Simply complicated!
Singer Mika talks about his successful run in the industry and what makes him
popular
How does bagging a Filmfare Award matter! How much of a deal is it to work with
the best music directors in the industry! And how does it mean a lot to sing for
A-list actors! Minus everything that qualifies one as a talented playback
singer; Mika is there and on the top. You need a confirmation? Ask any DJ or a
party-hopper how many times Tu Mera Hero is played; for that matter, the scene
isn’t very different at weddings. “Fans tell me that a party begins with the
song and ends with it. To a singer, this is the biggest compliment,” says
Mika, the voice behind the superhit track of the movie Desi Boyz. The song is
just the beginning of his list of 30 hit tracks in the last one year. He was in
Chandigarh on Wednesday to perform at the opening of World Series Hockey
tournament. Mika doesn’t mind bragging about his success story. Humility is
not a word meant for him. Neither when it comes to his hit songs, nor his
passions. “I recently bought two camels because I just wanted to.” He goes
on, “I also bought an island in Damdama Lake and a small forest near Delhi.”
He once felt the same for his small army of bodyguards…remember when they
bashed up Rakhi Sawant’s boyfriend after that kiss incident? “I don’t have
any now, but I am happy that I triggered off this trend in Bollywood.” Mika
set off another trend in the industry – that of nasal singing. While that’s
what people call it, he says that’s his style, which was soon followed by
Himesh Reshammiya and Salim Sulaiman, “It’s my style and if people have
liked it then that’s enough for me. Take the example of Kolaveri Di; people
liked it even if music critics didn’t.” He also gets the credit for making
Punjabi singers venture into Bollywood and he is happy to quote the recent
examples of Babbu Mann and Daljit Dosanjh. Mika is next working upon Ganpath
version 2. The first was a superhit, which encouraged him to even write the
second. “It is important to realise that none of my songs are the title
number. Tu Mera Hero was the fourth track; Mauja Hi Mauja of Jab We Met was the
second track and same is the case with Dhinka-Chika of Ready. My songs
eventually become bigger than the films.” He hasn’t worked for the big
banners, but something he resolves to do this year is sing for Amitabh Bachchan.
Though there is nothing in the pipeline, he is sure that something will work
out. Minus any pretensions, while he loves to boast of what he does and what
he owns, there’s something he doesn’t readily talk about. Nudge him a bit;
even then the details come through reluctantly. “I run an NGO in Delhi by the
name of Divine Touch, where 300 girls are given vocational training annually.”
And that is where it ends. He again hops back to his favourite topic – I, Me,
Myself. “I might be the bad boy of Bollywood, but I am not that bad.
Controversies follow me, but that is because I am successful. All my songs are a
hit…” Rest goes on and on! ashima@tribunemail.com

Poetic musings
Well-known poet Jaswant Deed whose latest book of poetry Aawagavn has hit the
market talks about his creative process
Sahitya Akademi award recipient Jaswant Deed may not be a
prolific poet, but words remain the cause cèlébre of his life. Na mein aadi,
na anant daa jaaeya, naa mein jamna marna, Mein taan akharan de junein hi
aawagaman cha rahena. Others may pray for moksha, he seeks no respite from the
web of words and would like to be reborn a writer time and again. So he
continues to create the poetic imagery of the modern world, the struggle of
contemporary man, man-woman relationships and much more. On love, his stance is
candid, "There is no permanence in love. If first love is special, the
second, third and fourth can be equally exhilarating." His latest book
Aaawagavn takes on from the last one, Kamandal, and revolves around similar
concerns, both metaphysical and physical. More recently spirituality laces his
poems, but it is never ever devoid of reality of life. And his realism focuses
on today's world, of which we all are a part, not some utopian chimera. In a
short poem he talks of ephemeral friendships based on mobile phones, in yet
another he shares the dilemmas of NRIs settled abroad. As his son is trying to
get Deed a permanent residency card in Canada, one poem is dedicated to the
quest and the futility of chasing dreams in foreign lands. In fact, much of
what he writes, he admits unabashedly starts from I as he reasons, "How can
I do justice to the experiences of others? I must first internalise what I
write." Of course, he also understands that poetry is not an exercise in
self-indulgence and "must transcend the I." As he writes in the poem
Leekhtan — Lekhak turde jaanege, peechon pad da rahega koi, jad da rahega
ehanan andar apni tasveer (After writers are no more, readers will find a
connect and see their own image in the poetry.) But are there readers of
Punjabi literature? He nods an emphatic yes and adds, "It is a myth that
nobody reads. There are enough readers, moreso among the younger
generation." And it's for this discerning tribe Hai, mera pathak, hai, Mein
us layi apna lahu jod da rehnda that he word paints the world he is trying to
understand and grapple with. On critical acclaim and applause he is a trifle
brutal. Though he has been honoured with prestigious awards, including Shiromani
Punjabi Kavi Samman, he asserts that he doesn't write for critics. Or for
entertainment and garnering wahs wahs! Though some of his books like Kamandal
have gone into second edition, readership, he is adamant, is not the barometer
of good writing. By that logic he feels writers of pulp fiction who sell in
lakhs would be the greatest. Instead he opines, "Only words that create a
dilemma, a conflict is everlasting." Will he survive, only time will be a
witness? But nothing will deter him from staring at the world in the eye and
from delving deep within — in contemplation and self-introspection. As for
words, Lahu andar shabad, lagataaar aren't they an inseparable part of him
anyway? nonika@tribunemail.com

