Success tastes sweet
Who hasn’t heard of Yo Yo Honey Singh, the king of rappers, especially if you belong to Punjab where a geri is incomplete without playing his hits like Chaska, Panga and more recent ones like Dop Shop and Brown Rang from the album International Villager? We catch up with the artiste to know more about this happening rapper.
Honey, who started his career as a music producer in 2006, never planned anything. Music just happened to him. He says, “I never wanted to be a rapper. My first rap was for Ashok Masti’s Glassi in English and it got the ETC award for the best sound.” What followed next was Raj Brar’s Chandigarh De Nazaare in 2007. “I loved the response and I enjoyed doing the rap.” It was the time when Daljit Dosanjh approached Honey and his career moved to another level. He says, “The moment Daljit came to me I knew his personality demanded something different and so we decided to name his album The Next Level. Honey believes that ‘anybody can do anything’ and ‘if you want to win the game, change it’. “Because of my belief in myself, I can convince people easily,” quips Honey sipping a Diet Pepsi. As we raise our eyebrows about the ‘Diet’ part, Honey explains, “Nowadays, I’m particular about my diet and workout. I want to have a good on-screen presence, so I have to shed all my excess weight.” Born and brought up in Punjab, Honey is busy shuttling between Chandigarh and Mumbai. “After Panga and Chaska, I started living in the rural parts of Punjab and understood that the youth is trapped in Bahar Jaan Da Phatur and Nasha. Nobody was even aware of the significance of March 23 and hence I came up with Jatt Soorme. I wanted to tell the youth that going abroad is pointless, so serve your motherland.” According to Honey, rap, which originated in Africa, is just another way of expressing oneself. He says, “I compose raps by being observant and I pick up elements from my surroundings. So, my music talks about the reality. Just as singing is poetry combined with composition, rapping is expressing your words with the help of a beat.” How difficult is it for him to switch on to the more mature persona of a music producer after being known so long as the cool dude? “I will always remain thankful to my fans and that is why my name is Yo Yo Honey Singh which means your own.” Honey also happens to act in his upcoming movie Mirza-The Untold Story due for release in April. “I’m playing a grey character and Gippy Grewal is in the main lead. So, acting is yet another thing which I had never planned for.” As for his success the rapper says he believes in team work which is the reason why he has come up with successful collaborations till date. He signs off by saying, “I’m proud to be a Punjabi and I have started from scratch. This is just the beginning.” Way to go, Honey! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

Write choice
Blogging could relieve teenagers from social anxiety, improve their self-esteem and help them relate better to their friends, says a study.
Maintaining a blog has a stronger positive outcome on troubled students’ well-being than merely expressing their social anxieties and concerns in private diaries. “Research has shown that writing... (is) a great way to release emotional distress and just feel better,” said researcher Meyran Boniel-Nissim, University of Haifa, Israel, who led the study. “Teens are online anyway, so blogging enables free expression and easy communication with others,” added Bonie-Nissim. Self-esteem, social anxiety, emotional distress and the number of positive social behaviours improved significantly for the bloggers when compared to teens who did nothing and wrote private diaries. Bloggers who were instructed to write specifically about their difficulties and whose blogs were open to comments improved the most. .—IANS

Priyanka plays Kaali
Priyanka Chopra plays Kaali in Agneepath and she is the female lead in the Karan Malhotra’s film. While the film is male-centric, PC promises that Kaali is the soul of the film.
Privileged role I feel privileged to be part of the remake of Agneepath. I know the film is male-centric and violent but my character Kaali is the soul of the film. She provides the beauty, the soul, the naughtiness, and the happiness in the film. She is Vijay’s strength and there is a lovely romantic track between them. To prepare for the role, I only had to listen to Karan Malhotra because he was very clear about what he wanted from me. I am so glad that he could visualise me in the film as it is something I feel proud to have done. I am all for versatility and this film adds to that. I have worked with Karan Johar and Duggu before so the comfort level was amazing. Kaali versus Sweety I played a Maharashtrian girl named Sweety in Kaminey and this is my second time around. The characters are very different, as are their personalities, and the situations they find themselves in. Karan and I made a conscious effort also to keep things different. Happening 2012 I have so many things happening in 2012. My music album will be out and am thrilled about it. I have Agneepath, then Teri Meri Kahaani with Shahid directed by Kunal Kohli, and Barfee with Ranbir Kapoor. I am also shooting for Krrishh 2. I am grateful to be so very busy.

