Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 7
Next time you visit Sector 17 and somebody approaches you offering sunglasses at throwaway prices, don’t purchase one, as it might be fake. Based on the trend of vendors selling fake Ray Ban sunglasses, the opticians operating in Sector 17 had made a complaint to the company in Delhi under which the company officials conducted a raid on Friday at the basement of a SCO and recovered around 10,000 fake sunglasses.

People visiting Sector 17 were duped by some vendors selling fake sunglasses at cheaper rates claiming that they had been procured from the customs department and were being sold at minimum rates.

Rajinder Manocha, owner of Big Ben Opticals in Sector 17, made a complaint to the company that a market of fake Ray Ban glasses was flourishing in the city.

Following which the company initiated an inquiry and found that fake sunglasses were being sold in the city. “Many people have been duped by the vendors selling fake sunglasses.

The customers used to come to our shop to confirm whether the sunglasses were original or fake which was tarnishing the image of the company, so we had reported the matter to the company”, Manocha said.

Advocate SK Bansal, lawyer for Ray Ban in Delhi, said that they sought permission from the Delhi court to raid the premises in Sector 17 (C) from where the fake sunglasses were supplied to various retailers in the city as well as Punjab.

“Apart from fake sunglasses, the stickers and logos of Ray Ban and covers of sunglasses were recovered from the premises”, Bansal said.

Des Raj, ASP, Chandigarh Police, said that the representatives of the company had approached him with the raid orders issued by the Delhi court.

The security was provided to them to raid the premises.

Chandigarh, January 7
Several sportspersons participating in the 57th National School Games today had a taste of the ‘state of the art’ facilities being provided by the UT Education Department when the sudden downpour drenched their tents, pitched to provide area for bathing.

The players had no alternative but to bathe in the biting cold with no one from the organising committee coming to their rescue. The cooking process was also hampered as the tents became wet.

Sportspersons staying at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22(GMSSS 22), were made to bathe in the wet tent. The hosts that boast of giving proper facilities, including bedding and hot water, failed to provide a proper bathing place for the visiting sides.

An on-the-spot visit by the correspondent revealed that players were bathing in the ‘open’ and notably the place meant for drinking water for the school children had been turned into a ‘bathroom’ by putting up a tent there.

“The organisers have made proper arrangements but they failed to provide a clean area. The players wake up early and have to bathe in the open. No doubt they are providing hot water but it is of no use as they are bathing in the open. The climate here is very different and this is adding to our worries” said a coach, accompanying a team from south.

On the other hand, teams staying at the Girls Government High School, Sector 23, were also facing similar problems and they also shifted their portable kitchen from tent to the corridor of the school.

“We have brought our own cook and were provided a tent to cook our food. After the rain we are left with no other option but to shift our base inside the gallery. The officials have provided the facility but somehow this system has failed. Hope the weather will improve soon so that we can make our food in the clean area” said a district sports officer associated with a team.

Isn’t it enough that you are getting hot water in a government school. — A senior official, GMSSS 22

What are you talking? It is really shocking and should not happen. We will check the situation and take necessary steps. All teams are our guests and we will try to provide them with best facilities. — VK Singh, finance-cum- sports secretary, UT, and patron of the games

Instead of solving the problem, Sandeep Hans, DPI (Schools), was more interested in knowing the names of officials and participants who had narrated their woes. He said that they had all arrangements for the players.
