Police inefficiency to the fore

Putting a question mark over the efficiency and security of the Chandigarh Police during the Republic Day function, Shamsher Singh Brar of Sector 70, Mohali, broke through three nakas and reached close to the entrance of the Parade Ground here during the function.

Biomedical waste lying in open at GMCH-32
Chandigarh, January 27
In gross violation of rules, 900 kg of bio medical waste (BMW), including used syringes, blood-stained cotton gauzes and bandages, packed in plastic disposable bags, is lying in the open in the compound of the UT administration’s flagship hospital, GMCH-32.

Tension gripped Amb Sahib Colony, near Jagatpura, when an unruly mob pelted a flying squad team of the election wing that had gone to raid a place with stones, resulting in minor injuries to officials. Soon after the team, led by Duty Magistrate Devinder Singh, seized a sack containing bottles of liquor, the unruly mob attacked them and broke window panes of their vehicle.

With just a day left for the canvassing to end for the polling, candidates of different parties have roped in personalities from different fields, ranging from politics to Bollywood, to consolidate their vote banks in the Mohali Assembly constituency.

Mohali/Zirakpur, January 27
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal addresses a rally in Mohali on Friday. The Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has claimed that surveys of various areas carried out in the past 10 days have indicated that voters were preferring development to other non-existing issues raised by the Congress. Allaying the apprehension of him taking over as Chief Minister, he said Parkash Singh Badal was the chief ministerial candidate.

Came to catch up, they went disappointed
Chandigarh, January 27
Diwan Singh Nagpal (90), a 1937-batch matriculate from Panjab University (PU), was the star at PU’s second alumni meet on the campus today. Born in 1921, Nagpal was among one of the oldest alumni who attended the meet. He did his graduation from PU in 1953, when the university was located at Solan in Himachal Pradesh. He then did his MA in economics from PU in 1956.

14 ITBP personnel get Police Medal

Admn ‘apathy’ forces doctor to quit job
Panchkula, January 27
Dejected over the apathetic attitude of the district administration, a doctor with the SDM office here has quit her job of issuing medical fitness certificates to applicants for driving licence. Dr Amita Madan, who had been deputed at the office by the Red Cross for the purpose, submitted her resignation to the authorities on January 25. Haryana police contingent declared best

Girls perform Haryanvi dance at the Republic Day function in Panchkula on Thursday. The contingent of the Haryana police was adjudged the best while the woman wing bagged the second prize at the Republic Day parade here yesterday. The Haryana Education Minister, Geeta Bhukkal, was the chief guest. Similarly, the contingent of Bhavan Vidylyan and girl cadets of the NCC were adjudged first and second, respectively, in the junior wing.

Poll shadow on function
Mohali, January 27
The Assembly elections in Punjab caste their shadow on the Republic Day function as the tableaux, depicting development works by different departments, were not taken out during the function here. Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, was the chief guest.

Citation for 9 MC staffers

The municipal corporation honoured families of 18 freedom fighters during the Republic Day function at the MC building here yesterday. Mayor Raj Bala Malik honoured the families. Nine MC employees got commendation certificates.

Gang of looters busted
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 27
The district police has claimed to have busted a high-profile gang of looters involved in a number of incidents of looting of petrol pump and vehicle snatching in 12 districts of the state with the arrest of four of its members. The police has recovered 7 pistols along with cartridges, one Honda City, one Swift and an Inova belonging to Gujranwala jewellers of Jalandhar, seals meant for changing engine and chassis numbers of stolen vehicles, etc.

Three convicted of attacking Ranjit Bajaj
Chandigarh, January 27
A local court here today convicted three persons in connection with the attack on Ranjit Bajaj, son of a senior Punjab IAS couple, in an over-11-year-old case. The court convicted Ranvir Singh of Ludhiana, Jagatinder Singh of Udham Singh Nagar and Makhan Singh of Sector 21 here. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on January 30.

Accounts officer commits suicide
Chandigarh, January 27
An accounts officer with the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts, Western Command, committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the building at Sector 9 here this evening.

Three arrested with opium
Panchkula, January 27
The district police today claimed to have arrest three opium smugglers along with 13 kg of opium here. The three suspects have been identified as Harvinder Singh, Parveen Kumar and Jora Singh, all hailing from to Firozepur district in Punjab.

Head constable suspended for graft

Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Chaudahry has suspended a head constable for taking a bribe of Rs 100 from a driver of Tata Canter here today.

Rape attempt on five-year-old by retired policeman
Chandigarh, January 27
A retired Punjab Police official was booked for attempting to rape a five-year-old girl at Mani Majra town here today. The family of the victim reported to the police that Malkit Singh attempted to rape her when she was returning with another girl from a tuition class.

Two booked for forgery
Chandigarh, January 27
A case of forgery has been registered against two persons for availing themselves of scholarship under a scheme of the Ministry of Minority Affairs. The police had received a complaint from SK Gill, additional director (administration), social justice and empowerment, Haryana.
