Delivered in ambulance, baby dies

Ambala, February 19
A newly born baby died after its delivery in the ambulance near the main gate of Ambala City, Civil Hospital. Rani, who had delivered the baby, is the resident of Ajrani village in Kurukshetra.

Pala Ram, Rani’s husband, said that he had admitted his wife at maternity ward, Civil Hospital, Kurukshetra, today morning after she had complained of pain. Later in the noon, the doctor, who was attending her, referred her to Civil Hospital, Ambala City. When she was reaching just close to Civil Hospital, Ambala City, in the ambulance, she delivered a baby boy.

Pala Ram alleged that the doctor of the Civil Hospital, Kurukshetra, did not attend to his wife properly and without proper examination she was referred to Ambala City hospital. He said that his son would have survived if his wife was not referred to the Ambala City.

He said that similar facilities were available in Kurukshetra and Ambala City civil hospitals and there was no reason to refer his wife to Ambala. The staff nurse on duty at Ambala civil hospital brought the newly born baby and the mother to maternity ward where the doctor declared the baby brought dead. Rani was admitted to the civil hospital.

2-year-old killed in mishap

Lalru, February 19
A two-year-old child was killed and three women were injured in a road accident near Handesra village on Monday. The deceased child was identified as Kallo, hailing from Bihar, and the injured women, who were the relatives of victim, were admitted to a private hospital of Ambala city.

Sources said the accident occurred when a three-wheeler taking all victims from Ambala was going to Sehjadpur when it collided with a tractor near Khelan village. The victims were going for work at a brick kiln near Sehjadpur.

The police has registered a case against the driver of the three wheeler who had fled from the spot.

In another accident, four persons were injured when a truck hit a ca coming from Ambala side on the Ambala-Chandigarh national highway near Jharmari village, here today. The injured were admitted to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Pollution board issues warning

The residents of Kherigujran village protested against the polluted water being discharged by the nearby chemical units in the seasonal choe that flows near the village. They alleged that they had raised the issue many times but the pollution board and the administration did not care. The angry villagers alleged in a written complaint that Indo-swift company, situated near here, was discharging its waste continually in the nearby choe polluting it and ground water. As a result, the animals were becoming ill after drinking the polluted water.

Meanwhile, Xen of the pollution control board said that board officials had already taken samples from the choe that were found failed and the company was directed to adopt to pollution control norms properly. If the company officials did not adhere to the pollution control norms then a strict action would be taken against them, he added.

Declamation contest

A declamation contest in English was organised in the college campus of Longowal polytechnic Dera Bassi on Saturday.

The students had different topics like “Female Foeticide, Influence of Western Culture, Role of Parents, Role of Education in life, Computer Generation, Democracy, Corruption”.

Kusum got the first prize. The Vice-Chairman handed over the certificates to all the participants.

5 minors held for selling library books to scrap dealer

Books are known to be a person’s best friend, and five minor school children have made the optimum use of their “best friend” by selling these to a scrap dealer for purchasing their share of chocolates, cold drinks and other confectionery items.

The Chandigarh Police arrested the minors from Government Model High School, Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, involved in the theft. The accused were let off on bail for selling the stolen books to the scrap dealer in Mauli Jagran.

Interestingly, all accused were selling books to treat themselves with chocolates, cold drinks and other confectionary items, after their school. The accused were found to be engaged in the activity of stealing school books from the library over the span of past four days.

Acting on a complaint made by the principal of Government Model High School, Vikas Nagar (Mauli Jagran), the police nabbed all the five minors for committing the crime last afternoon.

“The head of the institution informed us about library books going missing for the past few days. On checking, students went to the library yesterday, where we arrested these five minors. The minors used to sell the books to Subhash, a scrap dealer who was also arrested,” said Ranjeet Singh, investigation officer.

The police has recovered a total of 79 books from the scrap dealer, but the accused had stolen about 150 books from the school premises. The remaining books had been sold earlier. They used to spend the money to have eateries from a local confectionery shop. The accused are aged between 13 and 14,” said the officer.

All five were arrested and later bailed out as they were minors. A case under Sections 380, 411 of the IPC has been registered in the Manimajra Police Station and the police is investigating the matter.