Sporty story
Neha Dhupia, in Chandigarh for World Series Hockey tournament, says she will
be seen a lot this year
When was the last time you heard this one…there are only two
things that sell in our country — cricket and Shah Rukh Khan. Well, looks like
a long time, for we had many other things that made a foray into the list.
Politics, of course, rushed to secure a place. Revising the statement…it is
the Khans (all kinds), sports and Bollywood that sells. So, raise a toast to the
much-ignored game of the country, as it comes out from the hibernation with
World Series Hockey tournament. We bumped into a bold and beautiful actress who
too is all set to come out of ‘missing in action’ phase — Neha Dhupia. All
ready to set the stage on fire with her performance, Neha is undoubtedly a loyal
cheer girl when it comes to sports! “Cricket is one sport that get a lot of
publicity in the country, which a great thing. It is nice to see that other
sports like hockey are also being given a fair chance,” says the actress who
is warmed up with the welcome that she receives in Punjab, whenever she is here.
It is imperative to mention the little secret, which is no longer a hush-hush
thing — had it not been for acting, Neha would have been an athlete! All you
directors out there…here is some unexplored sporty talent! “It would be a
dream come true for me if I was to do a movie based on sports,” she
smiles. Every word is real and so is her growth in Bollywood. “I admit that I
made a couple of mistakes in my career, but I definitely learnt a lot from them.
I have definitely become choosy about the projects that I do. However, there is
a different way to look at it as well. Sometimes, quantity takes precedence over
quality and at other times it is vice-versa,” says the actress, who tells us
that we will be seeing more of her this year. “I am shooting for Raftaar with
Emraan Hashmi; a movie based on media and journalists. The other one is Maximum,
opposite Sonu Sood. The movie is based on two encounter cops. It also stars
Nasserudin Shah,” adds Neha, looks radiant and ready to take on anything that
spells like impossible. So, when we mention about the bold, daring and seductive
role of Vidya Balan, the actress has a neat reply. “With all due respect to
Vidya Balan, I feel I have always been ahead of my times.” Rest is for you to
understand; you can go down in Bollywood history and hunt for the word Julie. It
says it all! jasmine@tribunemail.com

‘80s allure
Chitrangada Singh, who has done an item-song for Shirish Kunder’s Joker, says
her look in the song is inspired by Madhuri Dixit’s in the song Humko aajkal
hai from Sailaab.
“I don’t like to call it an item song, it is a dance
performance that I have done for the film. It’s called Kaafirana and it is
very rustic, very 1980s in its look and it is a little bit of Madhuri from
Sailaab, that’s the kind of look that we have been inspired from,” said
Chitrangada. “It has a bit of ‘laavni’ in it, it’s fantastic,” the
35-year-old said at the unveiling of the cover page of men’s magazine FHM,
which features her. Chitrangada, who has adorned the cover page of various
magazines, says print photo shoot is challenging, but at the same time
comfortable also. “I think what’s good about shooting a print picture is
that you have to do so much more within that one frame or one shot. You have to
look the part, you have to have the right expression, everything has to be
perfect,” said Chitrangada. “But at the same time, I think there is a lot
more control when you are doing print so you are lot comfortable. If there is
something wrong you can get it fixed later that is not the final thing going
out. Whereas if you do a film, there is one long shot that you have to give and
that’s it,” she added. Chitrangada was last seen in Desi Boyz and is
currently working on “I, Me Aur Main opposite John Abraham and a Sudhir Mishra
film opposite Arjun Rampal. — IANS

