Bigger & better
The year 2012 will see as many as 17 new Punjabi films being made on diverse subjects
Jasmine Singh

It's happening. And we can see it right here-in the crisp scripts, on the fresh faces, in the new notes of music, on the different locations…Punjabi movie industry is moving, or rather charging ahead.

After a few successful stints like Mel Kara De Rabba, Jiney Mera Dil Luteya last year, the industry is geared to provide more and better entertainment in the year 2012. It's just getting bigger and better, as director Navaniat Singh puts it across, supporting it with supporting data, "This year 17 or 18 Punjabi movies are being made. While some will release this year, others will entertain us next year."

Seventeen or eighteen films, would someone from Bollywood mind taking a look at it? Indeed with the 'fresh' outlook, this industry is all set to give the audiences a wholesome entertainment and capture many more outside Punjab. So, here is what the Punjabi movie scene will be in 2012.

Jimmy Shergill as an actor has created a place for himself in this industry, and so has his banner Jimmy Shergill Productions. This year too his production house is all set to dish out some entertaining and young looking movies. Says director of Mel Kara De Rabba, Navaniat Singh, who will be releasing Taur Mittran Di coming May under Jimmy Shergill Productions, "This year we can look forward to youth-oriented movies.” Taur Mittran Di stars Amrinder Gill and MTV's Roadies fame Rannvijay.

All this talk on fresh and youth-based movies leaves us with the though about the missing Jatt and Punajb from the scene. Jatt da Badla, Jatt di Yaari, Jatt Jina maud…but one look at some of the releases for this year, we are glad. There is Jatt and Juliet starring Diljit Dosanjh, Neeru Bajwa, Munde Patiala De, Gabru Des Punjab De, so not all is lost.

Laughs comedian actor Gurpreet Ghuggi, who is shooting for Manmohan Singh's upcoming comedy venture Aaj De Ranjhey. "This movie tries to give a social message through comedy," he says. Gurpreet looks forward to Pata Nahi Rab Kehdeyan Rang Vich Raazi release starring Tarun Khanna and Neeru Bajwa.

The year of 'new' Punjabi movies will also have many new faces as established singers Preet Harpal, Honey Singh, Jasbir Jassi, Labh Janjua will face the camera. Many television actors Tarun Khanna, Rohit Khurana, Gurmeet Chaudhary will also make an appearance. Gippy Grewal, is all set to create waves with his movie Mirza Jatt directed by Baljit Singh Deo. Not only singers, some Bollywood actors will also be seen sharing screen space with Punjabi actors. Shakti Kapoor will act in the movie Rahe Chadi Kala Punjab Di slated for a March release. Bogg Boss fame Claudia Ciesla also tries her luck in Punjab with her debut movie Yaar Pardesi directed by Gurbir Singh Grewal.

Says actor Gulzar Chahal, who will be seen in Dil Tainu Pyar Karda, directed by Ajay Kumar Pannalal, "Punjabi cinema is moving at a good speed, and this year we will see a good mix of romance, comedy and action."

Vanessa’s mad obsession
Venessa Hudgens expresses her need for love through body art

High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens says she has a "mad obsession" with drawing on herself.

The 23-year-old, who was recently pictured with a tattoo on her foot reading, All you need is love, said the inking was actually fake and a result of her love of drawing on her own body.

"It's fake. I have this mad obsession with drawing on myself, like, I cannot help it! I draw all over my hands, all over my arms, obviously my foot. It's just fun. It's hard to commit to a tattoo, like, I have a few, so, when you write on yourself it's not that much of a commitment," Hudgens said.

The actress, who had a butterfly etched on her neck last year, said she made the decision to have it inscribed on her body because she was named after the creature.

"It was very last minute, but I've actually wanted it for years. A butterfly landed on my mom's stomach a week before I was born and that's how I got my name, because Vanessa means butterfly - it's a Latin derivative," Hudgens said. — PTI

Rock on…
City-based rock band Harmonic Friction is back from making inroads into Channel [V] Launchpad
Mona

This gang of four is living a rocking life literally…Harmonic Friction, Chandigarh-based Alternative Rock band is going places. Just back after participating in Channel [v] Launchpad in Goa, this band is basking in the adulation and glory it received.

