Doing something creative makes one feel worthwhile. Here are a few who have taken it to a separate level

One of them was worrying over the end of the old school photography, while two of them felt the fun with good old paper had come to an end. The inspiration behind the initiatives might not make for as towering a story as a Jimmy Choo heel, but the girls deserve a mention in their own right. Meanwhile, someone's thinking of a business opportunity in the art of packing.

Rather than fretting and frowning over lack of options, they combined business with fashion, weaved in their creativity, thought of a market where none existed. "There is so much that we can do with paper products; there is wall art, business cards, stationary, wedding cards, coupon cards… we thought something as simple as taking notes had simply come to an end," Bhavneet Rehal, the brains behind the paper venture Create A Flutter, rues over the almost extinct practice of holding a piece of paper and recalls the thought behind her entrepreneurial venture in the same breath. She adds, "We wanted to make people realise the beauty and joy on holding beautiful cards and sheets of paper and that is how last August we came up with the venture."

A bachelor's degree in actuarial science from the University of Waterloo, five years in a job, seemed practically perfect but...she adds, "I don't regret the decision at all, these months have been very satisfying; so what if we had to start from scratch."

There is a similar, if not the same story, unfolding elsewhere. That's what happens when creativity comes calling. A bachelor's in psychology and wedding photography might have only one thing in common; April Sher Bhaika, one of the two girls behind the entrepreneurial initiative, The Unreal Bride. "The old school photography was no more happening. People had stopped organising photo booths and it was all turning so commercial. That's how and when we came up with The Unreal Bride. Initially, people didn't understand but now they are getting the hang of it."

And it's almost been two years of set styling, conceptualisation, deciding on the colour palette, hunting for locations and freezing on the perfect memories. "It's been very satisfying," she cuts in and keeps it short as well as simple.

Like they say, girls will be girls. Being imaginative and artistic best comes as part of the package…oops packing, the story behind Wrapalicious. "Neither have I done a course in packing nor can I tell anyone how I am going to go about it. It's all about creativity and it comes to you. Doing something creative makes you feel worthwhile at the end of the day," Nomida Trehan sums up her story behind the creative venture in packing. At the end of the day, making something out of nothing gives the ultimate high. "I wasn't very happy with how people would discard their old dresses. I was anyway guiding my friends over their dysfunctional wardrobe and now studio plans are underway," says Kirat Kataria, B.sc student. She adds, "Being able to do your own thing is in itself a big achievement. And if it's in the field of creativity, it's a success all the more." Wish someone out there was dissatisfied with the Chandigarh's shopping scene, the shoes available, lack of size options, how the shops close at eight-thirty, the way we stand in queues during sale…how one wardrobe cannot contain all!

Well BLOCK-ED
Ashima Batish

The black leather bag with block-printing placed on the top-most shelf is the first object that draws your attention in the studio. Haven't seen the 12th century art form on leather before! Other creations are dupattas, kurtis, clutches, belts… with a common feature so obvious that it doesn't take much time to notice-block-printing. That's the USP of the designer label — BK.

Surprisingly, Bhavneet Kaur — the person behind the label — doesn't feel the need to include 'popular design elements' —swarovskis and other stone embellishments. "I don't think that any pattern can match the elegance of block-printing. It has survived so many centuries, modern design elements and designers' changing sensibilities."

So the designs are a part of every creation by her and only the patterns vary. The variety is also added in the form of appliqué, mukaish, zari band dabka work. "I have always preferred to work within the sphere of ethnic Indian art and craft. These are evergreen; a phulkari will never go out of fashion as also block-printing." Even the fabrics she is using for her creations are in tandem with her designer themes, khadi silk, cotton and khadi.

While there are a few bags in leather, most of them are made of khadi silk with block print patterns nicely done on them. "I take the fabrics to Delhi with design patterns of block-printing. The amount of work the karigars get from designers across the country is massive, which again proves how popular the art-work is." Bhavneet has been planning to retail her stuff but hasn't been able to, "Although retailers agree to buy my stuff, they want the label to be removed. I don't want people to further experiment with my creations. There are sentiments attached to it and I hope retailers will understand that sooner or later."

