Experts to dwell on emerging paradigm in financial sector

The School of Applied Management in collaboration with the National Stock Exchange of India will organise a one-day UGC-sponsored national seminar on “Emerging Paradigm in Indian Financial Sector” on February 28. The seminar aims at providing a platform to academicians, research scholars, managers and management students to develop and contribute papers from various facets of financial sector.

The event will bring together executives to meet, discuss, and exchange views and experiences on various challenges and opportunities faced by the Indian financial sector.

Prof GS Batra said Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University Dr Jaspal Singh would grace the occasion while

T Venkata Rao from the National Stock Exchange of India would be the chief guest. The key speaker of the seminar will be Dr Sachin Vernekar, director, Bhartiya Vidya Peeth University, Delhi. Harmohan Singh Walia, chairman, Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin Committee, Sydney, Australia, will be the guest of honour.

Dr Manjit Singh, organising secretary of the event, said about 40 research papers had been received on the wide ranging areas like “Micro-Infrastructure of Financial Markets”, “Global Financial Crisis”, “Role of FDI and FIIs in Indian Financial Markets”, “Risk Management in Financial Sector”, “Human Resource”, “International Business and Operations Management Issues in Financial Service Sector”. The delegates from different parts of the country are expected to take part
in the event.

Rupinder adjudged best athlete

Dera Bassi, February 26
DS Gurukul College of Education, Gholumajra, organised an atheletics meet in the college premises on February 25. On this occasion college principal Dr (Mrs) Satinder Dhillon and director Surjit Brar were the chief guests in the morning and evening sessions respectively.

The programme started with a parade with the principal of the college flagging off the opening ceremony. Girl students of the college participated with great enthusiasm in events like the 100 m race, 200 m race, shot put, javelin throw, long jump, tug of war, three leg race, lemon and spoon race. About 150 students participated in the meet.

Rupinder stood first in the 100 m race, followed by Harmeet Kaur and Sunita. In javelin throw, Poonam stood first, Gurpreet second and Harmeet secured the third postion.

Rupinder was adjudged best athlete. Medals and trophies were given away by principal Satinder Dhillon and director Surjit Brar.

100 papers presented

The International Conference on Computing and Communication (ICACC-2012) concluded today at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib. Dr Pawan Kapoor, director, CSIO, Chandigarh, was the chief guest at the valedictory session. Approximately 100 papers were presented in eight technical sessions by delegates from India and abroad on widely diversified areas of computer science.

Dr AP Singh of SLIET, Longowal, and Dr RS Kler of Thapar University chaired the technical sessions of the conference.

Dr MS Grewal, principal, BBSBEC, proposed the vote of thanks. He also thanked sponsors of the conference. Prof Baljit Singh, coordinator of the conference, appreciated the efforts of the department.

IT fest kicks off

IT Fest, 2012, kicked off at Mata Gujri College here today. Usha R Sharma, Commissioner, Technical Education and Industrial Training, inaugurated the event.

She called upon students to develop communication skills and get technically sound to compete at international level.

Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, director, education, SGPC, said the committee had been focusing on imparting education to students in rural areas.

Director principal of the college Dr Jatinder Singh Sidhu said the goal of the college was to enable students to be good entrepreneurs.

An IT exhibition was held. Various prominent companies displayed their products.

Activities like website development, quiz, paper presentation, poster presentation and many other competitions were also organised.

Harsharan Singh, Sandeep Kaur adjudged best athletes

The 19th annual athletics meet of the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College concluded here today. The closing ceremony was presided over by Balwinder Singh Bhundar, member of the college’s managing trust. Harsharan Singh of the Tsunami house was adjudged the best athlete (Boys) and Sandeep Kaur of Tornado house was adjudged the best athlete (Girls). Hurricane house won the overall trophy, followed Tornado house (second and Tsunami house (third).

Speaking on the occasion, Bhundar expressed satisfaction that the students showed such interest in sports activities. He added that it was a matter of joy that the girls are taking part in sports with so much of zeal and enthusiasm.

Three booked for fraud

Mohali, February 26
The police has registered a case of cheating and forgery against Jarnail Singh Grewal, Karnail Singh Grewal and Kanwaljeet Kaur, all residents of Sector 71, on a complaint of an NRI, Malkiat Singh Dhaliwal. The complainant alleged that while he was running his business in Canada, he came to India in 2001 along with Jarnail Singh and purchased a JCB machine for running business in India. Though Malkiat Singh had paid the entire amount which was Rs 15 lakh, the profit was never shared with him. A joint account was opened to deposit Rs 50,000 per month but the amount was never deposited.

In the meantime, Malkiat Singh thought of buying a plot and deposited Rs 22 lakh in his joint account which was shared with Jarnail Singh. Jarnail Singh was also told to sell the JCB machine for buying the plot. The suspect went to Canada and told Malkiat Singh that they had purchased a one kanal plot in Sector 69 in his name.

But the plot was never bought in the name of Malkiat Singh. On the basis of the complaint, the police has registered a case under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC at the Phase VIII police station.