"We ended up third in this prestigious competition, quite an achievement for our four-year-old band," says Sharang Sharma, vocalist, rhythm guitarist and the band manager. The band played their single Why I'm Here and a reggae version of Iron Maiden's legendary song, Hallowed Be Thy Name at the contest.

In this young band, Sharang and Atul Gupta (drums) are graduates, Abhijeet Swarnkar (bass guitar) is pursuing engineering while Hitkarsh Chanana (lead guitarist and vocalist) is a class X student. They meet alternate days apart from gigs to make music. Does it get difficult to manage studies and music both? "Not really. We all are together for the love of music and fortunately our families are very supportive," answers Sharang.

The band that plays around in schools and colleges goes around the country doing gigs. "Sadly, our city and Punjab are not too supportive to music or art in general. Performing in Bangalore and other metros helps us keep pace with the happening world of music," he adds.

Their first single Disappear was hugely appreciated. "In fact, it's appreciation from the audience that keeps us going. Audiences elsewhere really respect and adulate musicians. We had an amazing time at Shillong where we played last year," says Sharang.

This enthusiastic bunch is working passionately on their first album that they intend to release in May and a pan-India promotional tour. What makes them a hit in such a short span? "We make music that we believe in," says Sharang. Well, rock on guys…

TREND SETTER
Simply the best

Being fashionable and in style was somehow always the prerogative of women while men dressed up in a subtle manner. Now the tables have turned and our young boys too are looking towards latest styles and designer wear, hence giving due importance to their ‘look’! A dashing young MBA student Harmanjit Singh Grewal likes to give attention to detail.

Your sense of style

A stylish individual must look comfortable. Colours should be combined well without going over board with matching. Style for me also means well groomed hair. Whatever one wears must be worthy of every penny in the style quotient.

Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

My Nike sports shoes in red and black colour.

Brand crazy or street pick-ups?

Depends on the occasion, for formals it has to be branded.

Your style icon would be...

Hritik Roshan for his well-groomed looks. He looks good in casuals

Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity?

I think Vidya Balan does need a make over.

Which look would your prefer—sporty, chic or glamorous

Glam all the way!

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…..

Punkish trends like piercing the tongue or multi coloured hair!

Your take on accessories?

They are very important. I like to wear belt, carry a nice wallet and sport a bracelet or a chain.

What gives you a high on the confidence level…

When my mirror assures me that I am looking good.

The ongoing Kashmiri food festival at Kebab Khan at P3, Panchkula, is set to delight the foodie in you
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

There is something about food that drives people miles in search of one particular flavour! Wazwan, the delicacy from Kashmir, is one such dish. A formal meal or what can be termed as a ritual wazwan entails a ceremony that requires hours of cooking and planning. And serving the best of Kashmiri delicacies with aromatic herbs and fresh produce of the region is Kebab Khan at P3, Panchkula, at their Kashmiri food festival.

Supervised by two chefs from Kashmir, the dishes are not only authentic but the ingredients have been picked from the region itself. The reason is simple - they didn’t want to tamper with the real taste! Well, after tasting the meal we can assure the food is par excellence and the taste pretty authentic. Each dish in the menu is rich and one-of-a-kind, as the choice of menu goes beyond the usual tabakmaaz, roganjosh, rista and kebabs. It also includes a number of vegetarian dishes that come as a pleasant surprise, as Kashmiri cuisine is generally about meat! So, going beyond meat, for the starters you can try buzith chaman, (cubes of paneer marinated in curd, cream and aniseed, grilled in a tandoor) or nadroo churma (crispy fried lotus stem tossed with dry spices). The first bite wouldn’t go well with the palate but as you chew this delicacy you are sure to get the taste. The process of cooking a lotus stem is not easy, especially when you are creating a starter out of it! While there is no dearth of meat, here you can try the all-time favourite maaz (Kashmiri seekh kebab of marinated mince barbequed meat in a tandoor), kanti kebab (mutton flavored with Kashmiri spices and pan tossed), buzith kokur (boneless chicken marinated in curd, cream and aniseed, grilled in a tandoor) or talith gaad (shallow fried marinated fish slices).