Besides working on her label, what keeps her busy is styling wardrobes. The novel concept is fast becoming popular in Chandigarh, where she is employed by fashion-conscious people who want her to add or subtract stuff to their wardrobe.

Share quality time
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Holidays are always welcome, but the concept of vacation has changed over the years even as big players have entered the holiday business. And the latest to attract the tourist in you is the concept of 'time share' holidays; as an average Indian is becoming holiday-conscious and believes in a yearly 'family holiday' concept, which was not present some years back. We catch up with people who opted for these holidays.

"We went for a 14-day tour of South India under the 'time share' holiday concept and we were given all that was promised to us," says Himalini and Bharat Kapoor. They explain the concept, "It is a simple concept where you buy a week or weeks at a holiday home for a fixed number of years and pay in advance the lump-sum amount to the company. Other than that, you pay a minimum amount of maintenance to the company according to the package you have opted for."

But do these limited time-period holidays actually make vacations memorable? Says Ridhima and Puneet Arora, "We bought this time-share holiday package two years back and we got a number of options to go for a vacation; they also offered a life-time memebership. However, we were a bit skeptical as you get bound to a particular place; it narrows your options as these companies have select places for holidays and you have to manage your holiday dates according to the availability of hotels. That spoils the mood sometimes."

Well, that is a risk, but some risks are worth taking! Says an employee from a company that provides these holidays, "Time-share holiday mean a 'dream home away from home' and it is a Western concept that has come to India lately. Under this concept we provide 7-8 holidays each year in a gold or silver crown property according to the package a particular client has taken. Though it depends upon the client whether they avail the holiday period at a stretch or break-it-up, we give them options in India as well as abroad. Plus we have divided the holiday season into three periods; red: peak, white: mid and blue: away from the crowd, so it again depends on the client when they want to avail the vacation."

Stress buster
Are all relationships worth keeping?
Renee Singh

People in our lives can be a great source of comfort but also sometimes they can be a significant cause of stress. Stress relief is very important for our physical and emotional well being. We understand this and we all realise the value of a good relationship. Having a happy relationship is a great stress reliever, conversely a conflicted relationship can bring a great deal of stress. Relationship research shows that there is a very important impact that relationships have on our health, well being and stress levels.

Relationship conflict can negatively affect your health in several ways.

Impact on immunity

Stress dampens the immune system. Ongoing stress can really take a toll on your health and needs immediate attention.

Family conflict

This is not uncommon. The most important relationships in our lives are within our family and are perhaps the greatest cause of our major stress. I feel this not basically due to a lack of love but due to a lack of comfort in dealing with conflict among family members, whether it is open conflict over the dinner table or a one to one argument.

Ambivalent friendships

These are relationships where interactions are sometimes negative and hostile and sometimes positive and supportive. These have a clear negative impact on health, affect blood pressure, contribute to heart disease and many other co related conditions. It is in your best interest to minimise and eliminate negative relationships in your life.

Make a plan to minimise stress of ambivalent relationships by dealing with stress in these two steps.

n Step one

Make a list of all the friendships in your life. Include all the people you can think of as friends, whether you meet them sometimes or you meet them regularly.

n Step two

Circle the name of friends or people in your life who are positive, those who support you when you are down and share your joy when good things happen to you.

Ask yourself

* Is this relationship worth the work you are putting in?

* Am I holding onto the relationship because of habit?

*Would I want to be with this person?

* Does the person make me feel good about myself?

*Am I uncomfortable with the person?

* Do I like who I am when I am with that person?

* Do we bring out the best in each other?

*Can I trust this person?

* Do we have common interests?

* Am I receiving as much as I give to this relationship?

Once you answer these questions it gives you a clearer picture of whether the relationship is positive for you or negative.

Restructure your thoughts

Our habitual thought patterns shape what we get angry about. Change your negative thoughts to change them to positive.

Let go of toxic relationships

At some point accept that some relationships stress you continually. Recognise these people and keep them at a safe distance.

Octane rating does not imply the energy content in the fuel; it simply is the measure of fuel’s tendency to burn in a controlled manner

So now that you own a bigger CC machine it is time you knew what kind of fuel to use and why. The inquisitive may read further.

