Sanitation workers not paid salary, protest
Ambala, December 20 Manoj Kumar, president of the Safai Karamchari Union, today said they had not been paid salaries for one month. General secretary of the union Sewa Ram said “A majority of us are finding it difficult to run households,” he alleged. The employees raised slogans and demanded immediate disbursement of their salaries as it would adversely affect the livelihood of persons engaged in the cleanliness work of the town. The contractual system had only led to the exploitation of employees and should be discouraged, Manoj added. |

Industrialist escapes attack
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 20 Gopal Singhi, director, MR Alloys, Mandi Gobindgarh, said his brother Vipin Singhi was on his way home when four persons aged between 20 and 25 overtook his vehicle. He stopped the car and the youths asked him to come down, which he did not do. The youths then broke the windowpanes of his car and tried to snatch the keys of the vehicle from him. Vipin, however, managed to escape. The youths gave him a chase, but later they gave up. He lodged a complaint with the Gobindgarh police. —

Accused’s driver held
Chandigarh: The police today arrested the driver of the accused’s vehicle, Manpreet Singh, in a case of causing death due to negligence. He had fled the spot after crushing a motorcyclist on December 17.
Nineteen-year-old Charanjit Singh had died in the accident while he was riding the bike and was hit by the Scorpio car. The police arrested Manpreet, a resident of Amritsar, from Sector 47. —

Accused to undergo lie detector test
Ambala, December 20 Mannat was kidnapped, killed and thrown in a drain near a residential colony on November 20 and the body was recovered after 12 days. On the complaint of a railway employee, Nitin, father of the child registered a case at the Parao police station against five persons of the family, including the complainant’s mother (child’s grandmother) Saroj Bala, two brothers Sachin and Sanjay, brother-in-law and his wife. The postmortem report indicated that the child was murdered, sources said.

Rally against drug addiction
Derabassi, December 20 Following this lecture session was also organised on the drug menace in society. After the refreshment the different groups of the students visited the village and interacted about drug abuse with villagers. They also invited village residents to listen the lecture on Drug abuse by Gaurav Gaur, Asst.Prof. Center for social services, P.U,Chd. Mrs. Satinder Dhillon, Principal of the college welcomed the guest and said that drug abuse is the most truculent evil in Punjab. Prof Gaurv Gaur said “No doubt it is difficult to get rid off with the habit of drugs, but it is possible. The things required for this purpose are good qualified doctors, psychiatrists and most importantly the love and support of the family members”. Mrs.Monika Arora, the NSS incharge thanked the guest and requested everyone present to contribute their services in making the society, a better place to live in. After the lecture, a folk song competition for the ladies of the village was organized which filled the environment with colours. The best singers were awarded with prizes of honour. |

National Voters’ Day on January 25
Ambala, December 20 Vidyarthi said various election awareness programmes would be organised throughout the state. Public functions would be held at polling stations to felicitate newly registered voters where electoral photo identity cards would be distributed among them, Vidyarthi added. He said booth-level officers in each polling station area would felicitate newly registered voters. A badge, prescribed by the Election Commission of India with a slogan “Proud to be voter-ready to vote” would also be provided to voters. Election Registration Officers and Assistant Election Registration Officers of the constituencies will grace the occasion. He said a district electoral officer would organise appropriate events at the district headquarters in association with panchayat organisations, academic institutions, civil society groups, organisation of youth volunteers like NSS, NCC, scouts and guides to popularise electoral participation and advance voter education. He said various competitions would be held in higher secondary schools and higher education institutions. |

Hearing deferred to January 27
Chandigarh, December 20 In the PIL, advocate Pankaj Chandgothia and his wife Sangeeta demanded that a special cell be created with representatives from all departments concerned, including the administration, the MC and the police, to look into the problem of cattle menace. They also demanded that a compensation policy should be formulated wherein the administration should be liable to compensate any person who suffers on account of the stray cattle menace. The police should register an FIR in every such case. |

World XI rout India XI in exhibition match
Chandigarh, December 20 From the very first minute, World XI comprising of Australian, Dutch, Canadian and English players, started dominating the match and proved their iron. However, from India XI side, ace player Dhanraj Pillay displayed a great skill along with Deepak Thakur to reduce the margin. It all started in the 9th minute after Australian half-back Joseph Reardon gave away the lead to the team with scoping the ball into goal. On other hand, local lad, Deepak Thakur, displayed his stick work and deflected the ball into opponent’s goal in the 16th minute to level the score. After ten minutes, Roderik Huber penetrated the India XI defence and scored the second goal in the 27th minute.
But Dhanraj Pillay took the team to 2-1, as the player shifted to centre half-back and from the right half back he got a pass from Bikas Toppo which he ended up in a fine finishing touchin the 27th minute. Before the second half hooter, the World XI team had scored the leveller through Connon Grimes in the 38th minute of the game. Just after the breather of the second half, the players of visiting side showed their strength and scored four goals in next two half to ensure team’s win.
As the third half started, the India XI defence failed to hold catch of Irrish forward Pheiie Maguire. Pheiie made his presence felt after striking in the 40th minute while Peter Kally scored another goal in the 55th minute of the third half. However, Peter struck again in the fourth half during the 59th minute after defeating Harpal Singh and dodging goalkeeper Adrian D’Suouza. English player David Seddon completed the team’s tally after hitting the wooden plank in the dying 58th minutes of the game through the awarded penalty corner. “There was lack of communication and we missed many chances of scoring the lead. I hope in coming time, we will work hard and try to makeover our mistakes. The presence of senior players does boost energy but all we need is to practice harder. The team will surely make a comeback,” said Prabhjot Singh, captain of India XI. |
