SAD retains Dera Bassi seat
Dera Bassi, March 6 In the first round of counting, which started with the Zirakpur region, Narinder got a lead of 1,800 votes. In the next four rounds of counting, comprising votes of the Zirakpur region, Sharma maintained the lead of over 11,000 votes which could not be defeated in the counting of votes of the Dera Bassi and Lalru regions. There were 15 rounds of counting in the whole constituency.
There were 200 polling booths out which Sharma maintained lead in most of the booths. The Congress candidate, Jasjit Singh Randhawa, who was a new face for the constituency, got the third position by securing 9,484 votes. Manpreet Kaur Dolly, SAD rebel and daughter of late Akali stalwart Capt Kanwaljit Singh, could secure only 7,563 votes. The BSP candidate, Satish Sharma, polled 5,333 votes while People’s Party of Punjab candidate Bhagwant Singh Baltana received only 2,793 votes. The seat that once had been won by Congress candidate Hansraj Sharma during the anti-Congress wave in 1977, has been witnessing the SAD candidates register victory for the last four elections. This seat, which was earlier known as the Banur assembly seat, had been won by the SAD leader, late Capt Kanwaljit Singh in 1997, 2002, and 2007. His son Jasjit Singh Bunny was elected from the seat after his father’s death in 2009 in the byelection. |

Two bodies found
Ambala, March 6 Sources said that the boy and the girl were residing in a rented house for the past 15 days in the village. The owner of the house, Joginder Singh, told the police that last late night their room was locked from inside and when he did not get any response from them, he got suspicious. He opened the door forcibly and found that the both the victims were lying on bed in unconscious state. Joginder also found a rope, hanging from the roof and informed the police, immediately. The police said that the deceased belonged to Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. Proper identity of the victims could not be known so far. It was not ascertained whether they were a married. The police sent both the bodies to Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantt, for the postmortem examination. The police have informed the Gonda police in this regard |
Man acquitted in suicide case
Chandigarh, March 6 The incident dates back to November, 2010, when Ruby allegedly consumed poison and her body was found at the rear of the petrol station in Sector 9. Based on a suicide note and the complaint by her family, the police booked Sonu in a case of abetment to suicide. Advocate Gagan Aggarwal said the prosecution was not able to prove the handwriting of the girl as hers in the suicide note and there were certain discrepancies which led to Sonu’s acquittal. |

HC relief for 3 student leaders
Chandigarh, March 6 Justice Ranjit Singh has confirmed the bail granted to the three leaders. Booked by the police in a criminal case some three years ago, the trio was out on interim bail. While Gujjar and Sanjay Kumar’s arrest was stayed in 2009, Sandhu’s arrest was put on hold in December, 2008. Taking up the criminal miscellaneous petitions filed by Gujjar and Sanjay Kumar in 2009 against the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Justice Ranjit Singh observed: “The petitioner has already joined investigation. The case was adjourned as the elections in the university were due and to avoid any untoward incident, the petitioner was directed not to enter the university campus. “Now, the elections are over. The order staying the arrest of the petitioner passed on January 12, 2009, is made absolute. The petitioner shall strictly abide by the conditions contained in Section 438(2), CrPC. The petition is accordingly disposed of.” Similar orders were passed on Sandhu’s petition. A case of assault, rioting and intimidation was registered against law student Simranjeet Singh Sandhu, and a member of the Haryana Students’ Association, Gujjar, and Sanjay Kumar after a member of SOPU, Barinder Dhillon, was allegedly beaten up outside PU Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti’s residence. Dhillon was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors attending to him said the victim received 45 stitches at three points on his head. At the time of the incident, Dhillon, and some others had gone to the Sobti’s house to invite him for a cultural programme. When the four were leaving the premises, eight youngster came out of two cars and allegedly started beating them with sticks. The incident was reportedly witnessed by the VC. Reports suggest the VC heard the uproar and came out of his house and saw a few people beating Dhillon with batons. When he tried to intervene, they ran away. |

Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Gill Colony, Manimajra, in his complaint to the police, has said that someone has stolen his motorcycle (CH-04H-3426) from a parking lot of Sector 9 on Saturday. The police has registered a case under Section 379, IPC, in the Sector-3 police station. Manmohan Kaur of Maloya village has alleged that an unidentified person has stolen her scooter (CH-03F-5969) from the back of a food joint in Sector 17 on February 29. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered in the Sector-17 police station. Dharam Singh, a resident of Sector 38, has told the police that an unidentified person has stolen his motor cycle (CH-04J-5681) from his residence on the night of Sunday. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered in the Sector-39 police station. Sanjeev Kumar of Sector 25, has alleged that someone has stolen his motorcycle (CH-04-8089) from Sector 56 on February 24. The police has registered a case.
Caught red-handed
Mohd Chand, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, has complained to the police that Vijay, a native of Jaipur, was allegedly caught red-handed while he was stealing his mobile phone from near Shastri Nagar, Manimajra, on March 5. The accused was arrested under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, and a case has been registered in the Manimajra police station. |

Theft bid at ATM
Chandigarh, March 6 According to the information, the miscreants covered the camera at the ATM with a cloth and damaged another camera before making an unsuccessful attempt to break open the cash box of Later, the police was informed about the incident. A case under Sections 380 and 511 was registered in the Sector 31 police station. “We will recover the CCTV footage and further inquire into the matter,” said Jaspal Singh, Station House Officer, Sector-31 police station. PU Campus, AG Haryana enter semis
Chandigarh, March 6 The Campus boys started the match on an aggressive note and made a dangerous move in the 5th minute. Right winger Harkirat gave a pass to Jaspreet whose powerful shot was well collected by Audit goalkeeper Kulwinder Singh. In a counter move Haryana forward Varinder Kanwar unleashed a powerful shot which hit the goalpost and went out. The ball move from one half to another as the defence of both the teams stood firm not allowing the rivals any liberty to do harm. The Audit players were playing positional and possessive football by making short passes among themselves and the Campus boys were playing long and shot passes. As the action was confined to midfield, the first half failed to produce any goal. In the second half, the teams tried to control the game and made dangerous moves. However, the Campus boys’ efforts proved fruitful when they managed to score the match-winning goal in the 75th minute through Jashanpreet whose shot went into the goal without giving the Audit goalkeeper time to move from his position. Stung by this goal Audit boys tried hard to equalise the score but failed in their attempts and PU Campus won the match by 1-0, earning three valuable points to be at the top position in Pool-B. Pr AG (Audit) Haryana has got the second position. Both the teams have qualified for the semifinals. In the second super league match, Youth Club, Sector 30, beat Sports Club, Sector 23, 3-1. Youth Club were the better side and scored two quick goals in the 28th and 37th minute and the scorer was Arshdeep who scored both goals with solo efforts. After the lemon break, Sports Club tried hard to reduced the margin but their forwards fumbled at the crucial time and missed many golden chances. Right striker Gagan of Sports Club scored with a solo efforts in the 50th minute. Youth Club managed to score the 3rd goal in the dying minutes and the scorer was right winger Tenzen. |

Boxing meet from today, 180 pugilists to be in action
Chandigarh, March 6 Over 180 top boxers, most of them of national and international fame, will take part in the latest 10 weights of senior-divison, said Dr CK Jerath, president of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association, while talking to media. Army Sports Institute, Pune, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Manipur and Maharashtra are among the nineteen teams, invited to participate, he said. |
CLTA trainees continue stir
Chandigarh, March 6 They had been demanding the reinstatement of coaching director Gurvarinder Singh, who resigned on Saturday, alleging humiliation at the hands of the management. A number of trainees sat on dharna in front of the CLTA building today and boycotted pro-ace sessions. They would continue the agitation for Gurvarinder’s reinstatement, they said. In the afternoon, their parents and guardians joined them. Gurvarinder was a good coach, under whose guidance trainees had been excelling, claimed Gurcharan Singh. Two grandchildren of his had been getting training at the CLTA for the last six years. His resignation from the CLTA was a great loss to budding players, he added. After his resignation Gurvarinder confirmed that he had differences of opinion with chief operating officer (COO) Megh Raj and was subjected to humiliation every other day. It was difficult to convince the COO on technical issues regarding the game as he was from a non-technical background, he further said. On the other hand, the CLTA authorities termed it the use of innocent children by disgruntled elements. They asked honorary secretary Jasjit Singh, to conduct an inquiry into the matter. In a communique to the media, the authorities claimed that the executive committee of the CLTA accepted Gurvarinder’s resignation during the meeting which was conducted yesterday. The committee decided to look for a competent and suitable person to be appointed coaching director, they said in the communique. Chief coach Roman Singh had been deputed coaching director on a temporary basis. |
