A mind of his own
In Chandigarh, for an MTV show, Rabbi Shergill gives his take on music, reality shows and staying out of the Page 3 circuit
Jasmine Singh

Not as a practice will you pick up Oscar Wilde before going to sleep, unless of course you are a ‘literature’ fan. Leafing through some old pages, an essay by the poet and writer, The Soul Of Man Under Socialism, two lines highlighted with a marker catch the fancy.

While speaking to Sufi singer Rabbi Shergill as he performed for the MTV season 1 of MTV Unplugged in Chandigarh, partnered by Tissot watches, those lines without bearing direct context just seem apt for usage. ‘What is needed is individualism.’ Indeed, in our world where one reality show supersedes the other, where your credentials in the society are determined by the number of parties attended, this man thinks differently, out of the box. What is with him, you might wonder. With Rabbi Shergill, the problem is, “Why is the box always around me.” That’s a funny one! Coming from the philosopher and thinker Rabbi, it takes us a moment to grab the joke. “Humour is not a demerit, and I believe it opens a window for infiltration,” he shares. Food for thought people!

In the world, there are men of science, there are men of glamour and then there are men of few useful words, and a few useful songs. Rabbi finds place in the last category. Few, yet meaningful and out of the box music numbers, that’s his style? “When you say my style it means this is how I am going to be. I am always going to be shy of making that declaration. At the same time, I am never strayed too far from the rock, never strayed away from mainstream pop, I am never away from my song writing. This is what I do. I am inspired by good poetry, good words, which I incorporate in my singing.” Expect Rabbi to give away ‘not the interview kind of an answer.’ What makes this Bulla Ki Jaana Maina kaun and Tere Bin Sanu singer think out of the box. “Why is the box placed around me in the first case. Structures stifle me the most, why is there a need to think geometrically, the moment we start following a given structure, it suffocates,” shares Rabbi, whose next album will be hitting the stores anytime soon.

Even when Rabbi chooses not be a part of the geometrical structure, a number of dreamy eyed youngsters queue up for auditions of various reality shows. One kid hits the bloc and hundred others follow without sparing a though about their own fate! “Reality shows are a consequence of profit driven society, which teaches us not to think ahead. Society believes in instant gratification. These reality shows are creating endless numbers of singers. Don’t you think, we need songs more than singers,” he adds.

Despite giving music in films and being ‘the’ name in the music industry, Rabbi is never seen in the page 3 circle, bathing under archlights. “The whole thing about getting dressed, air kissing, no conversation, just being in a glitz and a glamorous place is too much work for me. I find playing guitar, being with friends, enjoying a lime scotch more charming than parties.” If he has to think, he will think differently. That’s Rabbi for you.

Style check

Either you have it or you don’t. This is true for style. MTV VJ Bani walked in the Tissot Shop, at Ethos Watch Company sporting her style and her new possession, Tissot PRC 200 watch. “My style has changed with time, I like elegant pieces. At the same time, I think sporty watches suit my style,” she says. “I don’t make a conscious effort to look stylish or make youngsters like me. I like being whatever I am comfortable in.”

All for love
Love is difficult, so is its expression. Those in love often show it to the world by ‘couple cloning’
Mona

Rashmeet & Sahil Sahil and Rashmeet have been married for the last three years. They know each other for ten years more. The couple starts their morning by hitting the gym in identical track suits in blue. Their office attires are usually the same colour — blacks, whites or greys.

He an education consultant and she a wedding planner; the couple wears reds, yellows and greens on their casual outings while on formal occasions dressing is immaculately planned. Couple cloning sure is in and a worldwide phenomenon now!

Sahil and Rashmeet fell in love more than a decade-and-a-half ago and when it comes to dressing, they like to make it similar. “Well, if not more at least 99 per cent of the times we dress up in similar colours. I admit we plan that for special occasions, but even in everyday wear we coincidently pick up the same colours,” says a bubbly Rashmeet. Guess it stems from their shopping together habit; their western wardrobe looks almost identical!

