What’s in a name!
Bumboo…Khol Do Parda Comedy Ka might come across as a weird name for a Bollywood movie, but its cast and crew swear they haven’t tweaked the name to make it cheesy
Jasmine Singh

From a distance, everything seems quite perfect with Hindi cinema…till we get closer to peek into the titles - Delhi Belly, Sahi Bandey Galat Dhandey, Salim Langde Pey Mat Ro…and the recent - Bumboo…Khol Do Parda Comedy Ka, the cast of which came to Chandigarh for promotion. Some hushed giggles here and there, somewhere in the corner a group trying to fit in the word Bumboo in different sentences, and some waiting for someone from this group to take the lead and explain!

Bumboo…is this all you could think of? But obvious, all eyes turned to the debutant director Jagdish Rajpurohit, a happy-go-lucky man who is in no hurry. He wants us to chill out, let our pen breathe for a bit, while he spins an explanation.

“Bumboo is a name that is used in a civil sense. And we haven’t tweaked it around to send some message or made it cheesy. It is a movie based on a French story L’emmerdeur by Francis Veber, which is adapted to suit Indian sensibilities. All I have wanted to do is present a comedy - simple and easy. As for the name, I have just used Bumboo as a noun and not as a verb,” he smiles. Now, those who have not missed English grammar lessons in school will understand the play of noun and verb better!

Jagdish will soon be working on another script based on real-life incident of custodial death. “Let Bumboo release; I would have no work, so we can talk about it then,” he says. This guy could be good with comedy. Let’s give it a shot! “I guess making a comedy movie is the best social service that one can do.”

The director-producer is done with his talking and now the house is open to the rest of the cast - Sharat Saxena, Sumit Kaul and Kavin Dave. We have seen them somewhere, here and there. Here is this guy whom aunties and ladies living on the spicy curry of television love to hate - Sumit Kaul. He doesn’t look conniving; instead he is flattering us with lavish smiles. “I play a psychiatrist, who has a soft corner for beautiful women, in the movie. I asked Jagdish to tell me I wasn’t playing yet another negative character after Hindi serial Laage Tujhsey Lagan. But then I realised that every man has some playfulness in him,” shares Sunil, who has done ‘blink and miss’ roles in Rockstar, Once Upon a time in Mumbai…do we remember seeing you? “You wouldn’t have, they were insignificant roles. Working in these movies was, however, an experience. I have realised it is important for me to convince myself rather than convincing anyone else.”

While Sumit has loads to talk about, the guy seated next to his chair; curly hair, chubby from every which way, waits patiently to be grilled. (This is what an interviewee thinks of the interviewer). Kavin Dave, you would hardly want to grill him; he entices you to get up and pull his cheeks and ask - hey what brings you here! “I was working on the screenplay when Jagdish asked if I could act in the movie. I couldn’t have said no.” Kavin plays a photojournalist - frustrated, dejected and depressed. Are you like like this in real life? “Definitely not; I know I was little on the heavier side. I did not want to be an actor or anything, so here I am doing well for myself,” he stares at us. We don’t doubt. It’s time to shift the radar to ‘the man’ Sharat Saxena. He is the half baddie (Ghulam) and half goodie of Hindi cinema. With Bumboo, he will make us laugh. “I have always been an action hero and it was with Ghulam that I gained recognition. Now, I would like to do entertaining roles,” he says, not before he tells us that he drove home in his new BMW which he always wanted to do. “For the last forty years, I am struggling in Mumbai. If I don’t get films, this might be my last one. For me the measure of success was to drive a big car, which I have now.” A dead pan expression followed by a genuine smile…Sharat the half good and the half bad man of the industry!

Pragya and Megha Samor, who are using different prints on a single piece for their summer collection, suggest Pakistani cut for a slimmer look

Different types of cuts and kalis introduced in the suits and tunics will be in these summers.
Go bright with pastel shades like pinks, greens and yellows.
Get clothes stitched according to your body type.
Suits with Pakistani cuts make one look slimmer and taller.

Coming together of two generations in the field of design is something we don’t see very often. And then we bump into Delhi-based mother-daughter designer duo Pragya and Megha Samor! They were in Chandigarh on Tuesday at Soh-Koh, a clothing store in Sector-26, to launch the summer collection of their label — Samor.

