Not so friendly B-town!
Once upon a time in Mumbai… there were two friends, who worked and partied together. Their friendship was looked upon by people, till that day when equations changed, when loyalties drifted, when Farah Khan and husband Shirish Kunder opted for Akshay Kumar instead of long-time friend Shah Rukh Khan for their next venture, Tees Maar Khan.
The film bombed at the box-office and couldn't repeat the success of SRK and Farah Khan's projects. For what he is known for, SRK poked fun at the couple. Only if he had an idea that his dream venture, Ra.One would meet the same fate and that Shirish could muster courage to mock at him! It all happened, only with a difference, Shrish was reportedly beaten up by
SRK. Now, 'star war' is not something new to the industry. In fact that's how it has been — friends often turn foes in the glam world. For that matter, take the case of extremely successful pair — Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Their fans still wonder what made them part ways! It's the repeat of the story with SRK and Salman Khan. So, what makes friendship so feeble a bond in Bollywood? Can competitors in the industry never work cordially? Ashley Rebello, ace fashion designer and celebrity stylist, who has observed the industry from close quarters, gives his take, "There is no other profession, no other industry, where tables turn every Friday; where you are as good or bad as your last film. Insecurity in such a scenario is but obvious. You see the most stable minds get into slugfest and fights. Immense competition is the main culprit." Two years back, in an interview to a leading magazine, Priyanka Chopra showered praises on her contemporary Kareena Kapoor. And then Koffee with Karan, Season 3 happened. Kareena Kapoor wanted to know, "From where did Priyanka get her accent." And Priyanka raised doubts on Kareena's technological abilities by asking if she owns a laptop at all. Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee too fell apart after some good years of friendship. Queenie Singh, a socialite, who has seen the top ring of the society evolve, says friendship in Bollywood is difficult to sustain. "Not for the reason that actors are not social enough, but because the stakes are very high and competition is enormous. When an actor loses a role in the film, he loses big bucks and a chance to be at the top again, if the film fares well. The stress levels are so high that it becomes difficult to make out who is a friend and who's not." Except for a very few cases like SRK and Karan Johar, Onir and Sanjay Suri, Hrithik Roshan and Kunal Kapoor, there aren't many examples in the industry of long-term friendships. It gets worse in case of female actors, besides Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora, there isn't another example. Onir explains the situation, "Success of actresses is usually measured by which superstars they are pitted against. Also their career span as compared to male actors is almost half, which means more insecurity and intense rivalry." Queenie on the other hand cites the reason that actresses don't get enough time to socialise. But for Onir, whose friendship with Sanjay Suri is ten years old, it's not spending enough time but trust that strengthens the bond. Wonder what happened between Farah Khan and SRK, was there lack of trust or the time wasn't right! ashima@tribunemail.com

Destiny’s child
Sudeepa Singh, whom we have seen in a lot of television commercials, Punjabi movies such as Yaraan Naal Baharan and Ek Noor; Bollywood film Action Replayy opposite Aditya Roy Kapoor says that she never wanted to go in for acting!
"I never wanted to become an actor ever, but I believe in destiny a lot so now I'm full-time into acting. During my school days I was very studious and an all-rounder." And she always wanted to join the Army or the civil services. "During my college days Gajendra Singh hosted the Antakshari auditions in Amritsar and my music teacher literally forced me to participate in it." Sudeepa ended as the first runner-up in the singing reality show. "After that Ganjendra Singh and Gyan Sahay, director of photography, Zee Antakshari 2004, suggested that I try for the acting reality show Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj; even there I ended up as the first runner-up." So now we know that destiny wanted her to act! "I have done serials like Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao for Sony where I played the role of a visually-impaired girl; Ardhangini for Zee TV and more than 200 television commercials." Sudeepa was just eighteen when she did the Punjabi movie Yaaran Naal Baharan in 2005 with Jimmy Shergill, Juhi Babbar and Gurpreet Ghuggi. Ek Noor was another movie that showcased her talent. How did she feel when she got her first Bollywood offer? "Action Replayy was a great moment in my life, as it starred Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan; I was so excited to be part of such a big production house." Sudeepa firmly believes that modelling in commercials helps a lot. She even bagged the title of 'Ad Queen' for her outstanding performance in the commercials. "I'm madly in love with acting now, but it needs a lot of determination and hardwork. I think as an actor there is no destination; you have to prove yourself each day." If she is good with acting she can never ignore the fact that somewhere she has a singer within her as well. "As for singing, I definitely want to do a Sufi album as there are less female singers who are into it, but before that I will need some good training." This year she will be focusing more on her career. "Last year I was busy handling my construction business in Mumbai, so had no time although lately I have been hosting a lot of shows." Even as she promises to catch up with the screen, we wait for her in Chandigarh when she comes for the PTC Punjabi Awards in February! sabiatalwar@tribunamail.com

