Two’s company, for sure
The much-in-love couple Genelia and Riteish Deshmukh are happy promoting their film Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya
Mona

Genelia is every inch the bubbly, energetic girl she mostly plays on screen. But behind that cheerful visor lies a head firm on her shoulders. Newly-wed, one can see mehandi still on her hands and feet, bindi in place, a sparkling square rock sitting pretty on her ring finger and dazzling payals…Genelia talks about living in the glamorous world of filmdom.

A national-level football player and state-level athlete; how did acting happen? "It was just chance. Someone spotted me at a wedding and the very next day I was acting," says Genelia. Once in it, she has given her best shot be it Hindi or Telugu, Tamil, Kannada or Malayalam film industry. Enjoying every moment in the field, Genelia is here forever, despite the challenges.

"The biggest challenge is that one needs to be available 24X7. The shoot could be at midnight or four in the morning and can continue for the whole day as well as the night. Howsoever down and out one is feeling, one needs to perform," says Genelia who is happy with the adulation one receives as an actor.

Inspired by her mum in real life, Genelia likes to take one day at a time and is sure of life. "I am an easy-going person. But at the same time, I am aware of what's happening around."

Cool dude

Riteish Deshmukh, known for his comic timing onscreen, looks a little under the weather. A tough day? "The whole month, yaar," he says. What follows reveals the lesser-known side to the actor's personality. An avid reader, Riteish likes Dan Brown, Khaled Hosseini and Mark Billingham.

Spiked hair, jeans ripped at the knee, he talks about his journey in the film world. "A movie is not just about its actors. From director to editor, it's team effort of some 100 plus people. The fate of the movie decides the fate of everyone involved. So one feels responsible for each thing, right from acting to promoting," he says.

Riteish believes in giving his best shot each time. He will next be seen in Houseful 2 and Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum.

Leading from the front

Riteish and Genelia, the newly wed couple is busy promoting their upcoming film Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. A romcom, the film is shot in real locations. Riteish does the talking, "It's more of romance than comedy." Shot around Chandigarh, Patiala and Manali, the locations play a major part in the film. " The scenic beauty of Manali was breathtaking as was feel of old royal times in Patiala."

The film hits the screens on February 24.

Cultural connect
Japanese dancers teaching Kathak in Tokyo and Dutch percussionist giving tabla lessons in Amsterdam — it all spells hope for Indian art globally, says eminent art critic Shanta Serbjeet
Mona

Shanta Serbjeet "Whatever we have carried of our rich heritage, in the muddle around, is too large to be ignored. Things are about to change and sure for better," says Shanta Serbjeet Singh, known art critic and vice chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.

In Chandigarh, on Sunday as part of Natyanjali, a festival of music, dance and drama presentations based on Rabindranath Tagore's works in collaboration with Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, Shanta stresses that art is the most significant part of life, but, sadly it's not valued as much.

"Airport in Rome is named after the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci, but, we do not even have lanes named after the artists," says Shanta Serbjeet. "But true art will flourish regardless," she says in the same breath. She cites example of Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, who sings in the tradition of Mian Tansen. "Even at the age of 106 (yes) he still performs and also teaches children. True artistes will continue with their work for they are driven for it. But at least what we can do is, give them some recognition,” she says.

A cultural activist and an eminent art critic for three decades and now at the helm of affairs at Sangeet Natak Akademi, Shanta Serbjeet is not only carrying forward the work done by the Akademi but also trying to explore more in the areas like documentation and research. From getting scholarships for Naga girls learning Kathak to awards for artistes across the country and Natyanjali, she is doing all that's in her purview.

Art scene might not be as heartening as we would want to see. Kamal Tewari, chairman, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi says, "There is lack of clear cut cultural policy. As an autonomous body, the experts at the Akademi are showing a direction."

All for the cultural unity and diversity that our country represents, Shanta Serbjeet says, "What better example of cultural unity can we have than Naga girls doing Kathak in a country fraught with insurgency?"

And, why Tagore for the festival? "I realise a whole generation has grown up not knowing Tagore," says Shanta Serbjeet who is one of the representative of many those artistes who are working in the Akademi for carrying forward the legacy and creating consciousness for art.

Test drive for Agent Vinod

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan put his speeding skills to test here as he took a blazing red Ferrari for a spin around a local driving centre. The 41-year-old actor was in town Saturday to promote his Rs 50 crore venture, 'Agent Vinod', which releases on March 22 in the UAE.

"Agent Vinod is a spy-action film and there are many car-chases so I asked my director if we could have a flashy car in that too," said Saif, who took several lessons to master the art of making car-chase sequences look authentic on-screen.