Pragya Samor, who is into designing clothes for the past fourteen years, gets inputs from daughter Megha Samor, who is a pass-out from NIFT, Delhi. They have showcased their collection twice at the Lakme Fashion Week and for Wills Lifestyle Week. Their collection includes both Indian and Western wear. Says Megha, “We have showcased bridal and festive line; as also a casual summer collection. While Indian ensembles have more of digital prints and different kinds of embroideries, the Western wear has more of dresses and tunics.” They have tried to build in a fusion of different kinds of prints, and that too within the cuts and kalis of the dresses as well as suits. Says Pragya, “We don’t follow the typical trends that other designers do; we move a step ahead. We try to develop our own prints and inculcate a lot of patchwork and embellishments.” The ensemble boasts of Pakistani cuts whereas the slit area has a different printed material. “These Pakistani cuts make you look slimmer and taller,” says Pragya.

“Anarkali suits will definitely stay but their lengths will vary. Also, they are best suited for the Indian body type. As for their substitute, Pakistani cuts will step in,” opines Megha. Talking of the coming summer season, what’s going to rule this time? “Very light materials like georgettes and chiffons, pastel shades like pinks, blues, yellows and greens. Minimalist works and that too thread embroideries,” says Megha. The dupattas will transform into stoles and the salwars will rise a bit in terms of their length.

What is the USP of their designer label? “We want to make people look beautiful because clothes can create miracles. We want to give our clients clothes as per their body types,” they echo. The designer duo is busy with running their label in India as well as Dubai. They designed for Veena Malik in her show Bigg Toss and are in touch with Ragini Khanna, a television actor, for designing clothes for the events she shows up on.

Two different people working on the same things, any clash of opinions? Says Megha, “Suggestions from each other are always welcome, and our design sensibilities are almost similar.” Many women these days get reluctant buying designer wear as they become repetitive, but Megha and Pragya work on a limited edition line where once a piece is made, it is not repeated again. For summer collection, they have played around with the silhouettes, cuts, classy works and hand-embroideries. And there is more to come for the season in Maheshwari cottons, malmal and voiles. Beat the heat in style!

success mantra
The perfect remedy
Mona

Dr SM Bose, an eminent surgeon, teacher and research scientist has scores of awards to his credit. Winner of Outstanding Research Award by the President of India and fellowships at Memorial Sloan Ketering Cancer Centre, New York, and Kings College, London, Dr Bose is the Former Senior Professor and Head of Surgery at the PGI, Chandigarh. He was also the President, Association of Surgeons of India. In his 70s, he still carries out complicated procedures. He shares with us the mantras that led to his glowing success.

Right education & atmosphere

One’s education, right from school, is of vital importance, as it lays the foundation of good career. The importance of discipline, punctuality, team work and humility cannot be over-emphasised; the desire to do better and better can only be achieved by updating your knowledge. I was blessed as I was always in an excellent academic atmosphere.

Time & energy management

It is important to manage your time and energy efficiently. One should be very meticulous and careful in selecting one’s priorities, not only in one’s life but even in day-to-day activities, otherwise essential things are left unattended and only unimportant activities are completed.

Work satisfaction over monetary gain

I have always tried to avoid greed of all kinds, except the one to do better and better in my profession. The earning potential of a surgeon is enormous but all of us were quite satisfied with our meagre salary in PGI. For a single earning member in the family like me, it was hand-to-mouth existence, but the name, fame and satisfaction that I got through PGI dwarfed everything else.

Valuing values

Hardwork, discipline, meticulous planning, honesty and dedication are the basic tools that help achieve success. All this gave me strength to experiment with new techniques such as non-operative management of abdominal trauma, conservative surgery for breast cancer, minicholecystectomy, starting of laparoscopy and stapler haemorrhoidectomy in PGI; my colleagues and residents gave me full support to establish these procedures.

Work & recreation

It is important to have a hobby, which helps one de-stress. My work took 60 to 80 per cent of my time, but I still participated in co-curricular activities. I took active interest in debates, sportsand theatre. I still follow creative pursuits; I am fond of writing, gardening as well photography.

DESTINATION FOOD
Plaza pleasure
Exotic food, abstract decor and mouth-watering desserts— eating at the swanky Panorama, Park Plaza is a truly pleasurable experience
Poonam Bindra

With an aim to give foodies in Ludhiana a wide platter to choose from, the Park Plaza has aptly named their 24x7 diner as Panorama. Situated at lobby level, the place affords one a chance to soak in the terrace view through the glass windows. The look is accentuated by a cat-eye surface in shades of red and brown with an abstract mosaic background wall embedded with the mother of pearls.