You hear those guys talking about 87, 93, 97 octane value fuel but never cared to know what is Octane and what does it stand for? Now that you are making the effort to read, here you go.

What is Octane?

Octane is a type of hydrocarbon which has 8 carbon atoms joined together. Of all the hydrocarbons, Octane handles compression well - that is to say that you can compress it to large extent before it destabilizes. Octane rating does not imply the energy content in the fuel; it simply is the measure of fuel’s tendency to burn in a controlled manner.

What is the definition of right fuel?

Right fuel for the engine is the one which ignites at the correct compression ratio in a controlled manner, than exploding. Different kinds of fuel available are – Regular Unleaded (87 octane), Speed 93 (93 octane), Speed 97 (97 octane)

What kind of fuel does my vehicle require?

Consult your owner manual. Majority cars would mention regular fuel, but vehicles using high performance engines such as sports cars, superbikes would ask for high octane fuel. High performance engines are engines which give higher horsepower given their weight. High horsepower can be achieved by increasing the compression ratio given a displacement which requires the fuel to be ignited by spark plug at the optimal point - and so the demand for high octane fuel. Using a low octane fuel, would cause the fuel to ignite prematurely due to compression and hence create knocking in the engine. Occasional knocking won’t harm, but heavy and persistent knocking can cause damage to the engine. You would know that you are using the right fuel by observing if there is any knocking in the engine.

Would using a higher octane fuel increase my vehicle’s performance?

Yes and No. Yes, if your vehicle has a high performance engine demanding a higher octane fuel, it would increase the performance to optimal level. No, if your vehicle carries a regular engine using high octane fuel would be of no help. However, there are additives in such fuels which help keep the injector and fuel filter clean.

What if high octane fuel is not available?

In such cases of contingency, you can keep octane boosters handy. The quantity of octane booster to be added to fuel tank would depend on its potency and your tank size – read instructions on the bottle.

It only helps to use the right fuel for your vehicle. So, be an informed consumer when asking the attendant on what kind of fuel to fill.

Head to toe

Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana is an invigorating seated side-bending posture. In Sanskrit, Parivrtta means revolved, janu means knee and sirsa means head. Thus Parivrtta janu sirsasana is the revolved head to knee pose.

Though it is called revolved head-to-knee, it is very difficult to make contact between these two parts of the body. Parivrtta janu sirsasana deeply stretches the side of the body from the hips to the fingertips. Abdominal organs are contracted and stretched on both sides. It also alleviates the disorders of the abdominal organs, the liver, the kidney, the spleen and strengthens them. It’s a great method of stretching the spine, shoulders, groins and hamstring of the extended leg. It is very helpful in improving the digestive system. To start with, sit on the mat with your legs stretched straight in front of you. Bend your right knee and bring the sole of your right foot to the inner left thigh. Lean your torso over to the left, and hold the big toe from the inside of your left foot with your left hand, bringing the back of your left forearm to the floor inside your left leg. Begin to twist your torso away from the left leg, opening your chest to the right. If your left arm is inside the left leg, you can press the arm into the leg for resistance as you twist. Bring the gaze forward, letting the head and neck follow the twist in the spine, but do not over rotate the neck. Raise the right arm overhead and let the right biceps come over the right ear. Keep the left foot flexed. After 4-6 breaths, release your big toe and come back up to sit and switch the position of your legs for a twist to the other side. You can perform this yoga posture if you are suffering from slight lower back pain but avoid it when you have strong back pain. Performing this yoga form on a daily basis will especially benefit people who sit on computers for long hours. Increase the duration of practice gradually.

Happy times for Anushka

Farah Khan is making Happy New Year, her dream film with Shah Rukh Khan and the leading lady who has bagged the coveted role is none other than Anushka Sharma.

Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor were in the running for the prized role but Anushka Sharma has bagged it. SRK is already working with Katrina in Yash Chopra's film and Anushka has a supporting role in it. Anushka and SRK's jodi was much appreciated in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. This will be their first romantic pairing since then. A source says, "Farah likes Anushka and liked her work in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baaja Baaraat. She is quite versatile and has a striking persona. She is popular and has a great work ethic. Moreover people have already SRK with Kareena and will see SRK with Katrina so it will be a nice change to see him with Anushka again in a different type of film, albeit a commercial masala comedy. Farah likes working with different heroines. So Anushka has agreed to do the film and the formalities have to be worked out."