Couple cloning is a popular trend amid celebs. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as well as his ex Jennifer Aniston and her current beau are the hottest celebrities supporting the trend. In Bollywood as well, power couples Shahrukh-Gauri and Abhishek-Aishwarya follow the same trend. So do colours bind? “In a way,” says Kirti H Singh, director, Amtek Energy & Power Private Limited. For little over two decades, she and her husband have been wearing the same colours. Hartek being the managing director cannot always wear the colours his wife does, so he balances it out with his turban. This couple, who share the home as well as office space, are all for couple cloning. And, yes, it’s blue and red that they love. “Wearing similar colours make us associate with each other more and in a way completes us,” says Kirti, who generally picks up the clothes for both of them. “You know, over the years, I have felt that the days we wear same colours we bond better. The day starts on a better note and ends well.”

Manu and Manu (yes, this couple shares the name as well), executives in MNCs, who got married in last October match their dress for casual outings. “Not only does it make us happy, but also helps us track each other in a crowd,” says Manu.

Atul and Ashima, married for last five years go a step ahead. They usually shop keeping each other in mind. They both are in the BPO industry and have the same favourite colour — purple. “Whenever, I go shopping, whatever clothing article I pick, I always ask for a small for her,” says Atul.

What better way to bond together?

Way too high

High heels can permanently change the way women walk and put them at greater risk of strain injuries, scientists have determined. Short fibres in women’s calf muscles and can change the position of joints and muscles in the feet.

While it does not take a bio-mechanic to reveal that sometimes women suffer for their shoes, the study, inspired by the sight of tottering women walking around the researchers’ university campus, is the first to analyse the ongoing effects of high heels on the way people walk. The study, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, found that women who wore heels on a regular basis walked differently than others, even without their heels on, using shorter, more forceful strides. The muscles in the feet become fixed in a flexed position with the toes pointed, long after a pair of heels have been kicked off, researchers found.

Scientists at Griffith University in Queensland attached electrodes to the legs of nine women who regularly wore heels to analyse their muscle activity. The results were compared with those from a group of 10 women who rarely wore heels. The heel-wearers - who had all worn heels over 2in high for more than 40 hours a week for two years - were made to walk over a plate that gauged the forces generated by their footsteps 10 times with heels on, then 10 times without the heels. The flexed position of the foot puts greater strain on the calves, shortening the fibres in the muscle. A heeled gait strains the muscles instead of the tendons. Dr Neil J Cronin said he began the study after noticing women in high heels looking “uncomfortable” around his campus. — Agencies

An ace pop star and a top-notch businessman?

Michael Jackson’s evolution as an artist and a person went beyond his talents as a musician, a new book on the singer’s life has claimed. Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson has been written by music writer and University of Rochester instructor Joe Vogel.

In an exclusive interview Vogel talks about the late singer’s legacy as an entertainer, businessman and innovator and what lessons he offered all of us. “One of Michael Jackson’s greatest qualities was his ability to envision something in his mind – something bold and different and innovative – and then have the willpower and work ethic to realize it,” Live Science quoted Vogel as saying. “He was constantly challenging himself and those around him to push beyond the ordinary.

He often had friends and collaborators read Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a fable about refusing to conform and striving for excellence. You see, even with his This Is It concerts at the age of 50, he wouldn’t accept mediocrity. He wanted the shows to be unlike anything people had experienced before,” he said. Vogel also said that the King of Pop made “very good business decisions”. “Michael made very good business decisions for the first 10-15 years of his adult career, and very bad ones in his final 10-15 years.

“His smartest decision was to not only retain the rights to his own master recordings (before him, there was a long history of exploitation in the music industry, particularly of African-American artists), but to also actively acquire other publishing rights, including the Beatles catalog. “His worst decisions came when he had a lot of money and not much consistency or oversight. His management, beginning in the early ‘90s, became a revolving door. — ANI

The world is on sale
As Markets offer sale, we find out how and why some shoppers cannot control the urge to pick up things
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Once bedecked with smart clothing and fine trimmings the windows of most showrooms wear a ‘Sale’ look these days. Though it’s hard to find a piece that you would like to take home in the sale spree, but that does not stop the shopper in most of us and we end up picking stuff weather we need it or not!

The word sale triggers the shopping bug in all of us and makes us stereotypical shopaholics darting from one store to another to pick up anything and everything while racking up a hefty credit-card bill!

“Though sales leave a hole in the pocket and we end up buying stuff which we would normally not need, but shopping is a great mood enhancer and an effective stress buster,” says Preeti Dhillon, a business woman from Mohali. She adds, “But some extra shopping is justified as we all wait for sales to pick certain branded items, which can be expensive in a regular shopping spree.”