As we head towards the layout of the buffet, we are pleasantly surprised by the induction heating finished with Korean black marble. The hanging brass lights set the mood for a hearty meal! There are mouth-watering dishes to choose from - the Crisp Drunken Prawns, Cottage Cheese Nagouri and Kashmiri Rogan Josh. Visitors to the place, Dr Vivek and Dr Kavita Saggar seem to be relishing the starters. “This saffron almond soup is awesome with the crisp eggplant sticks dipped in Tempura sauce,” they echo. A welcome addition is the chilled counters - both for salads as well as desserts. “We want the discerning and widely travelled Ludhianvis to go through a complete experience and that’s why we have planned an extensive a la-carte menu with a mix of South-east Asian, contemporary Western and popular Indian dishes,” says Arun Jaiee, general manager, Park Plaza.

Some other visitors, Surbi Ahuja and her friends give a thumbs-up to the lemon grass chicken and refreshing strawberry Margarita. “For a light lunch, we have a variety of sandwiches, pastas and refreshing salads,” says head chef Sudhanshu, who has used hi-end products from all over the world. His personal favourites are loaded prawn crackers and salad with Grana Padno cheese.

For a befitting finish, pick of the desserts is the Kiwi Cherry Flan, the Chocolate Mayo, Strawberry Cream and the amazing Gulab Jamun Pastry!

One can look forward to unlimited liquor or soft beverage brunch on Sundays or wholesome breakfast with a dip in the pool. With an interactive live kitchen and a bar counter right next to the buffet table, nothing is left to be desired!

Subtle sense: Akriti Gupta Photo: Inderjeet Verma

Fashion and style mean a lot to young ones and whether it is branded wear or street pick-up the idea is to appear trendy. If one feels comfortable with what he or she is wearing and feels confident, it sure lands one on top of the styling hierarchy. Winsome MBBS student Akriti Gupta looks for a studied elegance.

Your sense of style is …

I dress to please myself and not others. Style for me is another word for elegance. The sense of dressing up should not be loud and being trendy too means being comfortable with the style one adopts.

Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

My ethnic outfit from Ritu Kumar.

Brand crazy or street pick-ups?

I am mostly a brand person for it denotes total quality

Your style icon would be…

Closer home, it is my grandmom who looks elegant till date and otherwise it is Kate Middleton whom I really admire for her style sense.

Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity?

Would be difficult to pick because now all celebrities are dressed by designers.

Which look would your prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous?

Chic and glamorous both, depending on the occasion.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…

Wearing everything matching from top to toe really bugs me.

Your take on accessories…

I do not like to over accessorise—just a neck piece and a nice bag would do.

Given the chance, you would like to be dressed by…

Undoubtedly by Ritu Kumar!

What gives you a high on the confidence level?

When my mom gives me the rating of “looking good”. I think she is my best critic.

Dance drama: Ranjana Gauhar

The art lovers will have a treat of classical music and dance in the forthcoming 42nd Pracheen Kala Kendra Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan (formerly known as All-India Bhaskar Rao Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan) starting from March 15. The sammelan is one of the oldest music and dance festivals of its kind and was started in 1969.

Maintaining the tradition of excellence, this year too, the kendra is featuring internationally acclaimed legends like Sanjeev Abhaynkar and Purbayan Chatterjee who are scheduled to open the inaugural evening with their vocal-sitar jugalbandi. Young and talented, both Sanjeev and Purbayanhave have carved a niche for themselves as most sought-after musicians of younger generation.

On the second day, Sarod maestro Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar will give a sarod recital. One of the best musicians to carry forward the great Senia Maihar mantle, Tejendra combines the intellectual density and technical virtuosity of his gharana with an extraordinary tone, touch and an ambient melody which transcends any qualification.

The second performer on the second evening will be Guru Shobha Koser. She is a legend in the annals of dance today. A staunch believer in the gurukul parampara, Shobha imparts her disciples not only the intricacies of kathak but also her own sensitivities and message of love, righteous practices and trust.

The third day of the sammelan brings to the city two most distinguished stalwarts of the classical music and dance—GS Rajan and Ranjana Gauhar. Rajan will open the evening with Carnatic flute recital. A music composer, flutist, art critic and arts administrator, Rajan is a multi-faceted artiste who has performed world-wide winning accolades everywhere.