100 days to Rs 100 crore
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose mega-budget production RA.One has earned more than Rs100 crore, recalls the time when 100 days in the theatre was victory enough for film producers.
“Was discussing with my DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) friend how we wished for a 100 days for our film... rather than Rs.100 crore. Seems our days are truly numbered now!!” tweeted Shah Rukh. The actor’s last release Don 2: The King Is Back is also on its way to register earnings over the Rs 100 crore-mark. After a relaxed holiday in Dubai with his family and friends, it seems Shah Rukh is now getting back into work mode. “The excitement of working on a new script covers up the stress of daily chores. I think I was made to entertain... not be entertained,” he added.

Fashion forward
Sonam Kapoor is stylish, classy, and pretty. And the girl can talk! So one of the leading ladies of Players talks about the film, her co-stars, her look, and her desire to start a fashion line.
On Players This is an Abbas-Mustan masala film and I had a complete blast doing it. There are songs, action, thrills, good-looking people, twists, turns, chases, dancing, great locations, and every other ingredient that would make people want to watch it. The dialogues are filmy. If you are an Abbas-Mustan fan, you will love this movie! My look I told my sister Rhea that I wanted to look sexy, sensational, stylish and naughty with all my clothes on. I think the both of us have done a great job on my look. Clothes are such an important part of our roles and the films we do. This look is different from my mostly simple or classy looks in my earlier films. I have been called sexy and naughty and that is flattering. My character is a tomboy because she hangs out with the boys and does crazy things. Anyway, Bipasha is the sex bomb in the movie. I think being sexy is showing your tummy and cleavage and I haven’t done that. Protective hand This is my second film with him but we aren’t really friends. He is older than me so he is protective of me and we got along well. He is very funny and gets people to open up. I am shy. Fashion line I love fashion and would love to do a fashion line for young girls. Nothing is concrete yet but if I get the funds, I will go ahead. I want to do a high-street line and make it affordable and accessible to young girls and women of all sizes. I think Mango, Zara, French Connection are quite expensive here so I will target that market and make it affordable yet stylish.

Sandra goes simple
Speed star Sandra Bullock says she was forced to shoot scenes in new movie Gravity without make-up.
The 47-year-old actress stars alongside George Clooney in the upcoming sci-fi thriller directed by Alfonso Cuaron that talks about astronauts in a damaged space station. “God help us all when my face comes rushing at you with no make-up on. I’m going to apologise now, but Alfonso, in a brilliant move, said, ‘No make-up.’ “Our vain little heads are going to be some massive 17-foot image. You are going to see details because it’s shot on this digital film that shows everything. It’s so scary. There are scenes where you say, ‘This is where you have to let go...’ And, thank God, there are no nude scenes,” she said. — PTI

Sober is sexy
Singer Demi Lovato thinks that being above the influence of alcohol rather than under the influence is a better way to deal with problems. The 19-year-old, who was previously using alcohol and drugs to “numb the pain” of her emotional issues, says that she has now found more positive ways to cope with her problems. “I think sober is sexy.
It’s cool. I think it’s way cooler to be above the influence than under the influence. I’m not gonna lie. I was self-medicating. I was doing things like drinking and using (drugs), like a lot of teens do to numb their pain,” said Lovato. — IANS

