Paying scant regard to the model code of conduct and Article 144 of the CrPC, many city residents hit the road to celebrate New Year. Thousands of youngsters from the city and nearby towns converged on the Sarabha Nagar market for the New Year celebrations.

I-T Department strict, people feel the heat

The Income Tax (I-T) Department has taken a serious note of the unaccounted money being seized during the implementation of the code of conduct for the state Assembly elections.

5 held with weapons, one flees

The police claimed to have nabbed five persons from different parts of the city and seized three country-made pistols, two unlicenced pistols and a huge quantity of sharp-edged weapons from them late last night.

Minimum temperature rises; cold wave persists
Ludhiana, January 1
Though the minimum temperature has witnessed an increase in the past 24 hours, the cold wave persists in the region. The maximum temperature has dropped by about 2 degrees Celsius and the weatherman has predicted similar weather conditions in the next 48 hours.

New police chief takes charge

With the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) choosing Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura as its new candidate from the Ludhiana South constituency, the constituency is all set to witness a tough fight, as he would be contesting against his arch-rival Balwinder Singh Bains. Both leaders have always opposed each other on different platforms.

Now it would be the Bains brothers versus their main two political opponents in Atam Nagar as well as Ludhiana (South) constituencies of the city. Tug-of-war for land worth crores in old city area

A urinal located in the old city has become a tug-of-war, as three persons are staking claim on the land said to be worth crores of rupees. The matter came to light when some unidentified persons constructed a wall near the block education office located at the old city area.

Indeed it was a special day for Puneet Vashisht and his wife Seema, who have been blessed with a son after a span of 10 years of their marriage. Seema delivered the baby boy at midnight at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.

South Korean artistes enthral audience

Residents irked over traffic jams

Residents and commuters have been facing a tough time due to the frequent traffic jams on various roads of the town. The frequent traffic jams have irked the residents. There seems to be no relief to the residents from the traffic jams.

‘Contribute towards administrative services’

Showing concern over the poor contribution of the border state towards the central pool of administrative and allied services, the IAS and Allied Services Training Centre at Punjabi University, Patiala, has launched a movement to sensitise students and teachers of educational institutes about the need for developing communication skills and improving general knowledge among passing-out students.

Unkept promises annoy teacher unions
Ludhiana, January 1
Despite the government putting in efforts to pacify teacher unions by accepting most of their demand just before the Assembly elections, it seems the imposition of code of conduct has spoilt the plans of SAD-BJP coalition to strengthen its vote bank as a majority of teachers are still unsatisfied.

Promotion letters still awaited
Ludhiana, January 1
Five days before the implementation of the code of conduct, Punjab education minister Seva Singh Sekhwan announced the promotions of 4,342 teachers in the state. But even after 10 days, teachers did not receive promotion letters. Now these teachers (master cadre, lecturers and headmasters) are feeling disappointed.

Traffic violations by cops a norm in city
Much has been said and written about the men in uniform showing scant regard to traffic rules. Instances of jumping the traffic lights, not wearing the helmet while driving two-wheelers, disregarding the seat belts while driving four-wheelers and blaring hooters on police vehicles when not required by the police personnel are a common scene on the city roads.

Saraswati Model Senior Secondary School, Partap Singh Wala on the Hambran road, defeated SDP Cricket Academy by 49 runs to run home as champions in the Fifth Sanjiv Kaushik Memorial Cricket Tournament (boys-14) played at Don Bosco High School Ground, Jhande village, on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur road here.
