MC budget passed in a jiffy

It seems local councillors are not bothered about the development to be carried out for city residents. This could be known from the fact that the MC budget of Rs 741.25 crore was “passed” in merely 8 minutes, averaging Rs 92.65 crore per minute.

Man sets himself afire

A man set himself on fire after his wife refused him to give Rs 50 to buy liquor here today. The incident took place in the Jodhewal area in the evening when Gurdeep Singh (29) asked his wife for money to buy liquor.

Some relief for taxpayers
Ludhiana, March 16
Giving some relief to taxpayers, Pranab Mukherjee today proposed to raise the income tax exemption limit for individuals from Rs 1.80 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per annum. Unveiling the Budget proposals for 2012-13, he also increased the limit to Rs 10 lakh under the 20 per cent tax slab. The current limit is Rs 8 lakh.

Gold buyers will suffer
Ludhiana, March 16
Gold, cars and white goods will become costlier after the Finance Minister proposed to double customs duty on standard gold up to 4 per cent from the current 2 per cent, non-standard gold to 10 per cent from 5 per cent in the Budget. Silver will shine more as the Finance Minister has fully exempted the excise duty from branded silvery jewellery. Manufacturers and traders have given thumbs down to such a move.

TET made mandatory for teachers

To get a job of teacher in schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) would not be an easy task for unemployed degree holders. By implementing the Right to Education Act (RTE), the CBSE has made Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory for new recruitments of teacher.

‘Arrested trio was planning robbery’
