Fate of 1,078 candidates to be sealed; counting on March 6
Chandigarh, January 29
As many as 1,76,83,562 voters will seal the fate of 1,078 candidates, including two chief ministerial aspirants - Parkash Singh Badal of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance and Capt Amarinder Singh of the Congress - in the fray as Punjab goes to the polls amid tight security tomorrow.

Ministry takes on Army Chief on age controversy
Orders AG to correct DoB in records
New Delhi, January 29
With less than five days to go for the Supreme Court to hear a petition filed by Army Chief General VK Singh seeking reconciliation of his date of birth, it has now emerged that the Ministry of Defence, last week, directed the Adjutant-General branch, the record-keeper of the Army, to maintain the General’s date of birth (DoB) as May 10, 1950.

If the Government believed that the issue regarding the date of birth of General Vijay Kumar Singh had been settled once he had been appointed as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on 31 March 2010 it would soon be mistaken. Singh would bring it up again raising serious questions about propriety apart from misuse of office.

Oil may hit $150 a barrel on Iran ban
Tehran, January 29
Oil prices could rise as high as $150 a barrel because of the European Union ban on imports of Iranian crude, the country's deputy oil minister was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency on Sunday. "Although a precise prediction cannot be made on oil prices, it seems we will witness a $120 to $150 oil price per barrel in future," said Deputy Oil Ministry Ahmad Qalebani.

Antrix-Devas deal
Govt ready to hear scientists’ views
New Delhi, January 29
The Government today said it is ready to hear the points of view of four scientists, including former ISRO chief Madhavan Nair, who have been barred from occupying any government posts in connection with the controversial Antrix-Devas deal. "We are ready to hear their points of view. Let them give their views", Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy said. Asked whether there was any move to revoke the decision, he said, "How can I say that now.