Woman attempts suicide

A woman residing in Sector 34 here poured kerosene on her body and tried to commit suicide on February 16.

She was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. A case under Section 309 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-34 police station.

Held for consuming liquor publicly

The police arrested Devika Nandan of Mani Majra and Deepak Sharma of Panchkula from Sector 8 on Saturday for consuming liquor at a public place.

A case under Sections 68, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act was registered at the Sector-3 police station. The accused were later released on bail.

Paper trees cut

Three paper trees planted near the swimming pool at the PGI were cut on the night of February 17. A case was registered under Section 14 of the Punjab Capital Development and Regulation Tree Act, 1952, at the Sector-11 police station.

Held for gambling

Ravi Dutt of Sector 26 was arrested for playing ‘satta’ yesterday. An amount of Rs 5,280 was recovered from his possession.

A case under Sections 13-A, 3 and 67 of the Gambling Act was registered at the Sector-26 police station. The accused was later released on bail.

The police arrested Shareen of Burail while he was playing ‘satta’ yesterday. An amount of Rs 1,120 was recovered from his possession.

Theft cases

Rajpal of Mani Majra reported that Kali Parshad, alias Ramu, of the same area stole a laptop, a mobile phone, a credit card, a debit card, a registration card, a driving licence and Rs 26,000 from his residence yesterday.

The accused was later arrested. He was booked under Sections 380 and 411 of the IPC at the Mani Majra police station.

Samir Panwar of Shimla reported that someone stole his car (HP63B-1130) from the Khukhrain Bhavan at Sector 35 here on February 17. A case under Section 379 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-36 police station.

BS Sohal, a resident of Sector 40, reported that someone stole two LPG cylinders from his residence on the night of February 17. A case under Section 380 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-39 police station.

Dharminder Singh of Sector 41 reported that someone stole his motorcycle (PB05N-4291) from his house on the night of February 15. A case under Section 379 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-39 police station.

Daljit Rani of the PGI campus, Sector 12, reported that someone stole a wheel of his car from his residence at Sector 21 past night. A case under Section 379 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-19 police station.

Mahesh Kumar of Sector 28 reported that Monu of Phase I, Industrial Area, was caught red-handed while stealing an iron bench from a park at Sector 29 today.

The accused was later arrested. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC was registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Accident cases

Sonali of Sector 20 reported that a car (CH03V-2828) had hit her scooter (CH04E-2393) at Sector 27 and the driver sped away from the spot.

She was injured and admitted to the PGI. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-26 police station.

A truck (PB08BV-9081) hit an unidentified pedestrian yesterday. The pedestrian was later referred to the PGI.

Ramesh Kumar of Ram Darbar reported that a tractor (CH01Z-1491) hit his motorcycle (CH03Z-9633) in the same area yesterday.

Bhagwan Lal of Mani Majra reported that a car (CH01AK-6969) hit his motorcycle (CH04H-6345) near the traffic lights on the road separating Sectors 46 and 48 on February 15.

Ashish Sharma was driving his car when the accident took place. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-34 police station.

Man robbed at gunpoint

Zirakpur, February 19
Three unidentified people robbed a vegetable contractor of his Indica car, Rs 6300 and gold jewellery on gun point.

The police said the incident occurred when the contractor, who was identified as Raj Kumar, was going towards Panchkula from Zirakpur. While he reached near a hotel, three unknown persons stopped him and asked for lift. When the accused entered inside the car and they pointed out the gun at his head and asked him to handover all valuables. After handing over the things, the accused allegedly ran away with his car.

The DSP Dera Bassi Anil Kumar said that the police had registered the case and started investigation on the complaint of Raj Kumar, a resident of Dhakoli.

Dacoity foiled, 6 held

The Chandigarh Police foiled a dacoity with the arrest of six persons from the Zerri mandi, near Maloya, here today.

Acting on a tipoff, the police arrested Davinder Singh, alias Buta, of Dhanas, Gagandeep and Noorhasan of Yamunanagar, Sanjeev Kumar of Sahranpur, Ashok Kumar of Karnal and Harkaran Singh of Hoshiarpur from the greenbelt in the area on the rear side of the mandi.