Young, restless & successful
Which is the most lucrative option—staring one’s own venture or climbing the fast-paced corporate ladder? For many the choice is the corporate ladder. But here are a few brave young entrepreneurs who are busy building their own empire.
As one walks into the Girl in the Café, a sense of belongingness sweeps in. The chic young partner Neha Singh is still coming to terms with an overwhelming response to her New Year’s bash. For this Masters in Mass Communication pass out, the café was more of a compromise between either moving out of town or doing something of her own. A fan of authentic Italian and European food, her aim was to bring a bit of raviolis and bruschettas to Chandigarh. From dealing with people and interweaving a bit of Public Relations, Neha is still learning. “You just need to understand that all efforts boil down happy customers,” she says. The experience has only added humility in Neha. “You just need to be true to yourself and everything falls in place,” she says. It’s not everyone can come from an IIT, have a great job up his sleeve and quit it for a rather risky start up. This is Vamsi Krishna’s story. All of 28, this IITian along with his three friends Saurabh Saxsena, Pulkit Jain and Anand Prakash have revolutionised the concept of value addition to education. “After graduating in 2005 and all of us had great jobs, but always knew this was not our calling,” he says. It was in the same year that Lakshya, a coaching institute, was set up with the prime objective of imparting quality education. After opening their first at Patiala, the institute is slowly spreading its wings and ensuring that the quality is not compromised. “Our market research pointed to the lack of good education facilities in Patiala,” he says. Not only spreading education, the focus remains on making learning more effective. “We now have 35 teachers, of which 18 come from IITs to train our students,” the young entrepreneur shares. “I am just keep my fingers crossed for a better future,” he says.
Food was the driving force for Sahil Juneja, owner of Uppercrust. For this 24-year-old, it was not about taking the legacy of Khyber ahead, but making a mark of his own. “I hope one day I can ask dad to stay at home,” he says. After some great experience at ITC Maratha, Mumbai and Ananda in the Himalays, Sahil worked for a catering firm before coming up with the idea of his own a year-and-a-half back. “ My entire salary is devided between my family. Now, I am just waiting to earn as much to ensure I can buy dad a Mercedes,” he smiles. For Manu Bhandari, founder director, The Sky School, it was at the point of handling a cushy investment banking job overseas that he found out about the shortage of smart schools in India. “Being the youngest country in the world, India emerged as a great market,” he says. With inspiration from his mother, who is an academician, Manu left his job to return to India and teamed up with Amit Sihag to give shape to The Sky School. “We had to give great attention to curriculum and the education methods. We havecompleted a great year with positive and constructive feedback,” he says. “I just hope to grow as an entrepreneur and take the school to new heights,” he says. Bhavneet Rehal and Suneet Sidhu, partners of Create a Flutter were constantly in search of high-end stationary. “We could just never find what we wanted and started making our own,” she says. Ready for setting up their boutique, the duo are already setting up in several stationary shops and love it. “Our only mantra is to work well as it helps us sleep better,” she smiles. Hats off to the young and the restless! vasudha@tribunemail.com |

Overcoming stereotypes
Kill Bill star Uma Thurman feels that she has proved the Hollywood wrong by still having a successful career.
The 41-year-old actress, who will be seen seducing 25-year-old Robert Pattinson in the upcoming film Bel Ami, is happy to have done well despite being told otherwise. “There’s a lot of aggressive talk in this business. You turn 18 and they say you won’t have a career at 20. You turn 24 and they say you won’t last till you’re 30. Now it’s like, if I’m so over, why are you talking to me now?,” Thurman told the magazine. The Pulp Fiction star, who has two children, Maya, 13, and nine-year-old Levon with ex-husband Ethan Hawke, is also enjoying a steady love life. “I have something I would really like to express about my love life. I’m happier with it now than I’ve been in many, many years. Yes I’m trying to have as peaceful a personal life as possible.” Thurman is reportedly dating London-based financier Arpad Busson. — PTI

Marriage can wait
…
Actress Vidya Balan says that she believes in the institution of marriage and cannot avoid it for long, but she is not thinking about it right now.
“My career is going good. I am very happy. Emotionally and mentally I am in a very happy space, by god’s grace. I am not thinking about marriage as of now, but I’m sure a right time will come for it also. I believe in the institution of marriage. I will not ignore it for a longer duration, but yeah, for now, I am keeping it aside. I will definitely get married,” said Vidya. The actress is said to be dating CEO of UTV movies Siddharth Roy Kapoor. After the super success of her Dirty Picture, Vidya is promoting her forthcoming film Kahaani, directed by Sujoy Ghosh. She will also be seen in Nikhil Advani’s Chand Bhai opposite Akshaye Khanna. Vidya admits it’s the greed for good roles that keeps her on her toes. “I am a very greedy actor. I want to play different people, I want to do different kinds of films. Even if it means that the hero is the protagonist, as long as I have enough to do in the film I am more than happy doing it,” the 33-year-old actress said during the launch of the first look of her new film Kahaani. “I am very happy with the kind of films being made today and that I am getting a chance to work in them. They are appealing to the audience as well, which is most important. Women-oriented films are being made since years, but it is only today that they are tasting success,” Vidya added while sporting a fake baby bump during the launch. She is not restricting herself to women-oriented films, says the actress who has done films like Parineeta, Ishqiya and Paa. “I have not made any boundaries or limitations for myself. If the film is good, if the role is good I will definitely do it,” she said. — IANS

