Fashion designer Anuj Sharma, in Chandigarh to conduct a workshop, talks about the practicality of his three-season-old collection Button Masala

Anuj Sharma
DESIGNER CUT: Anuj Sharma

Copy and paste someone else’s design in the fashion industry, the next day the designer is tagged as a plagiarist. That’s how it has been — being original is the parameter of being talented.

On a second thought, to what extent an original collection per se is original? No designer invents colours; these have been there forever. The embroideries, patterns and silhouettes are age-old as well, only permutations and combinations have changed. “Yet the irony is that every designer claims to be original. It’s important to understand that there is a difference between innovating and improvising. I believe all designers do the latter,” says fashion designer Anuj Sharma, who along with interior designer Nitin Patel was in Chandigarh to conduct a workshop at a fashion designing institute in Sector 8.

It has been three seasons since Anuj participated in the Lakme Fashion Week and the same time since he came up with a new collection. His hit collection, Button Masala, which is about making different garments from one piece of cloth by using buttons, is what keeps him busy still. “It’s not a mere season’s collection for me. It’s an idea I want to propagate, take to people around the country and make them adapt it.” It’s adaptation and not plagiarism in this case for sure. “I want tailors to pick this art of making clothes. Instead of the tedious stitching, all one needs to do is button up a cloth in different ways.”

Anuj’s enthusiasm, even after two years of launching this collection, hasn’t faded one bit. Chandigarh is the fifteenth city he has visited in the last 12 days. For the same cause, he took workshops at NID, various NIFTs and other fashion designing institutes. He next plans to take the concept to retail stores. “We tested and experimented a lot with the concept of Button Masala. There were initial fears that the buttons might open up and result in a wardrobe malfunction. Now, when the R&D is complete, the idea should be used by the retail sector.” Since the creations are cost and time effective, he wants to take the collection to women self-help groups and NGOs.

In between everything he is doing to promote the concept, the very practical aspect that can’t be ignored - finances. If small-time tailors and boutiques adopt his way of styling and there is no copyright on the idea, how will he make money? “Healthy competition is the way to success. Everybody’s designs will be different, only the premise of using buttons will remain the same.” Ever thought buttons could be so indispensable?

The concept of space has changed. Till a decade ago, it was how to fill up space, now it is how to create some! Interior designer, Nitin Patel, feels the former was much easier. “Filling in isn’t difficult. Bring in a couch, a console, some décor material and it’s all full. Try creating space in a ten by eight room, how will you fill in now? Interior designing, more than the décor, is about creating space now. The dynamics of space management has changed.”Nitin is working with leading brands and interior designing for their retail stores. “Every segment has to have some space dedicated to it. Its well oraganised; in every store, there is space dedicated to men, women and kids clothing.” Nitin has also worked on the Khalsa Heritage project in Anandpur Sahib.

Reviving fashion
Wendell Rodricks’ book to highlight age-old Goan fashion

Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks has penned a book Moda Goa: History and Style, which talks about the factors that shaped Goa’s distinct garment style.

Rodricks, who has begun a grassroots campaign to revive the Kunbi sari woven by Kunbi tribes of the region in a designer avatar through his fashion shows, said being a designer it’s important to bring forth the fashion of his region first.

“It’s important to revive one’s own fashion first. There are many tribes in India which have distinct fashion but are lost amidst western influences in fashion. If our fashion designers start working on their own regions then automatically our own style can be reprised,” said Rodricks, during the launch of the book. Rodricks started his research 12 years ago and found how the various cultures coloured the Goan clothing range. “I used to dedicate three hours regularly for my research and after collecting massive information I started writing the book in 2009. It was in Goa that first ever Indo-Western garment evolved because of the influence of the Portuguese, who invaded Goa before 0moving to Eastern India,” he added. —PTI

Matter of Trust
Trust is difficult to keep in the testing times that we live in. We get you help on how to build an environment replete with it…
Mona

Trust is a tricky thing; it takes ages to gain it and one split second to lose it. If today we are leading a life full of stress, one huge factor responsible for it is the lack of trust. Be it familial, social or professional bonds trust is increasingly missing, making life more challenging than ever before.