The year ahead
If your birthday is March 1...
March will
bring better results if you have recently contested elections. Politicians will
enhance their prestige in the public eye. For businessmen and professionals, a
strong Mercury with Sun and Jupiter provides courage to brave all odds. Those in
service will have a satisfactory year. You'll be more eloquent than usual and be
able to win over new partners and improve your social life by going to new
places. A minor misunderstanding could lead to problems with your beloved; try
to clarify this immediately. March is for fewer activities; you may find
inactiveness at work front as well as in financial matters. Personal
relationships too might remain passive. The plans or strategies executed by you
might not bring expected results. You have a lot of desires to fulfill, so do
not feel disappointed. You'll grab all great work opportunities as they come
along and do well, as you'll be very shrewd and fearless. Those born after 1970
will be malicious towards a co-worker. Haste makes waste, but he who hesitates
is lost. Listen to the advice of an older and wiser friend. Wait
until things settle down before you make any commitment. You cannot run away
from the truth now that you have come to a turning point. As one door
closes, another will open. Your choices will be difficult. You may
argue with your spouse over trivial matters. Children may indulge in deeds,
which you may not approve of. Peals of wedding bells may be audible. Brothers
and sisters may lend a helping hand in April. Your financial position will
improve a little and you will be able to keep-up our commitments. You may have
to incur extra expenditure because of an auspicious event in your
family. Friends appear needy, especially Cancer, Leo and Aquarius. They might
be a small liability, especially Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Capricorn and a 'great
help', especially Taurus and Sagittarius. Barring minor ailments, this will be a
disease-free year. Take good care of your diet. Colourful personalities catch
your eye and romance flourishes. Mood: In need of both balance and discretion.
Compatible signs: Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius. Lucky colours: White, red,
yellow. Lucky days: Sunday. Lucky numbers: 2, 3, 12, 19, 23. Lucky gem: Ruby.
Lucky flower: Rose. Suggestion on birthday: Donate eight yellow ladoos or chana
daal to beggars or in a religious place.
Luke Mably (Thomas Luke Mably) was born on Monday, March 1, 1976, in London and

A glimpse of Manjit's world
The art and life of artist Manjit Bawa will come alive at Government Museum and Art Gallery on March 2
The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi is organising an interactive session, The Art and Life of Manjit Bawa, with curator, art critic and author Ina Puri. The national award-winning documentary film Meeting Manjit will also be screened at the auditorium of the Government Museum and Art Gallery on this occasion. Meeting Manjit is based on three parallel journeys-the filmmaker's own journey through the world of Manjit, Puri's, who scans the change in Manjit's style of painting and Manjit's own, who talks to himself, sometimes of his present days and sometimes going back to the past. With exquisite visuals, this documentary is a rare presentation of an artist's life, subconscious and its expression on canvas. It has been treated in a unique way by director Buddhadeb Dasgupta, who himself has done the commentary. He talks about his experiences in Dalhousie, where Manjit had a studio and spent a lot of time painting. There are two other voice-overs in the film - one of Puri and the other of Manjit himself. Ina talks about Manjit's life, paintings and the beautiful bonding that they shared. Puri is an author, columnist, curator and documentarian. Her books include In Black and White (a definitive biography of the painter Manjit Bawa) and Journey with a Hundred Strings (the memoir of Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma). She has edited Faces of Indian Art (on studio spaces of artistes in collaboration with Nemai Ghosh), Raj Bhavan of Kolkata: Two Hundred Years of Grandeur, Whispered Legacy: A Retrospective of Abani Sen, Mythical Universe: Jayasri Burman, Rooted Landscapes: The Art of Rini Dhumal and Manjit Bawa: Life & Times for Lalit Kala Akademi's Readings Series. Puri's Image Ina Production's produced Meeting Manjit received the prestigious Rajat Kamal award.