The source continued, "Anushka's career is going places. She is shooting with Aamir Khan for Peekay soon. That film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and she also has Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola which is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and Imran Khan is her co-star. Ground realities
Despite being such a successful star Shahid decides to reamin grounded

With millions of screaming fans, critical acclaim, slick dance moves, media buzz and interesting films in kitty, Shahid Kapoor is one of the most popular stars today. He will be seen next in Teri Meri Prem Kahani with Priyanka Chopra. People still cannot get enough of his avatars in Mausam and Kaminey. The good looking boy talks about being a star and being an actor

Work experience

A star's job is to look good and an actor's job is to do different roles and expand his experience. I am a commercial hero trying to be a good combination of both. The industry had great actors, directors and composers but it is very difficult to find a decent script. So when you get it, grab it. Every actor or star should work with Vishal Bhardwaj at least once to discover new aspects of oneself.

Personal space

I am very particular about my workouts and love going for rides on my bike. It clears my head and recharges me. I love my personal space. It is important to make time for self and do what you like. Not drinking and smoking may be considered boring but at the end of the day, your health is of utmost importance. I am not a party animal though I love dancing.

Keep grounded

Always be there for your family and friends who have known before you were famous. Care and be concerned about them as they keep you grounded. Keep your personal life private. Respect the dignity of a woman and don't criticise anyone in public. Don't lose yourself to stardom.

Being famous

Fame has a good side and a flip side. You have to handle both because fame is fickle. Tomorrow somebody else might take your place. Don't let anything that is written about you in the media make you upset. It's difficult but you will get used to it. The people who matter to you should know the truth.

Improve skills

Work towards improving your craft and learn as many skills as you can. You must love your job and enjoy doing what you do.

Not funny

Riteish Deshmukh does not watch his own movies and he doesn't watch comedies either. He likes drama, action films and watching other people's movies and world cinema.

Success comes after a failure!

Behind every successful man there definitely is a rejection story to speak of and upcoming star Bhoop Yaduvanshi surely vouches for this. Bhoop, who will soon be seen making his debut in playwright turned filmmaker Akashaditya Lama's Cigarette Ki Tarah, owes his foray into Hindi film industry to the rejection from a television show!

"I have been a model for many fashion shows and was also among one of the finalists in Gladrags model hunt a couple of years ago. I had always been inclined towards acting and tried auditioning for one of the popular TV shows. Sadly, they turned me down. And thankfully that rejection came about otherwise I wouldn't have been in this film today!" says Bhoop.

Right after his stint with modeling, Bhoop took to theater in a big way in a bid to learn the nuances of acting. Bhoop thinks that there couldn't have been a better start for him than Cigarette Ki Tarah.

Chatter box
Hosting issues

Actor and TV host Mandira Bedi will soon return to television as a host. She will be the face of the second season of Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar on Star Plus. She talks about returning to TV and handling mommy duties.

Why did you choose to return with JJWS?

I had lots of fun doing the first season few years ago and then though there were plans to do another season soon, it didn’t happen. Now that the show is going on air soon, I couldn’t be more thrilled.

What will be your role in the show?

I will be hosting the show and taking it ahead. Hosting is a lot of fun and I might not sing on the show but I will be an integral part of this musical show.

How is motherhood?

It is fun and demanding. My son is nine months old and I began working five months ago hosting several corporate shows. I handle my work and motherhood equally well.

What else is on your plate?

I have started working on my play again and it has been great. I had to rehearse as there are lot of dialogues and it is a two actor play but it is fun too.

Will you be looking at more work in the television industry?

For now it is just JJWS and nothing else as I have my play and other MC commitments. For JJWS which will be a weekend show, I will shoot one day a week which won’t be stressful.

What about doing TV serials as many seasoned actors have returned to fiction?

I would love to do a TV show if something apt came. I began my career with a TV show and have been part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi too. But later hosting cricket-based shows took me away. — HRM