Cyclist dies in accident

Chandigarh, February 26
Jatinder Kumar (27) received serious injuries in an accident and later died last night. A scooter coming from the wrong side hit his bicycle at Sector 43 here.

The cyclist was on way to Kajheri when he was hit by the scooter, being driven by 22-year-old Amandeep Kaushal. Amandeep was driving the scooter (PB65B-1236) on the wrong side.

The victim received serious head injuries and was taken to the GMCH at Sector 32. He was later referred to the PGI, where he was declared brought dead. Amandeep was arrested and later released on bail.

Opening to be a star-studded affair
World Series Hockey will see performances by Saif Ali Khan, Mika, Neha Dhupia

The opening of the upcoming World Series Hockey tournament will see participation of stars like Saif Ali Khan, Mika, Neha Dhupia, singer Harshdeep Kaur, and many others.

According to the organisers, the stars will also perform and entertain the crowd. “We have put together a star-studded opening ceremony to match the scale of any global sporting event. This is a first for hockey in India and the grand opening will be a perfect cocktail of unmatched entertainment and a top drawer sporting action," said Yannick Colaco, COO of Nimbus Sport.

Wizcraft International Director Sabbas Joseph said, “We have always been associated with some of the biggest entertainment events in the world and the grand opening ceremony of Bridgestone World Series Hockey is an extension of our commitment to delight the spectators with a scintillating display. This is just the boost hockey required and I am glad Wizcraft will play an important role in launching a landmark sporting property like WSH.”

The eight venues for the inaugural edition of the league are Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Jalandhar, Mumbai and Pune. Chandigarh Comets will face-off against Bhopal Badshahs in the first tie of the tournament on their home ground.

250 aspirants participate in cricket talent hunt

Kings XI Punjab has tied up with Indraprastha, All India Sports Foundation for presenting India’s first ever cricket based reality show. The show aims at providing a platform for budding cricketers to showcase their talent in front of viewers. While nearly 250 players participated in the selection process for Punjab and Himachal teams today at the cricket stadium in Sector 16, many more are expected to come for the next trial scheduled next month, said Rohini Rajdev, chairperson of the show.

Selection meets will be held to cover 300 schools, colleges and coaching centres across India with renowned cricket representatives like Irfan and Yusuf Pathan, Kirti Aazad, Ishant Sharma. The cricketers will be chosen in two categories - Under 16 and Under 22 - in the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Bihar, Jharkhand, Bhubaneshwar, Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, UP, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. The selected participants will be judged on the basis of their performances by the cricket gurus. UTV Bindass viewers can also participate in the event through voting and the contestant who receives the maximum votes will be declared as the ‘Cricket Champ'. The winner of the show will receive a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and the top 10 players will get an opportunity to be a part of the IPL coaching, where they will be coached by some of the most renowned names in ricket, said Rajdev.

Godrej & Boyce crush IREO to win title

Fine batting performance by Inderjeet (51 runs) enabled Godrej & Boyce to score a comfortable victory over IREO in the final match of the second Proflex Cup being organised by the Cricket Federation of Haryana here today.

Kewal Dhingra, media advisor to Haryana Chief Minister, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Batting first, IREO could only score 146 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 25 overs. Anjeev Lohia (80) and Vipin Verma (39) were the top scorers for the team. For Godrej, Charanjeet and Vijay pal picked up 2 wickets each.

In reply, Godrej lost their first wicket on the very first ball of the innings; but with the help of Kulvinder Romi (47) and Inderjeet (51) they were able to win the final match.

Godrej and Boyce achieved the target in just 22nd over with six wickets to spare. Kulvinder Romi (Godrej) was declared man of the match.

Hole-in-one feat achieved thrice in a month

Three Tricity golfers - JS Maggu, Saahil Joshi and Brig (retd) DS Thukral - got a hole-in-one within a span of one month at Panchkula Golf Club. This is considered a rear feat in the game, something not every golfer is fortunate enough to achieve. There are several golfers, who despite having played the game for years, are not able to get a hole-in-one.

However, there are others who are lucky enough to achieve the feat twice or thrice in their golfing carrers. At Panchkula, three golfers, all members of the club, have had a hole-in-one within a period of one month, on the same 13th, at a distance of 180 yards. All three have been playing golf for more than 10 years and this is the first hole-in-one for all of them. This has never happened before in the tricity, they claimed.

Coaching camp for golfers

Panchkula, February 26
After holding three coaching camps earlier, another European Golf Teachers Federation (EGTF) camp for all age groups, will be conducted at the Panchkula Golf Club next month.

With a view to promote golf in the region and to give an opportunity to everyone to learn the game in a systematic manner, the 8-day coaching camp for children, women and men will be conducted from March 22, said the manager of the club.

All aspects of the game, such as grip, aim, alignment, stance, posture, hitting, chipping and putting, will be taught to members as well as non-member learners at the camp .

Those willing to learn the finer nuances of the game and interested to enrol at the coaching camp can register themselves with the EGTF certified coach at the club, said the manager.
