University releases placement brochure
Patiala, February 7 The brochure contained details of the university and the progress that it had made in the past few years. Officials said over 50 law offices and advocates had invited resumes of students for recruitment and a few others had granted them internships. The university also inaugurated its daycare centre on the university premises. Jaswal said the facility had been established with a grant of Rs 4.5 lakh from the UGC. |

Tension over temple
Ambala, February 7 A few residents of the village had been opposing the construction of the temple at the site. They were of the view that it would create disturb students. Krishan Lal, president of Sant Ravi Das Committee, said the district administration had permitted them to construct the temple on the site. He said the gram panchayat had passed a resolution in its favour and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Ram Kishan Gujjar had granted Rs 1 lakh for the construction. Two days back, after construction material was brought to the site, a few villagers opposed it. DCP (Rural) PK Mehta and SDM Mukesh Ahuja reached the spot and stopped the construction. Members of the committee today fixed a flagpole at the site, which irritated others. The police was deployed at the site. |

Chemist shop raided
Ambala, February 7 Senior drug controller Lalit Goel and drug controller Gurcharan Singh had received information that the chemist had kept medicines without proper bills. They came and on not finding proper bills, impounded medicines.

Two thieves held, 7 bikes recovered
Chandigarh, February 7 The police stopped a motorcycle (number CH 03-U-6622) near Sector 38 (West) when they noticed a different registration number on the front and the rear number plates. Both the persons, who were riding the motorcycle, were handed over to local police for verification of their antecedents. The motorcycle was found to be stolen from the parking situated in front of SCO 310 Sector 38-D. The police arrested Deepak, alias Kala, and Arun, alias Poongi, in a case registered at the Sector 39 police station. During the investigation, suspects Deepak and Arun, both residents of Daddu Majra Colony, confessed that they had stolen eight motorcycles from different sectors, including Sector-38, 39, 40, 38 (West) and Dadu

Gurdwara manager booked for rape bid
Panchkula, February 7 The police booked gurdwara manager Bhupinder Singh and three others, working as ‘sewadars’ and clerk at the gurdwara, under Sections 376, 511 and 323 of the IPC. The police registered the FIR on the complaint of Bahadur Singh, ‘sewadar’ at the gurdwara, and his wife. Bahadur told the police that Bhupinder called him to his office on Sunday. Bahadur added that he and his wife went to the manager’s office, where he was beaten up by the manager and three or four others due to old rivalry. They also tried to outrage the modesty of his wife, Bahadur told the police. Chandi Mandir police station SHO Surinder Kumar said they registered an FIR after recording the statements of the couple. When contacted, Bhupinder said Bahadur and his wife had levelled the allegations to put pressure on him as he was conducting the investigation into a scuffle between Bahadur and another ‘sewadar’. |

Youth killed in accident
Zirakpur, February 7 An official with the GRP said Rehman was crossing the track around 6:10 pm when was hit by the train, which was on way from Chandigarh to Ambala. He died on the spot, the official added. The body was been kept for post-mortem examination at the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital. Inquest proceedings were initiated. Rs 76,000 stolen
Mohali: Burglars broke into a shop at the Phase-VII market here and decamped with Rs 76,000 past night. The owner of Punjab Finance Company, KS Pannu, reported to the police that an unidentified youth sneaked in and broke the cash box. The act was captured on a CCTV. KXIP Green lift trophy
Mohali, February 7 Chetan Sharma joined by Abhimanyu Rana played sensibly and rotated the strike well and stitched a partnership of 93 runs off 60 balls. Rana scored 41 runs off 32 balls. Chetan Sharma (52) completed his third half-century of the tournament with a classic off drive to fence. Soon after completing his 50, he was caught in deep by Malhotra off Wilkin Mota. Captain R Satish of Red team scored a brisk 31 runs off 21 balls enabling his team to pile up a handsome total of 163 runs in allotted 20 overs. For Green team, Wilikn Mota was the pick of the bowlers, as he scalped three wickets for 26 runs. In reply, KXIP Green lost the centurion of last league match Ishan Malhotra cheaply as he was caught by Mehta in the third over bowled by Jatinder on his individual score of 11. Red team put some more pressure on Green team by taking two more quick wickets. Chitnis and Karan Goel then steadied the ship with a match winning partnership of 105 runs. Chitnis was more fluent with his strokes, as he scored 71 runs off 41 balls. His innings was studded with three huge sixes and four boundaries. Karan Goel remained unbeaten at his individual score of 43 runs off 39 balls with the help of four hits to fence, as they achieved the target at the loss of four wickets with 13 balls to spare. Kuldeep Diwan was elected as the best bowler, Ishan Malhotra as the best batsman, Javed and Dhruv Mahajan for best catch and Prashant Chopra as man of the series. Chandigarh, February 7 In the quarterfinal match, St Stephen’s academy beat Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy by 30 runs. St Stephen’s academy won the toss and elected to bat first. They piled up a huge total of 227 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their stipulated 35 overs. Abhilash 86 runs, Akash Rana 70 runs and Sukhraj 31 runs were the main scorers. For Vivek academy, Anhad was the pick of the bowlers, as he scalped three wickets giving away 31 runs, while Karan and Arjun Singla took two wickets each giving away 22 and 36 runs, respectively.
