The procession of Rajni Rawat, Indendendent, was the biggest. The crowd quite conspicuously comprised hired labourers. Many also spilled the beans about this fact. Rawat was bitter in her tone before the media where she blamed Vijay Bahuguna, Member of Parliament, Congress, for having deceived her in the last Assembly elections.

“Vijay Bahuguna made me his sister by making me tie rakhi on his wrist and promised me the ticket from

Congress in the year 2009, but when the time came, somebody else was given the ticket.” She said she would teach Bahuguna a lesson in this Assembly election, which directly meant that even if she did not win, she would cut into Congress votes by denouncing the party in her campaigns.

Vinod Barthwal, SP president, said the politics was a game of destiny where anybody could click and register a win during the elections. He expressed people’s trust in the SP and said people had put behind the past and were ready to go along with the SP.

Devender Sethi exuded confidence that it was for the first time that Congress had fielded a Sikh candidate and the entire Punjabi community would help in winning this seat to honour the confidence shown by the party.

The traffic in the city became unmanageable with one rally following another rally in the city. Long jams were seen in Garhi Cantt road where Godavari Thapa came with her supporters riding two-wheelers all over the roads. Similar was the situation on other busy roads of the city such as Saharnpur Road, Kanwali Road and Race Course Road.

Cong candidate from Gadarpur
Manish Tiwari attacked
Tribune News Service

Nainital, January 11
Manish Tiwari, nephew of former CM Narayan Dutt Tiwari, who would be the Congress candidate from Gadarpur in the coming Assembly poll, was allegedly attacked by supporters of an aspiring candidate near Maseet village in Gadarpur this afternoon.

It is learnt that the car in which Manish was travelling along with his father RC Tiwari and a couple of supporters was forcibly stopped by a mob. It damaged the vehicle and hurled abuses at those travelling in it. Manish’s father is learnt to have sustained injuries.

ASP, Kashipur, Jagat Ram Joshi, said, “A case against some persons has been registered. We are carrying out raids on some suspects.” Joshi said it was not clear whether the attack was politically motivated or not. The decision of the party high command to field Manish from the Gadarpur seat had enraged Congress workers in the area who wanted Rajinder Pal Singh to be the candidate from the seat. The party men were divided on the grant of ticket from Gadarpur to Manish.

Earlier, the party had announced Manoj Joshi as its candidate from Kashipur, but later gave ticket to Manish. There was a lot of opposition to this. Even Nainital MP KC Singh Baba had opposed the move.

Today, the party decided to shift Manish to Gadarpur, infuriating Rajinder Pal Singh, a ticket aspirant from the segment.

Young fan of Anna, Rahul files papers as Independent
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, January 11
He seems to be a youth inspired by many. On the one hand he feels Anna Hazare is the role model for all countrymen, on the other he is quite impressed with Rahul Gandhi’s emphasis on the youth joining politics.

Meet Kuldeep Kumar, a youth-cum-social activist, who wants to change the ‘dirty’ political scenario in the country, with his first step being to contest for the legislative Assembly from Haridwar rural.

A graduate, Kuldeep, perturbed by corruption and politicians and ministers getting embroiled in numerous scams in the past few years, thought it better to enterthe political arena if one really wants to change this set-up.

“If one closely followed Anna Hazare’s movement, one can see that tens of thousands of youths joined the movement in various parts of the country to pressurise for the Jan Lokpal Bill. If one of them contests from each Assembly segment, then we will have youth politicians who can change the political system in our country; that’s why I am joining politics this time and I hope other such similar minded youths will follow suit,”said Kuldeep.

Joining the political arena officially got delayed for Kuldeep today, as he couldn’t submit his nomination papers owing to “inexperience.” A little dejected, the young candidate termed added that it was a good learning step for him as still there was one day to go for filing nominations.

When Kuldeep arrived for at the district election office, he was the cynosure of all eyes as he arrived on a decorated horse as witnessed in weddings. Another interesting facet was known later when the horse owner revealed that the same horse was booked for a wedding this evening, so was decorated, which the Independent candidate happily accepted to book for an hour for nomination.

“Initially, we thought that a groom is mounted on a horse but when he moved towards the main gate, we enquired about his identity and then we came to know that he is not a groom but an Independent candidate,”said a cop posted near Roshanabad district election office gate.
