to rules. As per my knowledge as many as four times, many applications have been rejected only because they failed to know the difference between the technical and financial bid. If they successfully get pass through technical bid they failed to cross the financial bid. The procedure includes online tendering, technical bid, financial bid, order inspection and later delivery. All this is about a month long process.” |

Nilesh wins singles and doubles titles
Chandigarh, April 1 In the doubles event, the PGIMER team consisting of Dr Nilesh and Dr Sandesh Kumar won the doubles title against Bhatia and Sandeep from GMCH-32 (21- 6, 21- 9).