Win-some tips
satish narula Spring is the time when the winter annuals are at their best. This is also the time when garden and flower shows and competitions are held. Did you ever think of participating? Try your luck this time. Who knows your efforts may bear fruits and become the winner. Only follow these tips. It is important to strictly follow the rules of the show and for this there are brochures available with the organisers. For example, if you want to participate in cut-flower section and you are required to display two stems in stock, then keep only two. Putting more may disqualify you. The vases are provided by the organisers. Choose the ones that are not leaking. Also, see that the base of the vase is broad and heavy. This is due to the fact that blooms like dahlia, stock etc are very heavy-headed with large twigs and that make the vase unstable. However, do not try to make the vase stable by sand etc as by doing this you will be reducing the water space and the blooms sag in no time, even before the judges arrive. While displaying the specimen, make sure that the blooms are facing the judges. Make sure that the specimen selected by you are not insect infested. The petals should not be blemished or fragmented. The diseased blooms or foliage should also not be displayed. Always carry more than the required number of blooms in a bucket to the exhibition site before display. This is to use the extra specimen in case of damage. One should also try to put foliage in the vase with the bloom specimens. This gives the authenticity to the specimen and also the stuffed foliage gives support to the specimen in the vase. However, see to it that the foliage is not diseased or blemished. Of late, it is seen that some other gardeners display dyed bloom, for example, the 'green or blue' gladiolus, 'coloured' tuberose etc. This is not right. Your specimen stands disqualified as the bloom with artificially dye are liable to be rejected. It is better to consult the specialists before display as to what criteria are to be observed and select and display accordingly. You will stand a better chance of winning. Cool comfort
There are very few who have drop-dead gorgeous looks and a great resume. After his graduation from Panjab University, this lad moved to London and completed his specialisation from the London School of Economics. Prabhjot Singh Makkar, all of 21, and already taking care of his family business, wears his turban with pride. We find out more about his style and more. Your sense of style is… Cool and understated. I like to keep in trend with the latest fashion but not at the cost of comfort and quality. Latest addition in your wardrobe... It’s a custom-made shoe that I had designed with blue punched suede leather. Brand freak or street junkie? Neither. I wear whatever rocks my style boat—be it from the high street or top brands. Choose a look—sporty, glamorous or chic Glamorous or elegant for me. Your style icon would be… My father. He is the most stylish person in our family; everything I've learnt about style has been by copying him as a child and even now as an adult. So who’s the worst-dressed celebrity around? I'd rather not say. I judge myself and leave others to do their own thing. One fashion trend you just don't understand? Sikhs wearing caps instead of turbans. Turban makes one look distinct, unique and we shouldn’t let that go. Your take on accessories I'm personally into watches and have a pretty big collection of them. I guess a watch makes a man feel powerful and in control of the most inevitable and immovable things in our lives - the passage of time. One thing that boosts your confidence: When my parents tell me how I make them proud, more so everyday. Colour of love
A group of students and professionals come together in an attempt to stand up on their own two artistic feet
The ideal would be to invite perhaps an IAS or an IPS official for the inauguration of an art exhibition. This is where these students differ. "Our life models, who have taught us art and sketching since those early days are inaugurating this exhibit," says Ajay Kalwaniya, founder of the Art Corporates. One of these models is an 80-year-old and is currently residing in an old-age home. "It is just our way of showing our respect to them," he smiles, showing us his work, comprising photographs of his niece and Indian beauties. Put together by Art Corporates, a group of students and professionals, on at Government Museum and Art Gallery, the exhibition aims to provide a forum for young students to showcase their talent. "Since this is a self-sponsored event, our aim is to establish a name for us," he says, sipping his tea. The participating students have some great experience in the art industry. Ismatpal Singh, also a state-level folk dancer, and the man behind the interiors of Smoke House Deli, brings a host of his work to the exhibition. "My prime agenda is to remove the business tag from art. Yes, we are looking at sales, but not at selling the maximum number of paintings, but to showcase our talent and skills," Ajay says. Another aspect that binds these youngsters together is their current place of work. Introduced to Corporate Infocom, a Delhi-based firm, where most of these students work, Ajay felt the need to not stay focused on work, but showcase their talent as well. "It is the firm, where all of us work and are commercial website owners," Ajay adds. In between the colours and the patterns, it is the love for art that comes alive. Missing report
Handsome Gaurav Chopra, who became an integral part of Color’s Uttaran, will
now be missing from the show. He explains why
Are you leaving the show? No. I
am going on a 40-day break to shoot for a film. I talked about my leave with the
producers and thankfully things worked out well. My character Rathore will be
missing from the show for a while. How will the story accommodate your
absence? Rathore has been searching for his son and now knows Ichcha’s son
and his son is the same person. He is angry and will take steps to punish the
guilty. But eventually he will go away to find peace and proof. Watch out for
some explosive scenes. When will you return? Well, on TV nothing is permanent.
So, I hope when I return, my character too returns on screen. How has been the
experience with Uttaran? I am glad to say despite Veer and Tapasya’s
absence, the show became number one on the channel. We are all very proud. Tell
us about your film It is an exciting project for me and I wouldn’t be able to
divulge anymore. Any plan for taking your relationship with Moni
forward? Well, when the time comes everyone will know. — HRM