We did a quick round to find out how people maintain trust in different walks of life.

Work on the self

It all starts with the self. If we want to trust people, we first need to be trustworthy. “Each of us has three personalities. One that you think you are; one what people think you are and the third what you actually are,” says Priya Tandon, director at a stock broking company, a writer and mother of three children. “It’s only when we have coordination between our thoughts, words and deeds that we are able to create an atmosphere of trust around us,” quips Priya, who likes to lead by example be it at home or work place.

Be on the same page

Considered one of the closest relationships, husband-wife bond isn’t sacred any more. Going by the rise in the graph of adultery and divorces, even marriages are not spared from the troubles of the times. But then if one is ready to work upon it, trust can be gained and kept.

Dipin Dhingra and Anna (a Russian settled in Chandigarh) went against the norms to marry. Time tested their resolve as any other couple; they learnt the lesson fast though. “In our generation, most of the digressions happen over social networking sites. When trouble started brewing in our paradise, we both deleted our individual accounts to make a joint one,” shares Dipin, regional manager with Dell Authorised Service Centres. Not only this, the couple shares numbers of their friends and colleagues. “We try to be on the same page. What I do she knows and vice-versa. Sharing, we feel, is the foundation of the trust,” he adds.

Communication & confidence

Any bond requires some level of confidence to last. City-based Punita Singh says, “The very first rule of building trust is being communicative; second is keeping issues to oneself.” Things go haywire only when the parties concerned move out of the precincts of bonds and talk about our trouble to others. “It works if you share the problem with the person concerned and not everyone else who are not a party,” Punita suggests. “Also, one needs to keep in mind that people evolve with time. If one is able to keep pace with the partner trust gets cemented, which makes the relationship stronger,” she quips.

Cultivate the habit

“Be ready to keep your word if you want to trust and be trusted,” says motivational speaker Priya Kumar. It’s difficult to build trust, but if one is determined it’s not impossible either. One needs to cultivate some habits. “Thinking good of others in daily actions builds trust; if you are caring towards your fellow colleagues, friends, family and do not indulge in actions that you know will upset them, you can build trust,” she says.

mona@tribunemail.com

Testing times

In a setting where we all are competing against each other, trust is difficult to find. “In a society where the whole value system is changing, the very family where the foundation of trust is laid is missing. Where are the grandparents, uncles, aunts and home full of cousins that taught us important values like sharing, caring and trusting? Unless we curb the urge to surge ahead of others in every walk of life, trust is a difficult to build,” says city-based sociologist Sherry Sabbarwal.

The right impression

Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar says that actor Riteish Deshmukh recently paid him a visit to take his and his wife Saira Banu’s hand impression for his upcoming museum called Legends Walk in Mumbai, a desi version of the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“Last week, Riteish Deshmukh, my dear friend Vilasrao Deshmukh’s talented son, visited us with his life-casting expert to get impressions of my hands and Saira’s hands which will be in a museum he proposes to have for cinema lovers,” Dilip Kumar wrote on his blog thedilipkumar.mouth shut.com.

“It took only a quarter of an hour for the team to get the mixture ready and get our hands imprinted on the mould which I am told will be imaged on metal for display in the museum.

“It is Riteish’s brain child and it is his way of telling those of us, who spent the best years of our lives entertaining and, hopefully, impacting people’s minds through our films, that our hard work and contributions to the growth of the medium have not been in vain,” he further posted.

Riteish is set to tie the knot with his long time girlfriend Genelia D’souza on Friday and the 89-year-old wished them saying, “I have heard from my family about Riteish’s gift for excelling in comedy. I have known him for some years now as a well-bred young man doing his parents proud. I hope to be at his wedding and share the Deshmukh family’s happiness on the occasion.”