Magic in motion
"Dance needs no language" — stands true for the magic of Indian classical dance. Geeta Mahalik, inheritor of the centuries-old tradition of Odissi dance, made her presence felt just as she entered the Government College of Girls, Sector 11. Invited for a lecture demonstration by the Department of Dance, in association with the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), she enthralled everyone.
Geeta not only provided a descriptive version of the elegant movements, but also spoke at length about the precious dance form. Talking about the history of the dance forms, Geeta, dressed in elaborate silver jewellery and structured head gear, says, "Odissi originated in Puri, where young girls, Maharis, worshipped Lord Jagganathan through song and dance." At a later stage, Gitipuas or young boys became an integral part of the dance form. Soon, the artiste presented the Mangalacharana, offering flowers to Natraj. As music filled in, her perfectly graceful hand-feet coordination swept the audience off their feet. Despite a pin, which pierced through her foot, not a single movement lost sync. Talking about the next mudra, she says, "The Pallavi involves the 'no-expressions' of the face and focuses on two postures — Chowk, which looks like a square and Tribhang, which resembles the three bends of the body." Performing Pallavi on the Basant Raag, her dance emitted life in each posture. Decades of devoted training under eminent gurus and her own creative choreographic compositions result in a perfect blending of the best that the dance offers. Moving on, she spoke at length about Abhinay. "It is like drama in dance, where each word has meaning and a story," she says. The expressional dance entails movements, through mudras, hand gestures and bhavas, facial expressions. Fluid and graceful in appeal, the dance form is widely used to enact the epics like Ramayana. Taking a break from the definitions and meanings, the danseuse performed the Ram Stuti, a complete dance version of the intricate Ramayana. From Sita's abduction to the Lakshman Rekha, each hand, eye, foot movement elucidated grace, charm and a flawless flow. It is only when proponents like her come to the forefront that frivolous and jarring movements of Sheilas and Chamelies loose meaning and the true, rich cultural heritage of Indian classical dance tends to shine through. vasudha@tribunemail.com