"Apart from learning how to drive cars and bikes fast, I learnt how to jump off high buildings too," he said. He travelled to Vietnam to learn martial arts in preparation for his stunt-filled role in the film, also starring girlfriend Kareena Kapoor. "It's not Mr And Mrs Smith and it's not a cheesy Bond rip-off. It is about a RAW agent who has his own personality. Yes, it has influences from various films - it's a little bit Bond, little bit Jason Bourne and a little bit 24 and Tin Tin. But it is also original," said Saif.

He also said he would never do a role on the lines of what Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did in spy-drama 'Mr & Mrs Smith'. "It just doesn't make sense for Kareena and I to do such a role in India. I think she has done a wonderful job with the action. She said she doesn't like doing action but she is very good at it," he told the newspaper. Agent Vinod, which is co-produced by Saif and Dinesh Vijan, is expected to release in 2,500 screens in India. — PTI

Big deal

Bagging a bargain in the shops gets people from Britain more excited than love at first sight, according to a scientific study. The experiment, carried out by neuropsychologists, found the people from UK responded with greatest excitement when shown discounted products.

Excitement levels hit their highest when participants in a study spotted a good bargain compared to an array of other stimulants and luxury goods. A number of results confounded expectations, such as women preferring 150 pounds off a washing machine to the Hollywood heart throb Ryan Gosling.

Watching football was found to produce an average heart rate 14 per cent lower than being shown a "buy one get one free" deal.

One female participant's heartbeat reached 187 beats a minute when looking at a deal to save 85p on shower gel, a higher reading than riding a roller coaster.

The consumer behavioural study was carried out by David Lewis, a leading neuropsychologist, to see how people respond to different price discounts and product offers.

In the experiment, sponsored by T-Mobile and carried out over three days, six men and six women were attached to chest monitors, skin conductors and eye-tracking equipment.

These recorded the physiological signs of excitement generated by the body.

Results showed that excitement levels hit their highest when participants spotted a good bargain.

Stimulants and luxury goods including the opposite sex, designer clothes, fashion accessories, expensive jewellery and sports cars had less effect.

"We've measured excitement in all kinds of various situations from the build-up to a big sports match to driving a fast car," said Lewis.

"Yet when it came to getting a good deal, those were some of the highest levels we have seen.

"Bagging a bargain was routinely shown to be more exciting than love at first sight - an experience that typically causes a peak in the physical symptoms of excitement shown in both men and women," he said.

Products marked half price or available on a 'bogof' deal generated the greatest level of excitement in men, quickening the pulse to nearly 90 beats a minute.

The prospect of a beer didn't come close, with heart rates barely rising above the average resting rate of 75 beats a minute.

For women, the offer of Christian Louboutin shoes, Mulberry handbags and even a holiday with the girls couldn't match the levels of excitement from getting a discount. — ANI

Madly in love?

A promising relationship is one in which people refrain from judging their new partners, and instead, tend to overrate them, even finding the positive aspect of a patently negative trait...

When you’re in love, you might hide it from your friends and family, but you can’t hide it from neuroscientists. With the help of brain scans, neuroscientists can now tell that you’re madly in love.

By charting brain activity with an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) machine, scientists can spot telltale regions of your brain glowing joyously when you look at a photograph of your beloved.

In addition, they can also tell as to whether you and your loved one will be happily married years from now, or bitterly separated by studying your brain activity alone.

Several years ago, Xiaomeng Xu, now a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University School of Medicine, and her colleagues performed fMRI scans on 18 Chinese men and women who reported being in the early stages of romantic love.

Though all the study participants showed clear signs of love — looking at the face of their beloved triggered a flurry of activity in the areas of their brains involved in reward and motivation — the researchers identified subtle differences between the individuals’ brain scans.

When the team followed up with the study participants 18 months later to learn how their budding relationships had turned out, they found a surprisingly strong correlation between certain characteristics in the original brain scans and the participants’ relationship status a year and a half later. The team detailed its results in the journal Human Brain Mapping in early 2010.

Now, another two years have passed, and the researchers have contacted 12 of the original study participants. Half of the participants are still in the relationships they had just begun at the time of the brain scans three and a half years ago; the other six aren’t.

Among the admittedly small sample, there is a striking divide between the original brain activity of the people whose relationships lasted and those whose relationships fell apart.

“Even with this small number of people, the results are really interesting,” said Lucy Brown, a leading expert on the neuroscience of love at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a member of the research team.

Two key aspects of the participants’ brain activity correlated with their relationship longevity, Brown said.