Versatile odissi danseuse Guru Ranjana Gauhar and her troupe will regale the audience with dance drama set to odissi idiom based on Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece Chitrangada. Ranjana has experimented with chhau dance and successfully blended it with her own inimitable style of Odissi. A recipient of Padma Shri award, she has also been trained in kathak and Manipuri dance forms.

On the concluding day, daughter and disciple of Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Vidushi Kalapini Komkali will give a vocal recital. Endowed with a melodious and rich voice, Kalapini is well-trained and widely recognised as one of the finest classical vocalists of young generation.

Bharatnatyam jugalbandi by young disciples of Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan, namely DakshinaVaidyanathan and Amrit Sinha, will provide a fitting finale to the sammelan.

Call of Punjab
Divya Dutta

What could be more interesting than sitting in Punjab and writing this write-up? I am on my way back to Mumbai and now sitting at the airport. These past 12 days have been refreshing and therapeutic for me. It’s a great thing to work and a great thing to have a blast. But when you have a combination of both, it’s the best.

Guess this is by far the most enjoyable phase of my career as I am working with my very favourite directors and it sure is party time!

When you are in the safe hands of an able and super talented director, you just flow. Because you know someone is looking after how you are going to be presented. From the sets of the very talented Madhur Bhandarkar, I joined in the unit of Neeraj Pandey’s Special Chabees! The sheer energy on the sets is infectious.

And the best thing is how a new unit becomes your family and you become so used to them. Shooting together, holding creative discussions, sharing interesting anecdotes and memories! They become such an integral part of you. And now I was in Punjab for yet another very special one. I will disclose it real soon.

But what I loved was the virgin green locations of Punjab—the fresh air, the friendly sun and the ever-affectionate people of Punjab. Simple and warm and so giving! I had an aunty crying out of sheer delight to see me. And she planted a kiss on my cheek. I felt intruded on my space for a second but what took over was an overwhelming feeling when I saw her eyes full of affection— Saade Punjab di kudi! Moist eyed it left me. Be it lassi gur, gur di chai, ask and you shall get it.

With so much love in my kitty, I join in this new unit with another of my favourite directors and another fantabulous role!

Such a high it is to be in Punjab, on different units and donning a different avatar every time. And accumulating memories of the lovely people you work with and meet.

Akela hi chala tha janebe manzil magar, log milte gaye…karwaan banta gaya.

I surely cherish this karwaan of mine!

Jammu and Kashmir ki Kali

Arjumman Mughal from Jammu makes her debut in Bollywood film Ya Rab
She started her career as a model in 2005 after completing an acting course from Anupam Kher’s acting academy. She has done more than 400 print and commercial ads for which she got International Women’s Achievement Award as the most popular model. She never thought of modelling but it came her way easily so she accepted it. Her aim is to become a great actress.

Arjumman says, “I am very lucky as I have not struggled for anything. Whatever I needed came to me easily. My concepts are clear—I am a go-getter kind of person and I believe in myself. I take life as it comes, so my concept is not to plan.”

She adds, “This was the film which came to me and I had no choice and now I can choose. There lies the difference in being an actress. The whole world is happy to see you if you are known.” There is quite a wish list on the people she’d like to work with.

“There are people I would like to work with, like Yashraj Films, Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor, and there are many more fantastic upcoming new actors also.” She adds, “For my fitness, I do yoga, workouts and dance. I focus on my eating habits that keep me fit.” Leisure hours are as simple as it gets. “Whatever time I get I spend with my family and friends. I like Chinese food and home-made food. I enjoy being in this industry because it is a fantastic place for those who understand its qualities.” We wish Anjuman a budding career here.

Glad to be finally working with Akshay: Asin

After working with the likes of Ajay Devgn, Aamir and Salman Khan, Asin is now pairing up with Akshay Kumar in Housefull 2 and the actress says she is glad to have teamed up with the actor on-screen. “I admire Akshay for the kind of disciplined life that he leads. Whether it is personal or professional life, Akshay has been a role model for many out there. He is a hardworking guy and it is wonderful to work with him finally. I am glad,” Asin said.

The actress also praised Akshay for his grounded attitude and and punctuality. “Even after being on the scene for over two decades, he is right on time at the sets and ready to shoot. Moreover he and Sajid have such a tuning with each other, especially after working together in Housefull and Heyy Babyy, that it rubs on other actors as well,” she said.