The police recovered two countrymade pistols, a knife, a slugger and an iron rod from their possession. A car (CH04A-3763) was also recovered. A case under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered.

3 Indians qualify for Main Draw

Unseeded Kevin Jordi (Switzerland) created the first upset in the singles qualifiers when he defeated top seed Kenny Bun (Cambodia) in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(6) at Tennis Stadium, Sector-10. Having won the first set easily, Kevin Jordi was made to sweat hard by Bun Kenny in the second set which went in Kevin’s favour at 7-6 (6).

Second Seed Akash Wagh (Ind) got past his compatriot rival Ronak Manuja in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-3. The third seed Shien Yin Peng (Taiwan) beat Vivek Shokeen (Ind) 6-2, 6-4, but Vivek Shokeen still made to the main draw as a lucky loser in place of the main draw entrant Vijayant Malik (Ind), the second seed, who failed to report.

Dineshkanthan Thangarajah (Sri Lanka), the wild card entrant, got the better of fourth seed Biles Bugby (Great Britain) 7-6(4), 6-2. Miles Bugby and Thangarajah were involved in long rallies in the first set before Thangarajah was able to hold sway over his opponent in a tie breaker 7-6(4). Chandril Sood (Ind), the fifth seed, was made to bite the dust by his compatriot, the twelfth seed Arun Prakash Rajagopalan (Ind) 6-3, 6-2.

Jordi Munoz Abreu (Spain) crushed sixth seed Danilar Duldaev (KGZ) in straight sets to secure a berth in the main draw.

The clash between Vijay Kannan (Ind), seeded eleven, and Kunal Anand (Ind), seeded seven, was a keenly contested affair, with Vijay Kannan winning the battle in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. The last match of the day between Matthiew Vierin (Italy), eighth seed, and Motoaki Kita (Japan), fourteenth seed, was well contested. Motoaki Kita set up a blistering pace as he wrapped up the first game 3-6. Vierin Matthiew then steadied himself and won the second game 6-4. The third set was an anticlimax with Motoaki Kita going down tamely 6-2.

With the completion of the singles qualifiers, three Indians, and player each from Switzerland Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Spain and Italy have made it to the main draw, along with Vivek Shokeen of India made it on account of the withdrawal of second seed Vijayant Malik (Ind).

The four wild card entrants in the main draw are Ranjeet Singh, Sidharth Rawat, and Abhijeet Tiwari from India and J Santos Los from Malaysia. A total of 32 players have entered in the main draw.

There are 16 doubles pairs, including 9 from India, in the doubles main draw. Han Hsin Lee and Yin Hsien Peng from Taiwan is the top seeded pair in the doubles main draw, followed by Sam Barry (Ireland) and Miles Bugby from Great Britain (seeded second), and Arata Onozawa and Kento Takeuchi of Japan (seeded third).

Three Indian pairs, Lakshit Sood and Chandril Sood, Dheeranush Singh Bhatti and Digvijay Singh Naruka, and Vijay Kannan and Arun Prakash Rajagopal have been given wild card entries in the doubles main draw.

Saroj bags first prize in 100m race

Saroj bagged first the prize in 100m race in the annual athletics meet held at the Aryans Group of Colleges (AGC) at the college campus, Thuha village, near here today. Around 500 students participated in the meet.

In the outdoor category, students took part in 100m and 200m races, volley ball, high jump, long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, football, and kabbadi. Students also took part in various indoor games like table tennis, badminton, carom, chess, and gymnastics. Fun games like potato race, sack race, noodle-eating, three-legged race, tug of war, etc had everyone in splits.

Dr Anshu Kataria, chairman of the group, gave away the prizes to the
winners.

Annual sports day organised

Children from pre-nursery to class V took part in various races, fun games, and inter-class group games at the annual sports day at Sharda Sarvhitkari Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 40-D, here today.

Chanchal Singh, Deputy Director Education, Chandigarh, was the chief guest.

A well turned out march past followed the hoisting of the flag. The tiny tots of pre-nursery won everyone’s heart in the goggles race. Matki race, hanuman race, skipping, balloon bursting and relay, also received roaring applause.

Medals and certificates were given to the winners by the chief guest who said that young, impressionable children learn values like discipline, confidence, and responsibility through sports.