For the main course, one could start with a vegetarian delicacy peculiar to Kashmir, haaq. This is a stewed preparation of exotic Kashmiri spinach called haaq and is somewhat similar in looks to our Punjabi saag, but the taste is absolutely different. Another must-have is munj gad, a popular dish consisting of large cut turnips in delicately flavoured fish curry. Bhaderwahi rajmah, choek wangan, which means sour aubergines, cooked in a tangy spicy curry, gobhi roganjosh, nadroo yakhani (lotus stem simmered in a yoghurt base gravy) are some delicacies one can savour. For the non-vegetarians, there is the yummy Rista, Gushtaba, Marchwangan Korma, Mutton Yakh. For desserts you can have the Kashmiri phirni or the aromatic hot Kashmiri kesar kahwa.

It’s not just about number

Binge drinking should not just be defined based on the total number of drinks but the circumstances of consumption (rate of consumption, with or without food, etc.) should also constitute part of the definition, say researchers.

Most studies have found that binge drinking is associated with a loss of alcohol’s protective effect against ischemic heart disease (IHD). But a new study has found that “binge drinking” (more that 5 drinks on an occasion) did not show differences in risk of ischemic heart disease (coronary disease) or total mortality among moderate drinkers. —ANI

When east meets west
Canadian author Kathyrn Myra Spencer's debut novel Paldi is a story that blends two different cultures
Ashima Batish

Is there any similarity between Ella and Prabhjot? How can there be? Ella is a citizen of Canada and Prabhjot lives in the other corner of the world—Punjab. Another difference is that Ella gets fascinated by India and its culture, while Prabhjot loves Western music and longs to go to Canada. Yet the lives of both protagonists get entwined at two points, first when Prabhjot flies to Canada and next when Ella comes to India. The only factor that connects them is their native village in their respective countries, Paldi the village, which also forms the premise of the novel Paldi by Kathyrn Myra Spencer.

"The protagonists, Ella and Prabhjot, become friends in Canada and the story moves forward from there," shares Kathyrn, who read passages from her novel to students of Dikshant International School.

It wasn't very difficult for her to write an inter-cultural story, given the fact that she has visited India 35 times. In all this while, more than festivals, culture, weddings in India, what mesmerised her is the spirituality. "I have come here as part of International Meditation Centre. Meditation is not practiced around the world, but in India; the experience is very different, it's real and the ambience inspires further."

The Indian influence on her book also becomes apparent when the story delves into reincarnation. "When Ella comes to India, people of the Paldi village instantly recognise her. She bears a striking resemblance with someone who passed away long time back." Also the presence of a huge Punjabi population in Canada has an affect on her book. "I deliberately stayed in those areas of Canada where Punjabis outnumbered the Canadian residents. It helped me understand their lifestyle and culture better."

Her character Prabhjot, also in a way, represents those Punjabi girls who are eager to shift to Canada. "I got in touch with a lot of Indian girls who were desperate to settle in Canada. I got to know what fascinates them about Canada and why it is so easy for them to leave their native place, parents, friends and their comfort zone." She hopes that her book will make for a different genre of literature, which she terms as intercultural. "It's a difficult genre to attempt, you need to understand the cultures well and then to intersperse them with a line of story is even more challenging." No wonder, it took her years to finish her debut attempt!

Born to Act
From an introvert scooter mechanic to an actor, Daksh Ajit Singh's story is an inspiring one
Sabia Talwar

Daksh Ajit Singh, who belongs to Ludhiana, has had a long period of struggle in life and but then who can complain if the end result is worth the hardship?

"I never wanted to become an actor. I was a very shy and introvert," says Daksh. But then, Daksh gained enough experience in life that equipped him to face reality.

"Back in Ludhiana, I worked as a scooter mechanic, a stenographer, an embroidery craftsman, a salesman with a cassette recording shop and a graphic designer as well." He did his part-time BA from the Government College of Ludhiana.

Coming from a middle-class family, Daksh learnt the importance of standing on his own feet at a young age. Initially winning titles in body building and sports were leading him nowhere.

"I never wanted to do a job so I kept myself busy in modelling contests and Punjabi videos; I never knew that I will gain enough confidence to go to Mumbai." Daksh altthough being a gadget lover sold off his Sony Ericsson handset to arrange for the ticket to Mumbai.