Work
& play
Work-life balance is difficult to maintain, especially in the corporate sector! Some of the jobs demand commitment levels that are more than what are required to run a marriage! So, it is but natural that incentives have to be the driving force. Working holidays are one among them, where employees get to work and enjoy with their families at the same time. Well, that’s a good deal for the hard-working corporate guys as they get to spend at least some time with their family!
“Working holiday is a great incentive for the employees, as one gets to work in the day and can spend some quality time with the family in the evening,” says Abhishek Sood and employee of a telecom company. “But this is not a paid holiday from the company; the employee has to pay for his family’s stay and other expenditure.” Well, who minds the money when the family is together! “While the concept of taking employees to foreign locales is old now, working holiday has replaced it,” says Ritika Gupta, ex-employee of a private bank. She adds, “Nowadays all companies in the world are wooing employees with exotic trips, but it’s a good thing that they are thinking about the families too as it gives the employees an opportunity to work and travel at the same time.” Promoting working holidays, Deepak Mittal, MD, Kanatal Resorts & Spa at Dhanaulti, near Mussorie, says, “It’s not just the multinationals and foreign banks that are flying their teams for working holidays, home-grown corporations are also taking their employees for such trips. And almost every resort and high-end hotel is equipped to provide the best of the conference facilities and also customise the facilities according to specific needs.” While these kinds of holidays not only give valuable work experience to the employee, they also make the family and company bond better; they result in team-building and goodwill for the firm. He adds, “As a resort we have experienced a significant growth among Indian corporate clients. We at Kanatal Resorts take care of each and every requirement of our clients, be it stationary or audio and visual equipment or a special sitting arrangement. After their conference and business meetings the group relaxes at the spa and enjoys in the disc or bar or at the bonfire in the open air”. While hill stations seem to be the perfect choice for such kind of trips, SP Kochhar, CMD, Madhuban Group of Hotels, says, “These company-sponsored trips provide a good platform for creating right understanding, bonding and also boosts the confidence amongst the employees as well as the management. So, we cater to all their specific needs during the visit.” Well, for all those employees who haven’t had a vacation in a long time, there’s an option now!

Hazards of overtime
People who work 11 or more hours a day are more than two times likely to go through major depression compared to those working seven to eight hours a day, a new study has warned. The researchers, led by Marianna Virtanen of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London, followed about 2000 middle aged British civil servants and found a robust association between overtime work and depression.
This correlation was not affected when the analysis was adjusted for various possible confounders, including socio-demographics, lifestyle, and work-related factors. There have been a number of previous studies on the subject, with varying results, but the researchers emphasize that it is hard to compare results across these studies because the cut-off for “overtime” work has not been standardised. “Although occasionally working overtime may have benefits for the individual and society, it is important to recognize that working excessive hours is also associated with an increased risk of major depression,” said Dr Virtanen. The study was recently published in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Red alert!
Satish Narula Normally those living in flats feel left-out when it comes to talking about gardening. The conditions on the terraces are not gardener-friendly as there are constraints of water, light, wind, sun, shade etc. The conditions on the terraces are harsh and the gardeners feel lost when it comes to rearing plants under such conditions. But it is not so. There is solution for all such problems. Let us talk about the entry point of the house. Unlike the ground, there is no soil available on the floors. It has to be necessarily pot plants to decorate the entrance. And this is a must as the entry to the house is the reflection of the inside. In most of the cases, however, there will be hardly any sun near the entrance door. It is, therefore, prudent to go in for such plants that flourish under sun or no sun. There are some such plants out of which you can select the one depending upon the prevailing conditions. The entry to the house has to be inviting. Red is considered the colour of warmth and thus one should select such plants that bear red blooms. Nothing can beat poinsettia when it comes to spreading all red ambience. It is the deep red bracts at the top of the plant (and not the flowers that in this case or small and insignificant) that remain on the plant for a very long time, almost all through the winter. Normally one knows about poinsettia, the Fireball which grows tall and has a deep scarlet tuft of bracts at the terminal of branches but now are available the dwarf form of the plant that can be kept at the entrance. They are so lively and dwarf that they do not interfere with the free movement in and out. Another suitable plant is Crassula or the Klan-choe. The plant is xeorphytic and also the latest form available is too dwarf and bears deep red cluster of blooms at the top of the plant for almost all through the months of January to March. Another such plant suitable for such locations is Euphorbia the one with deep red blooms that appear at the plant terminals. Keep these plants in a line or as a group as the effect is more in formation. You can grow all the above said plants in small six inches pots. (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist) |