Among the people whose relationships became long-term, looking at a picture of their beloved “caused a decrease in activity in regions that we associate with making judgments, and also a decrease in activity in systems associated with a person’s sense of self,” she said.

“Sense of self” can be thought of awareness of one’s own existence, interests and desires.

These two brain responses, and the associated behavioural traits, suggest that a promising relationship is one in which people refrain from judging their new partners, and instead, tend to overrate them, even finding the positive aspect of a patently negative trait.

A promising new romance is also one in which people give great importance to their loved one’s interests and desires, even to the subjugation of their own. Both these tendencies seem to be “a huge help in the longevity of a relationship,” Brown told Life’s Little Mysteries.

The researchers plan to conduct a larger-scale study to see if the correlation between relationship longevity and the two MRI signatures — corresponding to the two behavioural traits — is as strong as their small data set implies.

They also intend to investigate whether certain people more easily exhibit the traits in question, and are thus inherently more suited to long-term attachments, than others. — ANI

stress buster
Keep your cool
Renee Singh

Harsh words and you go into your own shell, hurt and miserable. Criticism can be a major cause of stress. As Thomas Jefferson has said “Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.’’

If we go into the Oxford Dictionary meaning of stress it is ‘a state of affairs involving a demand on physical or mental energy’. We can simply say it is a condition that disturbs the normal psychological and physiological functioning of an individual. This is what happens when an individual is constantly criticised. It perturbs the mind and disturbs the body’s equilibrium. Just about everybody is constantly under the shadow of stress, men, women and children.

Sometimes we spend days of unhappy living all due to stress it affects all fields of our lives, be it school, work, a social gathering or even at home.

Knowing how to deal with an accusation of criticism may help you deal with a lot of stress and save you a lot of mental agony. We must learn to take charge of ourselves and not just learn to give into the demands of stress as this is our own inherent weakness of our negatively tuned in mind.

Many times we even react unnecessarily because of our own sensitive nature and go into unnecessary stress. Keeping a few tips handy would help us avoid a lot of this and help us deal with stress in a healthy way.

  • Do not feel offended when someone is criticising you. They may actually be trying to be helpful in showing you your mistakes and helping you resolve them.
  • Criticism could even be coming from a good intention. Give the person the benefit of the doubt.
  • Do not get upset by what seems like a personality attack. The person could sound vicious and hurtful but you could take the good out of it.
  • Do not take criticism personally. Look at it objectively and be cool about it.
  • Do not get into arguments. When someone criticises you, ask them the meaning of their negative attitude towards you. Understand the legitimacy of the persons anger or criticism.

As long as you can learn something positive from someone’s negative comments, you are the winner in the situation. Stress is sometimes necessary to occasionally clear cobwebs from our thinking. Certain personality disorders can also be attributed to being subjected to criticism.

Emotional abuse is also a part of a deeper level of criticism and is a factor held responsible for contributing to serious stress. Yelling, screaming, using derogatory remarks aggressive eye contact or even rumors can prove to be very harmful to the psyche.

Countering all this is essential to keep ourselves healthy and stress free

Some dos and don’ts

  • Never take important decisions under stress.
  • Stay away from people who criticise you constantly.
  • Learn to be part of a happy group of people.
  • Watch humorous movies or TV shows.
  • Listen to music you enjoy.
  • Spend a relaxed weekend with friend.
  • Make time with yourself for an inner connect.

Keep a positive outlook towards stress and it can help us evolve as a person by letting go of unwanted thoughts in our lives. It reminds us of the transitory nature of our experiences and also pushes us to look for true happiness in life.

The wedding planner
Gorgeous Sri Lankan native Jacqueline Fernandez loves weddings. She talks about traditional Christian weddings and her ideal man.

Mr Right

The qualities I want in my man are honesty, intelligence, respectfulness, focus and reliability. I should be very sure that I could depend on him for an entire lifetime. I am a very traditional and conservative girl. I am not getting married anytime soon though. It was fun playing a girl who is going to get married in Housefull 2.

On Church weddings

I would love to get married in a church and will definitely do so. I want to get married in the same church that my parents got married in. In fact, my sister had a lovely church wedding. I want only my family and close friends present there. I loved attending Genelia and Riteish’s wedding ceremonies and they were a lot of fun! I love the white dress because it is so pure and angelic. I want to have a super time at my wedding with my loved ones.

Bridal stresses

People go crazy about their clothes on wedding days. The bride is stressing out because the dress has to fit well and the guests want to outdo each other. My brother made a smart white suit for my sister’s wedding but when the ceremony began, he managed to spill ink over it. He had to give her away and my sister got very angry but it was a funny incident in retrospect. My sister looked heavenly on her wedding day.