Weak game
Players revolves around a gang of robbers creating one of the largest traffic jams, giving them time to pull off a theft of gold bullion. They get away in their Mini Coopers, which are small enough to drive on sidewalks so they can make a clean get away before the traffic jam clears. The plan is flawless and the job is executed perfectly. The escape is clean. The only threat, that the mastermind thief never saw coming is a member of his own crew. After pulling off an amazing gold bullion heist, he can’t believe when one of them turns out to be a double-crosser. Sleepy tale It is the desi version of The Italian Job and leaves you yawning with the bad performances of the star cast. Bipasha Basu looks sizzling hot and Sonam should learn at least to act. — Anoop Khanna, BBA student, GGDSD College Race memories The robbing sequence in the movie is amazing, leaving aside the betrayal in love and partner swapping which brings back memories of the movie Race. Overall a poor screenplay, dialogues and bad music. — Donna Singh, housewife Neil, a ray of hope The story is dragged and lacks enthusiasm. Neil Nitin Mukesh’s performance is outstanding but it seems that Abhishek Bachchan’s luck is jinxed because the movie is not worth watching even once. Better luck next time. — Sanha Lal, B.Com student, MCM College (As told to Sabia Talwar) |

Fresh & green
The word Sandosham in Tamil means Joy and this joy has been recreated in the delicious vegetarian South Indian cuisine being served at the newly opened Sandosham outlet at the foodcourt of DLF City Center Mall, Chandigarh.
Other than the authentic tasting dosas, idlis, uttapams, flavored rice the place serves we serve very special combos and platters, which are carefully designed to suit the pocket. Says Navin N Dutta, general manager, Babycorn Specialty Cuisine, “Over the centuries, Tamil food has undergone many changes due to urbanisation, but the Tamil cuisine has retained its basic character in the use of ingredients and also its aroma and flavors have remain unchanged. Pale imitation
Nonika Singh Movie: Players Director: Abbas Mustan Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sonam Kapoor, Sikander Kher, Omi Vaidya, Vinod Khanna. Rating: Slightly above average Comparisons are always unfair. But when a movie is touted as an official remake of the Hollywood blockbuster The Italian Job, comparisons are obvious. However, those of you who expect to see a frame by frame copy of the original, well Abbas Mustan’s directorial venture Players is certainly not a Xerox copy. But before we can say hurrah, the sad part is one wishes it were. For who can forget the nail biting action and thrills of the enthralling heist film where suspension of belief too was credible. In comparison, this one fails on many counts. To begin with the cobbling together of a team comprising of a mastermind, an illusionist, an explosive expert, a makeup artist and computer hacker to steal the gold on its way to Romania from Russia seems exciting enough. But not for too long! The only master flourish of course is in the characterisation of Neil Nitin Mukesh as the Spider. In an author backed role he impresses for sure. Other members of the cast are convincing, if not great. Omi Vaidya (the Chatur of 3 Idiots) in particular proves he was no flash in the pan but an actor who can deliver. Sure enough the movie with fantastic locales set in Russia, Amsterdam and New Zealand has the Hollywood feel not just the Hollywood storyline. The train robbery sequence despite “ifs and buts” is well-executed. But amidst the world of spy cameras, masks, voice generated villas and what not there is typical Bollywood masala. So, lest you forget it’s our very own desi movie, there is Johnny Lever too with his typical humour. Noble sentiments, the staple diet of Indian films, are galore as well. So behind the master robbery lurk philanthropic motives too. Expectedly, there are some tear jerker situations which neither move nor enthuse. But then what is a Hindi movie without dollops of sentimentality? Thus those of us who hope to see a Hollywood movie with Bollywood tadka end up watching a Hindi movie with a Hollywood twist. Twists and turns anyway are far too many. The surprise element which the Abbas Mustan duo is otherwise an expert at springing often becomes a tad too stifling. In the second half the movie picks up pace and action only to once again drag in the anticlimax. Music by Pritam is passable. Though the songs do little to enhance the movie which with better editing could have been the racy high voltage thriller it promised to be. Alas, it climaxes on a flat note at best a one-time watch for die-hard Bollywood aficionados. For the rest watch the original instead anytime, anywhere. |

