Rise of the STUDIO
For most part of the day, his phone is out of reach or switched off. If you are able to get through the number, you will be greeted by a hoarse voice, "Sorry, Honey is in the recording studio." Five hours later, the same voice greets you with the same message, "He is still in the recording studio."
What! Is he virtually living in the recording studio? The answer is yes; as the city houses some of the best, state-of-the-art studios where artists, whether from the film fraternity or music world, like to spend hours behind hi-tech gadgets. For a change after every movie shoot or a song, the crew needn't worry about getting their tickets booked for Mumbai and start searching for expensive recording studios. We check out the latest at various recording studios and check out why the artists willingly bury themselves in them! Saraswati Studio in Sector-17, created nine years back, caters to the needs of film, music and television industry. From dubbing, background score, live recording, voice over, the studio provides all kinds of facilities. Punjabi rapper and singer Honey Singh of Panga fame or Harbhajan Mann doing voice over for the movie Yaara Dildaara, Saraswati Studio is a hang-out joint for many artists. Atul Kapoor, director of the place, shares, "A good amount of work has moved out to Punjab from Mumbai in terms of recording. If only the studios are professional and offer latest equipment, we can get more work here." Atul updates the recording equipment in his studio regularly. "This is an old studio and we update our equipment regularly. We have had filmmakers recording music, doing voice-over; recording live music for Bhojpuri, Punjabi and devotional albums," adds Atul, who is planning to open another studio for background music very soon. If you knew that music composer AR Rahman spends twenty-two hours in a day at his recording studio and the famous Kolavari Di was cracked in matter of hours in a recording studio, you know why the place called recording studios is sacred! Digital recordings with all styles of music at any level of development; recording, mixing an album, best studio engineers…if a recording studio has all this, it is sure to pull artists. Navaniat Singh records for his upcoming venture Taur Mitran Di at Cheema Studio, Sector 35, which is a place with all hi-end equipment for recording. JS Cheema, owner, who was the pioneer in dialogue dubbing for the region, now caters to films in a big way. "We do music, film and dialogue-dubbing for films. We have state-of-the-art facility for surround mixing and film re-recording. In addition, we also do sound effects and background score for films." Despite all this, Mumbai tops the chart when it comes to post-production work. "It will take some time for filmmakers to realise that Chandigarh too can cater to their needs. Besides, most feature film-makers choose to get editing done from their favourite editors in Mumbai, but as I said it will take some time till they stick to Chandigarh," he says. As for singers like Jasbir Jassi, who is now venturing into films, "Chandigarh will take sometime to fall into line with the set-up that Mumbai has. We have good recording and dubbing studios here; all the same, we still require a hi-end set up, facilities and professionals who can pull in clients from the industry."