Well, there is no denying the fact that super-shoppers spend to boost self-esteem and researchers too say that buying behaviours can range from frivolous fun to serious addiction. But that’s some extreme cases and what we are refering to how much justified is over-shopping in sale.

"There are very few rational consumers; they buy what's on sale, or what they need and nothing else. On the other end, there are compulsive shoppers who buy to their own financial ruin and to relationship problems and then there are the rest of us somewhere in between who shop just because things are on discount,” says Neha Vohra, counselor in a local school.

On overspending she says, “Money is not an issue with lot of people these days and above all they have a legitimate reason for spending more: Discounts!”

“While like many other addictions, shopping fills some kind of void and going out for shopping makes you feel better. Some might argue that it is just an attempt to bolster your self-esteem but it's undeniable that shopping is a mood enhancer and sale is a definite time to splurge as you get branded stuff on great discounts, which otherwise are overpriced for the middle class.”

“Shopping is also a kind of celebration and at the end of it though sometimes you feel you have overspent but it is worth it as you can shop for double the stuff with the money you would have spent on a single item,” says Ridhima Arora who runs a botique in Mohali.

Agreeing that we tend to overspend in sales Prabhjot Kaur a homemaker from Mohali says, “Sales are an exciting time to buy. Though the stuff that is put on sale is from the past season and most of us are aware of the fact but that does not stop us from shopping and we do it on massive scale. But buying in sales cannot be wholly termed as useless because the stuff that is bought is always used even if it is for gifting alone!”

Friends Forever

Having supportive friends can mitigate the effects of bad experiences and confer psychological benefits. "Having a best friend present during an unpleasant event has an immediate impact on a child’s body and mind,” says study co-author William M. Bukowski, psychology professor and director of the Concordia University Centre for Research in Human Development.

“If a child is alone when he or she gets in trouble with a teacher, we see a measurable increase in cortisol levels (hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress) and decrease in feelings of self-worth,” says Bukowski. “Excessive secretion of cortisol can lead to significant physiological changes, including immune suppression and decreased bone formation. Increased stress can really slow down a child’s development,” adds Bukowski, the journal Developmental Psychology reports. A total of 55 boys and 48 girls from grades five and six in local Montreal schools took part in the study. They kept journals on their feelings and experiences over the course of four days and submitted to regular saliva tests that monitored cortisol levels. These results have far-reaching implications. “Our physiological and psychological reactions to negative experiences as children impacts us later in life,” explains Bukowski. — IANS

Men take the plunge

In a surprising challenge to age-old stereotypes, researchers have discovered that it is the man, not the woman, who is most likely to be the first to say ‘I love you’ in a blossoming romance. Scientists conducting the research have found that young men are three times more likely to take this plunge than their girlfriends.

Researchers at the Pennsylvania State University interviewed 171 heterosexual students under 25. 87 per cent said they believed women fell in love first, while three-quarters said they expected women to say ‘I love you’ first.

But when asked about their own experiences, men said it took them a few weeks to realise they had fallen in love, compared with a few months for women.

However, researchers say that men are simply trying to get their partners into bed. “Any strategy serving as the means to a sexual end would be beneficial to men, including declarations of love,” researchers said. Some 64 per cent of men admitted they had said ‘I love you’ first, compared with just 18 per cent of women. “This shows that women tend to be more cautious about love and the expression thereof than is commonly believed. It can be argued that men’s falling in love and exclaiming this love first may be explained as a by-product of men equating love with sexual desire,” said researchers. The study was published in the Journal Of Social Psychology. — ANI

stress buster
Heal through the written word
Renee Singh

Writing is one of the basic principle's, which empowers people. Even as a form of self expression, it is the most powerful tool. In several circumstances, stress builds up within us because we don’t find the right kind of time to express ourselves. It is our conditioning, our socio-cultural background and sometimes our own inhibition that stops us from doing so.

Being a part of the recently concluded Jaipur Literary Festival was a great experience, a true example of creative expression. Most of the author's expressed a keen desire for self expression and how they had managed to free themselves from the average mainstream stresses and become leaders in the field of self expression.