Riteish, who is set to launch a Legends Walk in Mumbai soon, has already got the handprints of as many as 25 legendary actors of the Hindi film industry, including the likes of Shashi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Sadhana and megastar Amitabh Bachchan. —IANS

Chill Out
A Goa beyond Churches and Beaches
Suparna-Saraswati Puri

Being a keen student of history does have its moments of trial, particularly if one is in Goa for a school batch reunion. Though it was my second visit to the city, coincidently again during the monsoon, I was happy and quite excited to be in Goa. As the stay was intended to be a short and memorable sojourn with schoolmates catching up after a quarter of a century, my planned desertion from the group for a day met its fair share of hullabaloo. However, an adamant student of the past simply excused herself and strode off for a bit of an adventure.

Clearly not intending to go on a typical guided tour of the once Portuguese domain I headed for the Spice Plantations. The choice for the selected destination was made on a simple fact, my eternal fascination with foods and fragrances. Priding myself as a culinary experimenter here was a remarkable opportunity to experience a place where cardinal to cooking i.e. Spice(s) are found in forms that are a departure from their familiar appearances.

Blessed with a climate conducive for spice cultivation, in Goa the selection of a must see plantation can be a confusing exercise for first time visitors to such venues. In my case, help came from the taxi chap who understood the reasons for my visitation to a spice forest. Nestled amidst hills in the village of Savoi, 25 km from the capital city of Panjim, I was driven to the Savoi Plantation that sprawls on an area of a hundred acres and is over two centuries old. Founded by the patriarch of the Shetye clan, it was in 1985 that the young blood of family Shetye namely, Sachin and Sudesh developed the ancestral land as a tourist locale while sustaining the family business of a totally organic spice cultivation.

The fatigue of a somewhat long and meandering drive disappears the moment one sets afoot in the bewitching environs of this spice forest. With the rains enhancing the lush greenery of the surrounding hills, Savoi’s terraced field valley with stray buffaloes grazing is far more picturesque and enchanting than Goa’s beaches and churches put together! The quietness of the plantation welcomes you prematurely just as you enter the premises and buy a ticket for what is surely an aromatic experience.

The wood planked bridge over a rivulet with ducks wading in gay abandon is truly a privileged sight, one that can mesmerise any urban visitor. In addition to the natural scenic beauty, a feature unique to Savoi plantation is the fact that the families employed to work are housed on the estate and are entitled 25 per cent as shareholders of its produce. Moreover, Adding colour to the spice forest is their craft that varies during the different seasons that Goa enjoys the year around.

Another enticing feature of the place is its traditional Goan cuisine served in mud pots and banana leaf plates along with seasonal fruits grown on the estate. Prepared under the supervision of the matriarch of family Shetye, the buffet comprises of a sumptuous spread of vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes along with salad and goan pickle. In keeping with the proverbial saying, “Pehle pait pooja phir, kaam dooja”, an indulged mealtime is then followed by the anticipated tour into the spice forest.

First to encounter on the tour is a functional traditional feni distillery customised for household consumption in Goan villages. One is also surprised to learn of a hundred per cent utility that a cashew nut fruit bears. Optimum use of the fruit’s medicinal properties have allowed the rural folk to keep doctors away from their homes, till date. As the expert for the tour escorts one through a somewhat dense growth, the aromatic air begins to intoxicate ones senses. The tour is exciting and engaging as the expert quizzes on the different spices growing in their natural environs. For instance, figuring a tiny green pod on a creeper plant that grows very close to the ground (green cardamom) was quite a revelation. Similarly, the aroma of a clove leaf and a bay leaf is very similar prior to the former maturing. The growth stages of a pepper - corn and the varied types of pepper procured during the process is another metamorphosis of the spice unknown to most urban consumers. The hour-long tour acquaints one with spice exotics like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom as well as medicinal herbs like turmeric and fruits like mango, chikoo and cashew that are also grown on the Savoi estate.

A heady yet truly memorable experience concludes with a hearty shopping of the organic spices in the outlet on the estate. Competitive pricing indulges one to be a hoarder who ends up paying dearly at the airport for his/her foolishness!

