On the Hit-list
The year 2011 had a lot to offer in terms of songs with great tunes, entertaining lyrics and rhythmic beats. And that's what is exactly needed to please the ear and take to the dance floor.
The song that tops the hit list is undoubtedly Kolaveri Di from the Tamil movie 3, which was officially released on November 16. The song instantly became a rage on social networking sites for its quirky Tanglish lyrics. It also became the most searched YouTube video in India and that too within days. YouTube also bestowed the Recently Most Popular Gold Medal Award to the video. The song with nonsensical lyrics was literally enjoyed by everyone! Love can never fade out, especially from the Bollywood songs, because every movie has a love angle, even if it is not needed! So songs like Teri Meri Prem Kahani from Bodyguard, in the magical voices of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal, was admired by everybody in love. This song is a copy of a traditional Romanian Christmas carol La Viflaim colo-n jos (down in Bethlehem), which has been a part of Romanian culture for hundreds
of years. The song Ishq Risk from the movie Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, again sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, was again a huge hit. With movies liberally getting a green signal from the censor board, even songs like DK Bose from the controversial movie Delhi Belly was a craze. The Central Board of Film Certification got into trouble after approving the song, even though a section of people was angry at the obscene lyrics. However, the song was a massive hit, especially with the younger generation. Vidya Balan’s bold portrayal of the south siren Silk Smitha in the movie The Dirty Picture definitely scored a point. Her latkas and jhatkas among lemons in the song Ooh La La made everybody celebrate Bappi Lahri’s comeback. The much-hyped superhero movie Ra.One, which failed to impress the audience, managed to grab some limelight because of the song Chammak Challo. The song was composed by musical director duo Vishal-Shekhar and officially released on September 12. However, the song became controversial after a rough version was leaked on the Internet on May 31. This version was sung by international pop singer Akon along with Hamsika Iyer. Chammak Challo is also noted for being the first musical collaboration of Akon with Indian artistes. Then there were party songs like Saadi Gali from Tanu Weds Manu, which was Lehmber Hussainpuri’s single and topped the Bollywood charts for many weeks. The single was initially released on RDB’s (Rhythm Dhol Bass) album Three in 2005, but then due to its huge success in the Bhangra scene it was re-released on the soundtrack of the movie Tanu Weds Manu in 2011. Among other hits were Chaar Baj Gaye from the movie F.A.L.T.U, Subah Hone Na De from Desi Boyz, Aadat Se Majboor from Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl and Senorita from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. After Munni and Sheila, there came along Jalebi Bai from the movie Double Dhamaal, which was a hit item number. To wrap it up — who can forget Sadda Haq from Rockstar? The number became the youth anthem with its powerful lyrics and rebellious tone. Looking forward to a rocking 2012 as well! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

The fashion street…
However clichéd it may sound, but it’s the final countdown and no one can deny that 2011 was a good year for fashion. We had a fair share of over-exposed prints (lace), dresses, swirling maxi dresses, wide leg pants, classic halter tops, knee length as well as long skirts that were in vogue. And if you track fashion trends of 2011, you’ll be glad that there were plenty to get excited about! And it’s time to speed up as you need to prepare your closet for the next year!
There is no doubt that 2011 was the 70’s show for we had wide-leg trouser to sexy classic halter to lace, crochet, asymmetrical lines and bold colours in fashion. Talking about the 70s fashion trends, there were the ‘70s Bohemian and 70s sophisticated glamour’. When it comes to the latter, think of the dresses that fell like shimmering water in the evening and high-waist pants with elegant blouses for the day. Punk too carried on from 2010 to 2011, but it was less of a full-blown trend where we had the ‘biker look’ in the lead. Overall, it was a subtle interpretation of the imagined retro and a punk look with a slight feminine appeal to it. Spring 2011 introduced fresh colours, prints and light summery fabrics. Though every season trends emerge and evolve, spring brought the maxi dress to fore. This was a trend that rode high on almost all minds — girls to ladies to mommies and their little daughters! Lace was also one of the trends that spring bestowed upon us. Though it was not new, like all trends this evolved to the classic side with quality antique-style fabrics remaining the key to the trend. And we must not forget that Kate Middleton’s wedding dress only accentuated the trend of lace; we saw lace everywhere from tops to shirts to skirts and even in kurtis as well as suits. The ultimate balance of lace lied in being romantic but not over-girly; sensual but not over-suggestive. Crochet was also seen in 2011, but the love for lace was more pronounced. Fuller, longer, smarter looking skirts, dresses and their maxi siblings gave minis a major run for their money. Ballet skirts inspired by Natalie Portman’s Black Swan attire also created a good market and we saw girls wearing it in our city too. Talking prints, the spring/summer basically turned up the volume with louder and playful floral, expressive, fruit and bold animal prints. And the colours too went flowery with neutral as well as bold hues riding high. With the skinny pants and jeans having become so common, it was obvious that some new trend would emerge. With the comeback of all things 1970s, it was inevitable that fashion-forward people turned to wide leg pants, plazzos and flared pants. For the fall/winter, high-waist pants with elegant blouses was a trend to be cashed upon; 70’s denim too was a trend to look out for. Jaggards made a comeback, so did kaftans and kimonos. Pleats, chunky knits and light-weight sweaters were seen at the beginning of the Fall, but what fashionistas witnessed during the season was the use of brighter hues like crimson, neon orange, purple, sky blue and others. For winter, which is still making its mark, fur is the most pronounced fashion statement for women. For men, the year was interesting as well as bold in terms of colours and textures. Loose-tailored clothes were a big trend for the spring/summer and colours were far more vibrant. We even saw floral prints for men, including the evergreen stripes, geometrical, digital prints and plain bold hues. From loose-fitting overalls and trousers to smart shirts, men were looking cool in their spring/summer attire. For the Fall, we had oversized loose coats and jackets where men could enjoy some freedom of motion alongside some form-fitting suits. The season also saw rich colours, styles, textures, and fabrics for men. Trends like military fashion style coats and jackets as well as accessories have been all over the runway and the trend is continuing since the last year. Fabric is where designers played with men apparels this year. Velvet has been quite a trendsetter and is continuing alongside with luxurious fabrics as cashmere, fur, leather, and calfskin. The year 2011 rocked and we hope the good times keep rolling in 2012!