Frail friendship
Divya Dutta I woke up to phone calls smses, bbs, all discussing one thing — Shah Rukh's spat with Shirish Kunder! What intrigued me was not the incident per se, because in the King Khan's lines, Bade bade shehron mein to aisi baatein hoti hain senorita and in the film industry, no one is a permanent friend or a foe! It's an interesting musical chair all the time. Someone's friend is someone's enemy and a little later, tables turn! The way everyone is talking about and discussing the incident, it appears as if they were all personally present there. And of course, the sugar and spice added to the story. 'Are, did you hear about...' What we overlook is what the affected parties go through. Remember having met Shah Rukh for the first time in Connaught Place! He was shooing for Dil Se and I had gone to meet him as a newcomer. I was dumbfounded to see the enormous crowd in CP. No place to put your feet. I somehow made my way through and called him. He immediately sent his guards to fetch me. My big adventure! My first meeting with Shah Rukh Khan in a car! With the crazy fans banging on the windows to have a look of him and we having chai and chatting in Dilli ki sardi. That was Shah Rukh. Of course, later came Veer Zaara and we bonded as friends. Now, occasional 'hi's and smses. They say he's changed and is not open to criticism. But then isn't it natural for someone to reach the crazy height where he's alone and then being pulled down? It sure is tough! And all we say is-what happened to him? On the other hand, Farah Khan, my friendly, warm affectionate, protective neighbour for a very long time! Feels sad to see once great friends growing bitter, but such is the industry! Frail, insecure, pre-conditioned, where equations change every minute. I hope this one too changes for the better. Because I remember the good old days when I had seen them laughing together. (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

Doc Talk
It is the most common non-hormonal skin problem and a frequent cosmetic concern with a huge psychological impact, significantly affecting quality of life. I approach a patient keeping in mind the various mechanisms of under- eye dark circles, which is whether it is a dermal melanin or whether it is an exogenous cause which is causing under-eye dark circles like allergy or a deficiency, whether it is a laxity around the skin or whether the patient has fat protrusion. All these aspects should be kept in mind before we strategise. Various factors like hereditary/genetic factors, stress, allergies, lack of sleep and exhaustion, nutritional deficiency like iron deficiency, improper digestion, lack of vitamins and dehydration, mental stress, eye fatigue, medications causing vasodilatation, menstruation disorders, liver disease, pregnancy, anatomical differentiation – deep set bones may cause dark circle. Possible mechanisms include thin and translucent skin, leaky capillaries, poor microcirculation and capillary fragility. Management requires a multifaceted solution. General measures include increased water intake to keep skin hydrated, sufficient sleep, avoid scratching the under eye skin, diet rich in nutrients, sun protection measures. Definite treatment includes topical treatment, lasers and surgery. If your under-eye dark circles are caused by hyperpigmentation, local treatment includes bleaching agents such as hydroquinone has to be used in a diluted concentration; topical Vitamin K1 and retinol; kojic acid, isofavones, niacinamide, licorice extract and tetrahydrocurcumin combination, sabiwhite and cosmoperine combination; 5 per cent vitamin C. Among chemical peels, glycolic acid peels are the gold standard but advanced peels of a combination of kojic acid, glycolic acid and arginine have an edge over the standard glycolic peels but should be done by a dermatologist at right dilution otherwise there is risk of chemical burns. It must be remembered, however, that the best effects of any treatment would come on long term daily use, of three or four months or even six to eight months. This fact should be very clear to the patient. Mesotherapy and dermarollers have a wonderful role. Special cocktails are used. It improves the texture, eye bags and also brings down the pigmentation. It should be done by an expert dermatologist. Laser treatment includes vascular specific lasers which block the vessel response as well as pigment specific lasers, used to correct the pigment changes, using Nd: Yag. If superficial vascularisation (visible blood vessels) under your eye is the culprit, various laser treatments or IPL can help. These treatments must be done carefully to avoid harming other vessels in the eye area. If your dark under eye circles are caused by fat loss that creates hollows and shadows, the most common surgical remedy is fat transplant or fillers may do the trick. However, transplanted fat does not stay for longer periods. Now with availability of canula, there is no risk of bruising or further darkening of pigmentation in under-eye area. If it is a laxity around the eye, it can be treated with botox. Your dermatologist will go over the risks, benefits and costs of each of these procedures to help you make your decision on how to best eradicate under-eye circles. Aubry needs help
Halle Berry's ex Gabriel Aubry has reportedly agreed to enroll in anger management classes, after the two met up with representatives from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Social workers came to the conclusion that Aubry needed to work on his anger issues, and he has agreed to do so.
"Gabriel has a little bit of a temper, but the good news is that he realises it," a source said. The recommendation stems from an incident earlier this month in which Aubry allegedly pushed the nanny while she was holding Berry and his daughter Nahla. However, he is believed to have told social workers he never touched the nanny and she was making the story up to curry favour with Berry. There's also a criminal investigation focusing on child endangerment and battery but sources are confident that Aubry will not be prosecuted as it's a "he said she said" case.