Now, Daksh knows that he has to focus on just one thing-acting. He has done serials like Chalti Ka Naam Gaddi for Zee TV, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat for Star Plus and Jamuniya for NDTV. He was also nominated for best actor in negative role. He also acted in Star Plus' Maryaada Lekin Kab Tak for one and a-half-year.

"I even wrote the songs for Maryaada," he says. Daksh is a lyricist, painter and a singer as well. "I am coming out with my album where I will bring forward my compositions."

Daksh is an avid painter and wants to exhibit his work this year. "I want to write a book, believe me I can't sit idle at all. I need to do something or the other." Besides painting, photography is yet another passion of his.

He has even acted in Punjabi movies like Tere Ishq Nachaya opposite Mannat Singh, his fiancée who has helped him reach such heights. Rahe Chardi Kala Punjab Di is another movie of his which will release by March end this year.

"I never plan anything in life and I never stick to one thing. My simple introduction is that I'm a human and this is my only identity."

Daksh has never taken any training for acting or singing and says that all is God gifted and he has learnt everything with experience. All this is just not enough he also had offers from Bollywood but for cameo roles so he is waiting for the right time.

"I feel a person should keep on adding things to his life and I'm happy with whatever I'm doing, at least I know I'm not dependent only on my acting skills."

The talented guy wants to give something to the society through his art.

"Each and every work needs the same amount of dedication and there are a lot many ups and downs in life. But you have to face it bravely," he signs off.

Imran behind the camera

Imran Khan besides being a good actor is also a fine photographer. He clicked some pictures of Kareena Kapoor during the shoot of Ek Main Aur Ek Tu that were shown in Mumbai recently.

"Some of the photos were taken on an iPhone while some of them were taken in SLR cameras. Our on-set photographer Amin Ahuja was helping me out on all of this because I am not a professional photographer. So I can't take all the credit. It was because of his help," Imran said.

Kareena was completely flattered looking at her pictures and said this was the first time any co-star has clicked her photographs.

"I think it's the first time ever one of my co-stars has clicked beautiful pictures of me. So, thank you Imran," she said. With her co-star's passion for photography, Kareena also wants to try her hands on the same.— IANS

Pippa makes her move!

Following in sister Kate's footsteps, Pippa Middleton is reportedly in a serious relationship with a mega-rich Earl. The man in question is her old flame George Percy, heir to the Duke of Northumberland.

It is one of Britain's richest and grandest dukedoms, with a vast estate that includes Alnwick Castle, movie setting for Harry Potter's school-Hogwarts. Percy, 27, called Prince of the North by friends, will one day inherit a lot, including 315 million pounds.

Pippa has been close friends with George for several years now. They met at Edinburgh University and had a fling in 2008. Last year, they insisted that they were "just friends" after he was seen helping her get over her break-up with banker Alex Louden. But it bloomed into love at a New Year's Eve party hosted by the Middleton family. — ANI

Just a rumour

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is the latest hoax victim. Last week, the social-networking Twitter was abuzz with the false news of her death. As soon as the rumour reached Lataji, she quickly turned to the networking site and updated: ‘Namaskar. Pls don't believe any rumors which are doing the rounds about my health & well-being. All is well, by the Grace of God.’ The rumour even got Madhur Bhandarkar to call her. He later wrote on his official page about her well-being: ‘Stop this baseless rumour. Lata didi is absolutely fine and kicking. I just spoke to her.’

Splitsville for Deepika and Siddharth?

Deepika Padukone’s romance with Kingfisher scion Siddharth Mallya lasted a little over a year. Now, their game is over. Deepika let the world know her relationship status by updating the status and picture on her BlackBerry phone. She replaced her picture with a dark patch and wrote ‘Game Over!’ So does this mean she considered her relationship with Mallya Junior a game? Reasons of their break-up are unknown. Last year, Siddharth seemed totally into her as it was apparent to everybody. He accompanied her everywhere, even on family holidays and even lost weight to look good by her side. He became hot property in the media. Maybe it was his friendship with models and pretty girls that Dippy didn’t fancy too much or they just grew bored of each other. We can only speculate. — HRM

From films to television

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has confirmed that his debut TV production will launch on Star Plus in the coming weeks. While the details of the show are still unknown, reports suggest that it is based on a Gujarati family, which is split with one half living in India and the other in abroad. The show stars Chetan Pandit and Monica Bedi.