Celeb Point Divya Dutta I will be in Chandigarh when you read this. Every year we say, “Ye saal kahan gaya pata hi nahin chala!” This time more so, at least for me! Three days to go and we will usher the New Year. Lots have done this year, and lots happened—good and bad. But life finds it balance, only we take time to adjust to it. On the personal front, kuch rishte bane, kuch gayab hue, some new friends became an integral part and some who were to be an integral part, parted ways. But when did life stop? Work wise I am the queen of underdogs. No sugar daddies to drop my name and push it for a role. And trust me, it’s a must even for the biggest and the most talented, I mean to be recommended. Never got myself to do that. I’m proud of it but it’s a tough journey. But then again, life balances it all. Someone up there gave me a place and respect in the industry which is just mine, udhaar ki nahi. The year 2011 has given me films with the best filmmakers. Amole Gupte, Sanjay Bhansali, Rakesh Mehra, Madhur Bhandarkar, Vikram Bhatt and many more! Who would want sugar daddies when someone up there is looking after me beautifully? God has given me better things. I am amazed by His plans— fourteen years and I have now begun my career in the best possible way. Looking my best, doing my best. As the Gita says, ‘Give it your best, baaki us par cchor do...’ This year will be special I know...resolutions saying accept and embrace life! And never cease dreaming. Because dreams do come true. Mine did! Qatra qatra milti hai, qatra qatra jeene do, zindagi hai behne do...lovely lines! So, smile laugh! Be proud of what yours, even your weaknesses because that make you special! A very happy new year to you all! Don’t have to say it as you know! But I love you all! Thanks for all the love you give me. (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

Life after 50
Women feel most comfortable, happy and content with their bodies when they have reached 52, a study has found. The study, conducted by Kellogg's slimming and lifestyle website Myspecialk.co.uk, found that two-thirds of the women studied feel at their most confident by the time they reach the age of 52.
Half of the 3,000 women questioned said the reason for the peak in self-esteem was the feeling that key goals, such as weight loss, had been achieved by this age.

“It’s a great time to start thinking about those resolutions. But instead of just sticking to the usual goals of dropping a few pounds or hitting the gym, why not take one simple step that will help the environment, the health of your family and your pocketbook all at once? “I recently made the commitment to get rid of bottled water in my home for all of those reasons,” Richards said.

A new chapter
Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock was so devastated by her cheating husband and the subsequent
marriage breakdown that she thought she would never be able to face the camera again.
The 47-year-old actress, who maintained a dignified silence over the whole scandal surrounding her ex-husband Jesse James last year, says she thought she was “permanently broken” after discovering James had been cheating on her, a publication reported. “I was perfectly content to be permanently broken. I honestly didn’t think I was in a place where I wanted to work or wanted to step out of where I was. I wasn’t prepared,” Bullock said about her marriage collapse. The actress found out about James affair with tattoo model Michelle McGee just days after she picked up the Best
Actress Oscar in 2010 for The Blind Side where she paid a glowing tribute to her husband. She was unaware all this while
that he had been cheating on her with McGee while she was away shooting the film. Bullock said she was persuaded to return to acting by director Stephen Daldry who wanted her to appear opposite Tom Hanks in the 9/11 drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. Hanks plays a victim of the September 11th terror attack on the Twin Towers in New York with Bullock his grief stricken wife. “So we had a great time. It’s no longer “selfish actress” in the moment. I wanted to have an amazing time with him and, fortunately, Daldry presented it. In every possible way, it was the best!”