Master Chef
Macaroni miniatures
Kandla Nijhowne

Everyone loves macaroni and cheese! If you're good and normal, you probably do as well. The melted creaminess of cheese, wrapped around firm elbow shaped macaroni are like heaven on a platter. Can you visualise the same creamy textured macaroni encrusted in bread crumbs and deep fried to a golden perfection? Why not? Even ice cream has been fried into a new avatar, so why not macaroni? You can shape them, coat with egg and crumbs, then refrigerate them till needed. Then all they need is a quick dunking in hot oil, and presto! You have the most delectable macaroni miniatures!

Mac and cheese balls

n 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
n 2-3 tbsp butter
n 2 tbsp maida

n Salt and pepper to taste
n ¾ cup thin cream
n 1 cup grated cheese
n 2 tsp tabasco or any other chilli sauce
n 1 cup bread crumbs
n 1 egg

Method

Boil the macaroni in a generous amount of salted water. Reserve ½ a cup of water and drain away the rest. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add maida. Stir briskly to prevent burning. Reduce the heat, add the cream and stir rapidly till it thickens slightly. Add the cheese and stir further, seasoning it with salt and pepper. Fold in the drained macaroni and some of the reserved water if necessary. The mixture should remain quite firm. Spread the crumbs on a shallow platter. Beat the egg with a tablespoonful of water. Now work to shape the pasta into golf-sized balls and roll them, one by one in the crumbs. Dip them in the awaiting egg wash, then back again into the crumbs. Press gently to ensure there are no air pockets in them. Chill for half an hour to firm them up. Deep fry briefly in hot oil, drain and serve with tomato sauce or a cheesy, peppery white sauce.

Trouble Shooter
Mind your business
Simmi Waraich

I am an NRI and live in the US. Due to relationship problems and job stress I had visited a psychiatrist there who suggested Mindfullness based cognitive training. What is this? Is it like Mindfulness meditation?

Ramandeep Singh, Panchkula

Mindfulness is a new concept in dealing with distressing thoughts which cause anxiety or depression. However, the technique itself is old and based on Buddhism. It is a way of observing thoughts, images and feelings in an accepting way without getting involved in them and without trying to distract oneself from the thoughts. So, it becomes important to learn to deal with negative thoughts and ideas on a daily basis by simply accepting them. By simply letting the thoughts be. Like clouds come and go in the sky, one is taught to accept thoughts as transitory phenomenon which come and go. Mindfulness is being used to treat many physical and psychological problems, including stress, anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, chronic pain, addiction and eating disorders etc.

How does it work? When someone has constant negative thoughts, they tend to analyse their thoughts. They want to find a solution to problems in their thinking in the same way as they would want a practical solution to the problems faced in every day life, i.e. career, health, financial, external conditions in the world around them. However, the negative thoughts we get are often linked to early childhood experiences and become fixed.

One is taught to distance oneself from these thoughts and accept them – just as we accept happy thoughts so we learn to accept negative thoughts by recognising them as just thoughts. When one does that, then one tends to stop reacting to them. If we think one negative thought, we tend to link them to other similar incidents in our life. For instance, if one thinks they are going to fail an exam or be rejected by someone they want to ask out on a date, then one’s mind goes back to all the other times things went wrong till it seems that it is an impossible task!

Stop for a moment and reflect on the following questions: Have you been paying attention to what you are doing right now? When eating, just eat, when sitting in the sun, feel the sun seeping into your bones. In Mindfulness, during the day just practice drawing your attention to what is going on around you- the quiet sound of your breathing, the feel of the air in the room, the ache in your back. Also on the drive to work- notice the trees around, the people on the street, the new flowers. Remind yourself to “Just be in the moment.”

My daughter does not like her new school. It is a good school and I don’t understand why she wants to change but she is adamant. One girl in her class says some girls bullied her one day. What should I do?