After scoring a huge success with Ghajini opposite Aamir three years ago, Asin has gone slow with her movie projects instead of signing multiple films. “It is not about the number of movies that I am doing; it is about the experience of working in these films. What is important for me is to have a good time working in a film and interacting with the people involved. This is the reason why I have been so choosy.” This is quite evident from her Southern sojourn as well.

Though she has been active for quite some time there, Asin isn’t overexposed in the Tamil/Telugu industry either. “I am not very prolific there either as I don’t like taking up too much of work. Even when I moved to Bollywood, I carried forward a similar working style. I am not desperate to be constantly doing films every single day of my life. I am not like the one who thinks that grab everything today otherwise all would be lost tomorrow. That’s not my thought process at all,” she said.

Her social dos and appearances are also restricted and she isn’t on-your-face at every event. “I can’t be seen at any particular event for networking reasons. I would be there only if the people involved are close to me. That’s the way I have always been. “Like I was there for Riteish’s (Deshmukh) wedding since he is a dear friend. Then I was also there for Farah’s (Khan) and Sajid’s (Nadiadwala) birthday because these are the people I am close to. If I am seen there, it is not for gaining limelight or earn any PR points. If I have to find added visibility then there are my movies for that. I have enough commercial movies that put me into that visual space. I don’t want to overdo that,” said Asin. — PTI

Amanda’s advice

Hollywood actress Amanda Seyfried has said that it was she who convinced Sarah Jessica Parker to replace Demi Moore in the Linda Lovelace biopic. The Sex and the City star stepped in to play a feminist icon Gloria Steinem after Moore dropped out of the project in January to seek treatment for exhaustion, a website reported.

“(Moore) was ill so she couldn’t show up. When we found out she wasn’t coming to work, we were just like, sh**! But the fact is, she couldn’t come so we had to find somebody else and so I emailed Sarah Jessica Parker.

“I feel like (casting is important) when it comes from a personal point, everything’s so business-y and you have to find some kind of connection in this business if you want to get what you want. I really, really love her so I just emailed her. It worked - something happened - she came, she showed up a couple of days later. And she is in this role,” Seyfried said. — PTI

Over the past few years Gaga has become an inspirational voice. She has touched many through her lyrics and through her own journey towards the recognition and success she has received. Role reversal

Alter ego: Robert Pattinson Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson says his Twilight Saga character Edward Cullen would not like his alter-ego in the new raunchy movie Bel Ami. The 25-year-old actor said his character Georges Duroy in his latest film, couldn’t be more different from one-woman man Cullen, a publication reported.

“I guess there’s something quite fun about Bel Ami, going from Edward to playing some guy who pretty much abuses women to get money out of them. Edward so wouldn’t approve - and I thought that was a funny irony. But the story, independently, is great, so I only thought about the irony afterwards,” he said. Pattinson also says his new character has no redeeming features about him as he doesn’t care who he hurts. “He just doesn’t have a conscience. He’s content to do nothing and thinks everything should just be given to him. But if someone slights him, or directs any insult at him, the most overwhelming energy grabs him and he turns into this absolute devil.” — PTI

Showtime for Neha

Talented one: Neha Janpandit
Talented one: Neha Janpandit

Sweet looking Neha Janpandit is being seen in Sony’s Shubh Vivaah opposite Eijaz. She is glad to have bagged a lead role in the show and hopes that this serial will showcase her talent well.

Why did you choose to do Shubh Vivaah?

I was offered a strong role of the main lead. I realised that the role would give me scope to perform. I didn’t have to think twice about accepting it.

What makes your character Saroj stand out among the sisters in the serial?

I have always played positive roles and the specialty of my character is her strength. She is a simple girl who takes on responsibilities at home and the changes she faces post her marriage.

How is it shooting with Eijaz?

He is a good actor who has been in the industry for a while. Working with him is a pleasure. We are good friends.

You have shot quite a bit in Agra. Share your experience.

Yes we shot major portions on a terrace near Taj Mahal so it could be seen in the background. It was fun to shoot in Agra as it added flavour to the show. It was very cold to shoot but it was fun.

You have also used the local dialect in the show. Was it difficult?

Yes, such little details help actors instantly connect with the audience. My family in the show talks like people in Agra does. We haven’t gone all out but used some words to give a familiar feel.

What has been your claim to fame?

I have done four shows but none lasted for years. People know me as Rani from Wo Rehnewali Mehlon Ki and Nupur of Tere Liye. — HRM