I remember listening to Javed Akhtar reciting poetry wah kya andaaz hei and just listening to him turned out to be a de-stessing experience.

Of course all of us cannot turn into writers but some form of self exploration is always necessary for all of us to de stress and writing contributes greatly as a medium and form of creative expression. Coping with the challenges of life does make it hard, but writing a journal daily helps alleviate a whole lot of stressful problems, makes you move into a new arena of thought and action.

Studies have shown that healing through writing is a great way to emotional and spiritual growth. George Mallory, professor at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has written a book on healing stress through writing and given some great strategies to facilitate those seeking self awareness and self growth through this super path.

Words represent a small fraction of true self expression yet as wisely used, they can lead to a fulfilling experience. The unconscious mind, which governs behaviour uses symbols images and pictures which are also very effective means of expressing oneself.

One great way of using writing as a stress buster is writing some great quotes and putting them up on  the wall across your bed so that the moment you wake up, a positive thought is what you see and your day starts beautifully.

When you can clearly see and organise your thoughts you can see how to better manage them.  Try not letting stress ever get the better of you. Make your day a joyful one. Being in control and having realistic expectations about your day to day challenges is the key to stress management, which is perhaps the most important ingredient to a happy healthy and rewarding life!

Get the best of you by knowing who you are understanding your potential and then making the most of it.

Each one of us is unique in ourselves as individuals and accepting our individuality and uniqueness is our most coveted quality.

So just be yourself and let stress never be a part of your life.

Green space

Growing plants in containers is a great way to beautify your outdoor space and is one of the hottest trends. Container gardening requires less time, space and energy than in-ground planting and is just as much fun.

  • First of all decide what plants work well together, and are best suited for a particular season. The best way to do this is to consult a nursery.
  • Decide the effect you want to create. Opposite colours on the colour wheel, like red and blue will give you a dramatic effect. Monochromatic colours such as various shades of one colour will give a more tranquil effect.
  • The effect you want to create depends largely on the background. For example, the rigid, repetitive pattern of a brick wall can be tiring on the eye. But when blurred by lush masses of foliage and colourful flowers, the lines recede.
  • Now pay attention to the size and structure of the plants. Having at least one tall plant, one trailing plant and one filler plant in a container will create the right look.
  • Be innovative in choosing your containers to create the drama. It can be anything from an old metal bucket, a terracotta or hand painted pots, old shoes, baskets, discarded tyres etc. As long as you make a hole at the bottom for drainage, you can plant in almost anything. Remember to balance the size of the plants with the container.
  • The right placement of these containers is what will bring out the real beauty of your outdoor space. A triangle always works best if you are unsure about their placement. In this you have one dominant plant flanked by components of smaller structure.
  • The opposite of having nothing to look at is to have too much to look at. Make sure you create a focal point and create coherence in mixed plantings.

You must unify the landscape by spreading colour evenly all around.

Master Chef
Wow them with waffles!
Kandla Nijhowne

I really am a little kid at heart. Show me a crisp, freshly baked, golden hued waffle, topped with bright bits of fruit and a trickle of syrup and I could devour it greedily! Electric waffle irons, as they are called, are easy to come by in our stores. In winter we relish all foods warm and comforting. Nothing fits the bill better than waffles laced with melted butter, chocolate sauce or honey. Fresh seasonal fruit makes things even better. So, go on then. Wow them all with wonderful waffles.

Waffles with strawberries and cream

  • 2 cups maida
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 5 tbsp melted butter
  • Chopped strawberries
  • Cream or ice-cream to serve

Method

Sieve together the dry ingredients. Combine the beaten egg yolks, milk and butter. Add to dry ingredients, beating until smooth. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour a ladle full of the batter into each section of a hot waffle iron.

Cook waffles until crispy and browned. Transfer to serving dish and top with sliced strawberries. Serve accompanied with cream or ice-cream. You can play around and use bottled strawberry crush as a sauce, and replace the berries with sliced bananas. Haven't acquired a waffle iron yet? Use this batter to make gorgeous, crispy pancakes instead!

Several feathers in the cap
After the success of Shor In The City, Nikhil Dwivedi has donned the avataar of a don for his next flick, Tamanchey

New role: A still from Tamanche Nikhil Dwivedi has donned a new avatar. For his next under production film Tamanchey, he has almost doubled up as an Executive Producer, helping out the first time producer Suryaveer Singh. Since the director of the film is also a first timer, Nikhil has been personally involved in assembling a worthy technical crew and specialists for the film.