The 29-year-old, who first shot to fame in Interview With The Vampire, has suffered from issues in the past but she insists she wouldn't change her upbringing despite staying in the limelight. "My parents did a really good job with me. I was a very extrovert kid and it felt normal to me to act. I've never been a prima donna so I never had problems. I always went to regular schools. I always had my seat at the cafeteria when I came back from acting and I never felt like an alien in my life because of what I did. "My mum wasn't my manager but she was always with me on set. She would bring the pasta machine and make home-made pasta wherever we went. My mum was way more laid back than my dad, so I had a good balance," Dunst said. — PTI
Holmes in Hollywood
British director Guy Ritchie is making a third Sherlock Holmes movie but this time it will be based in Hollywood.
The first two blockbusters - Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows have been set in London and incorporated some of the capital's most famous landmarks in its screen play. The film will see Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr in the lead role, similar to the previous ones. "Guy has loved making the movies and he gets on really well with all the cast. But Robert has had to spend large part of the year in the UK filming. So he will probably welcome the move back home. He loves the UK, and London in particular but having home comforts close by is such a big bonus," a source said.

The 51-year-old also said that unlike many other Hollywood actresses, she does not enlist the help of a personal dresser when she gets ready for such events. There is a little effort that goes into the planning, like, weeks ago but at this stage, it's only a matter of opening the box," Swinton said. Talking of other actresses, who have a slightly more high-maintenance routine when it comes to dressing for the red carpet, Swinton said, "You mean there's somebody in your hotel room who actually takes your clothes out of a suitcase and lays them out for you?" "I turn up in a pair of old corduroy trousers, and I'm very fortunate to have friends who send me boxes with gowns. It's like the Cinderella complex. It's the friends that make the effort, not me."

The year ahead
If your birthday is February 1...
This is a good year for you to implement new plans or schemes. Some of you are likely to purchase land to construct your own office in the near future. Others might start construction work on land that has been acquired earlier. You'll feel tired and dis-orientated by the excessive amount of work around April and will try to do the least possible to escape from responsibilities. Don't be put off by your partner's cold and inconstant behaviour, as it's just another way of showing that he or she is concerned. You'll have a great spirit of collaboration and this means you'll work well as part of a team. This will help both your income and self-esteem. Those born between 1960-2000 will be particularly active and organised. You will be making plans for your future along with your mate or beloved. It is perhaps your dream to have a quiet get-away home in the wilds that you are now determined to achieve. Those in love have a strong bond and will share intimate moments of togetherness. New career opportunities are in store for many engaged in fashion design, ad agencies and music industry, or in any other creative profession. Your health might require attention during the first half of 2012. Therefore you should take care of your health. Those who had been suffering from general weakness and headaches would find some relief. Nourishment of your body and soul are equally important and profoundly correlated to one another. Take care of your diet. Mood: Uncomfortable at times. Compatible Signs: Virgo, Capricorn, Leo. Lucky Colours: Maroon, White. Lucky Days: Saturday. Lucky Numbers: 1, 8, 17, 20, 28.