Not short of success
If you follow your craft with utmost passion, there’s no stopping... Devinder Paul Singh always wanted to be a film-maker. An engineering degree, followed by another in management to a job in McGill University, Montreal, Devinder realised his dream only last May. Bestowed with beginner’s luck, his very first film Take Out gained entry into the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2011. A short film that touches multiculturalism was part of Cannes in Short Film corner. In Chandigarh, Devinder (his parents live in Mohali) shares excerpts from his journey. Brought up in the hill town of Dharamshala, Devinder like many Himachali students came to Chandigarh to pursue further education. After a degree in engineering, he moved to Montreal to pursue MBA from McHill University after some work experience in Delhi. “Delhi kind of prepared me for a big city like Montreal,” he says. Job followed, even as Devinder pursued his dream to make a film. “I guess the roots of the film can be traced back to my childhood. My mother tells me that when I was young I would often run up to foreigners (quite a ubiquitous entity in the picturesque hill town) and ask them two regular questions — one about their nationality, another about currency,” says Devinder as he sips the sugary, milky coffee which he particularly likes. “Don’t get this very often in Montreal,” he quips. People from different nationalities come together in his 11-minute film that draws inspiration from his present city of residence. “Montreal is a city with lots of restaurants. People often eat out and so do I. People’s conversations often fascinated me. I started with a belief that they were trivial, only to realise that these ‘brief moments’ can change relationships, change perceptions,” he says. Before finalising the story, Devinder attended various film-making workshops and courses over the last few years to learn the nuances of filmmaking. When finally he came up with the plan, all those film-maker friends, whom he had lent a helping hand, came to his rescue. Result: Take Out, a film that deals with human relationships, which has a strong Indian connection! What made your very first film get to such a prestigious platform? “Guess Butterfly Effect... there was this thought, a well-meaning one, and, it produced results.” With technology bringing film-making into the common man’s domain, the competition has become fierce, feels Devinder. “Today everyone can and is making films, not necessarily all are making good films. Though Montreal is great place for independent movie-making, I want to move to the Mecca — Los Angeles,” says Devinder with his fingers crossed. He is already over the pre-production of another short film, not a slice of life Take Out but a psychological thriller. He is also in the process of writing a feature film, not a Bollywood movie but a mainstream Hollywood flick. “There was a time when I wanted to do commercial Indian cinema, but that has changed. The wider experiences have left me hankering for the kind of cinema that Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder and Coen Brother make.” “It’s even more important for creative people to cross boundaries, interact with others to make ‘emotionally satisfying’ and ‘intellectually stimulating’ cinema,” says Devinder. mona@tribunemail.com |
Baddies are back
With Sanjay Dutt’s menacing looks and blood curdling laughter all over the place, it seems dreadful villains have struck again big time in Bollywood. Kitne Aadmi Thay, Prem, Prem Naam Hai Mera, Prem Chopra, Mogambo Khush Hua, Saara Shehar Mujhe Lion Ke Naam Se Jaanta Hai — all these dialogues coming from bad men of Bollywood are etched in cinematic history and still send shivers down the audiences spin.
The iconic character of dacoit Gabbar Singh in Sholay played by Amjad Khan is something one can never forget and so were his famous dialogues like —Kitne Aadmi Thay, Ab Tera Kya Hoga Kaalia, and Are O Sambha. Another lovable baddie was Amrish Puri. He terrorised everyone with his deadly appearance, loud voice and his unique baritone when he said Mogambo Khush Hua. Ajit as Lion, a suave-sophisticated villain with his individual style and memorable catch-phrases like Mona Darling, Mona Loot Lo Sona, Lili Don’t Be Silly went on to become a rage. Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Shakaal scored high on cruelty. Even Anupam Kher as Dr Dang in Karma was oozing with negative energy. Other all time famous villains of Bollywood include Prem Chopra, Pran, Danny Denzongpa, and Gulshan Grover, who often got the best lines and looks, overpowering the movie hero. The celluloid then saw a dull period for a while when baddies did not make much of an impact. But the lull seems to have come to an end as we see the spooky Sanjay Dutt in the promos of Agneepath remake, produced by Karan Johar. The deadly Dutt is proof enough of strong villains making a comeback on screen. Even perfectionist Aamir Khan, who shied away from playing negative roles will don the dark cloak of a villain in Dhoom 3. And Vivek Oberoi is set to be the super-villian in Krrish 3. “The quintessential format of Hindi cinema has made its entry again where there is a villain, a hero, a heroine...and who better than Sanjay Dutt to flag off the thing of a villain,” Johar had said. —

Woman power
Men suffer from temporary stupidity when around a woman - or even at mentioning her name, suggest scientists. A study at the Radboud University Nijmegen, in the Netherlands found that the mere mention of a woman’s name could temporarily affect a man’s brainpower.
It revealed that even the presence of a female name on an instant message or text was enough to have an impact. The researchers lead by psychologist Johan Karremans and lead study author Sanne Nauts performed a series of cognitive tests on a group of up to 90 young, heterosexual men and women, according to Miller-McCune magazine. They included the simple Stroop test, which is commonly used in neuropsychological evaluations, and a lip-reading task that required them to read short words out loud in front of a webcam. In both instances, the researchers recorded changes when male participants were told that they were being observed by a woman. The experiments showed that women weren’t affected in any way by who they believed they were interacting with. “Casually mentioning a female instead of a male name was sufficient to impair men’s cognitive performance,” the team explained in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. They added that participants did not even need to know what the woman in question looked like to be affected. “These effects occur even if men do not get information about the woman’s attractiveness,” they added. The research supports findings from a 2009 study by Dr Karremans, which came to the conclusion that men suffered from temporary stupidity after interacting with women. Researchers could not explain why male reactions were so different from female ones in the study, though one theory they suggest is that the time men notoriously spend thinking about sex colours their response to sexually neutral situations. While women believe that they need only look pretty to score a date, they suggested, men rely on character, charm and wit and therefore their behaviour in social situations fluctuates more aggressively. —

