Immigration firm told to pay relief
Chandigarh, January 1 The forum comprising president Lakhsman Sharma and members Madhu Mutneja and Jaswinder Singh Sidhu directed the respondents to pay Rs 7,000 a litigation costs to the complainant. The complainant, Onkar
Verma, a resident of Samrala, submitted that lured by the opposite party’s advertisement about its specialisation in providing consultation for immigration to various countries, the complainant had approached it with a desire for immigration to Australia on a student visa. He said he was a graduate from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and had also passed the IELTS on July 25, 2007, and fulfilled the requisite eligibility conditions for immigration to Australia. He also submitted a demand draft for Rs 16,100 in the name of Australian High Commission towards the initial assessment fee to the opposite party. Another demand draft dated August 20, 2007, for 1,500 Australian Dollars in the name of Holmesglen Institute of Tafe was also handed over to the opposite party for submission to the Australian High Commission. He also paid an amount of Rs 1,08,000 in cash to the opposite party on July 22, 2008, on account of processing charges. However, he was shocked to receive a letter from the Australian government on July 25, 2009, that his application had been rejected as he did not satisfy the relevant criteria for grant of student visa. The counsel for the opposite party averred that the complainant had no locus-standi to file the present complaint, as his complaint was false and frivolous with an intention to extract money from the opposite party. |

A 24-year-old youth from Yamuna Nagar was found dead in a hotel under mysterious circumstances this morning. The deceased was staying at a hotel in Kalka, with three of his friends, after celebrating New Year Eve in Shimla. The district police said the deceased, Puneet alias, Luchy, along with his friends Mohit, Paras and Anuj had left home last morning to celebrate New Year Eve in Shimla. Today around 2.25 am, they checked in at a local hotel. While Puneet decided to sleep in the hotel, the others left the hotel for having a grub. When the two returned around 5.30 am, they found Puneet unconscious and took him to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Mohali: A major tragedy averted when a speeding car near the Fortis Hospital traffic junction here hit a mini bus carrying 20 passengers this morning. In order to avoid the collision, the driver of the mini bus hit a police post before coming to a halt. Bus driver Harbax Singh said it was about 8 in the morning when the bus was hit by a rashly driven Swift car at the light point. “We were coming from Phase XI side and Swift car, which was being driven rashly, also jumped the red light. I tried to avoid the collision but could not.” HC Gurmeet Singh said as per eyewitnesses, the car was being rashly driven and jumped the red light. An aged man sitting next to the driver sustained injuries and was rushed to the GMCH-32 where doctors confirmed fracture in the collarbone. Chandigarh, January 1 While Vipul lost his life, other five sustained minor injuries when the car they were travelling in went out of control and hit the divider, following which the vehicle
overturned. Vipul, hailing from Delhi, did BTech from Alwar and was taking coaching for ILETS here. The police stated that the accident took place at around 9 pm. Vipul was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. |

The police on Sunday arrested two youths with 40 grams of ‘charas’ from Sector 15. They have been identified as Deepak, son of a retired Army officer hailing from Zirakpur, while Rohan hails from Kurukshetra and is presently residing in Panchkula. It said after receiving a tip-off, a cop posing as a customer, approached the two and asked them to come to Sector 15 for the delivery

Six booked for forgery
Zirakpur, January 1 In a similar case, the Zirakpur police had booked two persons of a Mohali-based event management company yesterday on the complaint of Tarun Mahajan, a resident of Chandigarh, who had taken Chimney Heights Resort on lease. The accused, who had booked the resort to organise New Year party, have been identified as Gurbax Singh and Saurabh Chopra, caretakers of an event management company of Mohali. Sources revealed that more than 50 persons turned up for the party
but got disappointed reaching there. The investigating official stated that as per the complaint of Pankaj, the accused had given advertisement in the newspaper about the party. He spent huge amount to buy passes. He alleged that the manager was also involved in the fraud. SHO Zirakpur Yogi Raj confirmed that a case has been registered and hunt is on to nab the accused. |

Zirakpur, January 1 In her complaint to the police, she alleged that the accused, Balbir Singh, had brought her from Hisar in 2008 on the pretext of providing her a job. The complainant claimed that after passing the physical test, the accused had asked her for Rs 5 lakh, but her father had given him only Rs 3 lakh. She alleged that last night Balbir Singh had tried to rape her when she resisted, Balbir threatened to kill her. Zirakpur SHO stated that a case was registered against Balbir Singh. |

Param, Paramveer, Rohit win top honours
Chandigarh, January 1 All the players of DAV Model School, Sector 15, defeated the Delhi team to bag the gold medals during the tournament, held at Indo Public School, at Amravati in Maharashtra, last month. Earlier, the local team finished as runners-up after facing defeat by the Delhi team in the North Zone Tournament of the competition, held in Chandigarh Club, here. “I am very happy that we defeated the Delhi team. It is like a sweet revenge after they defeated us in our own city. The gold medal in the All-India Tourney will surely boost us for the upcoming tournaments,” said Param Veer Bajwa. The team bagged the medal in the boys’ (U-14) category. Around 34 teams participated in the tourney from all over India and from schools of gulf countries. “It feels good to win the tournament at the national level and also such kind of tournaments help Paamveer and me to tune-well and perform better in the upcoming tournaments,” said Param Pun. On other hand, the school authorities also wished all the players for the best in future. “Many a times, both Paramveer Singh Bajwa and Param Pun while representing the city in doubles’ category have brought laurels to the school and I hope that they will keep their winning streak,” said Rakesh Bedi, principal of DAV School, Sector 15. |

Chandigarh, January 1 Batting first, St Soldier School scored a total of 97 runs before getting bundled out. For bowling side, off spinner Aditya Pratap Duggal took a five wicket haul. For St Soldier team Ratan Chand and Lakhwinder were the highest scorers for their contribution of 19 and 16 runs, respectively. In reply, St John’s School achieved the target in 13.3 overs. Tejash Kang (31) was the highest scorer for the team. For the bowling side, Arman grabbed two wickets. In the second match, Millenium School drubbed Doon School by 21 runs. Batting first, the winning side scored a total of 131 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs. Abhishek guided the team to achieve the total after scoring and unbeaten 68 runs while Abhinav added 20 runs in team’s total. For bowling side, Ankit claimed three wickets. Chandigarh, January 1 Aryan Pal Singh of St Xavier’s School, Panchkula, won a gold medal in rink race 2 (1000 mt) and one bronze medal in boys’ (U-11) road race quads category. Second skater, Adhiraj Kundlas, of the same school bagged a silver medal in road race. For their performance in the competition, both the players booked their berth in the Open National Games. “Aryan Pal Singh will be awarded Rs 20,000 and Adhiraj Kundlas with Rs 11,000 for brining laurels. Their hard work paid and they should continue to work hard” said Chander Singhal, coach. A total of 650 skaters had participated in the tourney whereas around 60 skaters were from Tricity (Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali). |
