Auction of fancy numbers on April 12
Fatehgarh Sahib, March 16 He said, “The reserve price for the auction of PB-23M-0001 is Rs 50,000 while for 0002 to 0009, the reserve price is Rs 10,000 and for 0010 to 0100, the reserve price is Rs 3,000. He said the last date to apply for these numbers was April 9 and all drafts must reach the DTO’s office by that day. He said the auction of the remaining fancy numbers (PB-23L series) will be held on March 30 and the drafts must reach the DTO’s office by March 27. |

Student killed in mishap
Ambala, March 16 The deceased was identified as Ankit Shukla, a resident of Kanpur (UP), while the injured, Utpal Chauhan, hailed from Bihar. As per information, Ankit and Utpal were going to Haridwar from Jalandhar on a motorbike. On reaching Khudda village around 8km away from Ambala Cantonment, their motorbike collided with a truck. Both the students sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to the Civil Hospital at Ambala Cantt. The doctor declared Ankit Shukla brought dead while Utpal Chuhan is undergoing treatment. The police said it had informed parents of the deceased about the incident. |
Accused moves special CBI court
Panchkula, March 16 Dr Upendra, in his application, urged the court that all 31 persons should be summoned and tried under the Transplantation of Human Organ Act-1994 as well as other provisions of the law along with the other co-accused. He maintained that the CBI had recorded the statements of 31 persons (recipients and their relatives) under Section 161 in which they had made confessions that they were involved in receiving kidneys against payment and without authority and as such they had violated the law. “Under the provisions of Transplantation of Human Organ Act-1994, any person involved in any manner in the alleged commercial dealing of human organs for the therapeutic purposes against a payment/consideration, is liable to be tried and punished along with the other alleged co-accused,” the application stated. Even though Dr Upendra has denied his role in the kidney scam, he has demanded trial against 31 persons whose names and addresses have been mentioned in the application in the interest of justice and law. The CBI will file its reply on March 22, the next date of hearing. |

Hawara, Bheora brought to court
Chandigarh, March 16 They were brought from Tihar jail. They were being produced in connection with the Burail jailbreak case. There was tension in the courtroom for over two hours when they were produced. Inspector Diwan Singh, electrician Jagtar Singh and Mahinder Singh were cross-examined by the defence counsel. Jagtar Singh deposed in court that he went to the jail thrice for repair of floodlights before the jailbreak. Mahinder Singh deposed in court that the car in which the accused escaped belonged to him and he had sold it to Gurcharan Singh. The case would now come up for hearing on April 19, when witnesses would be further cross-examined. |

Gang of thieves busted, 2 held
Panchkula, March 16 The two accused have been identified as Lakhan and Sonu, both residents of Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh. The police has recovered stolen valuables and Rs 40,000 in cash from the accused. The accused were produced in the court today which sent them to judicial custody. On a tip off the the CIA team arrested the two accused who were involved in various thefts, including robberies in five shop-cum-offices (SCOs) of Sector 15 on the intervening night of December 9 and 10. The two also told the police that they had committed thefts in SCOs 15 and 40 in Sector 11, SCO number 12 of Sector 10, SCO number 351 and SCO number 350 of Sector 9. Two cases have already been registered against them under Sections 457/380/411/511 IPC at the Sectors 14 and 5 police stations. |

Chandigarh, March 16 The boy was caught with the motorcycle near his house at Sector 40 later in the day. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC was registered. The accused was sent to the juvenile home. |

Gold chain snatched from woman
Chandigarh, March 16 Reena Gupta of Sector 9, Panchkula, reported that the youths fled after snatching her gold chain near the government school. A case under Sections 356, 379 and 34 of the IPC was registered.

Chandigarh, March 16 Today, though India lost the match against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup being held in Bagladesh, the legendary cricketer broke all records and scored his long awaited 100th century in his 23rd year of his cricketing career. The Chandigarh Tribune team has come across some cricket enthusiasts and Sachin’s fans, who wanted to be a part of the historic day. “I am proud of Sachin as he is the second cricketer of the millennium after Kapil Dev. As Sachin has achieved his aim by hitting the 100th ton against Bangladesh, he should retire from the One Day International cricket. City team make it to semifinals
Chandigarh, March 16 Ten players from Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 36, thrashed Tamil Nadu by eight goals to book a berth in the semis. Chandigarh, which led 2-0 at half time, thrived at the brilliant display by Limpuia who pumped in five goals, including three in a row, to demoralise the rivals. Robin Chetri accounted for two goals, while Lalram Zauva of the GMHS scored one. Chandigarh, with all-win record from three matches from Group "B", are at the top with nine points and were the first team to enter the semifinals. Madhya Pradesh are behind Chandigarh with seven points. In another match, Tarun Uikey scored a brace to guide Madhya Pradesh to a 2-1 win over Jharkhand. |
Piyush Chawla does it for Central Zone
Mohali, March 16 Now, the Central Zone will have a semifinal clash with North Zone at Dharamsala beginning on March 18. After winning the toss, Central Zone opted to field and restricted South Zone to 224 for 9 in 50 overs. Ravi Teja 32, Dinesh Karthik 52 and Rohan Prem 38 were the principal run getters for South Zone. A 78-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Dinesh Karthik and Rohan Prem was the highlight of South Zone innings. For Central Zone, Bhuvnesh Kumar 3 for 43, JG Saxena 3 for 39 and skipper Piyush Chawla 2 for 48 were the main wicket takers. In reply, Central Zone knocked off the required runs in 39.3 overs. They scored 225 runs losing six wickets in the process. They were helped in their cause by a fluent half century 50 off 58 balls by former international Mohd Kaif before he was castled by left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. The other notable contributions came from JG Saxena 32, Ashok Maneria 37 and Piyush Chawla who was named man of the match for his all-round performance. A 61-run partnership for the third wicket between Mohd Kaif and Ashok Mareia was the highlight of Central Zone’s innings. The first semifinal will start at 9 am at the PCA Cricket Stadium, Mohali, between West Zone and East Zone.