When Remo turned red

Who made the tough guy Remo turn beetroot red? It was Master Geeta Kapur who dedicated an entire act in this week's Maha-episode of DID on how Remo and his wife, Lizelle, first fell in love with each other years ago. Contestant Paul, who idolises Master Remo, did full justice to the act with his immaculate sense of timing and display of emotions supported by the talented Urvashi. That certainly made the tough guy melt, didn’t it?

Heavy duty

We get chatty with Heavy Petting host Seema Rahmani about her new film and sharing a phone kiss. One of the most popular names in Indian film industry, Seema is now back with a new movie called Good Night, Good Morning. We get talking to her to find out about her new film and lots more.

Tell us about Good Night, Good Morning.

The film is about strength in commitment, coping styles, defence mechanisms and the instinctual drive for love in people. Turiya is played by Manu Kumaran, a Philadelphia-based young man, as he and his friends drive home from New York City, and my character Moira, is put up at the New Yorker hotel because of a delayed flight she is to catch in the morning. The film is about a conversation on the phone.

Do you think phones have become a girl’s best friend when it comes to relationships?

Technology cannot be anyone’s best friend. You need compassion, love and understanding for a best friend.

Are there any intimate scenes that happen during the film?

There are a couple of quick kisses, a couple of hugs and a phone kiss. But there are several intimate moments in sharing personal stuff in conversation; whether in a light-hearted way or a more serious tone. It’s all there.

You also host a show called Heavy Petting. Are you an animal lover?

That’s like asking if a fish can swim. (Laughs) Yes, I love all of God’s creatures.

Despite a hectic schedule, how do you manage to stay fit and have such a glow?

My skin has its good days and not so good days. It’s usually when I’m at peace and filled with tremendous joy that my skin glows best. And when I feel love within me strongly.

Which actor/actress you would like to work with and why?

Naming all would be difficult. I have shared screen time with a couple of actors I respect tremendously, like Pankaj Kapoor, and I so loved it. It was a TV serial called Karamchand in which I played the mystery villain and he was the recurring protagonist of the series. Ranbir Kapoor too works beautifully into his role. —HRM

The show was beamed in America while it aired in India but he says his 23-year-old, who lives there, couldn’t make time for watching his capsules on weekends.

Recently, the actress took a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) course, while holidaying in Koh Samui in Thaliand and is now an official scuba diver. Way to go, girl!

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is February 5...

There will be certain new developments around you, which will bring opportunity for growth. Accept fresh proposals for a job or business, which may entail a lot of travel. Financially the year will be full of promises. Those dealing in real estate, stock markets, food-grains, transportation and consumer goods; will make handsome profits through their new transactions. Your desire to make a fresh start, to take the initiative and strike out on your own will bring in success. Your energy and courage will be intensified. Unless you channel your abundant energy into decisive action or vigorous work, accidents, anger, and irritability are likely at this time. Then when this time period is finished you can enjoy the extra income you'll earn. At the moment you must wait and occupy yourself only with small things. You will be victorious but you must not display this too much: use this period to analyse everything and be prepared to the best of your ability. You will gain strength and success. You're consumed with self-doubt, for no good reason. Stop questioning everything you do and say. Just be natural. If you make a mistake or social gaffe, laugh it off. Nobody will judge you. Part of the problem is you don't give yourself enough credit. You're warm, steadfast, and affectionate. These are reasons why people love you. An overly possessive lover needs to be held at bay. You can't stand being monitored all the time. Avoid being brusque and act with diplomacy. Although an extreme shift makes adjustment arduous, help is on the horizon.  Invest only in essentials!  You will soon need funds in reserve.  Although strife is entirely unavoidable, a crisis can be assuaged through relief that comes at a heavy price. Married ones will feel more relaxed and will succeed in making up with their mate. You have a good relationship that you should endeavour to maintain. Youngsters will be making plans for holidays in the company of friends. Financial position is rather good. Competition will be high.