Imran Khan is a happy man!

On a high: Imran Khan Imran Khan is happy with his trilogy of hits: Delhi Belly, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. He talks about acting and enjoying success.

Hits and hits

It feels great to have hit films. I go with my instincts and I see how hard-working and enthusiastic my directors are. I have worked mostly with new directors. MBKD is my biggest hit till date. It is not fair to recall my earlier failures and say that I have done well only in romantic comedies. Acting just happened to me and I am happy with my career.

Being real

I know that thirty years down the line, my phone will stop ringing and I won’t be given films. There will be a twenty-year-old boy who will be touted as the hottest actor at that time. So I have built a life for myself. I have friends and family I deeply care about. There is more than work in my life. I know actors who are work oriented and do not enjoy their success. I have had a good couple of years so I rewarded myself with a Ferrari car. I have a lovely home as well and only the interiors need to be done so I can move in soon.

Dear wifey

You can’t hide your relationships from the media and from people close to you. I am very happy being married because it is something I have done for my personal happiness and I have done it out of choice.

Promotions do not guarantee success: Irrfan

Straight talk: Irrfan Khan Actor Irrfan Khan, who is looking forward to his forthcoming film Paan Singh Tomar, says that though promotions have become a "weapon" to endorse films, they can not guarantee a good box office performance.

Paan Singh Tomar is based on the real life of a sportsman-turned-dacoit from Chambal. Tomar, a national steeplechase champion for seven straight years, quit the sport and the army to become a Bandit King of the Chambal Valley. "Those who have money, promote it in a big way. But audiences are smart enough today... if they are attracted by the promos then only they go and watch it irrespective of how much ever promotions one does," Irrfan said.

"Promotions at times help and at times they do not... it is a weapon but there is no guarantee. Ultimately it is the film that does wonders." Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Paan Singh Tomar will release on March 2, and features Mahie Gill along with Irfan. The actor, who has given hits like Haasil, The Namesake and Life in a... Metro, is planning to show the film to real-life dacoits. "We intend to show the film to the dacoits of Chambal, (and also) those who have earned medals, made name for themselves in sports," he said. — PTI

THE YEAR AHEAD
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is February 20...

This year, your birthday falls on Maha Shivratri. If religious, it will be auspicious to start your good morning by visiting Shiv Temple.

Nearing full circle, the zodiac’s wheel arrives at Pisces, the Fish. Those born under this sign inhabit the twelfth house, the reunion with ego and infinite, the eternal. Pisces is said to be the most sensitive of signs—and the most vulnerable. Pisceans swim in the medium of dreams. You are sensitive and instinctual. You become completely absorbed in a chosen path to the exclusion of everything else. You are versatile and tend to understand things by absorption rather than logic. You are loyal, home-loving, kind and generous. You can be easily misled because you want to believe. Your dreamy and impractical natures are a source of distress to your near and dear ones. Being a mixture of an optimist and a pessimist, you may find it difficult to make up your minds on any issue.

Your latest idea isn’t quite ready for prime time. Starting in March, thinking may need a radical shift — or a surprisingly slight but ultimately significant one. You’ll be able to make great changes at work. Don’t be too instinctive and try to complete various tasks.

The difficulties that will result will be temporary. The new dawn will bring new freedom. Finally, things will start to fall into their proper place. Don’t be so sentimental!  Things that you helped set into action will soon lead to the loss of something that is very familiar. However, you should avoid getting involved in unnecessary controversies and exercise control over your language. You should proceed smoothly and those desirous of working in another place might be able to do so. Your sustained efforts would achieve good results.

Friends are most helpful. Returns on favors come in fast. Your health might experience ups and downs. Hence, you are required to observe necessary precautions as and when required. A touch of glamour enters your life, making you feel set apart, a travelling light among the masses. It’s a great year for giving performances, the edgiest and most spontaneous version of you, as a gift to your social circle.

Annu KapoorMood: Determined. Compatible signs: Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus. Lucky colours: Spring Green, Purple. Lucky days: Friday. Lucky numbers: 8, 16, 32, 64, 88. Lucky gem: Onyx. Lucky flower: Chameli. Suggestion on Birthday: Donate religious books in a religious place.

Antakshari fame Annu Kapoor (February 20, 1956, Indore) changed the spelling of his last name from Kapoor to Kapur made his debut in the film Kaala Patthar in 1979. His career has spanned nearly 34 years, including a distinctive presence in Bollywood, television, and reality game shows. Recently, he was seen in Gali Gali Chor Hai as Hawaldar. Annu will be better in comedy instead as per his stars.