Hot in cold
First we were touchy that the winter was late and now we are grumpy that it is severe! Anyway, that’s human nature, but with the winter in full swing and the mercury dropping every day, staying warm and looking stylish is a challenge.
Though puffa jackets, scarves, gloves, big woolly jumpers don’t sound like a recipe for a fashion statement, but these are the wardrobe essentials that will help you sail through the cold and also look chic. “Layering creatively is one good option in the winter,” says designer Sabah Khan. She adds, “Layering has been in fashion for quite some time and it allows you to put together varied looks and keep you comfortable as the weather changes. Another way that you can look hot and stay warm is to dress up in a puffa jacket with patterned jeans and over-the-knee boots. Glittering jewels and white colour outfits too are a perfect match for the winter.” Well, you can go tonal and accessorise with a dash of colour for the trendy look. And if you are the type who likes to experiment then go for a white winter. Wear white and you surely will be noticed. “Fur is the hottest trend this winter, so get it right by wearing a fur jacket and polo neck tunic combo,” Says Ritu Kochar, corporate director, INIFD. She adds, “Old school glamour can also add to your look and this can be done by wearing a boxy fur jacket and fuzzy hat.” Remember hats are a hot trend this year! For the women who love their Indian attires take some tips from Jean Paul Gaultier and indianise it by tying a silk scarf under your woollen kurti. “Blanket coats and fringed jackets make winter better. Just make sure you have a fitted silhouette, Though fur is an undeniable fashion statement, this season you can go for a furry or angora jumper but don’t forget to add some statement earrings.” says Neha Sidhu from Voila. Rag and knits are another way to give the fashionable touch to your dressing and this will also add a hint of texture to your dress. Oversized mannish coat or jackets can also create a dramatic silhouette and team it up with leggings for a stylish look. And since leggings are not very expensive you can have them in different colours and stay cozy even in your shorter hemlines!

weight watch
Most people typically have problems managing their hunger, during the cold winter months and struggle with weight gain. Many of us spend the summer trying to shed the pounds, only to undo all this hard work during the winter.
Studies indicate that we do tend to eat more during the winter months, with the average person gaining at least one to two pounds – and those who are already overweight likely to gain a lot more. Our appetite seems to change when the days grow shorter. Some researchers say it is our primitive impulses promoting us to hoard calories for the winter ahead. Also, the shorter days and poor weather affect our motivation to keep active, as well as posing physical barriers to our outdoor fitness routines. However, we need to include exercises in spite of the chills. Being more aware of our food and activity habits can help to prevent winter weight gain. Here are a few tips how to control of your winter appetite— Snack right The colder the temperature, the more you need to snack. But if you make it a high protein, high fibre snack, you’ll rev up your body’s heat mechanism quickly and remain warmer longer. Exercise daily If you cannot venture outside to do your regular workouts – or even if the weather keeps you from getting to the gym – put more activity into your daily living. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, march in place while you’re sorting the laundry or doing the dishes, or clean out the closet/basement/garage instead of curling up with your favourite television show every night. The more you move, the warmer you will feel and the less hungry you will be. Monitor yourself Self-monitoring is the key to successful weight control. By checking your weight weekly and keeping a daily food diary, you will be less likely to lapse into unhealthy habits. Just recording your food intake alone will help you to make healthier choice. Have water Water is imperative for good health but is the most neglected nutrient in the winter. The cold dry air dehydrates the body, so therefore it is very important to drink water at regular intervals throughout the day. Water is a natural appetite suppressant and rids us of bloating by flushing out sodium and toxins. Eat without distractions Eating foods without the TV turned on, without the computer in front, is a good strategy to be aware of what we are eating. Mindless eating while distracted by another activity will often lead to eating more than you realise. Drink soup Vegetable/chicken broths are awesome to taste and very easy to prepare. The key is to drink enough so that you almost start filling full and then proceed for the main course dishes. Indulge with full awareness Give in to your cravings occasionally and if you decide to indulge, do so consciously. Plan your treat and savour each bite. Never deprive yourself of your favourite food because if you do, you are more likely to binge when motivation is low or stress is high.

Growth theory
Satish narula In the field, any plant out of place is called a weed. I apply the same term for a tree, shrub or a climber when it is not planted keeping in view its requirements and suitability. As a result of wrong planting or the methods employed later to rectify the fault, the plant may show poor growth or even die. The mistake may be made at any level whether it is the case of roadside planting, planting in the orchards, in farm houses, housing societies, public places or parks or even in home gardens. Let us examine the case of wrong type of planting on the roadside. Normally we see only the plant and the place where it is being planted forgetting about its potential spread in times to come and how it is likely to interfere with existing infrastructure like electrical or telephone wires. Due to this neglect at the time of planting, the tree when grows to its full spread and height, starts interfering with the overhead wires and has to be clipped spoiling its growth pattern and beauty besides exposing it to various pest attacks due to wrong method of pruning. It is not uncommon for some plants to die after planting but it is criminal to replace the dead plant with whatever is available in the nursery. This not only spoils the avenue but at times the insects or diseases attacking a particular species also find refuge in other nearby species. The dead plant in a row should always be replaced with the plant of the same species. A proper distance between plants should always be given depending upon their nature of growth and spread. The saplings planted at wrong distances, especially when planted too close start pushing each other for want of light and space. The bigger and fast-growing species ‘overpower’ and the ‘victim’ plants may bend un-naturally to the extent of proving a threat to life and property. (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist) |