A Dhillon, Jalandhar

Try and find the reasons for this. Sometimes children may get bullied or be sensitive to someone commenting on them. Talk to her. Remind your child that he or she isn't alone — a lot of people get bullied at some point. Emphasise that it's they who are behaving badly — not her. Sometimes an older sibling or friend can help deal with the situation. It may help your daughter to hear how the older sister she idolises was teased about her braces and how she dealt with it. Sometimes it's useful to approach the bully's parents. In other cases, teachers or counselors are the best ones to contact first. If you've tried those methods and still want to speak to the bullying child's parents, it's best to do so in a context where a school teacher or a counselor, can mediate.

Weight watch
Take a break
Swapana Singla

Resting or relaxing can make your process of weight loss better. A weekly off from work helps you perform better at work and a yearly holiday is required to charge yourself for the whole year.

One fourth of your daily full exercise schedules should be just lying down on a mat with palm facing the ceiling or just lying down on your left side of your body or sitting with your legs folded and hands and palm resting on the sides.

Why should we do this?

When we exercise, our basic aim is to put our body in such a situation, where there is fast breathing like gasping, pain in the muscles and increase heart rate. All this helps in breakdown in your body tissues and increased metabolism. When you rest after an episode of cardio or say put your muscle to relax after lifting weights, your body has to work from within to come back to its basic state of normal breathing and normal heart rate. And during this internal work the body loses few calories.

But the fun starts after rest, when you get back on your treadmill or lift those weights to exercise.

This makes you to start from square one to achieve the same gasping and increased heart rate, which doubles your calorie losses than the previous round of exercise.

How do we do this?

After a good warm-up, check your pulse rate by keeping hand on your left radial artery, note it, then take up the treadmill or skipping rope and run/skip very fast such that your pulse is doubled. Then take rest and get your pulse to where you started. Don’t overdo, 3- 5 minutes on the treadmill is more than enough. This 5 minutes should be gradually increased with stamina.

How does this work?

n It increases your BMR many folds.

n Increases your stamina and power.

n You can work out for long.

n The mantra: bring changes

After exercising regularly, your body system also gets immune and bored and if you have to break this, bring changes in your workout pattern weekly. Introduce dance, kick-boxing, aerobics to make exercise fun. No matter how desperately you want to lose weight, one has to take weekly break from your gym or work out. This really fastens weight loss.

You may have planned a torturing menu the whole week, but at weekend eat and laugh with your family and friends, so that with you, your body is also ready for the forthcoming hectic week.

Avoid getting stressed out about your weight loss, because stress causes depression which slows down your BMR and increases weight.

Single pattern exercising is not what we want. Plan strategies and make weight loss interesting.

Star Track
Vidya opts out of Shootout

Vidya Balan walked out of Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala to avoid being linked with John Abraham again. Kangana Ranaut will fill in her shoes.

Vidya and John were paired in Salaam-e-Ishq and they were linked romantically so they stopped working together. Now, John is dating Priya Runchal and Vidya is with Siddharth Roy Kapur. Moreover, Vidya felt the role was not worthy of her talent, given the success of The Dirty Picture. Shootout at Wadala is a male-dominated film.

Shootout at Wadala is based on the encounter of Don Manya Surve in 1981.

Kangana was keen on working with Balaji again after Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. A source says, ‘Ekta and Sanjay were looking for a new heroine and they thought Kangana would be great for the role. John and Kangana will be paired together for the first time in this movie. The role is a powerful one. She will have two different looks in the movie which have been drawn from a few different movies through the decades. Kangana is very excited to do the movie. Ekta and Sanjay chose her because she is a terrific actress who can pull off any role and has a versatile appearance and personality. Kangana had a relatively fun role in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai but this one is more rustic and very intense and important. It will be her most intense role in a while as she has been doing comedies lately.’

Shootout at Wadala will release later this year.

Kangana is a spendthrift...

Kangana Ranaut
Good life: Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut is known for changing her look every now and then and having fun with fashion. She spends most of her salary on living the good life and she thoroughly enjoys it. She talks about her philosophy and extravagances.

I believe…

I believe if you have money, you should spend it on yourself and whatever you like while you are young. I am independent and proud of it. I would rather wear great clothes, shoes, and jewellery now than when I am fifty because I won’t look as good then. Wealth is best enjoyed when you are young.