With the Colors’ reality show Bigg Boss nearing its end, everybody is on a guessing spree about the winner of this controversial show—who will walk away with a crore of rupees as prize money? With five contenders for the title—Amar Upadhyay, VJ Sidharth, Juhi Parmar, Mahek Chahel, Sky aka Akashdeep Saigal, we asked stars to pick their winners. Read on…
Take your pick
Karan Kundra I don’t follow the show much but at this point of time I feel Sky should win as he is the craziest and the wackiest person I have ever seen in the house.
Rupali Ganguly Among all the five contestants, I think Juhi Parmar should win considering her popularity and she has been playing a fabulous game in the house.
Sara Khan I want Amar Upadhay to win this season of Bigg Boss because he is a good friend and I know him very well. I am constantly hoping he wins.
Aamir Ali I want Mahek to win because she has been consistent. There are no airs about her and she isn’t a show-off. She is what she is. She may have made mistakes but we all do and learn from them. I like real people and I find her very real.
Shweta Salve Everybody has been saying that Juhi will win because she has been inside the house from
the beginning. If you look at the history, people who have been inside since the first day have won. But I personally want Sid to win. I like him because he isn’t fake.
Rakhi Sawant I personally want Mahek to win. She needs money. Well, everybody in the house needs it. But she deserves an offer. If she doesn’t win, I don’t care about who among the other four wins it. She’s my
favourite.

The year ahead
If your birthday is January 7...
April and May bring news that lifts your spirits but might cause envy in your peers and competitors. Try not to smirk too much, even if you secretly feel that you’re in the best of positions. Humility gets you farther. Follow your goals with determination, however odd they seem to others. With the help of the stars, you will eventually prove you were right. Those with an ascendant in Taurus will refuse the help offered by an antagonist as they’ll pick up a negative vibe. You must view your setbacks of 2011 as a valuable lesson learned. If you think more creatively, you can draw up new plans that will work out better for you once you get another chance. Appliances remain high on the list of repair and can include plumbing, electric, furnace and windows etc. There are bright chances for additional finance. You may get chances to earn profits in investments. However you are advised not to jump to conclusions and examine all aspects critically before you take any decision. You may be inclined to experiment or launch a new initiative. Those suffering from some ailment or the other can hope for a swift recovery. You can look for an improvement in mental and physical health on the whole. It’s not always wise to put your desires in second place, but that can be the best way to earn the love and attention you want. Learning how to enjoy on your own could become a healthy habit. Relationships can be confusing and sometimes it’s hard to decide your next move. Should you stay or should you go? Don’t think about it too hard. Think twice before getting involved in a tempestuous love affair in March. Although you’re attracted to a passionate lover, you aren’t the type who enjoys constant emotional upheavals. Hold out for someone who wants to make life easier for you, rather than defy you at every turn. If you’re already in a relationship, you will find your partner extremely disagreeable. Mood: Willing to ‘invest’ and a bit pushy to do so. Compatible signs: Aries, Leo. Lucky colours: Dark Blue, Burly Wood. Lucky days: Wednesday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 7, 11, 14, 24, 50. Lucky gem: Turquoise. Lucky flower: Evening Primrose
Bipasha Basu (January 7, 1979, New Delhi) had a successful modelling career at age of 17. She made her first debut film Ajnabee, which gave her the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. In 2006, she performed an item number Beedi in the film Omkara. Then in the year 2008 she starred in the film Race which was a success at box office. She was then seen in film Bachna Ae Haseeno. As per her stars, marriage is delayed but the number 7 repeats twice making her a very successful heroine