Three cheers to women!
The song Aunty Ji from the movie Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a fun track and has a vibrant feel. It has a retro party beat. It is composed by Amit Trivedi and sung by Ash King who sang two beautiful romantic songs, Te Amo and I Love You. Ash King’s sweet voice praises all the beautiful women in the world in an adorable way. Cute tune It is a cute song and I love to dedicate this song to my mother. I love the way Kareena and Imran dance and enjoy themselves in the song. Sanjana Rawat, student, MCM DAV College Flirty lyrics The lyrics are flirty and funny at the same time. It is a good dance number and the video is also quite different from the usual songs. I like the song a lot because it is so full of fun. Manveen Shahi, owner, Gifts and Glitters All for women It is a fresh idea and a peppy song. The most amazing part of the song is that it reassures all the middle-aged women that they are still attractive. But it is fun to play the song for young girls as well. Double games
Sajid Nadiadwala wants to make a franchise out of the Judwaa movies. Saif Ali Khan might be in one of them. There will be a different actor, theme and director for each of the Judwaa films.
Sajid Nadiadwala says, “Yes, we are making the Judwaa films a franchise. Saif will be part of Judwaa 2 and then we will have different actors and directors for Judwaa 3 and other films.” A source close to him explains, “Sajid has already spoken to top actors like Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, and others to play the double role in sequels that are also independent films with fresh directors. The franchise took time to take off because he couldn’t decide on a concept that satisfied him. Initially, David Dhawan was supposed to direct. Salman Khan has no problem with Sajid Nadiadwala taking this movie to other actors. He gave him the green light so Sajid is happy. It can also be said that none of the Judwaa films will star Shah Rukh Khan because everybody knows of the equation between Salman and SRK and Sajid wouldn’t want to hurt him.” Judwaa 2 is among the most expensive films to go on the floors in 2012. It will be directed by Sajid Khan and star Saif Ali Khan. Prosthetics have been flown down from the US for Saif and they have to be tried on by February. Then the film will go ahead. But the nature of her role was kept under wraps so far. Leone is upbeat about bagging the lead role. "Hey everyone! So excited to be working on Jism 2. Remember to follow @jism2 to get all the movie news first," Sunny, whose real name is Karen Malhotra, tweeted. While Sunny plays the female lead, the film will have two male protagonists and Bhatt's actress-turned-filmmaker daughter Pooja, the producer of Jism 2 is in a dilemma over whom to sign. Rumours have been afloat for a while now that she was being considered for the role.

Readying for an item song
Vidya Balan is loving her new found glamourous and hot image, thanks to her siren act in The Dirty Picture. She is losing weight to do an item song.
Her first item song is in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Ferrari Ki Sawari. A source informs us that this song has to be a notch above The Dirty Picture. Vidya has become more confident of her looks and sex appeal. So she is trying ten different looks before finalising it. She also wants to hear the song before she shoots for it. Inputs will also be given by the director and the stylist. The song may have a few different looks. A while ago, she would have done anything but today she has the freedom to choose and decide. The source adds, “Vidya gained 10-12 kilos for The Dirty Picture and now she is losing it. She is working very hard because losing weight doesn’t come easily to her. She wants to look slim and shapely for her debut item song. She already did the fat or South Indian bombshell act in The Dirty Picture so this has to be different and a little Westernised.” Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, and Rajesh Mapsukar showed her clips of the movie and then she agreed to do the song because she liked it all. They are all working together to make the item song different from what is already out in the market. The song will be used as a promotional tool for the Sharman Joshi movie.

Luck by chance
Newbie Mitali Nag aka Krishna of Zee TV's new show Afsar Bitiya is smiling these days as her show has caught the fancy of the audiences and is already climbing the TRP ladder. Here’s a chat with the Nagpur girl.
How did Afsar Bitiya happen to you? The casting director of the show saw me in a short film and got in touch with me. As I was busy in Nagpur, I shot an audition video and sent it to the producers and things took off. It must feel good that despite tough competition from Star Plus’ Saath Nibhana Saathiya airing at the same time, Afsar Bitiya has got good numbers? Yes, I am glad that our show is working and the audiences like the content. In terms of TRP, there is a competition; but, I feel that we both have different target audiences as we have a different storyline. What qualities do you like in Krishna? She is a simple girl who is very confident and never gives up. I have the same qualities. How has it been working with Zee TV? It has been great. Not just the channel, also it has been great working with the entire unit of Afsar Bitiya. There is no hierarchy. If I have any problem, I can approach producers, director or anyone. The environment is very professional. Which is the most difficult scene you have shot? So far there have been two sequences that I found very difficult. One was when Krishna went for an interview. She was nervous and I had to feel it. I always try to get the feel of my character. It helps an actor to connect with the audience. Other was the emotionally draining sequence where she is preparing for exams and her books get stolen. A boy from the society steals them and runs away. She had to run and chase him. It was very tough. — HRM