No savings

My father asks me to save all the time but I don’t really do it. I am very proud of myself because I am only into my twenties and I have a lovely flat, a great wardrobe, a National Award, a luxury car, and I can go on a fancy holiday whenever I want. Shopping is my weakness and I shop mostly from Paris and Italian cities so that burns a hole in my pocket. I love dining too and fine wine and caviar and great food with lovely conversations are my favourites. Sometimes, I pack my bags and go anywhere I like, on my own.

Right spellings

I would like to clarify that my name is spelt Kangana Ranaut. That is my correct spelling and I hope people use it.

Sunday fun

I spend Sundays at home with my family. We cook together and eat, watch movies, and just laze around. It feels so good to be with family.

Money wise

I was born in a financially well-off family and my grandfather spoilt us as children with his pension money. Then I started earning from the age of seventeen. So I don’t value money that much as it has come easily to me.
I hope it continues this way. My parents advice me on investments
and the like because I don’t understand all that! Maybe, some years later I will become wise with money. — HRM

Akshaye at his best

Actor Akshaye Khanna says it wasn’t a conscious decision not to sign too many films, adding that he can’t think of associating himself with anything and everything.

“It’s not that I avoid signing many films in a year but, yes, I don’t want to associate with anything and everything,” Akshaye, whose forthcoming film Gali Gali Mein Chor Hai is releasing Friday said in an interview. “ Gali Gali... happened because the script attracted me and I didn’t stop myself from giving the nod to the movie. It was a spontaneous decision and now I can confidently admit that this role is so far my best role.

“People from the lower middle class to high officials will relate to my character, who is a middle-class family man. This is what makes this role one of the benchmarks in my career,” added the actor who was last seen in Farah Khan’s directorial venture Tees Maar Khan.

The theme of Gali Gali Mein Chor Hai is corruption in the Indian system. However, the actor claims there is hardly any scope for such illegal practices in filmdom.

“In today’s time, there is no place where corruption is not prevalent, but I feel proud to be part of the industry where there is no scope for corruption. We wake up, go to work, finish it off and then come back...where is the time to think about shortcuts?” Akshaye said.

The movie grabbed headlines when Anna Hazare, who has been pioneering the anti-corruption movement in the country, watched Gali Gali...

“Since I always keep a low profile and avoid getting into limelight, I feel fortunate enough in not being part of any corruption-related issue,” he added.

In the movie, the problem of corruption is told through the eyes of bank cashier Bharat, played by Akshaye, who accidentally gets caught in the corrupt system and the more he tries to wriggle out, the deeper he sinks into it.

While Momukshu Mudgal has penned the story, Rumi Jafri has helmed the project, which also has Shriya Saran, Mugdha Godse, Satish Kaushik and Annu Kapoor who will be seen taking the story forward.

The 36-year-old has films like Taal, Border, Dil Chahta Hai, Hungama, Hulchul, Gandhi — My Father and Race to his credit. His next will be Chand Bhai with Vidya Balan. — IANS

Agneepath is South bound

Usually Bollywood is busy remaking hits from down South but now things are happening the other way around. After Jab We Met and 3 Idiots, Karan Johar’s remake of Agneepath will be remade down South.

The Hrithik Roshan starrer directed by first-timer Karan Malhotra has grossed more than Rs 75 crore already and has been the biggest hit for Dharma in a long, long time. Karan’s dream about a successful Agneepath has come true stunningly! There have been parties all through last week and the team cannot stop smiling! Johar is receiving many calls from directors and filmmakers down South to buy the rights of the film because it is the perfect commercial masala film.

A source tells us, ‘Karan is very elated with the success of the film. The cost was recovered through sales of various rights and he then waited for the box office response which has been awesome, indeed! Now, people wanting to remake the film is the cherry on his cake. He has been meeting people over the weekend and he will finalise whom the rights will be sold to. He will go with his instincts and whoever he feels will do justice to his family’s beloved and cherished film.’

So will Katrina Kaif do an item song in Southern remake? Or will be it be Vidya Balan? That only time will tell! — HRM