Katrina gets her dream role!
Katrina Kaif is playing a double role in the
remake of Seeta Aur Geeta. Katrina will have to make time from her busy schedule
to do this movie. The Sippy family feud has been resolved so the movie can go on
floors. Abhay Deol and Akshay Kumar will be her co-stars.
A source says,
“This year, Katrina is busy with Ek Tha Tiger, a romantic film with SRK, and
Dhoom 3. Earlier, she had no idea what was happening to the remake. Now, she
will have to make time for it. The Sippys are meeting with Sunil Bohra soon and
everything will be finalised. The family problems between the Sippys have been
resolved and the cousins will work together on the project.” Katrina has
wanted to do a remake of the Hema Malini blockbuster for a long time. The movie
was announced in 2011 but the film could not go on the floors due to rights
issues. Katrina is a fan of Hema Malini and wanted to prove her talent and comic
timing by doing this movie. Moreover, she has a comfortable chemistry with
Akshay Kumar so they would have done well in the film. Her pairing with Abhay
Deol is fresh and they would be interesting to watch. Of course, the movie will
be adapted to a modern day scenario. It will be Katrina’s first double role
and definitely quite challenging! The movie will release in 2013.

follower told her she “dresses like white trash” and urged her “to die”,
reported a publication online. After seeing the vile messages, Cyrus replied,
“You have nothing better to do than hate? That saddens me. I’m surrounded by
love. I’m sorry for whatever happened to make you so bitter. I won’t
tolerate someone telling me to die.” Cyrus went on to urge Twitter chiefs to
take action against users who post nasty comments. “I think Twitter needs to
take some responsibility and make it a safe environment,” she wrote. —

Jennifer Aniston sent Angelina Jolie flowers?
Former Friends star Jennifer Aniston reportedly sent Angelina Jolie flowers to
congratulate her on her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey. The
pair have been pitted against each other since Brad Pitt, 48, left Aniston in
2005 and started a relationship with Jolie, 36, who he met on the sets of their
film Mr and Mrs Smith, reported a website.
“Brad Pitt sent Jen a copy of
Ange’s new film In the Land of Blood and Honey. Jen sent Ange flowers and a
note telling her how beautifully directed it was. It’s a sign that things are
thawing between them. Jen’s so happy she thinks all her past heartbreak might
have been worth it for her to have what she does now,” a source said. Aniston

Lowest common factor
Anne Hathaway, says she empathises with troubled actress Lindsay Lohan
One Day star Anne Hathaway, who recently got engaged to longtime boyfriend Adam
Shulman, says she empathises with troubled actress Lindsay Lohan because she too
has made the same mistakes. “Lindsay Lohan and I have more in common than
people think. We’ve all done things we shouldn’t. It is just that I did
stuff at college when nobody knew about it, so I’m not a saint. I wasted time
doing self-destructive things,” Hathaway said. The 29-year-old, who will soon
be seen as Cat woman in the upcoming Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises, also
said she grew out of her wilder days because of her mother, reported a website.
“I found you can only dance on so many table tops. I got all that out of my
system and I am healthy and grounded thanks to my mother,” she added. Lohan
has faced a number of legal troubles in the past few years. — PTI

Don’t be judgmental: Julia Roberts
Hollywood actress Julia Roberts says young stars should be allowed to make mistakes and not be judged so quickly.
The 44-year-old also said she is bothered that the youngsters are not given a fair chance to deal with their problems when in the public eye, as compared to when she started in the business decades ago. “There’s the express elevator and there’s rehab. It’s so awful. Nobody gets a fair trial-and-error period that everybody deserves and everybody needs. The business is so different. “I was on a crowded street, and somebody noticed me, and then another person noticed. Somebody said as we were walking past, ‘Oh, that’s Julia Roberts. We all just kind of kept going, and then my son Phinnaeus said, ‘Yeah, my mom’s Julia Robinson’. “That’s what gives you perspective. It could be Robinson, it could be Johnson, because it has nothing to do with me as a person,” Roberts said.

Women love to date, no matter who pays
It seems when it comes to dating, women just love it. A British study has found women to be taking the lead when it comes to finding love, with one-fourth of them dating three or more men at the same time.
Research shows that the average single female is regularly seeing at least two prospective partners at one time and they date five men a year. According to the study carried out by restaurant chain TGI Friday, however, only 18 percent of the fairer sex thought the man should pay during the date. Half of the men agreed, saying that woman should contribute or go halves. Nearly a third of females said traditional dating rules no longer applied, with a quarter having asked a man out rather than waiting for him to make a move. Also, one in four in a relationship would consider proposing, with nine in 10 men wanting girlfriends to do so, according to the study. —