So much so that many corporate honchos are now taking note and talking of how Tamanchey is being shot with precise planning and looking like an A-List film despite a modest budget. Tamanchey also boasts of a visual director from Hollywood. A visual director is a principal technician in Hollywood films but it will perhaps be the first time that such a technician has been appointed for a Hindi Feature film.

In addition to the camera crew, which is from Hollywood as well, the film has a song director who is leaving no stone un-turned to make the songs look visually appealing.

Sources say in Tamanchey, which is an intense love-story set against the backdrop of crime, Nikhil Dwivedi (who after the success of Shor in the City is suddenly back in the solo lead bracket), plays a character loosely inspired from the Underworld Don Abu Salem, though the producer vehemently denies any such inspiration or association. — HRM

Missing out on the Oscars?

Skipping stones: Johnny Depp Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp is planning to snub this year’s Oscars over rumours of his relationship problems. The Pirates of the Caribbean star is expected to present an award at the ceremony but feels his appearance will only put his personal life with partner Vanessa Paradis under more scrutiny, reported a website.

“If he turns up with Vanessa it just looks like they are trying to make a point of being seen together while if Johnny goes on his own it furthers the rumors. Johnny is now unlikely to go to the Oscars at all,” a source said. Reports earlier this month claimed Depp and Paradis have been living separately and are parting ways after being together for 14 years.

“Johnny isn’t handling anything well right now. People around him are worried about how Johnny is doing because he and Vanessa seem so fractured right now. Their relationship is heading towards the end. Johnny has started reaching out to lawyers, probably to quietly discuss how to get out of the relationship. They’re not married but they’ve been together for years and have kids together so it isn’t as easy as just breaking up,” the source added. — PTI

Johar asked Kareena “How do you feel when you see Saif in an intimate scene with another hot actress? Say in Race 2, Saif has a bare-body scene with Deepika in bikini, what would be your first thought?” To which, Kareena replied, “I’d be like ‘Wow! How hot Saif looks,” and added, “I know how he looks bare bodied!”

On a serious note, she said, “I am quite secure in my relationship with Saif and though I don’t want to say too much too soon, I am quite content!”

Recently Saif admitted how he thinks Kareena looks best only with him, and not with any of the other Khans of Bollywood that she has worked with. — IANS

Gary Oldman Hollywood actor Gary Oldman doubts even an Oscar win will surpass his biggest claim to fame, the Call of Duty video game series. The 53-year-old, who has been nominated in Best Actor category for his film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, said he gets more recognition for his voice acting role on the game series than he does for any of his movies, reported a website.

Actress Vanessa Hudgens says she is very boring. The 23-year-old believes she has not been lured by the dark side of Hollywood thanks to her love of being dull.

If your birthday is January 30...

In the evening, you may dine out at an expensive restaurant in the company of your family.

Remain optimistic in the relationships, which matter to you. Life doesn't always run smooth and this may be one of those small bumps in the road. Make the most of the situation.  Idle chit-chat may open new avenues for consideration when it comes to your creative expression and talent outlets. Young people can offer you new inspirations. Why not take a short pleasure trip now?  Put a little romance in your life and spend quality time with a special someone. A little imagination will go a long way and produce the desired results when it comes to a creative project.

June to September will be a stagnant phase where not much news is on the cards. Do not let this get you down as things will soon go smoothly once more. You'll have to take important decisions for your future. You partner will set ultimatums but you'll try to escape. You must learn how to wait without accelerating time. It is not the right moment to act. You must wait patiently for events to occur until the exact moment for acting has come. Your wait will be useful for relaxation and collecting together your strength. Your self-assurance gets a boost in your business when you succeed in clinching a prestigious deal, or set out on a travel plan which had earlier seemed impossible. It will be wiser to work independently in your present business. You may experience some annoying moments caused by imprudence. By keeping calm you'll be able to solve everything quickly and without any consequences. Those born in the first decade will be satisfied at the way their career is going although will have to face yet another difficult time. Married women desirous of progeny are likely to conceive. Those already in an advanced stage of pregnancy are advised to seek constant medical advice to avoid any complications at the time of child's delivery.
